RESUMO

The subgeneric name Monochoroterpes Kluge Jacobus 2015 is regarded here to be a junior synonym of Euthraulus Barnard 1932 (syn. n.), based on a wider understanding of more species from each group. Based on male and female imagines reared from larvae, the following species are described or re-described: Choroterpes (Euthraulus) alagarensis Dinakaran et al. 2009, Ch. (E.) armillatus sp. n., Ch. (E.) latus sp. n., Ch. (E.) atelobranchis sp. n., Ch. (E.) unicolor sp. n., Ch. (E.) nambiyarensis Selva-Kumar et al. 2013, Ch. (E.) angustifolius sp. n. and Ch. (E.) nandini Selvakumar Sivaramakrishnan 2015. All these species are distributed in southern India. One of them, Ch. (E.) latus sp. n., was collected in a plains river, Vaigai, in Madurai and in several localities in Sri Lanka, including a plains river, Malvatu, in Anuradhapura; formerly it was confused with another Ceylonese species, Ch. (E.) signatus (Hagen 1858). Here the characters separating Ch. (E.) signatus from Ch. (E.) latus sp. n. are reported and illustrated. Other species listed above were collected in mountain rivers in south of Western Ghats. One more species of Euthraulus is described without a formal name based a on mature male larva collected near Mumbai. The species description of Choroterpes (Euthraulus) kalladaensis Rekha et al. 2019 was based on specimens belonging both to Indialis rossi and Ch. (E.) angustifolius; since the type specimens are lost, and the description is based mainly on characters of Indialis rossi, we propose the following synonymy: Indialis rossi Peters 1975 = Choroterpes (Euthraulus) kalladaensis Rekha et al. 2019, syn. n.

RESUMO

As part of ongoing exploration of the mayflies of streams and rivers of Indian Himalayan regions, we describe two new species of the genus Tenuibaetis based on recently collected materials from Western Himalaya viz., Tenuibaetis himani Kubendran, Vasanth & Subramanian sp. nov. and Tenuibaetis kangi Kubendran, Vasanth & Subramanian sp. nov. Additionally, two new records from Eastern Himalaya viz., T. arduus (Kang & Yang, 1994) and T. inornatus (Kang & Yang, 1994) are presented. The biological notes of the stream/rivers are appended. A key to the known Indian species of the genus Tenuibaetis and a distribution maps are provided.

RESUMO

Distribution of the Kimminsula complex is limited by mountains of the Western Ghats in India and the Central Highlands in Sri Lanka. Indian taxa include the new genus Ghatula gen. n. with 2 new species, Ghatula rufa sp. n. (type species of Ghatula, described here from larvae of both sexes, female subimago, female imago and eggs associated by rearing) and Ghatula quadrimaculata sp. n. (described here from larvae of both sexes); and the genus Petersula Sivaramakrishnan 1984 with type species Petersula courtallensis Sivaramakrishnan 1984 (additionally described here from larvae of both sexes, female subimagines, female imagines and eggs associated by rearing), Petersula heptagenoides sp. n. (described here from larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing) and Petersula nathani Sivaramakrishnan & Hubbard 1984 (known as a single male imago). In Sri Lanka the Kimminsula complex is represented by the following taxa: the new genus Ceylonula gen. n. with the single species Ceylonula femoralis (Hagen 1858) comb. n. (originally in Potamanthus; redescribed here from larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing); the genus Kimminsula Peters & Edmunds 1970 with type species Kimminsula taprobanes (Walker 1853) [= Kimminsula annulata (Hagen 1858)] (redescribed here from larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing), Kimminsula fasciata (Hagen 1858) (redescribed here from larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing), Kimminsula podi sp. n. (described here from larvae, male subimagines, male imagines and eggs associated by rearing) and Kimminsula latifolia sp. n. (described here from larvae); a form intermediate between K. fasciata and K. taprobanes is described here from larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing; and the new genus Hubbardula gen. n. with the single species Hubbardula heterolepida sp. n. (described here from larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing). Systematic position of the Kimminsula-complex is discussed.

RESUMO

A new species of Platybaetis viz., P. selvai sp. nov. is described herein based on larval collections from Tangon stream in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in Eastern region of Indian Himalaya. It can be differentiated by the following combination of characters: (i) posterior margin of abdominal segments IX with rounded 'U shaped spines; (ii) anterolateral margin of gills IVII with minute setae; (iii) claw with 78 denticles; (iv) paracercus composed of 1011 segments; (v) hindwing pads reduced, small. Brief ecological notes are appended.

The concept of the Cincticostella nigra (Uéno, 1928) (Ephemeroptera: Ephemerellidae) complex is clarified and Indian and Nepali representatives of the complex are reviewed. Four new species are described viz. Cincticostella changfai Martynov & Palatov, sp. nov., Cincticostella funki Martynov, Selvakumar, Palatov & Vasanth, sp. nov., Cincticostella shinichii Martynov & Palatov, sp. nov. and Cincticostella wangi Selvakumar, Martynov & Subramanian, sp. nov. The larva of C. corpulenta (Braasch, 1981) is re-described, based on the holotype and paratypes. Cincticostella gosei (Allen, 1975) is recorded from India for the first time. Morphological differences of the species complexes of Cincticostella Allen, 1971 are analysed. A new species complex, Cincticostella gosei complex, is proposed. Summaries of distribution data and habitat preferences, as well as new larval diagnoses, are presented for all species of the Cincticostella nigra complex.

