BACKGROUND: Tritrichomonas foetus is recently found to be one of the causes of chronic diarrhea in domestic cats but there is no report of feline intestinal trichomoniasis in Iran. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 9 months female domestic short-haired cat was referred to our hospital with a history of chronic diarrhea over the past two months, and with an unsuccessful previous antibiotic therapy in another clinic. FINDINGS/TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Clinical examination revealed 39.8°C rectal temperature. Complete blood count (CBC) showed moderate inflammatory leukogram. By the wet-mount faecal assessment, moving organisms were observed. Rectal scarping dry-mount cytology revealed many inflammatory cells along with huge numbers of trophozoites with typical morphologic characteristics including central axostyle, undulating membrane, flagella, and one laterally located nucleus. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed and confirmed the diagnosis of T. foetus. After treatment with metronidazole and probiotics, the cat was completely recovered. CONCLUSION: This study represents the first case of intestinal trichomoniasis in a cat with chronic diarrhea in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Pulsed wave (PW) Doppler echocardiography provides a convenient and noninvasive tool for measuring cardiac output (CO) alternations after the administration of sedative drugs, but this is not a usual method for camelids. AIMS: The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes of the left and right ventricular outflow tracts (LVOT and RVOT), CO, and systolic time intervals following the intravenous (IV) injection of medetomidine (M) and xylazine (X) using PW Doppler echocardiography. METHODS: Twenty apparently healthy immature male one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarious) were selected and divided into four groups (five animals per group). Medetomidine and X were injected to the left jugular vein at two different doses of 10 and 20 µg/kg, and 0.2 and 0.4 mg/kg, respectively. Effects on echocardiographic parameters were assessed at 4 intervals: before, 3, 60, and 120 min after drug administrations. RESULTS: Velocity time integrity (VTI), maximum/mean flow velocity (Vmax and Vmean) and maximum/mean pressure gradient (PGmax and PGmean) decreased in aortic and pulmonic valves. Left ventricular ejection time (LVET) and LVET + pre ejection period (PEP) decreased and PEP and PEP/LVET increased in all groups except the low dose X group, 3 min after drug administration (P<0.05). The least values of VTI, velocity (V), PG and CO were observed after 60 min in the low dose X group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: A relationship was found between the intensity and the duration of changes in cardiac parameters and both types and dosages of the injected drugs. We concluded that X and M have transient depressor effects on the ventricular outflow tract and CO of healthy camels.

We present a study on the effects of inert ion implantation of Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) racetrack resonators. Selective ion implantation was used to create deep-level defects within a portion of the resonator. The resonant wavelength and round-trip loss were deduced for a range of sequential post-implantation annealing temperatures from 100 to 300 °C. As the devices were annealed there was a concomitant change in the resonance wavelength, consistent with an increase in refractive index following implantation and recovery toward the pre-implanted value. A total shift in resonance wavelength of ~2.9 nm was achieved, equivalent to a 0.02 increase in refractive index. The excess loss upon implantation increased to 301 dB/cm and was reduced to 35 dB/cm following thermal annealing. In addition to providing valuable data for those incorporating defects within resonant structures, we suggest that these results present a method for permanent tuning (or trimming) of ring resonator characteristics.
