RESUMO

A suspended polymer rod grating is fabricated on a fiber end for highly sensitive ultrasonic detection. Initially, the uniform polymer waveguide is prepared via the interconnection of holey fibers and the photopolymerization of an ultraviolet glue. A femtosecond laser point-by-point technique is then employed to form periodic grating structures inside the customized waveguide. A final uncovered micro-rod is achieved based on different corrosion resistances of the polymer waveguide and the fiber cladding. The polymer rod presents uniform morphology and controllable size with the support of the constructed air-hole microchannel. The self-alignment and the self-adhesion between the polymer waveguide and the fiber core contribute to the stable efficient optical coupling at the fiber-to-polymer joint. When applied to ultrasonic waves, the decreased size and low Young's modulus of the suspended rod provide benefits for the interaction between the polymer grating and the ultrasound strain. This sensor exhibits a noise equivalent pressure of 33 Pa and -10 d B bandwidth of 7.6 MHz. After packing with a waterproof adhesive, the polymer rod shows sufficient robustness for long-term operation. This Letter proposes a new, to the best of our knowledge, strategy for the fabrication of advanced polymer probes in multifunctional sensing.

RESUMO

We propose a sensitivity-enhanced fiber Bragg grating (FBG) magnetic field sensor for magnetic flux leakage (MFL) detection. The testing system consists of the FBG, suspended strain concentration structure, and two ceramic tubes bonded on a Terfenol-D base. We show the relation between the MFL and the width and depth of the crack, the lift-off of the sensor away from the surface of the workpiece, and the angle between the orientation of the sensor and the magnetization direction. The experimental results are very consistent with those obtained from finite element analysis simulations. The sensitivity of the sensor is increased to 81.11 pm/mT for increasing magnetic fields and 91.55 pm/mT for decreasing magnetic fields. The MFL test demonstrates that the sensor can identify a crack with a width of 0.5 mm and depth of 2 mm in an 8 mm thick workpiece. To the best of our knowledge, the magnetic field sensor proposed in this work has the highest sensitivity compared with the same types of sensors. Moreover, the application of an FBG-Terfenol-D based magnetic field sensor in the MFL test shows good performance. Compared with traditional electrical MFL testing technologies, the sensitivity-enhanced optical fiber magnetic field sensor has a higher resolution and longer survival time in harsh environments.

RESUMO

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder, characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. Huoxiang Drink (HD), derived from traditional Chinese medicine, has been reported to effectively treat digestive disorders caused by external cold and internal dampness. However, the pharmaceutical targets and mechanisms for HD against IBS remain unclear. Data mining, bioinformatics analysis, and network pharmacology were employed to explore the potential pharmacological mechanisms of HD against IBS. In this study, we screened 50 core targets to investigate the pharmacological mechanisms of HD against IBS. Enrichment analysis revealed that HD may participate in various signaling pathways, especially the inflammation-related tumor necrosis factor, signaling pathway and hypoxia-inducible factor signaling pathway. Molecular docking results confirmed that MOL000098 (Quercetin), MOL000006 (Luteolin), MOL005828 (Nobiletin), MOL005916 (Irisolidone), and MOL004328 (Naringenin), as key active ingredients in HD, bound to core targets (tumor protein P53, tumor necrosis factor, matrix metalloproteinases 9, and vascular endothelial growth factor-A) for topical treatment of IBS. This study suggested that HD offered a potential therapeutic strategy against IBS. Our findings may facilitate the efficient screening of active ingredients in HD and provide a theoretical basis for further validating the clinical therapeutic effects of HD on treating IBS.

RESUMO

We demonstrated a two-dimensional vector displacement (bending) sensor with high angular resolution based on Vernier effect generated by two cascaded Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPI) in a seven-core fiber (SCF). To form the FPI, plane-shaped refractive index modulations are fabricated as the reflection mirrors in the SCF using slit-beam shaping and femtosecond laser direct writing. Three pairs of cascaded FPIs are fabricated in the center core and the two non-diagonal edge cores of the SCF and applied to the vector displacement measurement. The proposed sensor exhibits high displacement sensitivity with significant direction dependence. The magnitude and direction of the fiber displacement can be obtained via monitoring the wavelength shifts. Moreover, the source fluctuations and the temperature cross-sensitivity can be referenced out by monitoring the bending-insensitive FPI of the center core.