RESUMO

Seven species of the genus Epeorus Eaton, 1881 are described so far from India of which redescription is attempted herein for 3 species viz. E. (C.) psi Eaton 1883, E. (E.) gilliesi Braasch 1981, E. (E.) petersi Sivaruban, Venkataraman Sivaramakrishnan 2013 based on the fresh collections. Four species viz., E. (E.) aculeatus Braasch 1990, E. (E.) bifurcatus Braasch Soldán 1979, E. (E.) unicornutus Braasch 2006 and E. (E.) unispinosus Braasch 1980 are new records to this country. Totally, 11 species of the genus Epeorus from India are dealt with herein of which six belongs to the subgenus Epeorus viz. E. (E.) aculeatus Braasch 1990, E. (E.) bifurcatus Braasch Soldán 1979, E. (E.) gilliesi Braasch, 1981 and E. (E.) petersi Sivaruban, Venkataraman Sivaramakrishnan 2013, E. (E.) unispinosus Braasch 1980, E. (E.) unicornutus Braasch 2006 and four to the subgenus Caucasiron viz., E. (C.) kapurkripalanorum Braasch 1983, E. (C.) papillatus Braasch, 2006a, E. (C.) psi Eaton 1883 which larva is described in details for the first time and E. (C.) suspicatus Braasch, 2006b . The subgeneric status of E. lahaulensis Kapur Kripalani 1963 cannot be fixed due to non-availability of larval description. A dichotomous key to the larvae of available species in India is presented. Distribution of subgenera and species within India is discussed.

The Hyrtanellini (Ephemeroptera: Ephemerellidae: Ephemerellinae) from India and related regions are reviewed, including three new species viz., Serratella palatovi Martynov, Selvakumar Jacobus, sp. nov., Torleya simbalbarensis Selvakumar, Subramanian, Martynov Jacobus, sp. nov., and Torleya dibruensis Selvakumar, Martynov Jacobus, sp. nov.; and first country records of Teloganopsis jinghongensis (Xu, You Hsu, 1984) and Hyrtanella grandipennis (Zhou, Su Gui, 2000). Description of Serratella palatovi sp. nov. is based on material from Thailand, India and Nepal; Torleya simbalbarensis sp. nov. and Torleya dibruensis sp. nov. are described based on material from India. For now, the tribe Hyrtanellini in India comprises eight species from the genera Serratella Edmunds, 1959, Torleya Lestage, 1917, Teloganopsis Ulmer, 1939 and Hyrtanella Allen Edmunds, 1976. Additional records of Teloganopsis jinghongensis from Thailand, Torleya nepalica (Allen Edmunds, 1963) and Torleya coheri (Allen Edmunds, 1963) from Nepal also are provided here. All Indomalayan Hyrtanellini species are discussed to some extent.

RESUMO

Three new species of Leptophlebiidae viz., Choroterpes (Choroterpes) andamanensis Vasanth, Subramanian Selvakumar n. sp., Edmundsula meghamalaiensis Vasanth, Subramanian Selvakumar n. sp. and Megaglena agasthiya Vasanth, Subramanian Selvakumar n. sp. are described based on our recent exploration of mayflies from the streams of Andaman Island, Tamil Nadu and Kerala part of the southern Western Ghats. The genus Megaglena Peters Edmunds, 1970 has extended the distribution in southern peninsular India as represented by the occurrence of M. agasthiya n. sp. Larval key is provided to the known and new species of subgenus Choroterpes of India along with the distribution map of new species.

RESUMO

A new species of Notacanthurus Tshernova, 1974 is described based on larvae from India. Notacanthurus pange Vasanth, Selvakumar Subramanian sp. nov. can be distinguished from all known species of Notacanthurus by the following combination of characters: (i) gill lamellae 5-6 with accessory lobe; (ii) dorsal surface of femora with scattered spatulate setae (iii) male genitalia having penis lobes fused, 'V' shaped apically blunt with me-dian pair of spine-like titillators subapically and mesally; (iv) labrum with anterior portion straight and laterally curved; and (v) lingua of hypopharynx apically broad and convex. The distribution map of the new species is also provided.

RESUMO

A new species of the genus Baetiella is described based on larvae collected from Arunachal Pradesh, India. Baetiella subansiri Vasanth, Selvakumar Subramanian n. sp. can be distinguished by the following combination of characters: (i) gills (or gill sockets) on segments I-VI; gills I-V elongate, without tracheation, with numerous scattered pores on the surface and smooth fine simple setae along margin; gill VI reduced; (ii) posterior margin of metanotum and abdominal terga I-II each with a single posteromedian protuberance, terga III-IX each with a pair of much longer protuberances; and (iii) claw with two rows of denticles, outer row with 6-7 acute denticles increasing in length apically, inner row with 6-7 short and blunt denticles medially, subequal in length. New records of Baetiella armata Braasch, 1983, B. ausobskyi Braasch, 1983, B. imanishii Braasch, 1983, B. marginata Braasch, 1983 and B. spathae Shi Tong, 2015 from Arunachal Pradesh, India are presented based on the collection of larvae. The four species of Baetiella described by Braasch (1983) are redescribed based on freshly collected material. The Known distribution of genus Baetiella from Arunachal Pradesh, India is also provided.

