RESUMO

Bioactive materials have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional restorative materials as part of more conservative dentistry. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength (SBS) and microleakage of a new bioactive restorative material, two bulk-fill restorative composites, and a conventional composite at 24 h, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks. Three hundred and sixty molars and premolars were divided into four groups: ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE Restorative™, Filtek™ Bulk-Fill Restorative Composite, Tetric® N-Ceram Bulk-Fill Composite, and G-aenial® Composite. The normality of the data was determined with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, then the two-way ANOVA and Fisher's test were used for analyzing SBS data, and the Kruskal-Wallis and DSCF tests were conducted to analyze the microleakage. In the SBS test, there were no statistically significant differences between materials (p = 0.587), and the relation between material and time (p = 0.467), time points showed statistically significant differences (p = 0.016). As for the microleakage, statistically significant differences were found for all three time periods (p < 0.05), showing the conventional composite to have the lowest microleakage, followed by the bioactive material, and lastly the two bulk-fill composites. In conclusion, the new bioactive material has similar evaluated properties to bulk-fill composites (bond strength) and conventional composites (bond strength and microleakage) and can be used as an alternative restorative material.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the level of oral health among Spanish and immigrant children residing in Barcelona, Spain. Oral health status was evaluated in 1400 children aged 3 to 14 years between September 2018 and June 2019. Multiple variables (dental caries lesions, exodontia, trauma, malocclusions, gingivitis, fillings, stainless steel crowns in primary dentition, and pit and fissure sealings in permanent dentition) were compared in both populations. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) were found in the prevalence of caries in the primary dentition, which was higher in the immigrant group (62.3%) than in the Spanish group (42.6%). For the permanent dentition, the prevalence of dental caries lesions was 12.2% in Spanish children and 16.4% in immigrant children, showing statistically significant differences (p = 0.026) between the two groups. The prevalence of fillings in the primary dentition was 14.6% in Spanish and 12.5% in immigrant children (p = 0.253). Regarding the permanent dentition, the number of fillings was also higher in the Spanish population (6.8%) compared to the immigrant population (3.5%), again evidencing statistically significant differences (p = 0.006). Our findings suggest a better oral health status in Spanish children than in immigrant children.

Aim: to determine the prevalence of ankyloglossia in new-borns of the Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Hospital in the Principado de Andorra, Europe, as well as the existing relationship with auxological data or other malformations or associated diseases. Material and methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective population study of 306 newborns was carried out over a period of 8 months. Eleven variables were studied: presence or no of ankyloglossia, type of short frenulum, height, weight, cranial perimeter, sex, Rh and blood group, gestational age, malformations and associated neonatal pathologies, confidentially and anonymously, correlating them to see if there was any association between them. Results: A total of 306 new-borns were included in the study (52% male and 48% female). The prevalence of ankyloglossia was 6,54% (n=20). Of the total of men (159/306), 8,125% (n=13) presented ankyloglossia, while woman (147/306), the prevalence was 4,79% (n=7), without finding statistically significant differences regarding sex (p-value=0,24). According to the Coryllos classification, type II was the most frequent (95% of cases) and 4,58% of infants with ankyloglossia exhibited pathology/malformation. Conclusions: The prevalence of ankyloglossia in new-borns in Andorra, Europe, is similar to that observed by other authors in similar research. No association was observed between the presence or not of ankyloglossia and the variables studied

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To asses whether dental eruption order can play a role in the early diagnosis of crossed laterality. STUDY DESIGN: Dental eruption pattern along with eye, ear, hand and foot lateralism were examined on 131 children between 6 to 8 years old from public schools from a multietnic population area of Barcelona city. Statistic methods (Statgraphics Plus 5.1 program) were used to evaluate data recollected. RESULTS: Only foot and dentition lateralities behave as independent variables regarding hand laterality. So dental eruption laterality (along with the foot one) would be one of the parameters more related to hand laterality given that dentition variable relationship is greater that the foot one. This suggests that tooth eruption could be more clinically relevant. Crossed laterality hand-foot is significantly more predominant in men (13%) than in women (1,6%). Meanwhile, the relationship between hand and dentition didn't show any influence of sex. CONCLUSIONS: Dental eruption order, can be used as a good parameter in the determination of the patient's laterality
