BACKGROUND: Mind-body therapies (MBTs) have gained popularity among patients with cancer as a supportive therapy. To date, no systematic reviews have assessed the effect of MBTs on the health outcomes in women with gynecological cancer. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the effectiveness of MBTs on quality of life, anxiety, depression, cancer-related pain, and fatigue among women with gynecological cancer. METHODS: We searched and screened randomized controlled trials in 7 databases, trial registries, and gray literature from the databases' inception to December 2021. Data were extracted from eligible studies, with each study's quality assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. Meta-analyses were conducted using RevMan 5.4. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were performed. The quality of evidence across the studies was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. RESULTS: Nine trials were included. Statistically significant effects of MBTs on depression (standardized mean difference, -0.56; 95% confidence interval, -1.01 to -0.11; P = .01), pain (standardized mean difference, -1.60; 95% confidence interval, -3.14 to -0.07; P = .04), and fatigue (standardized mean difference, -1.17; 95% confidence interval, -2.16 to -0.18; P = .02) were observed, but not on quality of life and anxiety. The quality of evidence was low due to the high risks of bias and high heterogeneity among the studies. CONCLUSIONS: Mind-body therapies were effective in reducing depression, pain, and fatigue of women with gynecological cancer. However, the low quality of the evidence implies the need for more future studies with better methodologies. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Mind-body therapies may be used as an additional strategy to help manage depressive mood, pain, and fatigue among women with gynecological cancer.

OBJECTIVES: This review and meta-analysis aims to reveal how pain education interventions affect registered nurses' pain management. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL (EBSCOhost), and ERIC REVIEW METHODS: A systematic search of four electronic databases was conducted to identify relevant peer-reviewed English or Finnish-language articles published between 2008 and 2021. The review included a quality appraisal and a meta-analysis of articles providing group-level data before and after the intervention (n = 12). The methods followed the PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS: Overall, 23 articles met the inclusion criteria for the review, of which 15 were evaluated as good quality. Based on the articles on document audits (n = 10), pain education interventions reduced the risk of not receiving the best pain management by 40%, whereas based on the articles on patients' experiences (n = 4), they reduced the risk by 25%. The study quality and design of these articles were considerably heterogenous. CONCLUSIONS: Pain education study strategies varied widely among the included articles. These articles used multivariate interventions without systematization or sufficient opportunity to transfer the study protocols. It can be concluded that versatile pain nursing education interventions, as well as auditing of pain nursing and its documentation combined with feedback, can be effective to nurses in adapting pain management and assessment practices and increasing patient satisfaction. However, further research is required in this regard. In addition, well-designed, implemented, and reproducible evidence-based pain education intervention is required in the future.

AIM: This study aimed to describe family caregivers of older people's experiences of participatory art interventions, including music, dance and visual arts. DESIGN: A descriptive qualitative study. METHODS: Thematic interviews were conducted with 12 family caregivers. Qualitative data were analysed with thematic analysis. RESULTS: The results illustrated the meaning of art groups, which included a shared feeling of togetherness, empowering and activating peer support and a sense of communality. Art groups also represented a hobby, enhancing caregivers' social and mental well-being. The art groups could be described as an art-driven, participatory shared experience. Participatory arts are noteworthy contributors to the well-being of family caregivers and care recipients, especially from peer support and communality. Further research is needed to find out about participants' preferred art-based activities and their impact on their well-being. No patient or public contribution because of inflexibility in the timing of engagement.

AIMS: To evaluate how an education program on evidence-based practice (EBP) affected nurses´ knowledge, practices, and attitudes related to EBPs in patient care. METHODS: Nurses of one Finnish university hospital participated in two separate EBP education programs in 2016-2017 and 2018-2019. Data was collected by a questionnaire given before and after each program. Reliable instruments for measuring EBP were used: The Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (24 items) and the Attitudes to Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (17 items). Means and frequencies were evaluated with the Mann-Whitney U test and linear regression. RESULTS: Nurses reported that their EBP practice, skills and the Work based on EBPs improved substantially after the education program. We found that scores on the Work based on EBPs and the attitudes towards EBP could predict the nurses' overall self-evaluations of practices, attitudes, and skills. DISCUSSION: EBP education affects positively on implementation of nurses' practices and skills. There is still a need to change attitudes towards evidence based practice. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE, RESEARCH, POLICY, MANAGEMENT, AND EDUCATION: Organizations need to maintain and develop efficient, attractive EBP educational programs to promote lifelong learning. CONCLUSIONS: When designing EBP educational content, it is crucial to teach participants to develop evidence-based methods and consider how to implement them in practice.

The benefits of art therapies on older people's health have been well documented. However, studies into the perspectives of pedagogues on conducting arts interventions are scarce and no empirical evidence of the views of professional pedagogues views have been published to date. In this study, seven professional art pedagogues were interviewed using a thematic interview approach focusing on the pedagogues' experiences of conducting arts interventions with a family caregiver and care recipient dyads. The interviews were analysed inductively using thematic content analysis. According to the analysis, three intersecting themes were found that both steered the pedagogical process and emerged from the process: holistic pedagogy, professional development and witnessing. The themes revealed a further understanding of approaches to the interviewees' teaching and the value of participatory community arts in practice. The pedagogues' experiences encourage art pedagogy to be acknowledged in a wider context within communities and healthcare environments. Further studies on interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with art pedagogues and healthcare professionals are encouraged.

