RESUMO

Country-specific systematic reviews and meta-analyses have been proposed to compile the available literature and rank methods based on their performance for a target population. India is a country with a vast scientific literature on dental age estimation. This systematic review aimed to provide evidence to help the decision of experts regarding the method of choice for dental age estimation in India. The research protocol was registered in Open Science Framework. Literature Search was performed in Embase, LILACS, MedLine (via PubMed), SciELO, Scopus and Web of Science. Grey Literature was searched in Google Scholar and ProQuest. Observational cross-sectional studies that compared chronological and estimated ages using Demirjian (original [DEM] and Chaillet's modification [modified-DEM]) and Acharya (ACH) methods were included. JBI tool was used to assess the risk of bias. The search detected 9799 studies, out of which 56 were eligible (n=13,107 panoramic radiographs of Indian individuals). Low risk of bias was registered for 48 studies, while 8 presented a moderate risk of bias. The meta-analysis showed a standardized mean difference between chronological and estimated ages of -0.11 (95%CI: -0.29; 0.07), 0.74 (95%CI: 0.39; 1.09), and -0.01 (95%CI: -0.23; 0.22) years for DEM, modified-DEM and ACH, respectively. High heterogeneity (I2=88-93%) was observed across studies for all the methods, including subgroup analyses based on sex. This study ranked ACH, DEM and modified-DEM (from the best to the worse) performances in the Indian population.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of commercial mouth rinses on color, roughness, sorption (SR), and solubility (SL) of resin composites. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Disc-shaped specimens (stage I: 6 mm × 2 mm; stage II: 10 mm × 1.5 mm) were made from the following resin composites (n=10): conventional nanofilled (Filtek Z350XT, 3M Oral Care), conventional nanohybrid (Luna, SDI), bulk-fill nanofilled (Filtek One Bulk-Fill, 3M Oral Care), and bulk-fill nanohybrid (Aura Bulk-Fill, SDI) exposed to distilled water (control), blue mouth rinse without alcohol (Colgate Total 12 Clean Mint, Colgate-Palmolive), or blue mouth rinse with alcohol and essential oil (Listerine Tartar Control, Johnson & Johnson). In stage I, tests were performed at the baseline, and after the immersion in solution time points to evaluate coordinates of the CIEL*a*b* system (ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*), general color change (ΔEab, ΔE00, and ΔSGU), and surface roughness (Ra). In stage II, SR and SL were evaluated (ISO 4049:2019) after immersion in the solutions for 7 days. The results were evaluated by generalized linear models (Ra, SR), Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn tests (color, SL), with α = 0.05. RESULTS: There were no significative differences for Ra between the solutions. Both mouth rinses promoted significantly negative ΔL* (Luna), Δa* (Filtek One Bulk-fill), and Δb* (all materials except conventional nanofilled resin composite). Mouth rinse without alcohol promoted significantly negative Δa* on all resin composites tested. Both mouth rinses promoted higher ΔEab and ΔE00 for bulk-fill resin composites compared to control. Mouth rinse with alcohol caused higher ΔSGU for bulk-fill nanofilled resin composite. It also promoted greater SR in all the resin composites compared with mouth rinse without alcohol and higher SR in nanohybrid resin composites compared with control. Both mouth rinses promoted higher SL values in Luna and differed significantly from control. CONCLUSIONS: The physical properties were manufacturer dependent and mediated by mouth rinses. The mouth rinses promoted color changes in the resin composites, pointing out that bulk-fill resin composites were more affected by these effects, especially when the mouth rinse contained essential oil and alcohol.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the flexural strength of two types of high-viscosity resin composites (conventional or bulk-fill) that were repaired with either high-viscosity composites (conventional or bulk-fill) or low-viscosity composites (conventional or bulk-fill) of the same manufacturer (3M Oral Care, St Paul, MN, USA). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Specimens (25 mm × 2 mm × 2 mm) of both conventional nanofilled resin (Filtek Z350XT), and bulk-fill nanofilled resin (Filtek One Bulk Fill) were prepared. After fracture of the specimens in the 3-point bending test (initial), half of the specimens were repaired immediately afterwards (24 hours), and the other half were repaired after 6 months of storage in distilled water. Repairs were performed with (n=15) high-viscosity resin composites (Filtek Z350XT, Filtek One Bulk Fill), or their low-viscosity versions (Filtek Supreme XT Flow, Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable Restorative). The repair was performed by roughening the surface and applying phosphoric acid, silane, and adhesive. The bending test (results reported in MPa) was performed in a universal testing machine, and the fracture pattern was determined. Data were evaluated by generalized linear models, chi-square test and the Fisher exact test (α=0.05). RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the former pair of high-viscosity resins in terms of initial flexural strength (p=0.42). The repairs performed with low-viscosity resin composites after 24 hours or 6 months obtained higher MPa values compared with those using high-viscosity composites (p=0.0006). There was a significant decrease in MPa values when the repair was performed after 24 hours and an increase after 6 months, regardless of the material (p<0.0001). After 6 months, fractures involving the old (conventional) resin were more frequent in the repair performed with bulk-fill resin composites compared with the conventional composites (p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Considering the tested products, the material to be repaired did not influence the flexural strength of the repair composite; however, the use of the low-viscosity resin composites resulted in greater flexural strength of the repaired material. The repair of the aged composite resulted in an increase in its flexural strength, regardless of the material repaired or used to perform the repair.

