RESUMO

In this paper, a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect for refractive index (RI) detection is proposed. We design a D-shaped polished PCF structure consisting of air holes arranged in a hexagonal lattice. The silver film is coated on the middle channel of the polished surface of the PCF. The finite element method is used to analyze the propagation characteristics of the proposed D-shaped SPR-PCF sensor. Simulation results show that the proposed D-shaped SPR-PCF sensor has a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 30,000 nm/RIU, an average wavelength sensitivity of 6785.71 nm/RIU, and a maximum resolution of 3.33×10-6 R I U in the RI range of 1.22-1.36. Owing to the high wavelength sensitivity in the considered RI range, the proposed D-shaped SPR-PCF sensor is suitable for applications in water contamination detection, liquid concentration measurement, food safety monitoring, etc.

RESUMO

A holographic function screen (HFS) can recompose the wavefront and re-modulate the light-field distribution from a three-dimensional (3D) light field display (LFD) system. However, the spread function of existing HFSs does not particularly suit integral imaging (II) 3D LFD systems, which causes crosstalk and reduces the sharpness of reconstructed 3D images. An optimized holographic function screen with a flat-top rectangular spread function (FRSF) was designed for an II 3D LFD system. A simulation was carried out through ray tracing, which verified that the proposed diffusion function could suppress crosstalk and improve the overall effect.

RESUMO

Accurate, fast, and reliable modeling and optimization methods play a crucial role in designing light field display (LFD) system. Here, an automatic co-design method of LFD system based on simulated annealing and visual simulation is proposed. The process of LFD content acquisition and optical reconstruction are modeled and simulated, the objective function for evaluating the display effect of the LFD system is established according to the simulation results. In case of maximum objective function, the simulated annealing optimization method is used to find the optimal parameters of the LFD system. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed through optical experiments.

RESUMO

In this paper, a surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor is proposed for simultaneously measuring the refractive index (RI) and temperature. In the design, the central air hole and external surface of the proposed PCF are coated with gold films, and an air hole is filled with the temperature-sensitive material (TSM). By introducing the inner and outer gold films and TSM, the RI and temperature can be measured simultaneously at different wavelength regions. The simulation results show that the average wavelength sensitivities of the proposed SPR-based PCF sensor can reach 4520 nm/RIU and 4.83 nm/°C in the RI range of 1.35~1.40 and a temperature range of 20~60 °C, respectively. Moreover, because of using the different wavelength regions for sensing, the RI and temperature detections of the proposed SPR-based PCF sensor can be achieved independently. It is believed that the proposed SPR-based PCF RI and temperature sensor has important applications in biomedicine and in environmental science.

RESUMO

In this paper, a reverse-strip AlGaAs waveguide with three zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs) is designed. The corresponding three ZDWs are located at 3.74, 6.56, and 8.89 µm. The nonlinearity coefficient of the proposed reverse-strip AlGaAs waveguide is calculated as 2.09W-1m-1 at wavelength 4.9 µm. The effects of pump pulse parameters, waveguide length, and noise coefficient on the nonlinear dynamics of supercontinuum (SC) generation are investigated. When the hyperbolic secant pump pulse with a wavelength of 4.9 µm, peak power of 900 W, and duration of 100 fs is launched into the proposed waveguide and propagated after a 3 mm length, highly coherent and multi-octave mid-infrared (MIR) SC spanning from 2.2 to 14.5 µm (more than 2.7 octaves, at -40dB level) is generated. Finally, a possible fabrication process of the reverse-strip AlGaAs waveguide is introduced. Our research results have important applications in MIR photonics, MIR spectroscopy, optical precision measurement, and more.

RESUMO

In this paper, a novel gold film-coated V-shape dual-core photonic crystal fiber (V-DC-PCF) polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on surface plasmon resonance effect is proposed. The coupling lengths of the X-polarization (X-pol) and Y-polarization (Y-pol) and the corresponding coupling length ratio of the proposed V-DC-PCF PBS without gold film and with gold film are compared. The fiber structure parameters and thickness of the gold film are optimized through investigating their effects on the coupling lengths and coupling length ratio. As the propagation length increases, the normalized output powers of the X-pol and Y-pol of the proposed V-DC-PCF PBS at the three wavelengths 1.610, 1.631, and 1.650 µm are demonstrated. The relationships between the extinction ratio (ER), insertion loss (IL) and wavelength for the three splitting lengths (SLs) 188, 185, and 182 µm are investigated. Finally, it is demonstrated that for the proposed V-DC-PCF PBS, the optimal SL is 188 µm, the ILs of the X-pol and Y-pol are less than 0.22 dB, and the splitting bandwidth (SB) can cover the E + S + C + L + U band. The proposed V-DC-PCF PBS has the ultra-short SL, ultra-wide SB, and ultra-low IL, so it is expected to have important applications in the laser, sensing, and dense wavelength division multiplexing systems.

