INTRODUCTION: Pelvis fractures are among the most difficult fractures to manage and treat for Orthopedic surgeons. Anatomic reduction is the main goal to reach in the acetabular fractures' treatment. The following study compares clinical outcomes and complications of Ilioinguinal versus modified Stoppa approach in Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) of anterior column acetabulum fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comparative analysis on 90 patients undergoing ORIF on acetabular fracture has been performed. Patients have been divided into two groups. The first group was treated by Ilioinguinal approach (n = 48), the second group by modified Stoppa approach (n = 42). The following parameters have been compareted: quality of fragment reduction; operative time; peri­ and post-operative blood loss; complications; clinical and radiographic outcomes. RESULTS: The modified Stoppa approach has shown a shorter mean operative time (146 min vs 175 min), fewer complications (14/48 vs 6/42), less blood loss both in the perio-operative phase (0.8 Hb pt vs 1.3 Hb pt) than in postoperative one (1.1 Hb pt vs 1.5 Hb pt), a lower rate of nerve, infections and critical complications. On the other hand, the ilioinguinal approach has showed better results in terms of quality of fracture reduction (43/48 patiens with anatomical or near anatomical reduction vs. 37/42). No significant differences concerning vascular lesions, clinical and functional outcomes have been found between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: The modified Stoppa approach results in shorter operative time, less intra-operative blood loss and fewer complications than the ilioinguinal one. Greater anatomic reduction is achieved by Ilioinguinal approach; however, this does not necessarily translate into better clinical and functional outcomes which, overall, are comparable in the two analysed approaches. In conclusion, the modified Stoppa approach is deemed to be a better alternative in treating these fractures.

BACKGROUND: Various conservative treatments and surgical techniques have been reported in the literature as efficient and feasible measures to treat the cubital tunnel syndrome. However, there has been no consensus on the best management of the syndrome, and uniform standardised guidelines have not yet been accepted or introduced. With our study, we present our experience on the clinical efficacies and outcomes of the surgical techniques of neurolysis alone and neurolysis associated with ulnar nerve anterior transposition at the elbow joint in patients with neuropathic symptoms due to cubital tunnel syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 107 patients with cubital tunnel syndrome were retrospectively enrolled, surgically treated and followed up in our study. The cohort was divided into two groups: 41 patients treated only with neurolysis of the ulnar nerve (Group 1), and 66 patients treated with neurolysis and anterior transposition (Group 2). Of the participants, 35 were women and 72 were men. The average age was 54 years. Significant comorbidities were preoperatively diagnosed in 26 patients. Conservative measures had been considered, followed by surgical management if appropriate. A pre-op electromyography was performed for all patients. All surgical procedures were performed by the same surgical team. A post-operative follow-up was carried out, and the findings were recorded. The "McGowan" and "Wilson and Krout" classifications and the DASH score were used. A satisfaction questionnaire was administered to all patients post-operatively at 2 weeks). RESULTS: Ulnar nerve neurolysis and anterior transposition surgery were all successfully performed. Overall complications were post-operative haematoma (8%) and wound problems (5%). In 6% there was recurrence of symptoms. In 11% there was no improvement of symptoms. Pre-op McGowan classifications for groups 1 and 2 were 0% and 0% (grade 0), 21% and 24% (grade 1), 46% and 44% (grade 2), and 33% and 34% (grade 3), respectively. The post-op McGowan classifications were 34% and 37% (grade 0), 39% and 40% (grade 1), 23% and 20% (grade 2), and 4% and 3% (grade 3), respectively. The post-op Wilson and Krout classifications were 45% and 46% (excellent), 26% and 28% (good), 19% and 15% (fair), and 10% and 11% (poor), respectively. The DASH score means for groups 1 and 2 were 14.8 and 15.2, respectively. A negative Froment's sign was present in 73.2% and 71.2%, respectively. In Group 1, the post-op satisfaction questionnaire scores were 0 for one patient, 1 for four patients, 2 for seven patients, 3 for ten patients, 4 for twelve patients and 5 for seven patients. In Group 2, the post-op satisfaction questionnaire scores were 0 for three patients, 1 for nine patients, 2 for twelve patients, 3 for fifteen patients, 4 for eighteen patients and 5 for nine patients. CONCLUSIONS: In our experience, the surgical technique to treat the cubital tunnel syndrome most efficiently and feasibly has not yet been established in terms of indications and outcomes. This is supported by the data present in the international literature. Good and similar results were obtained with neurolysis alone and neurolysis associated with anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve (in line with the international data). In conclusion, more high-quality studies of greater statistical power are needed to provide a consensus on the surgical indications and techniques to treat the cubital tunnel syndrome and to establish internationally standardised guidelines.

