Introduction: Being overweight has negative implications for work productivity. Emotional intelligence and per-sonality traits have shown differences between normal-weight and overweight people (according to BMI). However, the evidence of associations with more objective indicators, such as body fat percentage, is scarce. The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between body fat percentage, emotional intelligence, and personality traits in young workers. Methods: A cross-analytical study was carried out on 125 young people living in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, with a mean age of 24.6 years (SDage ± 2.6). A sociodemographic data questionnaire, the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EQ-i-M20), and the Personality Traits Inventory (BFI-15p) were used. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) was used to quantify body fat percentage. Results: Both emotional intelligence and personality traits showed differences by sex. Women had lower emotional intelligence and higher neuroticism than men. Some domains of emotional intelligence, such as stress manage-ment, adaptability, and general mood, as well as neuroticism and openness traits, were identified as predictors for body fat percentage. Conclusions: Work environments must consider the dimensions of emotional intelligence and personality traits in planning strategies for health promotion and the prevention of diseases associated with excess weight (AU)

The creole hair sheep (CHS) developed adaptive advantages to the tropical climate, which allow them to have resistance to diseases, high fertility and prolificacy. Currently, there is little research on the productivity of CHS in systems associated with the cultivation of sugarcane, which makes it necessary to carry out research to promote its attributes. The purpose of this research was to analyze the productivity and body development of a crossing of CHS, using production parameters and growth curves.180 animals of single and multiple births were used; the follow weight was recorded: at birth (WB), at weaning (WW); at 210 days (W210), and furthermore, daily gains of pre-weaning (WDPRE) and post-weaning (WPPOS) were recorded. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with a GLM with the effects sex (S), type of birth (TB), number of births (NB) and period of birth (PB). The non-linear models Gompertz, Logistic, Brody, Richards and Von Bertalanffy were used in 1455 records of weights at different ages to perform growth curves. All analyzes were performed with the SAS statistical package. The R2, AIC and BIC coefficients obtained by the Gauss-Newton method were considered to select the best fit model. The males presented higher averages in the variables WB, WW, W210) and WPOS. The TB affected all the variables; The WB and the WPPOS were affected by the NB and the PB affected the WB, the WDPRE, the W210 and the WPPOS. The best fit model for the growth curves was of Richards.

Introduction: Gingival recession is a very common gum condition which may result in aesthetic alterations and dentin hypersensitivity, and increase the probability of cervical lesions. It is necessary to cover the root surface using periodontal regeneration techniques. Objective: Compare the amount of root coverage, probing depth and clinical insertion level, using coronally repositioned flap techniques with and without connective tissue graft in patients with Miller I and II gingival recessions. Methods: A total 16 patients with Miller class I and II gingival recessions were included in the study, from whom 50 teeth were selected which had been treated surgically to cover the recessions. The techniques used were coronally repositioned flap with and without connective tissue graft. Clinical measurements were compared at the start of the postoperative period and three months later. Results: Three months after surgery, root coverage, probing depth and clinical insertion level were 0.96 ± 1.33; 0.87 ± 0.63; 1.83 ± 1.7, respectively, for coronally repositioned flap with connective tissue graft, and 1.44 ± 1.19; 1.04 ± 0.52; 2.48 ± 1.48, respectively, for coronally repositioned flap. Root coverage intergroup comparison did not find any significant differences (p = 0.11). However, intergroup comparison of probing depth (p = 0.04) and clinical insertion level (p = 0.001), and all the intragroup clinical measurements (p = 0.001) did find significant differences. Conclusions: Coronally repositioned flap technique with and without connective tissue graft showed significant differences in terms of probing depth and clinical insertion level in Miller I and II gingival recessions. At three months' follow-up, no root coverage significant differences were observed for either technique(AU)

