This paper aims to compare two ceramic materials available for additive manufacturing (AM) processes-vat photopolymerization (VPP) and material extrusion (MEX)-that result in fully ceramic parts after proper heat treatment. The analysis points out the most significant differences between the structural and mechanical properties and the potential application of each AM technology. The research revealed different behaviors for the specimens obtained via the two mentioned technologies. In the case of MEX, the specimens exhibited similar microstructures before and after heat treatment. The sintering process did not affect the shape of the grains, only their size. For the VPP specimens, directly after the manufacturing process, irregular grain shapes were registered, but after the sintering process, the grains fused, forming a solid structure that made it impossible to outline individual grains and measure their size. The highest compression strength was 168 MPa for the MEX specimens and 81 MPa for the VPP specimens. While the VPP specimens had half the compression strength, the results for the VPP specimens were significantly more repeatable.

This study aims to analyze the influence of the rolling process on the microstructure and corrosion properties of the Mg/Al bimetallic bars obtained by the explosive welding method. The bars investigated were rolled using two different types of rolling: classical rolling (Variant I) and modified rolling (Variant II). Two different temperatures (300 °C and 400 °C) for each of the variables were applied as well. In this study, rods with an aluminum plating layer constituting 16.8% of the cross-sectional area and an average thickness of about 0.93 mm were investigated. Based on the revealed results, it was found that after the rolling process, the material shows clearly lower values of both icor and current in the passive range. In the joint zone of Mg/Al rods rolled at 400 °C, Al3Mg2 and Mg17Al12 intermetallic phases are distinguished, localized next to the Mg core, and characterized by columnar, coarser grains. In the transition zone closer to the Al layer, only the Al3Mg2 phase is revealed, characterized by a refined, small grain size.

Pure titanium is gaining increasing interest due to its potential use in dental and orthopedic applications. Due to its relatively weak mechanical parameters, a limited number of components manufactured from pure titanium are available on the market. In order to improve the mechanical parameters of pure titanium, manufacturers use alloys containing cytotoxic vanadium and aluminum. This paper presents unique explosive hardening technology that can be used to strengthen pure titanium parameters. The analysis confirms that explosive induced α-ω martensitic transformation and crystallographic anisotropy occurred due to the explosive pressure. The mechanical properties related to residual stresses are very nonuniform. The corrosion properties of the explosive hardened pure titanium test do not change significantly compared to nonhardened titanium. The biocompatibility of all the analyzed samples was confirmed in several tests. The morphology of bone cells does not depend on the titanium surface phase composition and crystallographic orientation.

This work focuses on the production of gradient composite materials with an alumina matrix containing copper and chromium and examines the effect of the reinforcement and casting speed on the obtained microstructure. Al2O3-Cu-Cr composites with a microstructure gradient were produced via centrifugal slip casting. The research reveals that adding chromium to the Al2O3-Cu system improves the connection between the ceramic and metal particles, probably by reducing the contact angle at the interface between the ceramic and metallic phases during sintering. Additionally, it was found that higher casting speed was conducive to obtaining a better connection at the interface of ceramics and metal.

The scientific goal of this paper is to study and explain the relationship between the microstructure of a ceramic-intermetallic composite fabricated by consolidating a mixture of Al2O3 and NiAl-Al2O3 using the PPS technique and its basic mechanical properties. Six series of composites were manufactured. The obtained samples differed in the sintering temperature and content of compo-powder. The base powders, compo-powder, and composites were investigated using SEM equipped with an EDS and XRD. Hardness tests and KIC measurements were applied to estimate the mechanical properties of the fabricated composites. The wear resistance was evaluated using a "ball-on-disc" method. The results demonstrate that the density of the obtained composites increases with the increased temperature of the sintering. The content of NiAl + 20 wt.% Al2O3 did not have a determining effect on the hardness of the manufactured composites. The highest hardness, contacting 20.9 ± 0.8 GPa, was found for the composite series sintered at 1300 °C and 2.5 vol.% of compo-powder. The highest KIC value from all the studied series equaled 8.13 ± 0.55 MPa·m0.5 and was also achieved for the series manufactured at 1300 °C (2.5 vol.% of compo-powder). The average friction coefficient during the ball-friction test with the Si3N4 ceramic counter-sample was between 0.8 and 0.95.

