RESUMO

Indoor formaldehyde poses a significant carcinogenic risk to human health, making its removal imperative. Electro-Fenton degradation has emerged as a promising technology for addressing this concern. In the electro-Fenton system, ·OH is identified as the primary active species responsible for formaldehyde removal. Hence, its generation and utilization are pivotal for the system's effectiveness and economy. Experimental and quantum chemical methods were employed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of nitrogen doping on various aspects influencing ·OH generation and utilization. Results indicate that nitrogen doping synergistically enhances the generation and utilization of ·OH, leading to an improved formaldehyde removal efficiency in nitrogen-doped cathodic systems. The dominant nitrogen type influencing ·OH generation and utilization varies across different stages. Pyridinic nitrogen facilitates H2O2 adsorption through hydrogen bonding, while pyrrolic and graphitic nitrogen contribute to formaldehyde adsorption and catalyze the conversion of H2O2 to ·OH. Both pyridinic nitrogen and pyrrolic nitrogen boost the degradation of formaldehyde by ·OH. In comparison to the unmodified system, the modified system with NAC-GF/700C as cathode exhibits remarkable improvements. The formaldehyde removal efficiency has increased twofold, and energy consumption reduced by 73.45%. Furthermore, the system demonstrates excellent cyclic stability. These advancements can be attributed to the activation temperature, which leads to the appropriate types and high content of nitrogen elements in NAC-GF/700C. The research represents an important step towards more economical and efficient electro-Fenton technology for indoor formaldehyde removal.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and Lysinibacillus sphaericus (Ls) are the most widely used microbial insecticides. Both encounter unfavorable environmental factors and pesticides in the field. Here, the responses of Bt and Ls spores to glutaraldehyde were characterized using Raman spectroscopy and differential interference contrast imaging at the single-cell level. Bt spores were more sensitive to glutaraldehyde than Ls spores under prolonged exposure: <1.0% of Bt spores were viable after 10 min of 0.5% (v/v) glutaraldehyde treatment, compared to ~ 20% of Ls spores. The Raman spectra of glutaraldehyde-treated Bt and Ls spores were almost identical to those of untreated spores; however, the germination process of individual spores was significantly altered. The time to onset of germination, the period of rapid Ca2+-2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (CaDPA) release, and the period of cortex hydrolysis of treated Bt spores were significantly longer than those of untreated spores, with dodecylamine germination being particularly affected. Similarly, the germination of treated Ls spores was significantly prolonged, although the prolongation was less than that of Bt spores. Although the interiors of Bt and Ls spores were undamaged and CaDPA did not leak, proteins and structures involved in spore germination could be severely damaged, resulting in slower and significantly prolonged germination. This study provides insights into the impact of glutaraldehyde on bacterial spores at the single cell level and the variability in spore response to glutaraldehyde across species and populations.

Ceramic capacitors have great potential for application in power systems due to their fantastic energy storage performance (ESP) and wide operating temperature range. In this study, the (1 - x)Bi0.5Na0.47Li0.03Sn0.01Ti0.99O3-xKNbO3 (BNLST-xKN) energy storage ceramics were synthesized through the solid-phase reaction method. The addition of KN disrupts the long-range ferroelectric order of the BNLST ceramic, inducing the emergence of polar nanoregions (PNRs), which enhances the ESP of the ceramics. The BNLST-0.2KN ceramic demonstrates a high recovered energy density (Wrec ∼ 3.66 J/cm3) and efficiency (η ∼ 85.8%) under a low electric field of 210 kV/cm. Meantime, it exhibits a large current density (CD ∼ 831.74 A/cm2), high power density (PD ∼ 78.86 MW/cm3), and fast discharge rate (t0.9 ∼ 0.1 µs), along with good temperature stability and excellent fatigue stability. These properties make the BNLST-0.2KN ceramic a promising candidate for energy storage applications in low electric fields.

