RESUMO

A multicenter survey was performed to evaluate a new semi-automated human immunodeficiency virus fourth generation antibodies and antigen simultaneous assay. This assay showed a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 99.6% among sera obtained from hospitalized patients or blood donors. Sera obtained from commercially available as well as in-house seroconversions were tested showing that HIV DUO is able to reveal an infected state in 11 out of 14 cases earlier than conventional tests. This new assay improves old test performances in terms of sensitivity, maintaining specificity at very high levels.

RESUMO

We provide data on the prevalence of SRH antibody to influenza A/Singapore/1/57 (H2N2). Approximately 10.3% of sera had antibody to the influenza A (H2N2) subtype virus in comparison to the 36.9% of positive sera to a representative influenza A (H3N2) and 31.5% to influenza A (H1N1) viruses. The percentage of subjects with antibody constantly decreased from the older to the younger age groups. Persons born after 1968 were essentially seronegative, whereas subjects born before 1900, and in the decade 1950-1959, showed the highest antibody levels to influenza A (H2N2) viruses. These age groups also appeared to have 'protective' levels of anti-HA antibody to influenza A (H2N2) virus. An antigenic variant of A/Singapore/1/57 virus was selected in the laboratory using a monoclonal antibody to HA. Serological comparison of the new in vitro variant with the parental virus and two naturally occurring viruses, namely A/England/12/64 and Tokyo/3/67, showed that certain human sera were able to distinguish the variant, indicating a restricted antibody repertoire in these adult and children's sera, providing an explanation of how such variants could actually arise in nature.

RESUMO

Between 1987 and 1991, the prevalence of IgG antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii was determined by ELISA in 28,247 serum samples belonging to 19,432 subjects of the area of Parma (Italy). The overall prevalence was 48.5%. The correlation of infection with age, performed on 420 sera, showed a significant increase of positivity until 30-40 approximately years. In consecutive sera obtained from 172 subjects, the IgG and IgM production was analyzed for about 8 months, and four different patterns were delineated which were comprehensive of the wide range of immunological responses to Toxoplasma gondii exposure observed. Among pregnant females the prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies was 48.7%, and 5 cases of seroconversion during the pregnancy were observed (0.27%) from which two cases of congenital toxoplasmosis originated.