RESUMO

In this paper, a hollow-core negative curvature fiber (HC-NCF) with high birefringence is proposed for low refractive index (RI) sensing based on surface plasmon resonance effect. In the design, the cladding region of the HC-NCF is composed of only one ring of eight silica tubes, and two of them are selectively filled with the gold wires. The influences of the gold wires-filled HC-NCF structure parameters on the propagation characteristic are investigated by the finite element method. Moreover, the sensing performances in the low RI range of 1.20-1.34 are evaluated by the traditional confinement loss method and novel birefringence analysis method, respectively. The simulation results show that for the confinement loss method, the obtained maximum sensitivity, resolution, and figure of merit of the gold wires-filled HC-NCF-based sensor are -5700 nm/RIU, 2.63 × 10-5 RIU, and 317 RIU-1, respectively. For the birefringence analysis method, the obtained maximum sensitivity, resolution, and birefringence of the gold wires-filled HC-NCF-based sensor are -6100 nm/RIU, 2.56 × 10-5 RIU, and 1.72 × 10-3, respectively. It is believed that the proposed gold wires-filled HC-NCF-based low RI sensor has important applications in the fields of biochemistry and medicine.

RESUMO

In this paper, a temperature self-compensated refractive index sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and the ellipsoid structure is demonstrated. The ellipsoid can excite the cladding modes and recouple them into the fiber core. Two well-defined wavelength bands are observed in the reflection spectrum of the proposed sensor, i.e., the Bragg resonant peak and the cladding resonant peaks. By measuring the wavelength shift of the cladding resonant peak, the surrounding refractive index (SRI) can be determined, and the wavelength shift of the Bragg resonant peak can be used as a reliable reference to self-compensate the temperature variation (temperature sensitivity of 10.76 pm/°C). When the SRI changes from 1.3352 to 1.3722, the cladding resonant peak redshifts linearly with an average sensitivity of 352.6 pm/RIU (refractive index unit). When the SRI changes from 1.3722 to 1.4426, an exponential redshift is observed with a maximum sensitivity of 4182.2 pm/RIU. Especially, the sensing performance is not very reliant on the distance between the FBG and the ellipsoid, greatly improving the ease of the fabrication.

RESUMO

In this paper, we numerically investigate the mid-infrared supercontinuum (SC) generation in a suspended ${{\rm As}_2}{{\rm Se}_3}$As2Se3 ridge waveguide, which is designed with the two zero-dispersion wavelengths. Simulation results show that when the pump pulses at wavelength 3.3 µm with width of 100 fs and peak power of 900 W are launched into the anomalous dispersion region of the designed waveguide with a length of 0.87 mm, the SC can be generated in the wavelength range from 1.76 to 14.42 µm (more than three octaves), extending deep into the "fingerprint" region. The stability of the generated SC is confirmed by the first-order coherence. Moreover, we demonstrate the performance of the SC-based frequency comb by assuming a 50 pulse pump source at a repetition rate of 100 MHz.

RESUMO

A method for the viewing angle and viewing resolution enhancement of integral imaging (InIm) based on time-multiplexed lens stitching is demonstrated using the directional time-sequential backlight (DTS-BL) and the compound lens-array. In order to increase the lens-pitch of the compound lens-array for enlarging the viewing angle of InIm, DTS-BL is used to continuously stitch the adjacent elemental lenses in the time-multiplexed way. Through the compound lens-array with two pieces of lens in each lens unit, the parallel light beams from the DTS-BL converge and form a uniformly distributed dense point light source array (PLSA). Light rays emitting from the PLSA are modulated by the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel and then integrated as volumetric pixels of the reconstructed three-dimensional (3D) image. Meanwhile, time-multiplexed generation of the point light sources (PLSs) in the array is realized by time-multiplexed lens stitching implemented with the DTS-BL. As a result, the number of the PLSs, as the pixels of the perceived 3D image, is increased and then the viewing resolution of the 3D image is obviously enhanced. Additionally, joint optical optimization for the DTS-BL and the compound lens-array is used for suppressing the aberrations, and the imaging distortion can be decreased to 0.23% from 5.80%. In the experiment, a floating full-parallax 3D light-field image can be perceived with 4 times the viewing resolution enhancement in the viewing angle of 50°, where 7056 viewpoints are presented.