Objective: Previous research has shown numerous health benefits of yoga, a multicomponent physical and mental activity. The three important aspects of both traditional and modern yoga are breath work, postures, and meditation. However, the neural mechanisms associated with these three aspects of yoga remain largely unknown. The present study investigated the neural underpinnings associated with each of these three yoga components in long- and short-term yoga practitioners to clarify the neural advantages of yoga experience, aiming to provide a more comprehensive understanding of yoga's health-promoting effects. Methods: Participants were 40 Chinese women, 20 with a long-term yoga practice and 20 with a short-term yoga practice. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy was conducted while participants performed abdominal breathing, mental imagery of yoga postures, and mindfulness meditation. The oxygenated hemoglobin concentrations activated in the brain during these three tasks were used to assess the neural responses to the different aspects of yoga practice. The self-reported mastery of each yoga posture was used to assess the advantages of practicing yoga postures. Results: Blood oxygen levels in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during breath work were significantly higher in long-term yoga practitioners than in short-term yoga practitioners. In the mental imagery of yoga postures task, self-reported data showed that long-term yoga practitioners had better mastery than short-term practitioners. Long-term yoga practitioners demonstrated lower activation in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, with lower blood oxygen levels associated with performing this task, than short-term yoga practitioners. In the mindfulness meditation task, blood oxygen levels in the orbitofrontal cortex and the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex were significantly higher in long-term yoga practitioners than in short-term yoga practitioners. Conclusion: The three core yoga components, namely, yogic breathing, postures, and meditation, showed differences and similarities in the activation levels of the prefrontal cortex. Long-term practice of each component led to the neural benefits of efficient activation in the prefrontal cortex, especially in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex.

Moving from sole cropping to intercropping is a transformative change in agriculture, contributing to yield. Soybeans adapt to light conditions in intercropping by adjusting the onset of reproduction and the inflorescence architecture to optimize reproductive success. Maize-soybean strip intercropping (MS), maize-soybean relay strip intercropping (IS), and sole soybean (SS) systems are typical soybean planting systems with significant differences in light environments during growth periods. To elucidate the effect of changes in the light environment on soybean flowering processes and provide a theoretical basis for selecting suitable varieties in various planting systems to improve yields, field experiments combining planting systems (IS, MS, and SS) and soybean varieties (GQ8, GX7, ND25, and NN996) were conducted in 2021 and 2022. Results showed that growth recovery in the IS resulted in a balance in the expression of TERMINAL FLOWER 1 (TFL1) and FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) in the meristematic tissues of soybeans, which promoted the formation of new branches or flowers. IS prolonged the flowering time (2-7 days) and increased the number of forming flowers compared with SS (93.0 and 169%) and MS (67.3 and 103.3%) at the later soybean flowering stage. The higher carbon and nitrogen content in the middle and bottom canopies of soybean contributed to decreased flower abscission by 26.7 and 30.2%, respectively, compared with SS. Canopy light environment recovery promoted branch and flower formation and transformation of flowers into pods with lower flower-pod abscission, which contributed to elevating soybean yields in late-maturing and multibranching varieties (ND25) in IS.

