RESUMO

Iron-doped TiO2 nanoparticles, ranging in Fe concentrations from 0.05 up to 1.00% w/w, were synthesized through a simple sol-gel method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) were used to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles. The characterization of the Fe-doped TiO2 nanoparticles revealed the predominant presence of anatase crystalline form, as well as the incorporation of the Fe3+ ions into the crystal lattice of TiO2. The photocatalytic assessment of the Fe-doped TiO2 nanoparticles indicated that the low iron doping titania (0.05 and 0.10% w/w) have a positive effect on the photocatalytic degradation of Methyl Orange under visible radiation. Moreover, FTIR monitoring of calcium hydroxide pastes enriched with low Fe-doped TiO2 revealed enhancement of carbonation at both early and later stages. Improved photocatalytic performance and increased lime carbonation, observed in lime coatings with low Fe-doped TiO2 admixtures, established them as invaluable contributors to the protection of the built environment.

RESUMO

Solid-state Hg(II) selective membranes were produced and assessed by means of X-ray absorption near edge structure in the total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF-XANES) setup and by the energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technique. Membranes were functionalized using four promising ligands for mercury complexation, i.e.: i) 4-(2-Pyridylazo) resorcinol (PAR), ii) thiourea, iii) calconcarboxylic acid (CCS), and iv) dithizone. A simple analytical procedure was followed, using miniscule reagent quantities, thus suggesting the process is also cost-effective. TXRF-XANES revealed that mercury complexes with the ligands, and is not simply adsorbed onto the PVC matrix, while the complexation was found to not be affected by the matrix existence. Mercury exhibited an increased oxidation grade and was covalently bound to the ligand functional groups, via a strong chemical bond. EDXRF revealed that the solid-state membranes can be used for mercury speciation and trace analysis from environmentally relevant matrices, such as tap water. The membranes could be a promising alternative to polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs), due to their simple configuration and high Hg (II) selectivity in aqueous media, but more research is needed. PAR appears to be the most promising ligand, followed by dithizone and thiourea. CCS had a minuscule preconcentration efficiency since it was preferably bound with Cu in tap water, indicating limited usefulness for mercury preconcentration. However, results suggest that, depending on the ligand, the solid-state membranes could be also possibly used for multi-elemental heavy metals analysis in water.

RESUMO

The application of multispectral imaging to discriminate myelinated and demyelinated areas of neural tissue is herein presented. The method is applied through a custom-made, multispectral imaging monochromator, coupled to a commercially available microscope. In the present work, a series of spinal cord sections were analysed derived from mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an experimental model widely used to study multiple sclerosis (MS). The multispectral microscope allows imaging of local areas with loss of myelin without the need of tissue labelling. Imaging with the aforementioned method and system is compared in a parallel way with conventional methods (wide-field and confocal fluorescence microscopies). The diagnostic sensitivity of our method is 90.4% relative to the 'gold standard' method of immunofluorescence microscopy. The presented method offers a new platform for the possible future development of an in vivo, real-time, non-invasive, rapid imaging diagnostic tool of spinal cord myelin loss-derived pathologies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To present the clinical application of the multispectral imaging colposcopic system (MIS colposcopy). METHODS: MIS colposcopy was performed on 123 enrolled women. After a 3% acetic acid application, sequential images were captured, analyzed, and stored automatically. Directed biopsies were taken from distinct marked acetic acid-responsive tissue areas indicated on the monitor, while a real-time assessment of the curves of intensity of the backscattered light (IBSL) vs. time was performed. Blind biopsies were taken from non-acetowhitening areas. Histological findings were correlated with MIS colposcopy results and compared with conventional colposcopy and Pap test results. RESULTS: Acetic acid-tissue interaction resulted in temporal and spatial alterations to the light scattering properties of the abnormal tissue that was analyzed. The shape of IBSL curve and the "relaxation time" (the time it takes for IBSL to decay to 1/e of its peak value) changed in accordance with the underlying lesion. More severe CIN lesions lead to higher maximum IBSL; longer durations of acetowhitening lead to increasingly delayed exponential decay of IBSL curve. To compare with histological examination, MIS colposcopy had a 1.7% false-diagnostic rate, while PAP test and conventional colposcopy had 24.4% and 22% false-diagnostic rates, respectively. A triple exponential function created a "pseudocolor" image that comprised the grade map of the lesion, and this is frequently representative of the duration/degree of the induced alterations. CONCLUSION: Improved diagnostic information can be gained by recording the optical information in a narrow spectral range with high spatial resolution. MIS colposcopy can be used in the diagnosis of uterine cervix pathological conditions and in the differentiation between CIN lesions.