RESUMO

In this paper, we design a polarization-maintaining CS2-core photonic crystal fiber (PM-CCPCF). The two air holes in the x direction are infiltrated with C2H5OH in order to introduce birefringence. By optimizing the structure parameters of the PM-CCPCF, it is demonstrated that the x-polarization fundamental mode has an all-normal dispersion profile and the corresponding y-polarization fundamental mode has an anomalous dispersion profile for a pump wavelength of 1.76 µm. Then, we investigate the supercontinuum (SC) generations when different fiber lengths, pump peak powers, and pump pulse widths are chosen, respectively. Simulation results show that for the x-polarization and y-polarization fundamental modes, highly coherent SCs can be generated by appropriately choosing the fiber length and pump pulse parameters. Finally, nonlinear propagation dynamics are analysed when the optimized fiber length and pump pulse parameters are used. The bandwidth of the SCs generated for the x-polarization and y-polarization fundamental modes can be up to 0.82 and 1.26 octave, respectively.

RESUMO

The bending response of polymer optical fibre Bragg grating (POFBG) and silica optical fibre Bragg grating (SOFBG) mounted on a brass beam have been systematically studied and compared. The results indicate that POFBG has higher (almost twice as much) bend sensitivity than SOFBG. Based on the difference between the bend and temperature sensitivity of POFBG and SOFBG, a new method of measuring vector bend and temperature simultaneously was proposed by using a hybrid sensor head with series connection of one POFBG and one SOFBG with different Bragg wavelengths. It provides high sensitivity and resolution for sensing bend and temperature changes simultaneously and independently. The proposed sensor can find some applications in the fields where high sensitivity for both bend and temperature measurements are required.

RESUMO

A crosstalk-suppressed dense multi-view light-field display based on real-time light-field pickup and reconstruction is demonstrated, which is capable of realizing high view density in the horizontal direction with low crosstalk between micro-pitch viewing zones. The micro-pinhole unit array and the vertically-collimated backlight are specially developed and used, instead of refraction-based optical components like lenticular lens, to avoid aberrations and to suppress crosstalk for accurately projecting multiple view perspectives into each eye pupil of the viewer. Additionally, the spatial information entropy is defined and investigated to improve 3D image perception for balancing resolution, which can be generally applicable to better-reconstructed 3D images with the limited number of resolution pixels. To enlarge the viewing angle of 3D images with smooth motion parallax, the novel high-efficient light-field pickup and reconstruction method based on the real-time position of the viewer's pupils is implemented with an eye tracker to scan 750 view perspectives with the correct geometric occlusion in real time at the frame rate of 40 fps. In the experiment, a floating horizontal-parallax 3D light-field image with the view density of 0.75 mm-1 and the micro-pitch crosstalk of less than 7% can be perceived with the clear floating focus depth of 10 cm and the high resolution of 1920 × 1080 in the viewing angle of 70°.

RESUMO

In this Letter, we demonstrate experimentally for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, discrete ultraviolet (UV) wavelength generation by cascaded intermodal FWM when femtosecond pump pulses at 800 nm are launched into the deeply normal dispersion region of the fundamental guided mode of a multimode photonic crystal fiber (MPCF). For pump pulses at average input powers of Pav=450, 550, and 650 mW, the first anti-Stokes waves are generated at the visible wavelength of 538.1 nm through intermodal phase matching between the fundamental and second-order guided mode of the MPCF. The first anti-Stokes waves generated then serve as the secondary pump for the next intermodal FWM process. The second anti-Stokes waves in the form of the third-order guided mode are generated at the UV wavelength of 375.8 nm. The maximum output power is above 10 mW for Pav=650 mW. We also confirm that the influences of fiber bending and intermodal walk-offs on the cascaded intermodal FWM-based frequency conversion process are negligible.

RESUMO

Deep-ultraviolet (UV) second-harmonics (SHs) have important applications in basic physics and applied sciences. However, it still remains challenging to generate deep-UV SHs especially in optical fibers. Here, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate the deep-UV SH generations (SHGs) by combined degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) and surface nonlinearity polarization in an in-house designed and fabricated air-silica photonic crystal fiber (PCF). When femtosecond pump pulses with average input power P av of 650 mW and center wavelength λ p of 810, 820, 830, and 840 nm are coupled into the normal dispersion region close to the zero-dispersion wavelength of the fundamental mode of the PCF, the anti-Stokes waves induced by degenerate FWM process are tunable from 669 to 612 nm. Then, they serve as the secondary pump, and deep-UV SHs are generated within the wavelength range of 334.5 to 306 nm as a result of surface nonlinearity polarization at the core-cladding interface of the PCF. The physical mechanism of the SHGs is confirmed by studying the dependences of the output power P SH of the SHs on the PCF length and time. Finally, we also establish a theoretical model to analyze the SHGs.