BACKGROUND: This article describes the experiences of master students of nursing science in learning interpersonal communication competence through the simulation method. The exercises reflected challenging interactive situations in the field of health care. Few studies have been published on using the simulation method in the communication education of teachers, managers, and experts in this field. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to produce information which can be utilised in developing the simulation method to promote the interpersonal communication competence of master-level students of health sciences. DESIGN: This study used the qualitative, descriptive research method. SETTINGS: At the Department of Nursing Science, the University of Eastern Finland, students major in nursing science specialise in nursing leadership and management, preventive nursing science, or nurse teacher education. PARTICIPANTS: Students from all three specialties taking the Challenging Situations in Speech Communication course participated (n=47). METHODS: Essays on meaningful learning experiences collected using the critical incident technique, underwent content analysis. RESULTS: Planning of teaching, carrying out different stages of the simulation exercise, participant roles, and students' personal factors were central to learning interpersonal communication competence. CONCLUSION: Simulation is a valuable method in developing the interpersonal communication competence of students of health sciences at the masters' level. The methods used in the simulation teaching of emergency care are not necessarily applicable as such to communication education. The role of teacher is essential to supervising students' learning in simulation exercises. In the future, it is important to construct questions that help students to reflect specifically on communication.

RESUMO

Evidence-based nursing requires carefully designed interventions. This paper discusses methodological issues and explores practical solutions in the use of music intervention in pain management among adults after major abdominal surgery. There is a need to study nursing interventions that develop and test the effects of interventions to advanced clinical nursing knowledge and practice. There are challenges in carrying out intervention studies in clinical settings because of several interacting components and the length and complexity of the causal chains linking intervention with outcome. Intervention study is time-consuming and requires both researchers and participants' commitment to the study. Interdisciplinary and multiprofessional collaboration is also paramount. In this study, patients were allocated into the music group, in which patients listened to music 30 minutes at a time, or the control group, in which patients did not listen to any music during the same period.

Postoperative pain management is based on the use of analgesics; however, music may alleviate pain either by direct analgesic effects or by relaxing and distracting the mind from pain and unpleasant feelings. Conflicting results have been presented about how listening to music affects analgesic use and length of hospital stay after surgery. We assessed the effect of music listening on analgesic use, length of hospital stay, and adverse effects in adult patients having laparotomy, using a prospective design with two parallel groups. Patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery (n = 168) were assigned to either a music group (n = 83) operated on odd weeks or a control group (n = 85) operated on even weeks. The music group listened to music 7 times for 30 minutes at a time during the first 3 postoperative days. The control group did not listen to the music. The hypotheses that patients in the music group will need less analgesic, have a shorter length of hospital stay, and experience less adverse effects than those in the control group were not supported by the data, although patients recovering from surgery enjoyed listening to music. Music listening may enhance quality of hospital stay and recovery in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery and could be a useful tool to relieve the patient's pain experience.

AIMS: To evaluate the effects of music listening on pain intensity and pain distress on the first and second postoperative days in abdominal surgery patients and the long-term effects of music on the third postoperative day. BACKGROUND: Music has been found to relieve pain intensity in surgery patients. There are only a few studies on music intervention in abdominal surgery. Music intervention studies assessing multidimensional pain such as pain intensity and pain distress are also scarce. DESIGN: Prospective clinical study with two parallel groups. METHODS: Patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery (n = 168) were divided into either a music group (n = 83) or a control group (n = 85). Patients assessed pain intensity and pain distress in bed rest, during deep breathing and in shifting position once in the evening of the operation day and on the first and second postoperative days in the morning, at noon and in the evening. On the third postoperative day, the patients assessed their pain intensity and pain distress only once. RESULTS: In the music group, the patients' pain intensity and pain distress in bed rest, during deep breathing and in shifting position were significantly lower on the second postoperative day compared with control group of patients. On the third postoperative day, when long-term effects of music on pain intensity and pain distress were assessed, there were no significant differences between music and control groups. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that the use of music alleviates pain intensity and pain distress in bed rest, during deep breathing and in shifting position after abdominal surgery on the second postoperative day. Music intervention is safe, inexpensive and easily used to improve the healing environment for abdominal surgery patients. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Music intervention should be offered as an adjunct alternative to pharmacological pain relief after abdominal surgery in nursing practice.

Contradictory results have been presented on how music listening affects patients' blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of music listening on blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate on operation day, and on the first, second, and third postoperative days in abdominal surgery patients. Using a quasi-experimental pretest-post-test design, 168 abdominal surgery patients were assigned every second week to the music group (n=83) or to the control group (n=85) for 25 months. In the music group, the respiratory rate was significantly lower after intervention on both the first and second postoperative days compared with the control group. A significant reduction in systolic blood pressure was demonstrated in the group that received music compared with the control group on both the first and second postoperative days. Evaluation of the long-term effects of music on physiological factors showed that the respiratory rate in the music group was significantly lower compared with the control group. Nurses should offer music listening to surgery patients because of its potential benefit.