RESUMO

Recognition of the genes that influence livestock production characteristics has allowed researchers to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with phenotypic traits that contribute to higher productivity. The objective of this research was to associate SNPs in the genes calpain (CAPN), calpastatin (CAST), leptin (LEP), growth hormone (GH), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) with the growth characteristics birth weight (BW), weaning weight adjusted at 120 days (WW), daily pre-weaning gain (PRADG), adjusted weight at 210 days (AW210), and daily post-weaning gain (POADG), and the measures of the Longissimus dorsi muscle based on ultrasound, namely loin eye area (LEA), loin depth (LD), and back fat thickness (BFT), in Colombian hair sheep (OPC). The association between phenotypic and genotypic characteristics was made using the PLINK v.1.9 program using linear regression analysis. There was a statistically significant association (p < 0.05) between the CAST polymorphism (M/N) and BW, a tendency (p = 0.07) for an association between the T → C SNP of the CAPN gene and AW210, and a trend (p = 0.07) for an association between the A → G SNP of the IGF-1 locus and POADG. The LEA and BFT characteristics were not associated with a SNP, while PL was significantly affected by SNPs in the GH and IGF-1 genes. In conclusion, all the genes evaluated were polymorphic, the CAST gene significantly influenced BW, and the GH and IGF-1 genes were associated with LD characteristics. These results could be used to identify individuals with favorable genotypes to implement a marker-assisted selection method.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A growing link between prenatal exposure to misoprostol (PEM) and Moebius syndrome (MS) or sequence has been reported. Our objectives were to describe the craniofacial clinical manifestations associated with MS and to determine the frequency of PEM, comparing cases of exposure and nonexposure. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study of 140 patients with MS. Clinical evaluations, as well as 140 interviews with mothers residing in 39 cities or districts of Colombia, were carried out between April 2008 and May 2018. Additionally, previous clinical history of each case was reviewed. RESULTS: The average age of the patients with MS was 8.4 years (29 days to 48 years). All of them presented facial nerve involvement and abducens, 112 (80.8%) with bilateral facial paralysis. 98.5% presented craniofacial disorders, and there were no significant differences between those exposed and not exposed to misoprostol. Forty-seven percentage of patients (64 cases) presented PEM, in 98.4% of which abortion had been intended. CONCLUSION: PEM could have an influence in the appearance of new cases of MS by increasing the frequency of bleeding during gestation, without increasing the number of associated craniofacial malformations. We present the biggest series on MS and craniofacial findings in the literature, along with a meaningful reference for its understanding. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3b.

RESUMO

The simplification of fixed dose medications by using a single 'polypill' is an attractive strategy to improve adherence to medications which has shown benefit to cardiovascular risk factor control and cardiovascular disease prevention or delay in the progression of these diseases. We review the evidence obtained from a series of clinical trials demonstrating an improvement in adherence to the polypill compared to the use of each compound separately, and found similar or better control of the classical cardiovascular risk factors and a similar safety profile. These results suggest that the use of the polypill could have a beneficial impact in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, the polypill has the potential to improve cost effectiveness and is simple to use. However, before recommending the implementation of the polypill in programs aimed at primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention, we are awaiting the results of several current clinical trials aimed at measuring the impact on the frequency of major cardiovascular outcomes, particularly in low-medium-income countries.