In this investigation, three different explosive materials have been used to improve the properties of titanium grade 2: ammonal, emulsion explosives, and plastic-bonded explosives. In order to establish the influence of explosive hardening on the properties of the treated alloys, tests were conducted, including microhardness testing, microstructure analysis, and tensile and corrosion tests. It has been found that it is possible to achieve a 40% increase in tensile strength using a plastic explosive (PBX) as an explosive material. On the other hand, the impact of the shock wave slightly decreased the corrosion resistance of titanium grade 2. The change in corrosion rate is less than 0.1µm/year, which does not significantly affect the overall corrosion resistance of the material. The reduction in corrosion resistance is probably due to the surface geometry changes as a result of explosive treatment.

With the development and popularization of additive manufacturing, attempts have been made to implement this technology into the production processes of machine parts, including gears. In the case of the additive manufacturing of gears, the availability of dedicated materials for this type of application is low. This paper summarizes the results of research on the implementation of 21NiCrMo2 low-alloy steel, which is conventionally used to produce gears as a feedstock in the PBF-LB/M process. The work presents research on the selection of process parameters based on porosity measurements, static tensile tests, and hardness measurements. In addition, the article includes a mathematical model based on the quadratic regression model, which allows the estimation of the percentage of voids in the material depending on the assumed values of independent variables (laser power, scanning velocity, and hatch distance). The paper includes a range of process parameters that enable the production of elements made of 21NiCrMo2 steel with a density of over 99.7%. Additionally, comparative tests were carried out on PBF-LB/M-manufactured steel (in the state after printing and the state after heat treatment) and conventionally manufactured steel in terms of its mechanical and microstructural properties. The results showed that the steel exhibited similar mechanical properties to other carburizing steels (20MnCr5 and 16MnCr5) that have been used to date in PBF-LB/M processes and it can be used as an alternative to these materials.

The aim of this investigation was to identify the effect of rolling at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions on selected properties and the microstructure of the AA2519-T62 aluminum alloy. The rolling processes were conducted with different variants of asymmetry (1.0-symmetry rolling; 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6). The investigation of the obtained samples involves microhardness distribution, microstrains, and microstructure observations using light and transmission electron microscopes. Both rolling at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions increased the micro-hardness of AA2519-T62 by at least 10%. The highest reported increase (25%) was obtained for the sample rolled at room temperature in the symmetry rolling process. The samples rolled under cryogenic conditions are characterized by a lower increase in microhardness than samples rolled at room temperature and by significantly lower values of microstrains. The application of rolling with the asymmetry ratio remaining within the range of 1.2-16 only slightly affected the microhardness values of the samples rolled at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions with respect to conventional symmetrical rolling.

This work analyzed ceramic-metal composites from the Al2O3/Ti/Ni system produced by the slip casting method. As starting powders, nanometric Al2O3, Ni and Ti of submicron size were used. Three series of composites were obtained and tested with the same solid phase content (50% vol.) and different metallic phase content: 5, 10 and 15% vol. The influence of the metallic phase content on the basic properties of the proposed composites was examined by determining the phase composition of the produced samples using the XRD method, rheological measurements, and microstructural analysis (SEM/EDS). Additionally, before the sintering process, the slip stability was analyzed. A study of the fractography of samples after the sintering process was also carried out. It was shown that the appropriate manufacturing process allowed to obtain NiTi intermetallic phases in the structure of composites.

