RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of thymol and carvacrol in inhibiting Escherichia coli and Salmonella serovar Typhimurium inoculated on a fresh green salad through the vapor phase. A film-forming solution was prepared by dissolving starch, sorbitol, and variying concentrations of carvacrol, thymol, and a mixture of both. The film-forming solution containing the respective antimicrobial agent was then added lid, which was sealed rigidly and hermetically to achieve different concentrations (105 mg/L of air of carvacrol, 105 mg/L of air of thymol, and a mixture of 52 mg/L of air of carvacrol and 52 mg/L of air of thymol). Each active package contained fresh green salad inoculated with E. coli or Salmonella serovar Typhimurium. The active packages were then sealed and refrigerated at a temperature of 6 °C for 48 h. Growth/inhibition curves were modelled using the Weibull equation, and consumer acceptance was evaluated. Carvacrol can reduce up to 0.5 log-cycles, while thymol can reach almost 1 log cycle. Blending the components with half the concentration has a synergistic effect, inhibiting up to 2.5 log cycles. Consumer ratings revealed no significant differences between the packages. However, the average score was 5.4 on a 9-point hedonic scale, evaluators' comments did not indicate dislike or a strong taste characteristic of thymol and carvacrol.

RESUMO

Tomato is one of the most important fruits worldwide. It is widely consumed due to its sensory and nutritional attributes. However, like many other industrial crops, it is affected by biotic and abiotic stress factors, reducing its metabolic and physiological processes. Tomato plants possess different mechanisms of stress responses in which hormones have a pivotal role. They are responsible for a complex signaling network, where the antioxidant system (enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants) is crucial for avoiding the excessive damage caused by stress factors. In this sense, it seems that hormones such as ethylene, auxins, brassinosteroids, and salicylic, jasmonic, abscisic, and gibberellic acids, play important roles in increasing antioxidant system and reducing oxidative damage caused by different stressors. Although several studies have been conducted on the stress factors, hormones, and primary metabolites of tomato plants, the effect of endogenous and/or exogenous hormones on the secondary metabolism is still poorly studied, which is paramount for tomato growing management and secondary metabolites production. Thus, this review offers an updated overview of both endogenous biosynthesis and exogenous hormone application in the antioxidant system of tomato plants as a response to biotic and abiotic stress factors.

RESUMO

An Acinetobacter calcoaceticus UTMR2 strain was evaluated in tomatillo plants (Physalis ixocarpa Brot.) using a factorial design with different potassium doses (100, 75, 50 and 0% of the recommended dose). In addition to the agronomic parameters, an analysis of the physicochemical, antioxidant, and metabolomic properties of the fruit was performed. The application of the inoculant affected several parameters of the plant (chlorophyll, weight, and contents of several mineral elements) as well as of the fruit (yield, maturity index, FRAP antioxidant capacity, and contents of protein, fiber, and fat). A multivariate analysis was performed by means of a PCA and a heatmap, indicating that the inoculant induced a strong modulating activity in tomatillo plants for the evaluated parameters, with a remarkable effect at low K doses (0 and 50%). The inoculated treatment at 75% of the K dose resulted in similar plant and fruit characteristics to the fully fertilized control. On the other hand, the biofertilized treatment with no K addition resulted in the highest values in the plant and fruit parameters. In addition, from the metabolomics analysis of the fruits at 75% of the K dose, the up-regulation of 4,4″-bis(N-feruloyl)serotonin, salvianolic acid K, and chlorogenic acid was observed, which may have a role in anti-senescence and resistance mechanisms. In conclusion, the rhizobacterial strain had a positive effect on plant growth, nutritional quality, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activity of tomatillo fruits at reduced doses of K fertilizer, which gives support for its consideration as an effective biofertilizer strain.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pretreatments and extraction conditions on the antioxidant and antifungal characteristics of garlic peel extracts. The effect of pretreatments (fermentation and steam cooking) on the yield, antifungal (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Botrytis cinerea), and antioxidant (total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity) properties of garlic peel extracts were evaluated. A selected pretreatment was applied to evaluate the extraction conditions (solvent, solvent concentration, temperature, and time) on the antifungal activity of garlic peel extracts. At last, garlic peel extracts obtained under specific conditions was applied to papaya and strawberry fruits as preventive and curative treatments against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Botrytis cinerea, respectively. Steam cooking pretreatment significantly increased the antifungal and antioxidant capacities of garlic peel extracts compared to the fermentation process. Garlic peel extracts obtained with methanol (60%) for 18 h (25 °C) showed the highest antifungal activity against both microorganisms assessed (57.57% and 75.76% for B. cinerea and C. gloeosporioides, respectively,) on in vitro assays. Moreover, in vivo results indicated that preventive treatment significantly reduced rot disease in papaya (88.95%) and strawberry (54.13%) fruits. Although more studies about the antifungal mechanisms of garlic peel extracts are needed, these results indicated that garlic peel extracts could be used as an antifungal agent.