PURPOSE: Some authors consider preservation of the subscapularis tendon as one of the most important elements for a successful long-term outcome in patients operated on with open capsulorrhaphy for recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether vertical tenotomy of the subscapularis tendon might affect internal rotation strength recovery in patients operated on with open capsulorrhaphy for recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation. METHODS: Ninety-six patients were retrospectively followed up at a mean of 72.5 months. They underwent clinical evaluation, Rowe and Walch-Duplay scoring scales, the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and dynamometric measurements (side-to-side) of internal and external rotation, forward elevation, and abduction. All patients were athletes: 25% were practising risk-free sports, 44% contact sports, 14.5% sports with cocking of the arm, and 14.5% high-risk sports activities. RESULTS: Five (5.2%) recurrences were registered, and all patients returned to pre-operative sports activity. The Rowe score was 98.12, the Walch-Duplay score 92.25, and the VAS score 0.1. Dynamometric assessment showed no significant differences (side-to-side) in internal rotation (p = 0.34), external rotation (p = 0.9), flexion (p = 0.7), and abduction (p = 0.7). Dominant arms showed better results than non-dominant arms (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Complete tenotomy of the subscapularis tendon does not seem to negatively affect internal rotation strength recovery or external rotation movement in athletes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to correlate the bone block graft position, its dimension, its reabsorption and its integration with clinical outcome in patients operated on for recurrent anterior shoulder instability. METHODS: Twenty-four patients affected by recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation and operated on using the Latarjet procedure were enrolled in this study. At 6 and 24 months, patients were evaluated with the following scales: ROWE, WOSI, Oxford instability score, UCLA, DASH and Constant score. Patients underwent two postoperative CT scans: immediately after surgery (T0) and at 24 months post-op (T1). RESULTS: At 24 months, none of the 24 patients reported further episodes of dislocation. Clinically at the final follow-up, we found excellent results in all the evaluation scales. Mean reduction in bone graft from T0 to T1 was 42% of the overall volume; similarly reduction in the overall surface was 29.3%; decrease in length, width and depth was, respectively, 3.4, 2.2 and 1.0 mm; all these parameters decreased significantly (p < 0.05). No correlations were found between radiological parameters and clinical and functional outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The results confirm that a lack of integration or a significant reabsorption of the graft is present in the Latarjet procedure, but they do not significantly affect the clinical and functional results.

