RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to explore the prevalence of food insecurity among child and adolescent athletics practitioners and to investigate factors associated with exercise performance, dietary habits, body composition, sleep, and socioeconomic status based on food security status. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive, and exploratory study conducted in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, between June and July 2023. The convenience sample included children and adolescents (7-17 y old) of both sexes. We evaluated exercise performance, household food insecurity (HFI), dietary-related parameters, and other body composition, lifestyle, and social-related variables. Exercise performance was assessed using the counter movement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ), horizontal long jump (HLJ), 50-m sprint test (50-m ST) and throwing strength test (TST). The assessment of HFI was conducted using the food insecurity experience scale (FIES). Comparisons and associations were investigated based on food security status. RESULTS: The total sample size was comprised of 138 children (n = 42; 30.4%) and adolescents (n = 96; 69.6%). We found an association between food security status and sex (X2(138,1) = 4.42; P = 0.036). SJ was higher in the food security group than in the HFI group (t(117) = 2.112; P = 0.037; ES = 0.39). Sleep- and dietary-related factors did not differ between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the prevalence of HFI among child and adolescent athletics participants was approximately 40%. Regarding exercise performance, SJ was better in the food security group than in the HFI group. Concerning dietary-related data, the HFI group had a lower number of meals per day than the food security group, and other dietary data did not differ between the groups. Body composition and sleep-related parameters were similar between the groups.

RESUMO

Acquired Hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare autoimmune disorder, caused by the development of circulating autoantibodies against coagulation factor VIII (FVIII). AHA is associated with bullous pemphigoid in 2% of patients. We report a case of a 74-year-old man admitted with anemia and a tense subcutaneous and muscular hematoma in the right thigh. Blood analysis confirmed AHA. The patient had a recent diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid. Response to bypass agents and corticosteroids was good with bleeding control and normalization of FVIII and negative autoantibodies, respectively. In a 3-month follow-up period after tapering and stopping prednisolone, a relapse occurred, and immunosuppression was reinitiated. An early diagnosis and effective treatment in AHA are essential to reduce morbimortality. A careful tapering of immunosuppression is important to minimize FVIII inhibitor recurrence, as observed in this case.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Wnt/ß-catenin pathway plays a central role in the pathogenesis of most hepatoblastomas (HBs), that is, up to 60-80% carry activating CTNNB1 mutations. HBs can however also be the first manifestation of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). As this is a severe disease, it is important for the patient and related family members to firmly exclude FAP at an early stage. Current diagnosis largely depends on APC germline mutation detection on genomic DNA, which is associated with 10-20% false-negative results. Here, we establish and validate a tissue-based ß-catenin gene and immunohistochemical analysis, which complements germline mutation screening to exclude the diagnosis of FAP among HB patients. METHODS: Tumor tissues of 18 HB patients, including three FAP cases were subjected to CTNNB1 exon 3 mutational analysis and immunohistochemistry comparing staining patterns for total and exon 3 specific ß-catenin antibodies. RESULTS: Our novel tissue-based method reliably identified all three FAP patients. Their tumors were characterized by a wild-type exon 3 sequence and a comparable nuclear staining for both antibodies. In contrast, the non-FAP tumors carried missense CTNNB1 mutations combined with a clearly reduced staining for the exon 3 antibody, or complete loss of staining in case of lesions with exon 3 deletions. CONCLUSION: We have successfully established and validated a novel ß-catenin gene and immunohistochemical diagnostic method, which, when combined with routine germline DNA testing, allows the exclusion of the diagnosis of FAP among HB patients.

This study aimed to report the academic experience of the participation of the nursing course in an extension projectwith a research interface. The nurses organized health education activities with women of the night high school inpublic schools about the Pap smear. The group of participants consisted of 1035 women. An activity on healtheducation was held, with simulation of the exam, based on Paulo Freire's methodology. The public was really involvedduring the educational activity and had questions about cervical cancer, Pap smear and also about issues related tosexuality and the female body. The extension activity was of great value both to the teaching / learning of the nursingstudents and to the target population...

Epidemiologic, quantitative, descriptive, transversal study. Carried out on nighttime public school, female students to assess their knowledge level regarding the Papanicolaou exam. Out of the 1035 women who were queried, 476 were over 18 and signed a release form to be part of the study. The questionnaire consisted of objective questions capable of identifying the women's a awareness regarding the exam, as well as the social epidemiologic profile of the target group. A health educational activity simulated the exam to inform the women. After the simulation, the questionnaire was repeated and it has been concluded that while 51,3 percent of all the women answered all questions correctly on the first instance, 75,63 percent of then got it right on the second time. The activity helped the women understand, to an extent, the importance of this particular exam, but this understand do not is linear.