A clinical case raised the question: are urologists familiar with the approach to lesions of the abdominal aorta or one of its branches? Bearing in mind that in our surgical actions we could be involved in a vascular complication, it is essential that we know these maneuvers in detail.

Introduction: Bladder cancer is a frequent pathology of the genitourinary tract, whose treatment causes morbidity and impaired quality of life, particularly in the subgroup of patients with bladder tumors classified as muscle invaders. In recent years, therapeutic alternatives have been sought for radical cystectomy + extended pelvic lymphadenectomy, which is currently the standard of care for patients with muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma. With the advent of less ablative oncological management profiles but without sacrificing oncological results and with new radiotherapy and chemotherapy techniques, organ-sparing therapeutic modalities such as trimodal therapy (transurethral resection of bladder tumor + chemotherapy + radiotherapy) becomes a viable therapeutic alternative with satisfactory long-term oncological results. Objective and methodology: This review aims to show the current status of trimodal therapy in the management of muscle-invasive bladder tumors, define the best patients to consider for receiving this therapy, present the oncological results compared with the management standard and the results in quality of life. A management algorithm is also proposed and recommendations in this regard are presented in clinical practice guidelines. Conclusions: Trimodal therapy is an alternative to standard management that leads to acceptable oncological outcomes and can be considered a treatment option in well-selected patients.

Summary Strongyloides stercoralis is a nematode that is characterized by causing a usually asymptomatic intestinal infection in immunocompetent individuals. However, in patients living with HIV and depending on their immune status, it can generate a hyperinfection syndrome with various complications due to dissemination to different organs. We present the case of a 30-year-old patient with a de novo diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus infection and lymphoproliferative disease. Within the laboratory workup, the presence of Strongyloides stercoralis was documented in the bone marrow. Despite having a CD4+ T lymphocyte count greater than 400 cells/microliter and having started treatment for this condition with ivermectin, the patient died due to a septic state associated with hyperinfection syndrome, which is why this is considered an unusual case that alerts the clinician to take into account the presence of the nematode in patients living with HIV.

RESUMO

The consumption of fruits and vegetables involves the disposal of the inedible parts, conveying challenges such as waste management and environment pollution. In recent years, there have been multiple studies aimed at finding alternatives that reduce the negative impact of food/agricultural waste. Since most studies done with by-products recommend their careful selection, the aim of this study was to verify if discarded banana peels could be disinfected until microbiologically safe and to determine if they could still provide nutrients to formulate food products with sensory characteristics acceptable to a consumer market after disinfection. Banana peels were collected from markets, restaurants, and greengrocers. They were disinfected, dried, and pulverized to obtain a flour which was subjected to microbiological and proximal analysis. Once its microbial safety was assured, this flour was incorporated into bakery and pasta products, replacing wheat flour with 5-20% banana peel flour (BPF). The sensory evaluation of the different products was carried out and, after verifying that the products were sensory acceptable, the proximal analysis was implemented. The formulated products were suitable for the addition of BPF up to 10%, in which the Acceptability Index was higher than 80% and significant increases in fiber and fat were achieved. We conclude that waste banana peel flour can be incorporated into bread and pasta products for human consumption to provide nutrients which might contribute to reduce this type of waste and to recover nutrients from otherwise disposed banana peels.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Introduction: Urinary tract injuries are common in the context of pelvic surgery; however, there is little information in the medical literature on the management of these injuries using a laparoscopic approach. The following is the clinical case of a patient with intraperitoneal bladder injury secondary to gynecological pelvic surgery that was successfully treated using a laparoscopic approach. Moreover, a management algorithm is proposed based on the scientific data available. Case report. A 39-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital with generalized abdominal pain and anuria three days after undergoing a left laparoscopic salpingectomy and resection of a migrated intrauterine device. Laboratory tests showed microhematuria, serum creatinine of 4.35mg/dL, and urea nitrogen of 35.2mg/dL. Computed tomography cystography showed a solution of continuity on the left posterolateral intraperitoneal bladder. The patient underwent successful laparoscopic treatment for the bladder injury, and two weeks later, retrograde cystography confirmed its adequate resolution. Conclusions. Based on the benefits of the laparoscopic approach and after extrapolating the outcomes of the laparoscopic management of bladder trauma, it can be concluded that the laparoscopic approach to surgical injuries of the bladder is a feasible therapeutic option.