OBJECTIVE: The best treatment for moderately displaced radial head fractures (Mason type II) still remains controversial. In cases of isolated fractures, there is no evidence that a fragment displacement of ≥ 2 mm gives poor results in conservatively treated fractures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 52 patients (31M, 21F) affected by an isolated Mason type II fracture, treated with a long arm cast for two weeks between 2008 and 2013. All patients had practiced sports before being injured. They were all either bicyclists, or baseball, boxers, basketball, rugby, tennis or football players. The mean follow-up was 36 months. Elbow and forearm range of motion were measured. The Mayo Elbow Performance Score, the Broberg and Morrey rating system and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Score (DASH score) were analyzed. Follow-up radiographs were examined for evidence of consolidation, late displacement, early arthritis and non-unions. RESULTS: Flexion was slightly impaired in the injured limb when compared to the uninjured limb (137°± 6° versus 139°±5°) as were extension (-3°±6° versus 1°±4°, p < 0.05), supination (86°±6° versus 88°±3°), pronation (87°±4° versus 88°±6°) and valgus deviation (10°±4° versus 8°±3°, p < 0.05). 40 patients had no elbow complaints; 9 patients experienced occasional pain, 2 a mild instability of the elbow, and 4 a mild loss of grip strength. The DASH score was excellent in 48 patients (92.31%). In only 6 cases (11.53%) degenerative changes were greater in formerly injured elbows than in uninjured elbows. All patients returned to their previous sports activities. CONCLUSIONS: Isolated Mason type II fractures can have a good or excellent mid-term functional outcome even when treated conservatively.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears are closely related with muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration and both affect healing after surgical treatment. The aim of this study was to compare surgical versus conservative management of medium-to-large reparable rotator cuff tears. METHODS: Forty-one patients with clinical and radiological (MRI) diagnosis of medium-to-large rotator cuff tears were retrospectively identified and divided into two groups: Group A, arthroscopic repair; Group B, conservative treatment. At follow-up (T1) all patients underwent a new clinical (VAS, SST, Constant and Relative Constant Scale) and radiological evaluation (MRI). RESULTS: When comparing the two groups at T1 (mean follow-up: Group A, 50 months; Group B, 61 months), we registered better results in Group A in the SST (p < 0.05), the VAS score (p < 0.01), the Constant and the Relative Constant Scale (p < 0.05). Radiological evaluation did not show a significant increase of fatty infiltration (p = 0.16) in Group A (no progression in 15 out of 17 patients -82.3%-, and an increase in 2 out of 17 patients -11.7%-), while in Group B a significant increase was detected (p < 0.01) in all patients; in regard to muscle atrophy, no cases of progression were detected in Group A (4 out of 17 patients -23.5%- showed an increased post-operative supraspinatus trophysm), while a significant worsening (p < 0.05) was found in Group B. In Group B a significant worsening of tendon retraction (p < 0.01) and of tear size (p = 0.01) was also detected. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical treatment of complete rotator cuff tears seems to decrease the irreversible changes that involve muscle belly.

AIM: The aim of this paper was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the FFI to the Italian language, and to assess the reliability of the Italian version of the FFI (FFI-I) for plantar fasciitis. METHODS: Fifty symptomatic patients affected by plantar fasciitis completed the FFI-I scale twice, at interval of one week. The translation of the FFI was performed according to international standards for translation of questionnaires. Test-retest reliability was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Internal consistency was measured by Cronbach α coefficient. Ceiling and floor effects were assessed. RESULTS: The process resulted in an intelligible version of the questionnaire. The reliability of the FFI-I was adequate, with an ICC ranging from 0.86 to 0.98 for test-retest reliability. The FFI-I showed an excellent internal consistency, ranging from 0.93 to 0.99 for all subscales. Three items involving disability and four items involving activities restrictions had highest proportion of floor score. CONCLUSION: The FFI-I is a reliable and valid instrument to assess clinical severity in patients with plantar fasciitis and it is suitable for daily practice. We suggest evaluating the total FFI-I score along with the distinct scores of the three subscales of the FFI-I in order to interpret more correctly minor changes in patient status during repetitive outcome assessments.