RESUMO

Parabolic pulses have important applications in both basic and applied sciences, such as high power optical amplification, optical communications, all-optical signal processing, etc. The generation of parabolic similaritons in tapered hydrogenated amorphous silicon photonic wires at telecom (λ ~ 1550 nm) and mid-IR (λ ≥ 2100 nm) wavelengths is demonstrated and analyzed. The self-similar theory of parabolic pulse generation in passive waveguides with increasing nonlinearity is presented. A generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation is used to describe the coupled dynamics of optical field in the tapered hydrogenated amorphous silicon photonic wires with either decreasing dispersion or increasing nonlinearity. The impacts of length dependent higher-order effects, linear and nonlinear losses including two-photon absorption, and photon-generated free carriers, on the pulse evolutions are characterized. Numerical simulations show that initial Gaussian pulses will evolve into the parabolic pulses in the waveguide taper designed.

RESUMO

In this Letter, polarization-dependent intermodal four-wave mixing (FWM) is demonstrated experimentally in a birefringent multimode photonic crystal fiber (BM-PCF) designed and fabricated in-house. Femtosecond pump pulses at wavelengths ∼800 nm polarized along one of the principal axes of the BM-PCF are coupled into a normal dispersion region away from the zero-dispersion wavelengths of the fundamental guided mode of the BM-PCF. Anti-Stokes and Stokes waves are generated in the 2nd guided mode at visible and near-infrared wavelengths, respectively. For pump pulses at an average input power of 500 mW polarized along the slow axis, the conversion efficiencies ηas and ηs of the anti-Stokes and Stokes waves generated at wavelengths 579.7 and 1290.4 nm are 19% and 14%, respectively. For pump pulses polarized along the fast axis, the corresponding ηas and ηs at 530.4 and 1627 nm are 23% and 18%, respectively. We also observed that fiber bending and intermodal walk-off have a small effect on the polarization-dependent intermodal FWM-based frequency conversion process.

RESUMO

A high-efficient computer-generated integral imaging (CGII) method is presented based on the backward ray-tracing technique. In traditional CGII methods, the total rendering time is long, because a large number of cameras are established in the virtual world. The ray origin and the ray direction for every pixel in elemental image array are calculated with the backward ray-tracing technique, and the total rendering time can be noticeably reduced. The method is suitable to create high quality integral image without the pseudoscopic problem. Real time and non-real time CGII rendering images and optical reconstruction are demonstrated, and the effectiveness is verified with different types of 3D object models. Real time optical reconstruction with 90 × 90 viewpoints and the frame rate above 40 fps for the CGII 3D display are realized without the pseudoscopic problem.

RESUMO

We propose and design a photonic-integrated optical biochemical sensor, which comprises a microring resonator and angular gratings in a silicon-on-insulator waveguide. With the combination of the angular gratings, the measurement range of the angular grating-microring resonator-based sensor significantly increases without the restriction of a free spectral range. Optimization of the several key structural parameters is investigated to achieve favorable transmission properties. A high-quality factor of more than 1.03×105 can meet the requirements of high sensitivity and low detection limit. The simulation results on the biochemical bulk sensing show that a concentration sensitivity of more than 95.27 pm/% and detection limit of less than 0.329% can be obtained. A large measurement range of 50.2 nm is achieved by the combination of the angular gratings. The investigation on the combination of microring resonator and angular grating is a valuable exploration of the liquid and gas biomedical sensing for the ultra-large measurement range.

RESUMO

Generation of spectrally-isolated wavelengths in the violet to blue region based on cascaded degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) is experimentally demonstrated for the first time in a tailor-made photonic crystal fiber, which has two adjacent zero dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs) at 696 and 852 nm in the fundamental mode. The influences of the wavelength λp and the input average power Pav of the femtosecond pump pulses on the phase-matched frequency conversion process are studied. When femtosecond pump pulses at λp of 880, 870, and 860 nm and Pav of 500 mW are coupled into the normal dispersion region close to the second ZDW, the first anti-Stokes waves generated near the first ZDW act as a secondary pump for the next FWM process. The conversion efficiency ηas2 of the second anti-Stokes waves, which are generated at the violet to blue wavelengths of 430, 456, and 472 nm, are 4.8, 6.48, and 9.66%, for λp equalling 880, 870, and 860 nm, respectively.
