RESUMO

In this study, a really simple and efficient catalytic protocol for the construction of quinazolines from alcohol and diamine has been developed based on CuCoAl layered double hydroxide (CuCoAl-LDH). The developed CuCoAl-LDH catalyst could accelerate the cascade reactions without any additives and tolerate various alcohols with satisfactory yields. Cooperation between the Cu+ and Cu2+ species in CuCoAl-LDH was observed in the cascade reaction, and they are believed to be responsible for the oxidation of alcohol and dehydrogenation of the intermediate, respectively. The promoting effect of the substrate diamine was observed in the oxidation of alcohol, which simplifies the reaction system by eliminating the requirement for a base additive. The catalytic system exhibited highly practical potential for the synthesis of quinazolines, as demonstrated through recyclability investigations and scale-up experiments. A possible catalytic mechanism has been proposed based on a series of control experiments and EPR analysis.

RESUMO

Keshan disease (KD) is a type of endemic cardiomyopathy with an unknown cause. It is primarily found in areas in China with low selenium levels, from northeast to southwest. The nutritional biogeochemical etiology hypothesis suggests that selenium deficiency is a major factor in KD development. Selenium is important in removing free radicals and protecting cells and tissues from peroxide-induced damage. Thus, low environmental selenium may affect the selenium level within the human body, and selenium level differences are commonly observed between healthy people in KD and nonKD areas. From the 1970s to the 1990s, China successfully reduced KD incidence in endemic KD areas through a selenium supplementation program. After years of implementing prevention and control measures, the selenium level of the population in the KD areas has gradually increased, and the prevalence of KD in China has remained low and stable in recent years. Currently, the pathogenesis of KD remains vague, and the effect of selenium supplementation on the prognosis of KD still needs further study. This paper comprehensively reviews selenium deficiency and its connection to KD. Thus, this study aims to offer novel ideas and directions to effectively prevent and treat KD in light of the current situation.

RESUMO

Rapid, sensitive, and accurate identification of pathogens is vital for preventing and controlling fish disease, reducing economic losses in aquaculture, and interrupting the spread of food-borne diseases in human populations. Herein, we proposed a hybridization chain reaction (HCR) cascaded dual-signal amplification platform for the ultrasensitive and specific detection of pathogenic microorganisms. A couple of specific primers for target bacterial 16S rRNAs were used to obtain amplified target single-stranded DNAs (AT-ssDNA). Then, AT-ssDNA initiated HCR amplification along with the opening of fluorophore (FAM) and a quencher (BHQ1) labeled hairpin reporter probe (H1), and the FAM fluorescence signal recovered. The proposed strategy could achieve a detection limit down to 0.31 CFU/mL for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), 0.49 CFU/mL for Escherichia coli (E. coli) in buffer, and a linear range from 1 to 1 × 106 CFU/mL for S. aureus, 1 to 1 × 107 CFU/mL for E. coli. Furthermore, this platform enabled sensitive and precise detection of pathogenic microorganisms in complex samples such as fish blood and different organ tissues (large intestine, gallbladder, heart, liver, ren, gill, skin), which shows great potential in disease prevention and control in aquatic products.