The aim of this study was to examine the mechanical properties of 5-mm-thick AA7075-T651 alloy using three different welding velocities, 50, 75 and 100 mm/min, and four various sets of tool rotation speeds: 400, 600, 800 and 1000 rpm. All obtained joints were defect-free. In all cases, the values of UTS exceeded 400 MPa, corresponding to 68.5% minimum joint efficiency. The highest value of 447.7 MPa (76.7% joint efficiency) was reported for the joint produced via 400 rpm tool rotation speed and 100 mm/min welding velocity. The SZ microstructure of the strongest joint was characterized by a 5.2 ± 1.7 µm grain size and microhardness of approximately 145 HV0.1. The TMAZ/HAZ interface was identified as the low-hardness zone (105-115 HV0.1, depending on parameters), where the failure of the tensile samples takes place. The fracture mechanism is dominated by a transgranular ductile rupture with microvoid coalescence.

The significant growth of Additive Manufacturing (AM), visible over the last ten years, has driven an increase in demand for small gradation metallic powders of a size lower than 100 µm. Until now, most affordable powders for AM have been produced using gas atomization. Recently, a new, alternative method of powder production based on ultrasonic atomization with melting by electric arc has appeared. This paper summarizes the preliminary research results of AM samples made of two AISI 316L steel powder batches, one of which was obtained during Ultrasonic Atomization (UA) and the other during Plasma Arc Gas Atomization (PAGA). The comparison starts from powder particle statistical distribution, chemical composition analysis, density, and flowability measurements. After powder analysis, test samples were produced using AM to observe the differences in microstructure, porosity, and hardness. Finally, the test campaign covered an analysis of mechanical properties, including tensile testing with Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and Charpy's impact tests. A comparative study of parts made of ultrasonic and gas atomization powders confirms the likelihood that both methods can deliver material of similar properties.

This work aimed to characterize Al2O3 matrix composites fabricated by the slip casting method using NiAl-Al2O3 composite powder as the initial powder. The composite powder, consisting of NiAl + 30 wt.% Al2O3, was obtained by mechanical alloying of Al2O3, Al, and Ni powders. The composite powder was added to the Al2O3 powder to prepare the final powder for the slip casting method. The stained composite samples presented high density. EDX and XRD analyses showed that the sintering process of the samples in an air atmosphere caused the formation of the NiAl2O4 spinel phase. Finally, the phase composition of the composites changed from the initial phases of Al2O3 and NiAl to Al2O3, Ni, and NiAl2O4. However, in the area of Ni, fine Al2O3 particles remaining from the initial composite powder were visible. It can be concluded that after slip casting, after starting with Al2O3 and the composite powder (NiAl-Al2O3) and upon sintering in air, ceramic matrix composites with Ni and NiAl2O4 phases, complex structures, high-quality sintered samples, and favorable mechanical properties were obtained.

This study's main goal was to obtain and characterize Al2O3-Cu-Ni composites with different metallic phase content. The study analyzed the three series of samples differing in the metallic phase 5, 10, 15 vol.% volume contents. An identical volume share of the metallic components in the metallic phase was used. Ceramic-metal composites were formed using uniaxial pressing and sintered at a temperature of 1400 °C. The microstructural investigation of the Al2O3-Cu-Ni composite and its properties involved scanning electron microscopes observations and X-ray diffraction. The size of the metallic phase in the ceramic matrix was performed using a stereological analysis. Microhardness analysis with fracture toughness measures was applied to estimate the mechanical properties of the prepared materials. Additionally, magnetic measurements were carried out, and the saturation magnetization was determined on the obtained magnetic hysteresis loops. The prepared samples, regardless of the content of the metallic phase in each series, were characterized by a density exceeding 95% of the theoretical density. The magnetic measurements exhibited that the fabricated composites had ferromagnetic properties due to nickel and nickel-rich phases. The hardness of the samples containing 5, 10, 15 vol.% metallic phases decreased with an increase in the metallic phase content, equal to 17.60 ± 0.96 GPa, 15.40 ± 0.81 GPa, 12.6 ± 0.36 GPa, respectively.