The aim of this systematic review was to determine the most prevalent complications resulting from total temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacement. An electronic search was performed using the Embase, LILACS, MEDLINE (via PubMed), SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to June 2022. Prospective and retrospective clinical studies on patients who underwent TMJ replacement were included. Two reviewers performed the study selection, data extraction, and individual risk of bias assessment using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools. The pooled prevalence of each complication was calculated through a proportion meta-analysis using the random-effects model. Twenty-eight studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. All of the eligible studies had a low risk of bias. The results of the meta-analysis revealed that the most prevalent complication was paresis or paralysis of the facial nerve branches (7.8%; 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.6-15.1%, I2 = 94.5%), followed by sensory alterations (1.8%; 95% CI 0.6-4.9%, I2 = 88.8%), heterotopic bone formation (1.0%; 95% CI 0.1-2.5%, I2 = 75.8%), and infection (0.7%; 95% CI 0.1-1.6%, I2 = 22.7%). In conclusion, TMJ replacement has a low prevalence of complications, and most of them can be managed successfully.

Seven Fusarium species complexes are treated, namely F. aywerte species complex (FASC) (two species), F. buharicum species complex (FBSC) (five species), F. burgessii species complex (FBURSC) (three species), F. camptoceras species complex (FCAMSC) (three species), F. chlamydosporum species complex (FCSC) (eight species), F. citricola species complex (FCCSC) (five species) and the F. concolor species complex (FCOSC) (four species). New species include Fusicolla elongata from soil (Zimbabwe), and Neocosmospora geoasparagicola from soil associated with Asparagus officinalis (Netherlands). New combinations include Neocosmospora akasia, N. awan, N. drepaniformis, N. duplosperma, N. geoasparagicola, N. mekan, N. papillata, N. variasi and N. warna. Newly validated taxa include Longinectria gen. nov., L. lagenoides, L. verticilliforme, Fusicolla gigas and Fusicolla guangxiensis. Furthermore, Fusarium rosicola is reduced to synonymy under N. brevis. Precise control of the elemental composition and distribution in bimetallic nanoparticles is of great interest for both fundamental studies and applications, e.g. in catalysis. We present a new innovative and facile synthesis strategy for the production of true solid solution Pt1-x Rh x nanoparticles. This constitutes a development of the established heat-up method, where undesired shell formation is fully suppressed, despite utilizing metal precursors with different reaction rates. The concept is demonstrated through synthesis of selected Pt1-x Rh x solid solution compositions via the polyalcohol reduction approach. In addition, we provide modified procedures, using the same surface stabilizing agent/metal precursors reaction matrix yielding controlled model Rh(core)-Pt(shell) and Pt(core)-Rh(shell) nanoparticles. Tunable bimetallic solid solution and core-shell nanoparticles with the same capping agent are of key importance in systematic fundamental studies, as functional materials properties may be altered by modifying the surface termination.