Abstract Equity models properly predict monetary outcomes between two hypothetical employees who differ in inputs; however, they have been unable to predict monetary losses and conditions of n> 2; General Equation of Equity Resource Allocation (Equity Function) is proposed to overcome these limitations, so the aim of this work was to evaluate the generality of the Equity Function in gains and losses contexts. A non-probabilistic factorial design with convenience sampling was used. Sample size was calculated from the desired effect size, the final sample was made up of 30 university students of which 65% were women who were 19.87 years old (SD = 1.23). A hypothetical task of resource allocation was proposed to employees who differ in their levels of merits, in which throughout 18 scenarios according to a repeated measures design (3 levels of merits of A) X 3 (levels of merits of B) x 2 (Gains and Losses) the participants assigned amounts in monetary gains and losses. Data was analyzed using Repeated Measures ANOVA, the effect size calculation using the Partial Square Eta parameter and the simple linear regression analysis of each curve were performed to obtain the slope of each line. In the context of gains, main effects of employee A and B were found, no interaction effects were found. In the context of losses, main effects of employee A and B were contrasted, as well as interaction effects. Robust effect sizes were found for all factors. Analysis of regression equations slopes shows that the loss amounts were larger than the gains amounts. Additive integration rules were found in the field of gains and indications of multiplicative integration rules in the field of losses. The General Equation of Equity Resource Allocation adequately predicts the amounts of gains and losses, being more precise in the field of gains compared to losses. According from these results, it is proposed that cognitive process of assigning a gain is different from those of assigning a loss. Limitations and alternative courses of action were raised.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Despite relative agreement on the need for immediate peri-operative antibiotic prophylaxis in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), there is no consensus regarding antibiotic use the days leading up to PCNL. This study aimed to report the incidence of complications during and after PCNL based on a cohort study design. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included 101 patients in a prospective schedule for PCNL. Patients were divided into 2 groups. In the exposed patients (positive urine culture) the antibiotic was indicated according to the antibiogram report, 7 days before surgery, and 7 days after surgery, and in the non-exposed patient's intravenous antibiotic empirically was administered 8 h and 1 h before surgery. RESULTS: The incidence of complications for both groups was 19%. The exposed group presented complications in 27%, and 16% for the non-exposed. The relative risk of complications, in general, was 1.68 (95% CI, 0.77-3.6), the attributable risk was 11.09, and the percentage of attributable risk was 40.68%. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of positive urine culture is the main risk factor for the development of post-PCNL fever. Each treatment center needs to standardize its protocols to reduce the morbidity associated with surgery and to identify the main risk factors.