BACKGROUND: Bone tunnel enlargement after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is well documented in the literature. The cause of this tunnel enlargement is unclear, but is thought to be multifactorial, with mechanical and biological factors playing a role. AIM: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate how the different techniques may affect the bone tunnel enlargement and clinical outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-five consecutive patients undergoing ACL reconstruction with autologous doubled semitendinosus and gracilis tendons entered this study. They were randomly assigned to enter group A (In-Out technique, with cortical fixation and Interference screw) and group B (Out-In technique, metal cortical fixation on the femour and tibia). At a mean follow-up of 10 months, all the patients underwent CT scan exam to evaluate the post-operative diameters of both femoral and they underwent tibial tunnels clinical examination after 24 months. RESULTS: The mean femoral tunnel diameter increased significantly from 9.05±0.3 mm to 10.01±2.3 mm in group A and from 9.04±0.8 mm to 9.3±1.12 mm in group B. The mean increase in femoral tunnel diameters observed in group A was significantly higher than that observed in group B (p < 0.05) The mean tibial tunnel diameter increased significantly from 9.03±0.04 mm to 10.68±2.5 mm in group A and from 9.04±0.03 mm to 10.±0.78 mm in group B. The mean increase in tibial tunnel diameters observed in group A was significantly higher than that observed in group B (p < 0.05). No clinical differences were found between two groups and no correlations between clinical and radiological results were found in any patients of both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Results of the study suggest that different mechanical fixation devices could influence tunnel widening. The lower stiffness of the fixation devices is probably responsible of the tunnel widening through the fixation devices's micromotions in the femoral and tibial tunnels.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: A successful anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL) requires solid healing of the tendon graft in the bone tunnel. New biological strategies have already been proposed with the aim of improving ACL graft healing and therefore allowing a faster rehabilitative program. The aim of this prospective study was to clinically and radiologically evaluate the efficacy of nanohydroxyapatite bone-base grafts in facilitating bone-tendon incorporation after ACL reconstruction with hamstrings (HS). As far as we know, this is the first study that has tried to asses the efficacy of such a type of bone substitute on human beings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 40 male patients with chronic ACL rupture who underwent surgical reconstruction with 4-strand semitendinosus and gracilis tendon autograft via a single-bundle technique. Patients were randomly assigned to enter group A (20 patients, nanohydroxyapatite group) or group B (20 patients, control group). Preoperative and postoperative clinical evaluation was always performed, in a blinded way, assessing the Lachman and Pivot-shift tests and range of motion (ROM) of the affected knee. The Lysholm knee score, Tegner activity level, subjective and objective International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) forms, and 30 lb KT-1000 arthrometer evaluations. Patients underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam at 30, 90 and 180 days after surgery by the same musculoskeletal radiologist in a blinded way. RESULTS: As for the clinical evaluation, Lysholm, Tegner, IKDC scales, and KT-1000 arthrometer results did not show any significant difference between the two groups. Radiological data show a tendency toward better results in regard to the graft strength signal, the graftbone interface, and bone edema remodeling process, these parameters show significant differences between the two groups only at the short or mid-term follow-ups, while they are never significant at the mid-to long-term follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion the use of nanohydroxyapatite bone substitute does not provide significant clinical improvements in terms of better knee stability or patient satisfaction.

PURPOSE: The purpose of our study was to compare clinical and radiological results of two groups of patients treated for medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee with either conventional or computer-assisted open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO). Goals of surgical treatment were a correction of the mechanical axis between 2° and 6° of valgus and a modification of posterior tibial slope between -2° and +2°. METHODS: Twenty-four patients (27 knees) affected by varus knee deformity and operated with HTO were prospectively followed-up. They were randomly divided in two groups, A (11 patients, conventional treatment) and B (13 patients, navigated treatment). The American Knee Society Score and the Modified Cincinnati Rating System Questionnaire were used for clinical assessment. All patients were radiologically evaluated with a comparative lower limb weight-bearing digital radiograph, a standard digital anteroposterior, a latero-lateral radiograph of the knee, and a Rosenberg view. RESULTS: Patients were followed-up at a mean of 39 months. Clinical evaluation showed no statistical difference (n.s.) between the two groups. Radiological results showed an 86% reproducibility in achieving a mechanical axis of 182°-186° in group B compared to a 23% in group A (p = 0.0392); furthermore, in group B, we achieved a modification of posterior tibial slope between -2° and +2° in 100% of patients, while in group A, this goal was achieved only in 24% of cases (p = 0.0021). CONCLUSION: High tibial osteotomy with navigator is more accurate and reproducible in the correction of the deformity compared to standard technique. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic study, Level II.