RESUMO

This work presents a new technique for the synthesis of particles satisfying the conditions of several multiphase suspensions. It consists of manufacturing PMMA_La2O3 hybrid microspheres through suspension polymerization first and then submitting the beads to neutron activation. It was found that the fractional mass of the filler La2O3 in the beads can be greater that 60% using this technique. The results and other properties of the particles clearly indicate that the technique is effective to produce particles for several RPT applications.

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of mepivacaine and lidocaine for pulpal anaesthesia and pain control when administered via an inferior alveolar nerve block during the root canal treatment of mandibular molars in patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis. A research protocol was developed and registered in PROSPERO. The systematic search was conducted during May 2017 in eight databases. The studies were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two examiners analysed the sample independently, decided the eligibility for inclusion and classified the articles according to their quality. Statistical analysis was performed with Mantel-Haenszel and I-square (I2 ) tests considering a confidence interval of 95%. The initial sample consisted of 1130 articles, out of which four were eligible. The articles were published between 1993 and 2016. For both pulpal anaesthesia and pain control, there was no significant difference between mepivacaine and lidocaine (P = 0.843, I2  = 0%, and P = 0.183, I2  = 21.1%, respectively). Mepivacaine and lidocaine were similarly effective for pulpal anaesthesia and pain control after inferior alveolar nerve blocks for root canal treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the dose-response relationship between smoking load and cardiopulmonary fitness, as measured with cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), in adult smokers free of respiratory diseases. METHODS: After a complete clinical evaluation and spirometry, 95 adult smokers (35 men and 60 women) underwent CPET on a treadmill. RESULTS: The physiological responses during CPET showed lower cardiorespiratory fitness levels, regardless of smoking load, with a peak [Formula: see text] lower than 100% of the expected value and a lower maximum heart rate. We observed a significant moderate negative correlation between smoking load and peak [Formula: see text] . The smoking load also presented a significant negative correlation with maximum heart rate(r=-0.36; p<0.05), lactate threshold(r=-0.45; p<0.05), and peak ventilation(r=-0.43; p<0.05). However, a dose-response relationship between smoking load quartiles and cardiopulmonary fitness was not found comparing quartiles of smoking loads after adjustment for age, sex and cardiovascular risk. CONCLUSION: There appears to be no dose-response relationship between SL and cardiopulmonary fitness in adult smokers with preserved pulmonary function, after adjusting the analysis for age and cardiovascular risk. Our results suggest that smoking cessation might be useful as the primary strategy to prevent cardiopulmonary fitness decline in smokers, regardless of smoking load. Thus, even a very low dose of tobacco use must be avoided in preventive strategies focusing on becoming people more physically active and fit.

The aim of the present study was to analyse the lactate threshold (LT) changes in rats submitted to an aerobic treadmill-training programme. Twenty-five Wistar rats were divided into two groups: a sedentary control group (CG), and a trained group (TG) submitted to an aerobic training during 5 weeks. All the animals were submitted to an incremental treadmill exercise test in order to determine LT. There was an increase in the maximum running speed in the TG (from 32.25 ± 1.27 to 47.75 ± 3.13 m.min-1 - p = 0.001), and running speed at LT (from 26.21 ± 1.15 to 35.30 ± 2.24 m.min-1 - p = 0.004), a part from the reduction in blood lactate at LT. LT can be determined in rats, and aerobic training induced positive oxidative physiological adaptations in the animals.