The paper presents the theoretical and experimental research conducted to date regarding the possibility of obtaining round bars from AZ31 magnesium alloy with a bimodal structure rolled in the radial shear rolling process (RSR) technology. There is no analysis of the impact of the deformation path (distribution of deformation in individual passes) on the mechanical properties and the obtained bar structure. The feedstock, namely, AZ31 magnesium alloy round bars with a diameter of 30 mm, were rolled in RSR to the final diameter of 15 mm with different levels of deformation in successive passes, at a temperature of 400 °C. The bars obtained as a result of the RSR rolling process have different hardness on the cross-section as well as a characteristic gradient grain size distribution. Based on the conducted research, it can be concluded that the use of a larger number of passes with a smaller cross-section reduction will result in an improved formation of a bimodal structure consisting of a highly fragmented near-surface structure and in the half of the radius of the structure of fragmented grains at the boundaries of larger grains.

NiAl-Al2O3 composites, fabricated from the prepared composite powders by mechanical alloying and then consolidated by pulse plasma sintering, were presented. The use of nanometric alumina powder for reinforcement of a synthetized intermetallic matrix was the innovative concept of this work. Moreover, this is the first reported attempt to use the Pulse Plasma Sintering (PPS) method to consolidate composite powder with the contribution of nanometric alumina powder. The composite powders consisting of the intermetallic phase NiAl and Al2O3 were prepared by mechanical alloying from powder mixtures containing Ni-50at.%Al with the contribution of 10 wt.% or 20 wt.% nanometric aluminum oxide. A nanocrystalline NiAl matrix was formed, with uniformly distributed Al2O3 inclusions as reinforcement. The PPS method successfully consolidated NiAl-Al2O3 composite powders with limited grain growth in the NiAl matrix. The appropriate sintering temperature for composite powder was selected based on analysis of the grain growth and hardness of Al2O3 subjected to PPS consolidation at various temperatures. As a result of these tests, sintering of the NiAl-Al2O3 powders was carried out at temperatures of 1200 °C, 1300 °C, and 1400 °C. The microstructure and properties of the initial powders, composite powders, and consolidated bulk composite materials were characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD, density, and hardness measurements. The hardness of the ultrafine-grained NiAl-Al2O3 composites obtained via PPS depends on the Al2O3 content in the composite, as well as the sintering temperature applied. The highest values of the hardness of the composites were obtained after sintering at the lowest temperature (1200 °C), reaching 7.2 ± 0.29 GPa and 8.4 ± 0.07 GPa for 10 wt.% Al2O3 and 20 wt.% Al2O3, respectively, and exceeding the hardness values reported in the literature. From a technological point of view, the possibility to use sintering temperatures as low as 1200 °C is crucial for the production of fully dense, ultrafine-grained composites with high hardness.

This paper aims to study the Al2O3/Ti ceramic-metal composite obtained by the slip casting method. Samples containing 50% volume of the solid phase, including 10% volume of the metallic phase, were investigated. The rheological properties were analyzed. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed. The properties of the obtained composite determined the phase composition using and SEM/EDS microstructural analysis and the XRD method. The size of the titanium particles equals 20.6 ± 10.1 mm, which corresponds to 27.5% of the initial size and indicates significant fragmentation of the titanium powder during the manufacturing of the composite. The relative density of the fabricated composites was equal to 99%. The slip casting method allows to obtain the proposed composite additionally enhanced by the presence of TiO2 and Al2TiO5 (thialite). Research results revealed a non-Newtonian character of the composite suspension flow with clear thinning under the influence of increasing shear forces. The obtained composites are characterized by the lack of visible defects (cracks, microcracks and delamination) on the surface.

