RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the effects of in-season sprint training vs. Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) training on risk factors for hamstring strain injuries (HSI). METHODS: Eighteen male university football players (20.9±2.5 years; 181±7 cm; 75.8±9.1 kg; 15.2±3.5% of body fat) were randomly allocated to a sprint group or NHE group. They completed baseline isokinetic strength and sprint mechanics assessments prior to their assigned intervention performed twice weekly for 4-weeks, before post-testing. A mixed design ANOVA with repeated measures assessed time, group and interaction effects for all risk factors. RESULTS: There were significant increases in hamstring eccentric peak torque at 60°·s-1 (+8% - 9.9%), the torque produced at 20° (+15%) and 10° (+21% - 31%), as well as a rightward shift in angle of peak torque towards knee extension (-27% - -36%) in both groups (P<0.05). We also observed a significant increase (+24.5%) in hamstring eccentric peak torque at 180°·s-1 in the strength group only and significant improvements (+29.4%) in the rate of torque development of the dominant leg at 60°·s-1 in the sprint group only (P<0.05). No significant effect was noted on sprint performance or sprint mechanics (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that both training programs can be effective to mitigate the risk of HSI, but through different mechanisms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is critical that junior residents be given opportunities to practise bowel anastomosis before performing the procedure in patients. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an affordable way to provide realistic, reusable intestinal simulators. The aim of this study was to test the face and content validity of a 3D-printed simulator for bowel anastomosis. METHODS: The bowel anastomosis simulator was designed and assembled with the use of desktop 3D printers and silicone solutions. The production cost ranges from $2.67 to $131, depending on which aspects of the model one prefers to include. We incorporated input from a general surgeon regarding design modifications to improve the realism of the model. Nine experts in general surgery (6 staff surgeons and 3 senior residents) were asked to perform an anastomosis with the model and then complete 2 surveys regarding face and content validity. Items were rated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 ("strongly disagree") to 5 ("strongly agree"). RESULTS: The overall average score for product quality was 3.58, indicating good face validity. The average score for realism (e.g., flexibility and texture of the model) was 3.77. The simulator was rated as being useful for training, with an overall average score of 3.98. In general, the participants agreed that the simulator would be a valuable addition to current simulation-based medical education (average score 4.11). They commented that the model would be improved by adding extra layers to simulate mucosa. CONCLUSION: Experts found the 3D-printed bowel anastomosis simulator to be an appropriate tool for the education of surgical residents, based on the model's texture, appearance and ability to undergo an anastomosis. This model provides an affordable way for surgical residents to learn bowel anastomosis. Future research will focus on proving educational efficacy, effectiveness and transfer that can be adapted for laparoscopic anastomosis training, hand-sewing and stapling procedures.

RESUMO

This article critically analyses the recent High Court decision in Tabet v Gett (2010) 84 ALJR 292; [2010] HCA 12 which considered whether a person should be able to obtain compensation on the basis of a loss of a chance of a better medical outcome. The appellant argued that the High Court should regard a plaintiff as entitled to compensation when a breach by a defendant of their duty of care causes the plaintiff to lose a possibility, but not a probability, of a better medical outcome. The High Court held that it was not possible for a person in the position of the appellant to obtain compensation for the loss of a chance of a better medical outcome.

RESUMO

This paper seeks to shed further light on the factors contributing to the emerging global food crisis by examining the reasons for an unusual downturn in dairy food production in Australia, from where 11% of the world trade in dairy foods originates.

RESUMO

The advent of multiple global crises, especially those of climate change, economics, energy, water, food and health evident in 2008, is of considerable moment to those who are suffering their consequences and for those with responsibility and interest in the systems affected. A coalition of parties in the Asia Pacific Region who work in the food and health systems met in August, 2009 in Taiwan and instigated a Food in Health Security (FIHS) Network which might join with other like-minded networks in and beyond the region. Sustainable health has many dimensions, among which food and nutrition is often neglected; there is a wide spectrum of nutritionally-related disorders. Malnutrition remains the global concern for agricultural research and development scientists and linkage with the health sector is key to progress. The disconnect between agricultural and health sectors negatively impacts consumer nutrition and health. Ethical and equity affect food and health systems. Food and health security is attainable only when the underlying social inequities are addressed; it is an ethical issue as reflected in the UN Universal declaration of Human Rights which includes the right to food for health and well-being. Food and health security are part of the larger security agenda and merit corresponding attention. Policy recommendations with immediacy are greater investment in combined food and health research; an Asia Pacific security agenda which emphasizes planetary, human, health and food security as relevant to traditional defence security; and community and household security measures which include maternal literacy, communication technology and entrepreneurial opportunity.

RESUMO

Heterozygosity in diploid eukaryotes often makes genetic studies cumbersome. Methods that produce viable homozygous diploid offspring directly from heterozygous females allow F1 mutagenized females to be screened directly for deleterious mutations in an accelerated forward genetic screen. Streisinger et al. described methods for making gynogenetic (homozygous) diploid zebrafish by activating zebrafish eggs with ultraviolet light-inactivated sperm and preventing either the second meiotic or the first zygotic cell division using physical treatments (heat or pressure) that deploymerize microtubules. The "early pressure" (EP) method blocks the meiosis II, which occurs shortly after fertilization. The EP method produces a high percentage of viable embryos that can develop to fertile adults of either sex. The method generates embryos that are homozygous at all loci except those that were separated from their centromere by recombination during meiosis I. Homozygous mutations are detected in EP clutches at between 50% for centromeric loci and less than 1% for telomeric loci. This method is reproduced verbatim from the Zebrafish Book.

RESUMO

This paper discusses the significance of the food industry for the Zhejiang provincial economy and for provincial economies generally. It is suggested that the strong ties between the food industry and provincial economies in China means that the food industry can be a key influence in the economic development of regional China. Moreover, the geographically diffuse nature of the food industry in China gives the industry a strategic significance in countering regional inequality within and between provinces, a by-product of China's rapid growth over the past 25 years. For these reasons, change in the food industry, whether it has its origins in the introduction of western fast foods, or in environmental, technological or economic trends, not only assumes significance for the health of the Chinese people (as other papers presented to the International Cuisine and Health Workshop at Hangzhou have pointed out), but also for the wealth of the nation and the way that wealth is distributed.