In January 2011, leaves of several daylily (Hemerocallis flava L.) plants in nurseries in Vitória da Conquista, northeastern Brazil, showed typical anthracnose symptoms. Reddish brown lesions with a yellow halo were first observed at the tip leaves. As the disease progressed, the lesions rapidly expanded down the leaves, resulting in severe blight. Small pieces up to 5 mm in diameter were removed from the lesion margins, surface sterilized for 1 min in 1.5% NaOCl, washed twice with sterile distilled water, and plated onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with 0.5 g liter-1 streptomycin sulfate. Macroscopic colony characters and microscopic morphology characteristics of two isolates were developed after growth on PDA for 7 days at 25°C under a 12-h light/dark cycle. Colonies presented effuse mycelium, initially white and becoming pale gray, with numerous black structures like sclerotia, setae, and acervuli absent in culture media. Conidia were hyaline, aseptate, curved or slightly curved, round or somewhat acute apex, base truncate, 13.4 to 22.7 (18.2 ± 2.16) µm length, and 3.2 to 5.8 (4.24 ± 0.62) µm width, length/width ratio 4.37, and were typical of Colletotrichum spp. DNA sequencing of partial sequence of actin (ACT), chitin synthase (CHS-1), and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPD) genes and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rRNA gene cluster) were conducted to accurately identify the species. Sequences of two daylily isolates were highly similar to those of C. spaethianum (Allesch.) Damm, P.F. Cannon & Crous. A phylogenetic analysis using Bayesian inference and including published ACT, CHS-1, GPDH, and ITS data for C. spaethianum and other Colletotrichum species associated with daylily anthracnose (1,3) showed that the isolated fungi belong to the C. spaethianum clade. Sequences of the isolates obtained in this study were deposited in GenBank (ACT Accession Nos. KC598114 and KC598115; CHS-1 Accession Nos. KC598116 and KC598117; GPDH Accession Nos. KC598118 and KC598119; ITS Accession Nos. KC598120 and KC598121). Cultures are deposited in the Culture Collection of Phytopathogenic Fungi of the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil (CMM1224 and CMM1225). Pathogenicity tests were conducted with the two C. spaethianum strains on daylily leaves. Mycelial plugs taken from the margin of actively growing colonies (PDA) of each isolate were applied in shallow wounds near the tip leaves. Four detached leaves were inoculated for each isolate, and PDA discs without fungal growth were used as controls. The leaves were maintained in humid chamber for 2 days at 25°C under a 12-h photoperiod. Anthracnose symptoms that closely resembled those observed in the affected nurseries were developed up to 5 days after inoculation. No symptoms developed on the control plants. C. spaethianum was successfully re-isolated from symptomatic plants to fulfill Koch's postulates. C. spaethianum was described from H. fulva and H. citrina in China, Hosta sielbodiana in Germany, and Lilium sp. in South Korea (3), and from Peucedanum praeruptorum in China (2). Papaya fruits (Carica papaya L.) (cv. Golden) showing post-harvest anthracnose symptoms were observed during surveys of papaya disease in northeastern Brazil from 2008 to 2012. Fruits affected by anthracnose showed sunken, prominent, dark brown to black lesions. Small pieces (4 to 5 mm) of necrotic tissue were surface sterilized for 1 min in 1.5% NaOCl, washed twice with sterile distilled water, and plated onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with 0.5 g liter-1 streptomycin sulfate. Macroscopic colony characters and microscopic morphology characteristics of four isolates were observed after growth on PDA (2) for 7 days at 25°C under a 12-hr light/dark cycle. Colonies varied between colorless and pale brown in reverse, with orange conidial mass. Conidia were hyaline, aseptate, cylindrical with round ends, slightly flattened, smooth-walled, guttulate, and 13.5 (10.5 to 17.1) µm × 3.8 (2.1 to 4.8) µm (l/w ratio = 3.5, n = 50), typical of Colletotrichum spp. DNA sequencing of partial sequences of actin (ACT) gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rRNA) were conducted to accurately identify the species. Sequences of the papaya isolates were 99% similar to those of Colletotrichum brevisporum (GenBank Accession Nos. JN050216, JN050217, JN050238, and JN050239). A phylogenetic analysis using Bayesian inference and including published ACT and ITS data for C. brevisporum and other Colletotrichum species was carried out (1). Based on morphological and molecular data, the papaya isolates were identified as C. brevisporum. Conidia of the papaya isolates were narrower than those described for C. brevisporum (2.9 to 4.8 µm and 5 to 6 µm, respectively) (1), which may be due to differences in incubation temperature or a typical variation in conidial size in Colletotrichum species (3). Sequences of the isolates obtained in this study are deposited in GenBank (ACT Accession Nos. KC702903, KC702904, KC702905, and KC702906; ITS Accession Nos. HM163181, HM015851, HM015854, and HM015859). Cultures are deposited in the Culture Collection of Phytopathogenic Fungi of the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil (CMM 1672, CMM 1702, CMM 1822, and CMM 2005). Pathogenicity testing was conducted with all four strains of C. brevisporum on papaya fruits (cv. Golden). Fruits were wounded at the medium region by pushing the tip of four sterile pins through the surface of the skin to a depth of 3 mm. Mycelial plugs taken from the margin of actively growing colonies (PDA) of each isolate were placed in shallow wounds. PDA discs without fungal growth were used as control. Inoculated fruits were maintained in a humid chamber for 2 days at 25°C in the dark. After 6 days, anthracnose symptoms developed that were typical of diseased fruit in the field. C. brevisporum was successfully reisolated from symptomatic fruits to fulfill Koch's postulates. C. brevisporum was described from Neoregalia sp. and Pandanus pygmaeus in Thailand (1). OBJECTIVES: To analyse demographic and clinical variables in patients with disease onset before and after 40, 45 and 50 years in a large series of Brazilian SpA patients. METHODS: A common protocol of investigation was prospectively applied to 1424 SpA patients in 29 centres distributed through the main geographical regions in Brazil. The mean age at disease onset was 28.56 ± 12.34 years, with 259 patients (18.2%) referring disease onset after 40 years, 151 (10.6%) after 45 years and 81 (5.8%) after 50 years. Clinical and demographic variables and disease indices (BASDAI, BASFI, BASRI, MASES, ASQoL) were investigated. Ankylosing spondylitis was the most frequent disease (66.3%), followed by psoriatic arthritis (18%), undifferentiated SpA (6.7%), reactive arthritis (5.5%), and enteropathic arthritis (3.5%). RESULTS: Comparing the groups according to age of disease onset, those patients with later onset presented statistical association with female gender, peripheral arthritis, dactylitis, nail involvement and psoriasis, as well as negative statistical association with inflammatory low back pain, alternating buttock pain, radiographic sacroiliitis, hip involvement, positive familial history, HLA-B27 and uveitis. BASDAI, BASFI and quality of life, as well as physicians and patient's global assessment, were similar in all the groups. Radiographic indices showed worse results in the younger age groups. CONCLUSIONS: There are two different clinical patterns in SpA defined by age at disease onset: one with predominance of axial symptoms in the group with disease onset ≤ 40 years and another favouring the peripheral manifestations in those with later disease onset.

