RESUMO

We report the observation of the generation and routing of single plasmons generated by localized excitons in a WSe2 monolayer flake exfoliated onto lithographically defined Au-plasmonic waveguides. Statistical analysis of the position of different quantum emitters shows that they are (3.3 ± 0.7) times more likely to form close to the edges of the plasmonic waveguides. By characterizing individual emitters, we confirm their single-photon character via the observation of antibunching in the signal ( g(2)(0) = 0.42) and demonstrate that specific emitters couple to modes of the proximal plasmonic waveguide. Time-resolved measurements performed on emitters close to and far away from the plasmonic nanostructures indicate that Purcell factors up to 15 ± 3 occur, depending on the precise location of the quantum emitter relative to the tightly confined plasmonic mode. Measurement of the point spread function of five quantum emitters relative to the waveguide with <50 nm precision is compared with numerical simulations to demonstrate the potential for greater increases in the coupling efficiency for ideally positioned emitters. The integration of such strain-induced quantum emitters with deterministic plasmonic routing is a step toward deep-subwavelength on-chip single quantum light sources.

RESUMO

Many alternative health practices are gaining popularity in traditional medical centers throughout the country. However, social workers and allied health professionals are rarely educated in these practices. The collaborative pilot research project discussed in this article involved community health providers and a state university department of social work. The project, conducted in rural health clinics, introduced an approach to skillful, safe, and appropriate use of touch synthesized with an awareness of the breath for giver and receiver to a group of Mexican Americans diagnosed with diabetes and their families. This alternative health practice holds promise for reducing stress, promoting health and well-being, and building relationships and warrants further study.

RESUMO

There presented the results of studying the mechanisms of intersensory interactions and sensory adaptations, the dynamics of the stability of adaptive changes in the short- and long-term space missions by phenomenology of spontaneous and visually-induced illusory responses. It is shown that adaptation to microgravity even under good subjective health condition and the absence of anomalous subjective reactions was accompanied the change in the interaction of the sensory systems. For the first time there recorded the previously unknown phenomena: an inversion of vertical vection illusion (VVI) on vertical and sinusoidal optokinetic stimulation; disruption of the perception of body scheme at the instant of VVI; the change of character and the initiation of VVI asymmetry; the decrease of thresholds and the intensity increase of VVI. In the period of long-term stay in microgravity the anomalous perceptive reactions (the period of predominating adaptation gave way to the period of predominance of disadaptation). The hypothesis for the mechanisms of revealed changes was suggested.

RESUMO

Guidewire-directed biopsy is the predominant method of evaluating nonpalpable breast lesions detected by mammography. It is an accurate and safe procedure for obtaining a histologic evaluation of abnormal tissue, leading to early diagnosis and improved survival rates. This report reviews 526 needle localizations and biopsies of nonpalpable breast lesions performed in two community hospitals over a 39-month period and compares early results with those achieved in the last 13 months of the study. This review indicates that as experience in using this modality increased, the cancer detection rate increased and the percentage of invasive cancers decreased. The percentage of cancers detected in the final 13 months of the study (19%, Group II) was higher than in the first 26 months of the study (13%, Group I). Although microcalcifications were found in 24 per cent of the mammograms leading to a diagnosis of cancer, they did not prove to be a reliable indicator of malignancy in this study.

RESUMO

The dielectric constant and spontaneous polarization of fine-grained BaTiO(3) prepared from powder produced by metalloorganic decomposition technology were studied. The room-temperature dielectric constant of BaTiO(3) was found to increase sharply with increase in grain size, reach a maximum at about 0.4 mum, and decrease with further increase in grain size. Spontaneous polarization continuously decreased with decrease in grain size. A model is proposed to explain the grain size dependence of the dielectric constant.

RESUMO

Traumatic, clostridial myonecrosis is a rare and serious complication of wounds. Nontraumatic, metastatic, clostridial myonecrosis may be caused by carcinoma of the large intestine. Nontraumatic myonecrosis becomes evident with localized pain, generalized toxicity, local signs of inflammation, and crepitation. Serum creatine kinase determinations may be of help in diagnosing patients suspected of having acute myonecrosis. Immediate heroic surgical intervention, usually with demonstration of Clostridium septicum, is mandatory to control the myonecrosis. Appropriate antibiotic therapy is a valuable adjunct to surgical intervention, and penicillin in massive doses appears to be the agent of choice for the clostridia. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help in the optimal control. General supportive measures, including frequent blood transfusions, are most important. To save the life of the patient with nontraumatic, metastatic, clostridial myonecrosis, it is necessary, as soon as the patient's general condition permits, to diagnose and eliminate the cause of the myonecrosis. In addition to the case reported, 16 cases have been reported in the literature, making a total of 17. Five patients have survived (survival rate, 29 percent).