RESUMO

Walnut is a natural source of antioxidants. Its antioxidant capacity is determined by the distribution and composition of phenolics. The key phenolic antioxidants in various forms (free, esterified, and bound) in walnut kernel (particularly seed skin) are unknown. The phenolic compounds in twelve walnut cultivars were analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer in this study. A boosted regression tree analysis was used to identify the key antioxidants. Ellagic acid, gallic acid, catechin, ferulic acid, and epicatechin were abundant in the kernel and skin. The majority of phenolic acids were widely distributed in the free, esterified, and bound forms in the kernel but more concentrated in bound phenolics in the skin. The total phenolic levels of the three forms were positively correlated with antioxidant activities (R = 0.76-0.94, p < 0.05). Ellagic acid was the most important antioxidant in the kernel, accounting for more than 20%, 40%, and 15% of antioxidants, respectively. Caffeic acid was responsible for up to 25% of free phenolics and 40% of esterified phenolics in the skin. The differences in the antioxidant activity between the cultivars were explained by the total phenolics and key antioxidants. The identification of key antioxidants is critical for new walnut industrial applications and functional food design in food chemistry.

RESUMO

We propose and fabricate a high-sensitivity vector vibration accelerometer with a multicore fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot (FBG-FP) structure. The acceleration sensitivities of the FBG and FBG-FP are 0.15 and 1.26 V/g, respectively. After packaging, the acceleration sensitivity of the FBG-FP is further improved to 6.89 V/g, which is 45.9 times higher than that of the FBG. The resonant frequency of the accelerometer increases from 30 to 86 Hz. Both the sensitivity and resonant frequency of the accelerometer are improved. Owing to the asymmetry of the outer core of the multicore fiber, high-sensitivity two-dimensional vector acceleration sensing can be realized.

RESUMO

A 2 × 2 ultra-wideband MIMO flexible antenna with a low profile and good isolation was designed for Internet of Things (IoT) realms and wearable devices. The antenna elements were placed on a novel flexible substrate of liquid crystal polymer (LCP) with compact dimensions fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW). In order to ameliorate isolation, the cross-shaped decoupling branches were placed among the antenna elements. The proposed UWB antenna can operate from 2.9 GHz to 10.86 GHz with a good reflection coefficient of S11 < −10 dB as well as a high isolation better than 22 dB. Its operating bands include 5G, WiFi, X-band, etc. Moreover, the parameters of diversity performance were also tested. These parameters included an average gain of approximately 4 dB, a low ECC of less than 0.01, and good diversity gain of 9.999. The flexible MIMO antenna performs well in bending and on-body conditions. To sum up, the antenna has good prospects in IoT applications and wearable fields.

RESUMO

We propose an ultrahigh-order fiber Bragg grating (UHO-FBG) containing dense resonants and its application as a novel filtering device in multi-wavelength lasers. The UHO-FBG is fabricated by femtosecond laser plane-by-plane direct inscription. Thanks to the plane-by-plane inscription, high-order Bragg resonances can be formed with multiple reflectance peaks of comparable reflectance in the range of the fiber operating bandwidth and without the transmission depression of long-period gratings in the transmission spectrum. We also experimentally demonstrate the use of UHO-FBG pairs in a distributed Bragg reflector laser, enabling the excitation of multi-wavelength lasers.

RESUMO

In this Letter, a helical-sampled fiber Bragg gratings (HSFBGs) fabrication using a femtosecond laser point-by-point (PBP) technique is proposed. The unique helical structure generates sampled gratings owing to its periodicity. A simple, single-step method for inscription of the sampled gratings is described. The effects of geometrical parameters, including length of grating, helical diameter, helical pitch, and off-axis distance on the resonances are studied, and a series of comb-like spectra are obtained.