AIM: The aim of this paper was to report clinical, functional and radiological results of 80 patients surgically treated with a combined mini-open and percutaneous surgical repair as proposed by Kakiuchi. METHODS: All patients were evaluated with a physical examination, evaluation scales, a functional test (Ergo-jump Bosco System), and an ultrasonographic exam along with Power Doppler Ultrasonography (PDU) (S/S). RESULTS: At a mean follow-up of 58 months no cases of rerupture were detected. VISA-A evaluation scale showed an excellent score in 63 patients (78.75%), a good score in 14 patients (17.5%), a fair score in two patients (2.5%), and a poor score in one patient (1.25%). Hannover scale showed an excellent score in 63 patients (78.75%), and a good score in 17 patients (21.25%). Ergo-Jump evaluation showed a 2.07% mean deficit of the affected limb at the Squatting Jump test, a 3.26% mean deficit at the Counter Movement Jump test, and a 0.0062% mean improvement at the Repetitive Jump test. Ultrasonographic exam showed in all cases a satisfactory recovery of the integrity of the operated tendon. The mean AP and LL widths showed a significant increase of 7.13±2.97 mm (+56.1%) and of 4.01±2.36 mm (+43.81%) respectively. According to the modified Öhberg score scale, PDU exam showed a grade +1 in 16 patients (20%) and a grade +2 in seven cases (8.7%). CONCLUSION: The absence of rerupture cases, the satisfactory functional and ultrasonographic results of the patients included in this study cause us to consider this technique as reliable and effective even in young high-demand patients.

A 27-year-old professional martial arts athlete experienced recurrent right knee patellar tendon rupture on three occasions. He underwent two operations for complete patellar tendon rupture: an end-to-end tenorrhaphy the first time, and revision with a bone-patellar-tendon (BPT) allograft. After the third episode, he was referred to our department, where we performed a surgical reconstruction with the use of hamstring pro-patellar tendon, in a figure-of-eight configuration, followed by a careful rehabilitation protocol. Clinical and radiological follow-ups were realized at 1, 3, and 6 months and 1 and 2 years postop, with an accurate physical examination, the use of recognized international outcome scores, and radiograph and MRI studies. As far as we know, this is the first paper to report a re-revision of a patellar tendon rupture.

A correct alignment of the tibial and femoral component is one of the most important factors determining favourable long-term results of a total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The accuracy provided by the use of the computer navigation systems has been widely described in the literature so that their use has become increasingly popular in recent years; however, unpredictable complications, such as displaced or stress femoral or tibial fractures, have been reported to occur a few weeks after the operation. We present a case of a stress tibial fracture that occurred after a TKA performed with the use of a computer navigation system. The stress fracture, which eventually healed without further complications, occurred at one of the pinhole sites used for the placement of the tibial trackers.

RESUMO

In this paper we report about a 50-year-old patient who underwent a surgical revision procedure for rupture of the right Achilles tendon with the use of Ligastic((R)) synthetic graft in 1995, and in which a strong reactive immune response took place over the graft 11 years after. As far as we know, this is the first case described in literature of long-term follow-up inflammatory reaction after the use of such augmentation grafts in Achilles tendon repair.

AIM AND METHODS: Spontaneous ruptures of the Achilles tendon are frequent among occasional and high level athletes. Despite the frequency of this problem, there is no agreement about the treatment of this pathology. The purpose of this study was to show the results of 20 consecutive patients (14 males and 6 females) surgically treated between 1995 and 2001 with a mini-open technique (mean follow-up: 52 months; range 20-95 months). Postoperatively, all these patients were assessed with a new functional scoring scale and a functional jumping test (Ergo-Jump Bosco System). RESULTS: A very low rate of minor complications have been reported and most of these patients are now practicing their favoured sport at the same pre-injury level. CONCLUSIONS: Mini open repair should be considered an excellent method of treatment of this pathology, with a very low rate of complications. The authors recommend this technique for young professional and occasional athletes.

Anatomical reinsertion of the avulsed distal biceps tendon is the recommended treatment, but the results are hampered by complications. The purpose of this study is to show the results of patients surgically treated with a non-anatomical reinsertion of this tendon. From 1972 to 2006, 26 non-professional athletic patients were surgically treated by suture of the tendon on the brachialis muscle tendon. At follow-up 23/26 patients underwent clinical and isokinetic evaluation. At a medium follow-up of 84 months, patients provided satisfactory subjective and objective clinical results. Flexion was restored in all patients, while a 10 degrees supination deficit was found in two patients. Dynamometric tests showed satisfactory results both regarding Maximum Strength Power and Endurance tests. Reinsertion of the distal biceps tendon on the brachialis tendon can be considered, in a long-term follow-up, a safe and effective procedure, with low complication rate.