This review aims to evaluate the state of saffron's main bioactive compounds and their relationship with its commercial quality. Saffron is the commercial name for the dried red stigmas of the Crocus sativus L. flower. It owes its sensory and functional properties mainly to the presence of its carotenoid derivatives, synthesized throughout flowering and also during the whole production process. These compounds include crocin, crocetin, picrocrocin, and safranal, which are bioactive metabolites. Saffron's commercial value is determined according to the ISO/TS3632 standard that determines their main apocatotenoids. Other techniques such as chromatography (gas and liquid) are used to detect the apocarotenoids. This, together with the determination of spectral fingerprinting or chemo typing are essential for saffron identification. The determination of the specific chemical markers coupled with chemometric methods favors the discrimination of adulterated samples, possible plants, or adulterating compounds and even the concentrations at which these are obtained. Chemical characterization and concentration of various compounds could be affected by saffron's geographical origin and harvest/postharvest characteristics. The large number of chemical compounds found in the by-products (flower parts) of saffron (catechin, quercetin, delphinidin, etc.) make it an interesting aromatic spice as a colorant, antioxidant, and source of phytochemicals, which can also bring additional economic value to the most expensive aromatic species in the world.

RESUMO

Background: Previous studies have evaluated mathematical models of equity judgments of two hypothetical employees with distinct merits. They found that the model of proportionality adequately described the data based on an algebraic additive rule of information integration. Nevertheless, there is a lack of evidence concerning the effect of a context of monetary losses on the rules of information integration. Objective: To assess the effect of monetary gains and losses on equity judgments, and the effect of the personal context in which the participants are involved in decision-making. Method: A repeated measures design with within-subjects factors was utilized: 7 levels of A's merit x 5 levels of B's merit x 2 contexts (gains and losses) x 2 between-subject factors (third-party allocation and self-allocation). Results: Statistically significant differences appeared between third-party allocation and self-allocation conditions for gains [F (1,38) = 216.18, p < .001, η2 = .85] and losses [F (1,38) = 110.45, p < .001, η2 = .71]. Conclusions: The additive rules of integration appeared in the gains scenario while the subtractive rules together with an aversion to inequity were observed in the losses context. Keywords: information integration theory; equity judgments; social psychophysics; monetary gains; monetary losses.

Saffron is derived from the stigmas of the flower Crocus sativus L. The drying process is the most important post-harvest step for converting C. sativus stigmas into saffron. The aim of this review is to evaluate saffron's post-harvest conditions in the development of volatile compounds and its aroma descriptors. It describes saffron's compound generation by enzymatic pathways and degradation reactions. Saffron quality is described by their metabolite's solubility and the determination of picrocrocin, crocins, and safranal. The drying process induce various modifications in terms of color, flavor and aroma, which take place in the spice. It affects the aromatic species chemical profile. In the food industry, saffron is employed for its sensory attributes, such as coloring, related mainly to crocins (mono-glycosyl esters or di-glycosyl polyene).

RESUMO

As we tend to consume more and more via e-commerce platforms, the digital version of a dietary product's package can be one of the most important touchpoints that the consumer has with such product during the purchasing stage of the consumer's journey. Hence, a dietary food/drink properly presented via its packaging in e-commerce is key, for example, to nudge consumers toward healthier purchase habits. In this study, we assessed the role of different configurations of visual cues commonly present in a product's packaging (jar vs. bag, transparent vs. opaque, labeled vs. unlabeled) in the expectations associated with dietary cookies when presented in a digital environment. A between-participants study was conducted where eight different packages with different combinations of the three aforementioned features were digitally evaluated by the participants. The results suggest that the presence (vs. absence) of labeling triggered the highest ratings on most assessed dimensions (product quality, healthiness, lightness, sweetness, crumbliness, price, tastiness, greediness for product, product/packaging liking). Moreover, transparent (vs. opaque) packaging tends to yield higher expectations concerning this product's quality (i.e., product liking, package liking, greediness), though it has an opposite effect on the expected healthiness for such cookies. Some particular interactions between these three visual cues were also observed and are discussed as part of the obtained results. In summary, our results point to how the visual appearance of packaging can be strategically used in order to potentially nudge consumers toward healthier cookie purchase habits.