RESUMO

A two-dimensional vector bending sensor that is both compact and simple is proposed and demonstrated, based on an edge-core cladding-type fiber Bragg grating (ECLFBG) inscribed in an edge-core. The ECLFBG is written parallel to the edge-core using a femtosecond laser point-by-point technique. The reflection spectrum of this ECLFBG varies significantly depending on the magnitude and direction of the fiber's bend. Combining the trend and sensitivity of the wavelength shift and reflection intensity variations of the ECLFBG, the bending magnitude and direction can be measured simultaneously.

RESUMO

This study proposes a novel, to the best of our knowledge, development of fluorotellurite glass fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). Shell-like morphology was achieved using a single femtosecond laser pulse illuminated through the fiber's polymer coating. Different FBG fabrication methods and parameters were systematically studied to optimize performance. The fluorotellurite FBG exhibited a high sensitivity to writing laser power and reflectivity saturation effect in repetitive writing. A low-insertion-loss fluorotellurite FBG with a reflectivity of over 99% and bandwidth of less than 1 nm was successfully inscribed. The flexible inscription methods can write an FBG at any wavelength in the fluorotellurite glass transparent window, and are applicable to infrared fiber lasers or sensors.

RESUMO

A highly localized eccentric fiber Bragg grating (EFBG) accelerometer was proposed, and its orientation-dependent measurement results were demonstrated experimentally. An EFBG was inscribed point-by-point (PbP) in a single-mode fiber (SMF) using a femtosecond laser, and the cladding mode was recoupled to excite the ghost mode through an abrupt taper. Owing to the asymmetry caused by the lateral offset of the EFBG, the ghost mode showed a significant directional response to acceleration. Furthermore, monitoring the fundamental core mode resonance can help calibrate accidental power perturbation or cross-sensitivity.

RESUMO

We propose and demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, two-dimensional vector accelerometer based on orthogonal cladding fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) inscribed in a standard single-mode fiber (SMF). The cladding FBGs are written by a femtosecond laser point-by-point technique and run parallel with the core. We experimentally demonstrate that the two orthogonal components of acceleration can be directly detected using simplified power-referenced detection. Using this structure, we can simultaneously obtain orientation information and acceleration in a SMF.

RESUMO

Rayleigh scattering enhanced nanoparticles-doped optical fibers are highly promising for distributed sensing applications, however, the high optical losses induced by that scattering enhancement restrict considerably their sensing distance to few meters. Fabrication of long-range distributed optical fiber sensors based on this technology remains a major challenge in optical fiber community. In this work, it is reported the fabrication of low-loss Ca-based nanoparticles doped silica fibers with tunable Rayleigh scattering for long-range distributed sensing. This is enabled by tailoring nanoparticle features such as particle distribution size, morphology and density in the core of optical fibers through preform and fiber fabrication process. Consequently, fibers with tunable enhanced backscattering in the range 25.9-44.9 dB, with respect to a SMF-28 fiber, are attained along with the lowest two-way optical losses, 0.1-8.7 dB/m, reported so far for Rayleigh scattering enhanced nanoparticles-doped optical fibers. Therefore, the suitability of Ca-based nanoparticles-doped optical fibers for distributed sensing over longer distances, from 5 m to more than 200 m, becomes possible. This study opens a new path for future works in the field of distributed sensing, since these findings may be applied to other nanoparticles-doped optical fibers, allowing the tailoring of nanoparticle properties, which broadens future potential applications of this technology.

RESUMO

The free, esterified and bound forms of 37 phenolic compounds (including hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavanols, flavonols and flavones) from walnut kernel (Juglans regia L.) were investigated in this study. Results showed that the majority of walnut phenolics were presented in the free form (51.1%-68.1%), followed by bound (21.0%-38.0%) and esterified forms (9.7%-18.7%). Ellagic acid, gallic acid, ferulic acid, sinapic acid and caffeic acid were widely distributed in three forms. Differently, jeuglone, kaempferol, quercetin-7-o-ß-d-glucoside and dihydroquercetin were only found in free phenolics. Among the three forms, free phenolics had the highest radical scavenging activity (IC50: DPPH, 15.5 µg/ml; ABTS, 13.6 µg/ml). The correlation coefficients between the antioxidant activities of phenolics and their corresponding contents were 0.82-0.92. More soluble phenolics (free and esterified forms) could be extracted by acetone, while methanol was better at extracting insoluble bound phenolics.

