RESUMO

The prognosis of patients with BRCA1-related breast carcinomas is inferior to the patients without BRCA1 mutation, but most of these tumors have a so-called triple negative phenotype characterized by increased chemosensitivity. Information regarding the chemosensitivity of BRCA1-related breast carcinomas is limited. We present a case of a mother and daughter with hereditary breast carcinoma treated with primary chemotherapy using the dose-dense combination of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide and sequential weekly paclitaxel administration. Pathological complete response was observed in both patients. Subsequent genetic analysis revealed the same BRCA1 mutation with exon 5-14 deletion in both women. The present experience as well as other reports indicate increased sensitivity of BRCA1-related breast carcinoma to primary chemotherapy.

RESUMO

Abdominal liposarcoma is a rare tumor of uncertain prognosis. Radical surgery is possible in about two-thirds of the patients, and the prognosis of patients with inoperable tumors is dismal. Only a few cases of liposarcoma complicating pregnancy have been documented. We report a case of a patient who was diagnosed with metastatic abdominal liposarcoma during the third trimester of the pregnancy. After induced vaginal delivery, palliative surgery was performed and one cycle of systemic combination chemotherapy was administered. Despite the multimodality treatment the patient died of progressive disease within one month after diagnosis. Autopsy revealed high-grade pleomorphic liposarcoma arising from the retroperitoneum with liver and lung metastases.

RESUMO

The authors present three case-reviews of rare metastatic affections of the female mammary gland by the following disorders--a malignant lymphoma, a Grawitz carcinoma of the kidney and by a malignant melanoma. Histological examinations of the tumors and restrospective examinations of the respective patients anamneses resulted in the primary focus determination in two cases.

RESUMO

Radiograms of nonpalpable breast lesions containing calcifications represent one of the most important fields of using x-ray in breast pathology. An analysis of a group of 52 nonpalpable lesions of breast with calcifications revealed a discrepancy between the presence of calcifications in radiograms and in histological sections. An absence of calcifications was observed in 47 of 301 (15.7%) paraffin blocks. Calcifications were lost by cutting them off from the blocks, by leaving them deeper in blocks so that they were absent in sections, or by losing them by various other ways during processing of the blocks. An algorithm for examination of nonpalpable calcified lesions of breast has been developed. During the procedure, tissue slices and paraffin block were x-rayed, thus increasing the detection of calcifications in blocks from 76% to 84.3%.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Incorporation of doxorubicin hydrochloride into pegylated liposomes (PLD) may decrease chemotherapy side effects and increase the activity. Hyperthermia could further potentiate its effectiveness. CASE REPORT: A patient with skin metastases of breast carcinoma was treated with intravenous infusion of PLD (Caelyx) in combination with ultrasound hyperthermia. Each cycle consisted of infusion of 40 mg PLD absolute dose, followed by 2 fractions of hyperthermia 41-43 degrees C for 45 min 1 and 48 h after infusion. A complete remission was observed after the combination treatment with no significant toxicity. CONCLUSION: Present observations suggest that the combination of PLD with hyperthermia of skin metastases of breast carcinoma may be an active and well tolerated treatment.