The objective of this study is to report the clinical and radiological long-term follow-up evaluation of young patients arthroscopically treated for anterior tibial eminence fracture. Ten patients (mean age: 13.5 years) were treated between 1992 and 2006. At follow-up they were clinically and radiologically evaluated. Moreover, they underwent assessment with the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) forms, Lysholm and Tegner knee scales and measurement with the KT-1000 arthrometer. At a mean follow-up of 85.8 months, all of the patients reported a subjective good-excellent outcome. Objectively, the Lachman test was negative in seven patients and positive in three patients; six patients (60%) registered a slight (+) to mild (++) pivot-glide test. The mean value of KT-1000 arthrometer measurements was 3 mm; all knee scales showed satisfactory results. Radiological exam always showed good healing of the fracture. Fractures of the tibial spine often lead to anterior and rotational knee laxity. However, despite this instrumental finding, patients usually do not report any type of restriction in their functional or sports activities.

Tunnel enlargement is a frequent issue after ACL reconstruction and the "synovial bathing effect" is thought to be among the biological factors contributing to this phenomenon. Since the amount and the pressure of the synovial fluid inside the knee joint are higher and the length of its presence is longer in patients with post-operative septic arthritis after ACL reconstruction, we reviewed the tunnel enlargement in these cases in order to better evaluate this phenomenon in such a hostile environment. The null hypothesis of this study was that the highly represented phenomenon of the "synovial bathing effect" that occurs in an infected ACL reconstruction would not affect the amount of post-operative tunnel widening. A case-control study was done. At a mean follow up of 10 months (range 9-11 months) eight patients with septic arthritis following ACL reconstruction (group A) were radiologically reviewed using a CT scan and the diameters of femoral and tibial tunnels were measured. The results were compared with a control group (B) of uncomplicated ACL reconstruction cases operated by the same surgeon using the same technique. Although patients of Group A experienced a bigger amount of tunnel enlargement than patients of group B both on femoral (9.53 +/- 1.07 vs. 9.35 +/- 1.52 mm) and tibial side (10.07 +/- 1.3 vs. 9.92 +/- 0.74 mm), no clinical or statistically significant differences were detected between the groups (P > 0.05). No significant tunnel enlargement could be detected in patients of group A when compared with patients of group B. This seems to minimize the role of biological factors contributing to tunnel widening.

AIMS: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a predictor for cardiovascular mortality, and it is considered to be a surrogate marker of preclinical cardiovascular disease. This study aimed at evaluating whether fetuin-A plasma levels are decreased in patients with moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their linkage to plasma concentrations of hs-C-reactive protein (CRP), cardiotrophyn-1 (CT-1), tumor necrosis factor-ac (TNF-alpha), propeptide of collagen Type I (PIP) and to LVH. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We enrolled 64 moderate CKD and 55 essential hypertensives (EH) with normal renal function as controls. All the patients underwent an echocardiographic examination; plasma samples were obtained to measure routine clinical parameters and the molecules listed above (measured by ELISA). RESULTS: Among CKD there were 30/64 patients with LVH, and in EH group 14/55 subjects had LVH. Fetuin A was reduced in CKD when compared with EH (p < 0.0001). The comparison between CKD having LVH with those without LVH showed significant differences in plasma levels of fetuin-A (p < 0.002), TNF-alpha (p < 0.01) and hs-CRP (p < 0.001), CT-1 and PIP (p < 0.002). CKD with LVH had lower values of fetuin-A (p < 0.001), and higher values of hs-CRP (p < 0.001) TNF-alpha (p < 0.001), CT-1 (p < 0.001) and PIP (p < 0.001) than EH with LVH. The multivariate analysis of correlation demonstrated that in CKD patients hs-CRP (beta 0.42, p < 0.00006), and systolic blood pressure (beta 0.29, p < 0.02) were independent predictors of LV mass index. The relationship between LV mass index and fetuin-A did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: For the first time in moderate CKD patients, we demonstrate that fetuin-A is decreased and relates to LVH depending on C-reactive protein.