RESUMO

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most important issues in modern medicine. In developing countries, the use of antibiotics is a common practice, and due to this, antibiotic resistance has increased. The objective of this research was to update and report on the microbiological profile of urinary tract infections based on the number of positive urine cultures (UCs), resistance, sensitivity, and the prevalence of bacterial strains. The results were obtained from the database of a tertiary medical facility in Western Mexico. The number of positive UCs was 1769 from inpatients and outpatients who were users of medical services in the hospital from January to December of 2017. The most commonly isolated microorganism was E. coli, with 1225 cases, of which 603 (49.2%) were ESBL (Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-producing bacteria) strains. The resistance rate of nitrofurantoin was 36.6%, and meropenem showed the most promising results with a resistance rate of only 7.1%. Resistances to quinolones and cephalosporins among the isolates investigated were 51%-67%. Based on our results, it is necessary to increase controls and to improve management protocols in order to achieve better medical practices by reducing antibiotic resistance.

Abstract Objetive. To describe the microbiological profile and resistance spectrum of the community acquired bacterial infection of the San Jose university hospital from june 2016 to december 2019 Methodology. A retrospective transverse descriptive study of microbial organisms found in adults in the institution from June 2016 to December 2019, the study is based in the hospital data. The analysis of the information was made with SATA 15.0. Results. 5121 samples were included, 61% from the emergency department. Urine culture was the most frequent sample taken. Escherichia coli was the most frequent isolated bacterial, in all samples, urine culture, blood culture, and peritoneal culture. Ampiciline r and ampiciline/sulbactam was high up to 68% of the E. Coli cultures. 20% of Staphylococcus aureus were methicillin resistant. Unusual carbapenemic resistance was found in the Pseudomona aeruginosa isolates.. Discussion. The data of the bacterial resistance spectrum Concord which was is found in the general medical literature, nevertheless the HUSJ, has a microbial behaviour that must be studied thoroughly. Conclusion. The antibiotic bacterial resistance to common used antibiotics is high. Adjustments are required in the instucional and national management guidelines

RESUMO

The aim of this work was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo effectiveness of thymol and carvacrol added to edible starch films and coatings against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. In vitro evaluation consisted of determining minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of carvacrol and thymol was determined at different pH values against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. With MIC values, binary mixtures were developed. From these results, two coatings formulations were in vivo evaluated on mango and papaya. Physicochemical analysis, color change, fruit lesions and C. gloeosporioides growth were determined during storage. In vitro assay indicated that the MIC value of carvacrol and thymol against C. gloeosporioides was 1500 mg/L at pH 5. An additive effect was determined with 750/750 and 1125/375 mg/L mixtures of carvacrol and thymol, respectively. Coated fruits with selected mixtures of carvacrol and thymol presented a delay in firmness, maturity index and color change. Moreover, a fungistatic effect was observed due to a reduction of lesions in coated fruits. These results were corroborated by the increase in the lag phase value and the reduction of the growth rate. Carvacrol and thymol incorporated into edible films and coatings are able to reduce the incidence of anthracnose symptoms on mango and papaya.

SUMMARY INTRODUCTION: Acute ischemic stroke is a pathology of high prevalence that generates great disability and mortality, but when it receives thrombolytic treatment, it can show improvement in disability scales. In Colombia, there are few studies in which experience with these medications is reported and in the Cauca District Cauca, there is none. The objective of this study is to describe the demographic, clinical and short-term outcome characteristics of patients with stroke undergoing thrombolysis, in a hospital in the city of Popayan between 2010 and 2019. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective case series evaluating risk factors, clinical severity using the NIHSS scale, favorable outcomes and complications derived from thrombolysis. RESULTS: 29 patients with an average of 68 years were included, 62.1 % were men and the most frequent comorbidity was hypertension (72.4 %). The average of the NIHSS score at admission was 14 points (SD: 4.99). Thrombolytic therapy decreased 4.5 points (95 % CI 2.7 - 6.3, p: 0.00). The cerebral hemorrhage, after the intervention was 25.9 % and the mortality was 15.4 %. CONCLUSION: Thrombolytic therapy in patients with ischemic stroke results in improvement of the NIHSS scale measured at the end of thrombolysis and at 24 hours. Failures were recognized in the approach and treatment, as well as a percentage of bleeding greater than reported in the literature. Further studies are required to corroborate the results, due to the limited number of participants.