RESUMO

The potential health risk of trace elements in nut foods has been widely concerned. The accumulations of trace elements by plants in the environment are disturbed by multiple factors. The objective of this work was to investigate the risk levels of trace elements in walnuts and their influence factors (planting area and cultivar). A total of 228 walnut samples were collected from four major walnut producing areas of China. The contents of essential elements for Fe, Cu, Zn, Mo and Se were 35.8, 21.9, 14.8, 0.3 and 0.04 mg/kg, respectively. The contribution of Cu for dietary reference intake was as high as 82.22%. The risk levels of potential toxicological elements and toxic elements within the acceptable limits. Significantly, the hazard quotients (HQs) of Ba and Co were up to 26.14% and 25.31%, respectively. The effect of planting area on trace elements was determined from the aspects of regional distribution and urbanization. Significant differences of essential elements were found between northeast and northwest areas. The urbanization directly influenced toxic elements, which could cause variation up to 85.0% (Pb) and 42.9% (As). Finally, cultivar effect was confirmed that all walnut cultivars were divided into four categories with different trace element characteristics.

RESUMO

We report the polarization-maintaining properties of a highly elliptical core fiber surrounded by a trench that was designed to optimize the modal effective indices and bending loss for a total of five spatial modes (10 channels). In addition to the asymmetric core structure, the birefringence of the fiber is increased by the thermal stress introduced during the fabrication. The results show a modal birefringence larger than 10-4 for all guided spatial modes. The mode stability to bending is evaluated by selectively exciting/detecting each spatial mode while perturbing the fiber. This few-mode polarization-maintaining fiber is of interest for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-free mode division multiplexing transmission systems.

RESUMO

Traditional optical fiber acoustic sensors are mostly based on mechanical diaphragms and use indirect coupling between the acoustic and optical signals. The detectable frequency range and sound pressure range of such a sensor have limitations because they are influenced by the membrane or a mechanically deformable material. In this paper, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer-based membrane-free acoustic sensing method is developed. The sensing principle relies on direct detection of sound-pressure-induced changes of the refractive index in the open cavity. This enables an inherently flat frequency response over a broad bandwidth. Simulation and experiment were carried out to verify and demonstrate the idea. The results show that the membrane-free acoustic sensor has a flat frequency response from 500 Hz to 20 kHz.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The optimal timing of tracheotomy in critically ill ventilated patients remains controversial. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this meta-analysis was to assess tracheotomy timing for critically ill ventilated patients and determine the outcomes' reliability. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials. RESULTS: Compared with late tracheotomy, early tracheotomy presented a lower incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), shorter duration of mechanical ventilation (MV), and shorter intensive care unit (ICU) stay. However, trial sequential analysis (TSA), a kind of cumulative meta-analysis, indicated that the evidence was unreliable and inconclusive. CONCLUSIONS: The Findings suggest that early tracheotomy seems to be associated with a lower incidence of VAP, shorter duration of MV, shorter duration of sedation, and shorter ICU stay. However, the apparent benefits revealed in traditional meta-analysis contrast with the post-TSA results. More fully powered, randomized controlled trials focused on the outcomes of tracheotomy are highly warranted.

RESUMO

We propose and experimentally demonstrate an orientation-dependent fiber-optic bending sensor. The sensing probe consists of a fiber Bragg grating inscribed in both the fiber core and the surrounding cladding of a section of a side-hole fiber. We utilized a side-illumination technique using a femtosecond laser to achieve the grating structure formation. The transmission intensities of both resonances are highly sensitive bending of the fiber, and the bending response shows orientation dependence. The surrounding temperature fluctuation causes a wavelength shift, but not an intensity variation. Therefore, the proposed sensor can be employed for simultaneous measurement of bending and temperature.