Objective Identifying condom use frequency and factors predisposing, facilitating and reinforcing its consistent use in college students. Methods This was a cross-sectional analytical study involving multivariate analysis. The sample consisted of 397 students who were randomly selected using stratified sampling by faculty who had applied a computer-assisted survey entitled, "Recognizing my sexual health." Results 33 % of the sample population reported routine condo muse. The predisposing factors for regular condo muse were the intention to use one and high self-efficacy regarding use with casual partners. Facilitating factors revealed that condom use with a habitual partner increased the opportunity to use it 19-fold. Being male was associated with its use regarding both predisposing and facilitating factors. It is worth stressing that, amongst there in forcing factors, considering that a condom intensifies pleasure by feeling protected was associated with its regular use as was the condom being accepted by friends. By contrast, abandoning condom use for other contraceptive methods reduced the probability of it being used usually by 60 %. Conclusions Non-regular condom use in penile-anal intercourse and its displacement by other contraceptive methods provided clear evidence of young people's major concern concerning becoming pregnant rather than avoiding contracting an STI. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Identifying condom use frequency and factors predisposing, facilitating and reinforcing its consistent use in college students. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analytical study involving multivariate analysis. The sample consisted of 397 students who were randomly selected using stratified sampling by faculty who had applied a computer-assisted survey entitled, "Recognizing my sexual health." RESULTS: 33 % of the sample population reported routine condom use. The predisposing factors for regular condom use were the intention to use one and high self-efficacy regarding use with casual partners. CONCLUSIONS: Non-regular condom use in penile-anal intercourse and its displacement by other contraceptive methods provided clear evidence of young people's major concern concerning becoming pregnant rather than avoiding contracting an STI. Formulating and implementing programs simultaneously aimed at and placing equal emphasis on avoiding pregnancy and preventing HIV and other STI is recommended.

Objective: To identify factors which protect or expose young university students to HIV/AIDS, through a selfadministered,computer-assisted, survey. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional with multivariate analysis. The sample consisted of 397 students randomly selected through stratified sampling by faculty. Results: Regular use of condoms (used for your first and last sexual relation) occurs for 33,0% of the population. Protective factors for regular use of condoms were the preference for the condom (OR: 0,53, CI 0,33 to 0,66) and self-efficacy for condom use(OR:0,34;IC:0,206-0,568), The variables that appear as risk factors for habitual non-use of condoms were: No Intention of use with a regular partner (1,78 CI95 :1,57-2 ,02), Anal Sex (OR: 2,143, 95: 1,23- 3,7) and the displacement of condom use due to other contraceptive methods (OR 2,46, CI 95: 1,7-3,3). Recommendations: It's recommended that personnel offering advice on sexual and reproductive health to young individuals, provide the tools for the prevention of not only unplanned pregnancies but sexually transmitted diseases given the displacement of condom use among young people when different contraceptive methods are adopted. The survey, “Recognizing my sexualhealth, assisted by the computer” is an excellent tool to obtain information on sensitive issues like sexuality, to guide programs on sexual health promotion and care groups.

RESUMO

Antecedents: The Human Immunodeficiency Virus is currently considered a chronic disease; hence, quality of life is an important goal for those suffering the disease or living with someone afflicted by the virus. Objectives: We sought to measure the quality of life in individuals living with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome virus and establish its relationship with socio-demographic and clinical variables. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study with a sample of 137 HIV-infected individuals attending three healthcare institutions in the city of Cali, Colombia. Quality of life was measured via the HIV/AIDS-Targeted Quality of Life (HAT-QoL) instrument. The descriptive analyses included mean and standard deviation calculations. To determine the candidate variables, we used the student t test and the Pearson correlation. The response variable in the multiple linear regression was the score for quality of life. Results: Some 27% of the sample were women and 3% were transgender; the mean age of the sample was 35 + 10.2 years; 88% had some type of health insurance; 27% had been diagnosed with AIDS, and 64% were taking antiretroviral medications at the time of the study. Quality of life was measured through a standard scale with scores from 0 to 100. Participants’ global quality of life mean was 59 + 17.8. The quality-of-life dimensions with the highest scores were sexual function, satisfaction with the healthcare provider, and satisfaction with life. The highest quality-of-life scores were obtained by participants who received antiretroviral therapy, had health insurance, lower symptoms of depression, low frequency and intensity of symptoms, and no prior reports of sexual abuse. Eight variables explained 53% of the variability of the global quality of life...