This paper focuses on the verifying the possibility of producing Al2O3-ZrO2 composite pipes with a gradient structure using centrifugal slip casting method. The aim of the research is to define the correlation between the rheological properties of aqueous suspensions of ceramic powders with different solid loading and obtaining the ZrO2 phase gradient in the Al2O3 matrix. Such products, due to their unique properties, can be utilized in the transport of aggressive substances, even in extreme temperature or corrosive conditions. The suspensions and the sintered samples were characterized by: broad rheological analysis, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, stereological analysis and Vickers hardness tests. The study reports on a series of samples produced of ceramic suspensions (70 vol.% Al2O3-30 vol.% ZrO2) differing in the total solid loading in the range of 30-55 vol.%. The results clearly indicate that obtaining the gradient structure of ceramic-ceramic composite pipes is closely related to the rheological properties of the suspensions from which the samples are cast. The phase gradient is obtainable from suspensions 30-40 vol.%, in which the possibility of moving ZrO2 particles relative to the Al2O3 is quite high-these suspensions are characterized by low viscosity and the dominance of viscous over elastic properties (G' > G″).

The paper presents the results of experimental tests of the rolling process of Mg/Al bimetallic bars in two systems of classic passes (horizontal oval-circle-horizontal oval-circle variant I) and modified (multi-radial horizontal oval-multi-radial vertical oval-multi-radial horizontal oval-circle-variant II). The feedstock in the form of round bimetallic bars with a diameter of 22 mm and 30% of the outer aluminum layer was made through explosive welding. The bimetallic bars consisted of an AZ31 magnesium core and a 1050A aluminum outer layer. Bars with a diameter of 17 mm were obtained as a result of rolling in four passes. The rolling process in the passes was conducted at two temperatures of 300 and 400 °C. Based on the analysis of the test results, it was found that the use of modified passes and a lower rolling temperature (300 °C) ensures a more homogenous distribution of the plating layer around the circumference of the core and results in an even grain decreasing, which improves the corrosion resistance of bimetallic bars compared to rolling bars in a classic system of passes and at a higher temperature (400 °C).

In this study, the influence of different fire conditions on tempered 32CrB3 steel bolts of Grade 8.8 was investigated. In this research different temperatures, heating time, and cooling methods were correlated with the microstructure, hardness, and residual strength of the bolts. Chosen parameters of heat treatments correspond to simulated natural fire conditions that may occur in public facilities. Heat treated and unheated samples cut out from a series of tested bolts were subjected to microstructural tests using light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), XRD phase analysis, and the quantitative analysis of the microstructure. The results of the microstructure tests were compared with the results of strength tests, including hardness and the ultimate residual tensile strength of the material (UTS) in the initial state and after the heat treatments. Results of the investigations revealed considerable microstructural changes in the bolt material as a result of exposing it to different fire conditions and cooling methods. A conducted comparative analysis also showed a significant effect of all such factors as the temperature level of the simulated fire, its duration, and the fire-fighting method on the mechanical properties of the bolts.

This work focuses on research on obtaining and characterizing Al2O3/ZrO2 materials formed via slip casting method. The main emphasis in the research was placed on environmental aspects and those related to the practical use of ceramic materials. The goal was to analyze the environmental loads associated with the manufacturing of Al2O3/ZrO2 composites, as well as to determine the coefficient of thermal expansion of the obtained materials, classified as technical ceramics. This parameter is crucial in terms of their practical applications in high-temperature working conditions, e.g., as parts of industrial machines. The study reports on the four series of Al2O3/ZrO2 materials differing in the volume content of ZrO2. The sintering process was preceded by thermogravimetric measurements. The fabricated and sintered materials were characterized by dilatometric study, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and stereological analysis. Further, life cycle assessment was supplied. Based on dilatometric tests, it was observed that Al2O3/ZrO2 composites show a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than that resulting from the content of individual phases. The results of the life cycle analysis showed that the environmental loads (carbon footprint) resulting from the acquisition and processing of raw materials necessary for the production of sinters from Al2O3 and ZrO2 are comparable to those associated with the production of plastic products such as polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride.