RESUMO

Background: Hypertension is a major public health concern that strongly influences the quality of life of people worldwide. Keshan disease (KD) is an endemic cardiomyopathy related to low selenium, threatening residents in rural areas of 16 provinces in China. Furthermore, the prevalence of hypertension in the KD-endemic areas has been increasing annually. However, hypertension research associated with KD has only focused on endemic regions, and no studies have compared hypertension prevalence between endemic and non-endemic areas. Therefore, this study investigated the prevalence of hypertension to provide a basis for preventing and controlling hypertension in the KD-endemic areas, even in rural areas. Methods: We extracted blood pressure information from cardiomyopathy investigation data from a cross-sectional study of the KD-endemic and non-endemic areas. The hypertension prevalence between the two groups was compared using the Chi-square test or Fisher s exact test. Additionally, Pearson's correlation coefficient was employed to evaluate the relationship between the per capita gross domestic product (GDP) and hypertension prevalence. Results: There was a statistically significant increase of hypertension prevalence in the KD-endemic areas (22.79%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 22.30-23.27%) over the non-endemic areas (21.55%, 95% CI: 21.09-22.02%). In the KD-endemic areas, more men had hypertension than women (23.90% vs. 21.65%, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the hypertension prevalence was higher in the north than in the south in the KD-endemic areas (27.52% vs. 18.76%, P < 0.001), non-endemic areas (24.86% vs. 18.66%, P < 0.001), and overall (26.17% vs. 18.68%, P < 0.001). Finally, the prevalence of hypertension positively correlated with per capita GDP at province level. Conclusions: The increasing hypertension prevalence is a public health problem in the KD-endemic areas. Healthy diets, such as high consumption of vegetables and seafoods, and foods that are rich in selenium, might help prevent and control hypertension in the KD-endemic areas and other rural areas in China.

RESUMO

A convenient catalytic protocol for efficiently constructing indoline-fused tetrahydroisoquinolines based on CuCoFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) has been described. Preliminary mechanistic studies show that indoline-fused tetrahydroisoquinolines are produced via domino coupling/cyclization reactions between tetrahydroisoquinolines and active methylene compounds, including malononitrile, malonates, and analogues. CuCoFe-LDH can accelerate the Csp3-Csp3 and Csp3-Csp2 formation reactions in a single step. The research thus presents a unique opportunity to develop a synthetic methodology for N-containing polycyclic compounds.

RESUMO

In addition to naturally occurring arsenic, man-made arsenic-based compounds are other sources of arsenic exposure. In 2013, our group identified 12 suspected arsenicosis patients in a household (32 living members). Of them, eight members were diagnosed with skin cancer. Interestingly, all of these patients had lived in the household prior to 1989. An investigation revealed that approximately 2 tons of arsenic-based pesticides had been previously placed near a well that had supplied drinking water to the family from 1973 to 1989. The current arsenic level in the well water was 620 µg/L. No other high arsenic wells were found near the family's residence. Based on these findings, it is possible to infer that the skin lesions exhibited by these family members were caused by long-term exposure to well water contaminated with arsenic-based pesticides. Additionally, biochemical analysis showed that the individuals exposed to arsenic had higher levels of aspartate aminotransferase and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase than those who were not exposed. These findings might indicate the presence of liver dysfunction in the arsenic-exposed individuals. This report elucidates the effects of arsenical compounds on the occurrence of high levels of arsenic in the environment and emphasizes the severe human health impact of arsenic exposure.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In order to understand the iodine nutritional status, after the salt-iodine content was showed a reduction in 2012 and to evaluate the current situation after the new standards was brought into force to the general population in an experimental community of Yunnan province. METHODS: Randomly sampled urine and salt were collected, to test the iodine concentration in the study-site. Pre-and post-levels of the iodized salt under the provision of the new standards, were identified. RESULTS: of this study were gathered upon 3 weeks or 3 months, respectively. Results Data from the three randomly chosen study sites showed that the urine iodine concentration in the general populations was reducing gradually. In the general population, medians of Urine Iodine (MUI) were 279.71 µg/L, 239.64 µg/L and 226.26 µg/L, respectively. Proportion of the urine iodine value for 100-199 µg/L increased but ≥300 µg/L decreased, after the new standard was put into practice. Both homogeneity and stability of the new standard on iodized salt seemed to be good. CONCLUSION: Iodine nutrition in general population appeared reasonable under the use of newly set salt-iodine standards in general population living in Yunnan province.

RESUMO

Nontransition metal-catalyzed synthesis of 2-aryl benzothiazoles was achieved through K(2)S(2)O(8)-mediated oxidative condensation of benzothiazoles with aryl aldehydes. The same transformation can also be effected when the aryl aldehydes were replaced with phenylglyoxylic acids.