Background: To accomplish health indicators among youth and prevent risks that leave severe consequences, it is important to offer integral health care. Objectives: To identify perceptions, experiences and expectations about health services for youth and health care agents from the Zona de Ladera in the city of Cali. To develop a concerted strategy with youth and health care agents to improve health services under the ®Friendly Youth Services¼ (SAJ abbreviation in Spanish) guide. Methods: Action - Research with participation of health-care personnel, youth, and adolescents from 10 to 19 years of age, was conducted in a public health-care institution in the city of Cali. The methodology included interviews, focal and discussion groups to analyze results and define steps to change services for adolescents. Advocacy and proposals about resource management were made to the local authorities and decision makers. Results: The main findings were lack of time schedules for services to adolescents and the absence of educational materials for them. The study noted a lack of resources like equipment, well-trained personnel – especially with positive attitude toward adolescents, appropriate location for delivery of services, and community participation in health matters. The interview was answered by 100 young individuals, 76% were female, ranging from 12 to 26 years of age; the higher score about satisfaction was for physicians and the lowest was for nursing assistants. Respondents mainly seek physician attention. The service most frequently sought in the last three months was dentistry, vaccinations, and emergency attention (19.7%, and 11.8%, respectively). Conclusions: It is necessary and useful to reorient health-care services for young individuals according to SAJ principles to emphasize health promotion, access to services, and skills and knowledge of health personnel to most appropriately care for the youth.

Introduction: The experience of symptoms by persons that live with the AIDS virus has influence on the adherence to antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, quality of life, and potential transmission of VIH. Objectives: To describe demographic, clinic and personal characteristics and habits of persons with HIV/AIDS that attend ambulatory health care services at Cali, Colombia. To recognise frequency and intensity of symptoms and signs that experiences persons with HIV/AIDS. To establish if there are differences between some demographics and clinical characteristics of HIV/AIDS patients with the symptoms´ experience. Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional design; it was applied to 137 persons living with the AIDS virus an instrument about demographic and clinical characteristics and a sign & symptoms check list. Results: The age mean was 35 years, 70% were masculine, 88% had some type of health insurance and 64.2% received ARV treatment. The more frequent signs & symptoms reported were thirsty, fear/worries, muscle aches, weakness, fatigue and depression. Persons living with HIV/SIDA have many psychological symptoms that determine the necessity of assess carefully the adjective of ®asymptomatic¼ that caregivers gave to them. Conclusion: Most persons living with HIV/SIDA had mental symptoms. Those emotional signs and symptoms can be explained because of the loss of health. Nurses as caregivers should give care based on their own models that involves family and others health care personal, and self-care for those patients.

RESUMO

Few studies have examined the presence of linguistic deficits in the preclinical phase of Alzheimer's disease (AD). A total of 19 healthy carriers of the E280A presenilin-1 gene mutation in chromosome 14 and 21 noncarrier family members from Antioquia, Colombia, were administered a neurolinguistic evaluation of lexical-semantic processes. Both groups were similar in age, educational level, and gender. Carriers scored significantly lower than noncarriers on naming of famous faces. Cognitive changes in lexical-semantic tasks can be detected before the clinical diagnosis of probable familial AD, and a neurolinguistic evaluation may be a useful tool in the early clinical diagnosis of sporadic AD as well.

RESUMO

Galphimia glauca Cav. is a plant used in Mexican traditional medicine as a "nerve tranquilizer". Previous studies have demonstrated that the methanolic extract from this plant species possess an anxiolytic effect. Galphimine B (GB, a nor-seco-triterpene), is the active principle, with an innovative action mechanism. Against this background, a standardized herbal medicinal product was developed from the aqueous extract of G. glauca (GgHP). The present work compared the therapeutic effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of the new GgHP with lorazepam on patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). By means of a controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical trial, outpatients of either sex who matched the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria with a score of > or = 19 points on the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A) were included. The experimental group was treated orally with GgHP in capsules twice a day for 4 weeks. The control group received lorazepam (1 mg) under the same conditions and presentation. A total of 152 patients were included in the trial (72 in the experimental group). From the first week of treatment, GgHP showed important anxiolytic effectiveness, very similar to that produced with lorazepam. Both treatments showed therapeutic safety (no alterations on biochemical analysis of hepatic and renal function). Nevertheless, concerning side effects, GgHP evidenced a considerably higher tolerability than lorazepam.
