RESUMO
In radiotherapy a dosimetric method is used nowadays to control the magnitude of the radiation axis deviation from the isocenter (RL) of a gamma-beam therapeutic apparatus (gamma BTA). However, the use of the method requires special costly equipment. Besides, it is fairly laborious. The dosimetric method does not permit the measurement of the distance between the isocentre and the virtual source (DISvirt) A gamma-metric method of the RL and DISvirt control in the gamma BTA is described. It is based on the photogammametric treatment of a gamma-picture of a special test object. The method is marked by high accuracy and safety. In addition, the gamma BTA can also be used in operation of accelerating therapeutic units.

The paper is concerned with the principles of systematization and classification of radiation therapy, approaches to the regulation of its terminology. They are based on the distinction of the concepts of radiation therapy and irradiation of patients. The author gives a concise historical review of improvement of the methodology of radiation therapy in the course of developing of its methods and facilities. Problems of terminology are under discussion. There is a table of types and methods of radiation therapy, methods and techniques of irradiation. In the appendices one can find a table of typical legends and examples of graphic signs to denote methods of irradiation. Potentialities of a practical use of the system are described.

The paper is devoted to a search for and scientific substantiation of practical measures to enhance the quality of irradiation in radiotherapy of cancer patients aimed at the reduction of the frequency of tumor recurrences, radiation reactions and complications. Inaccuracies, errors and faults in irradiation of cancer patients were analyzed and classified with regard to topometric, dosimetric, technical, technological and other features.

The Soviet ANET-W intracavitary neutron therapy apparatus is charged with 252Cf sources, the total mass of the radionuclide being 2100 micrograms. The radiation exposure of the staff has been studied and the results presented. Possible emergency situations have been analysed, methods of their prevention and liquidation worked out. Induced radioactivity in the patient's body has been estimated. Radiation dose levels for the medical staff are 10-15 times lower for the ANET-W apparatus than those for 252Cf sources administered by the manual series system but 10 times higher than those for the AGAT-W gamma-apparatus. The design, blocking system and emergency reset of the sources provide for safe work on the ANET-W apparatus. During liquidation of an emergency situation irradiation of the staff does not exceed 0.3 of the annual maximum tolerance dose. The level of induced activity in the patient's body is insignificant as in 10.5 min it does not exceed background values.

Semiautomatic contact contour plotter is designed to cope human body sections in supine position. Its operating principle and a design are presented. Experimental tests have shown that the error in contour plotting does not exceed 1--2 mm. It is useful in planning radiation therapy.

A system of the input of initial information on a patient into the ES-1022 computer in the on-line mode for dosimetric irradiation planning has been tested. A semi-automatic coding device (SACD) has been utilized. The system can operate in two modes: on-line calculation of dose distributions and irradiation conditions; archivization of input initial data.