RESUMO

A new species belonging to the subgenus Isonychia, of the genus Isonychia Eaton, 1871, is described based on larvae and imagoes collected from Moyar River, Nilgiri District, Tamil Nadu, India. The imagoes of I. moyarensis n. sp. can be distinguished from other described Oriental species of Isonychia (Isonychia) by the combination of characters: (i) forewing with rusty brown maculae in the costal, subcostal, and median areas; (ii) femur and tibia brown, fore leg pale, apices of tarsal segments brownish; (iii) males with distal angles of penes rounded, without serrations; (iv) second segment of gonostylus uniformly convex; and (v) sterna of tenth abdominal segment in female deeply cleft. Isonychia (Isonychia) moyarensis n. sp. can be distinguished in the larval stage from other known Oriental species by the following combination of characters: (i) abdominal terga II-IX with median dark brown maculae progressively larger with dark brown slanting streaks in lateral margins; (ii) trachea of abdominal gills I-VII unbranched; (iii) posterolateral projections on abdominal segments I-VII blunt and progressively longer than those of segments VIII-IX, sharp and distinct; and (iv) abdominal terga X pale yellow in anterior ⅓, and dark brown in the posterior ⅔. A key to the known larvae of Oriental species of Isonychia is also provided.

Questions are raised in effective utilization of farmer's wisdom by communities in their farming. Planners support to livelihood emphasize mostly of inputs from outside and not setting up sustainable goals. Formal institutions and planners of program are finding constraints and sceptical in wider dissemination of indigenous knowledge research system (IKRS). This is in spite of evidence that considerable number of farmer's in livestock sector depends on IKRS. In this context, it is pertinent to showcase dissemination potential of these knowledge system(s) in larger geographical areas. The review illustrates different challenges encountered while control of livestock ailments like ectoparasite infestation through IKRS. Several times, it was opinioned to provide or share IKRS to thwart ailments in a specific region. This is interesting as it was narrated how formal system is unable to recognize farmer's problem and challenges in integrating these sustainable practices. It has to be noted that disseminating activities seldom takes into account the experimental potential of farmers. This review paper articulates various evidences generated in enhancing diffusion thereby dissemination of IKRS. The nature of support extended by IKRS in entrepreneurial activity of smallholder farming units did not get adequate recognition. There needs to be minimum standard protocol in deriving benefit from such low-cost alternative technologies. This will enrich incremental innovation activities as per location specific need and provide scope for wider dissemination.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The formation of novel N-substituted-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro[1,3]-dioxolo-[6,7]-5H-[1]benzopyrano [3,4-c]pyridines were observed unexpectedly during the acid-mediated ketal removal of ethylenedioxy ketal protected 4-piperidones. The literature revealed that benzopyranopyridine derivatives are of scientific interest and some exhibit interesting biological activities. Diastereomeric resolution was utilized to isolate optically pure chiral molecules. RESULTS: The acid catalyzed deprotection of N-substituted-4,4-ethylenedioxy-3- [(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yloxy)methyl]piperidines, prepared by condensation of the corresponding phenols and mesylate derivatives, unexpectedly resulted in cyclodehydration leading to new benzopyrano derivatives, N-substituted-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro[1,3]-dioxolo-[6,7]-5H-[1]benzopyrano [3,4-c]pyridines. The process involves the deprotection of the carbonyl protecting group, and then the cyclization reaction occurs followed by dehydration to give the final product.These N-substituted-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro[1,3]-dioxolo-[6,7]-5H-[1]benzopyrano [3,4-c] pyridines were dealkylated giving the corresponding N-unsubstituted derivatives. The cis-1,3,4,4a,5,10b-hexahydro-[6,7]-2H-[1]benzopyrano [3,4-c]pyridine derivative was also obtained from the N-benzylated-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro[1,3]-dioxolo-[6,7]-5H-[1]benzopyrano [3,4-c]pyridine via catalytic hydrogenation. The resolution of the enantiomers was carried out using D-(-)-mandelic acid as chiral reagent. The absolute configuration of the S,S-mandelate salt derivative was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. CONCLUSION: The approach led to the construction of N-substituted-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro[1,3]-dioxolo-[6,7]-5H-[1]benzopyrano [3,4-c] pyridines ring systems involving the one-pot deprotection, cyclization and dehydration of N-substituted-4,4-ethylenedioxy-3- [(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yloxy)methyl]piperidines. The hydrogenation of the N-benzylated benzopyrano [3,4-c]pyridine derivative followed by resolution led to the formation of a new compound.