The muscular dystrophies (MDs) are genetic disorders of muscle degeneration due to mutations in genes that encode a wide variety of proteins. Dysferlinopathy are characterized by the absence of dysferlin in skeletal muscle and an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Both histological and ultrastructural pathology have been well established in dysferlinopathy patients and dysferlin-deficient animal models. To our knowledge the effect of antioxidant supplementation on this level has not been described previously. This article therefore focuses on the histopathology to reveal the effect of antioxidant supplementation. The study aimed to determine, at cellular level, the histopathological changes in the SJL/J mouse model following a 90 day trial with antioxidant supplementation. Markedly reduced inflammatory insult in the more affected quadriceps muscles of animals treated with high doses of CoQ10 and a combination of resveratrol/CoQ10 were observed. The outcome provides evidence that high doses of antioxidant supplementation resulted in decreased dystrophic markers and enhanced tissue integrity at cellular level.

The feeding habits, the sexual dimorphism in size and sexual maturity of the actively foraging lizard Cnemidophorusocellifer were analysed in an area of a reforested Restinga habitat located in the municipality of Mataraca, along the northern-most coast of Paraíba State, Brazil. Seventy-five specimens of C. ocellifer were examined (46 males and 29A females). Of this total, only 23 specimens had prey in their stomachs. The most frequent prey consumed items were orthopterans (50%), coleopterans (23.9%) and arachnids (10.9%); termites and insect larvae were less consumed (both with 2.2%). There were no significant differences observed between the numbers of prey consumed by either males or females. There were significant differences in SVL (snout-vent length) between the sexes, with males attaining larger SVL values. When the influence of SVL was removed from the analyses, sexual dimorphism in the form was still reflected in the head size of these lizards. Sexual maturity in females and males was attained with SVL of 42.2 and 49.0 mm respectively. Although no significant difference was observed between the SVL of the females and the number of eggs produced, there was a clear tendency for larger females to produce more eggs. The low structural complexity of the vegetation and the poor soil quality in the reforested restinga area examined does not furnish favourable habitat for insect and termite larvae, contributing to the marked differences in the diet of the population of C. ocellifer observed in the present study in relation to the diet of their conspecifics in undisturbed areas of restinga, cerrado and caatinga.