Hypochlorite (ClO-), as one of reactive oxygen species (ROS), is closely linked to various illnesses and is essential for the proper functioning of immune system. Hence, monitoring and assessing ClO- levels in organisms are extremely important for the clinical diagnosis of ClO--related disorders. In this study, a novel ClO--selective fluorescent probe, DCP-ClO, was synthesized with dicyanoisophorone-xanthene unit as parent fluorophore, which displayed excellent selectivity towards ClO-, near-infrared emission (755 nm), large Stokes shift (100 nm), real-time response to ClO-, high sensitivity (LOD = 3.95 × 10-8 M), and low cytotoxicity. The recognition mechanism of DCP-ClO towards ClO- was confirmed to be a typical ICT process by HPLC-MS, HR-MS, 1H NMR and theoretical calculations. Meanwhile, DCP-ClO demonstrated remarkable efficacy in monitoring ClO- levels in water samples and eye-catching ability in imaging endogenous/exogenous ClO- in living organisms, which verified its potential as a powerful tool for the recognition of ClO- in complex biological systems.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a radiomics-clinical nomogram using multi-sequence MRI to predict recurrence-free survival (RFS) in bladder cancer (BCa) patients and assess its superiority over clinical models. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 229 BCa patients with preoperative multi-sequence MRI was divided into a training set (n = 160) and a validation set (n = 69). Radiomics features were extracted from T2-weighted images, diffusion-weighted imaging, apparent diffusion coefficient, and dynamic contrast-enhanced images. Effective features were identified using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method. Clinical risk factors were determined via univariate and multivariate Cox analysis, leading to the creation of a radiomics-clinical nomogram. Kaplan-Meier analysis and log-rank tests assessed the relationship between radiomics features and RFS. We calculated the net reclassification improvement (NRI) to evaluate the added value of the radiomics signature and used decision curve analysis (DCA) to assess the nomogram's clinical validity. RESULTS: Radiomics features significantly correlated with RFS (log-rank p < 0.001) and were independent of clinical factors (p < 0.001). The combined model, incorporating radiomics features and clinical data, demonstrated the best prognostic value, with C-index values of 0.853 in the training set and 0.832 in the validation set. Compared to the clinical model, the radiomics-clinical nomogram exhibited superior calibration and classification (NRI: 0.6768, 95% CI: 0.5549-0.7987, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The radiomics-clinical nomogram, based on multi-sequence MRI, effectively assesses the BCa recurrence risk. It outperforms both the radiomics model and the clinical model in predicting BCa recurrence risk. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The radiomics-clinical nomogram, utilizing multi-sequence MRI, holds promise for predicting bladder cancer recurrence, enhancing individualized clinical treatment, and performing tumor surveillance. KEY POINTS: • Radiomics plays a vital role in predicting bladder cancer recurrence. • Precise prediction of tumor recurrence risk is crucial for clinical management. • MRI-based radiomics models excel in predicting bladder cancer recurrence.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a hazardous food contaminant with significant health risks. Dual-channel OTA detection is noted for its cross-reference capability and high accuracy. Still, challenges in addressing in-system corrections and "signal off" related false positives and limited signal gains remain. Herein, we developed a dual-channel "signal on" aptasensor with one recognition process and two independent signal outputs for OTA analysis. The OTA aptamer binds to magnetic beads (MBs) and partially hybridizes with a complementary-trigger (cDNA-Trigger) sequence. Adding OTA disrupts the duplex sequence, leading to G-quadruplex (G4) formation and enrichment on the MBs, which then interacts with hemin to catalyze a color signal. Concurrently, the freed cDNA-Trigger catalyzes an enzyme-free DNA circuit, producing a fluorescence signal. The magnetic enrichment and signal amplification strategies make the proposed assay demonstrate excellent sensitivity toward OTA, with limits of detection (LOD) of 0.017 pM in the fluorescence channel and 48.1 pM in the colorimetric channel. Both channels have effectively detected OTA in grape juice and baijiu, demonstrating their applicability and reliability. Moreover, given the widespread use of smartphones globally, a mini-program with a self-correction function was designed to facilitate on-site colorimetric channel monitoring, making OTA detection more accessible and user-friendly.

The tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) serocomplex includes several medically important flavivirus members endemic to Europe, Asia, and North America, which can induce severe neuroinvasive or viscerotropic diseases with unclear mechanisms of pathogenesis. Langat virus (LGTV) shares a high sequence identity with TBEV but exhibits lower pathogenic potential in humans and serves as a model for virus-host interactions. In this study, we demonstrated that LGTV infection inhibits the activation of gp130/JAK/STAT (Janus kinases (JAK) and signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)) signaling, which plays a pivotal role in numerous biological processes. Our data show that the LGTV-infected cells had significantly lower phosphorylated STAT3 (pSTAT3) protein upon oncostatin M (OSM) stimulation than the mock-infected control. LGTV infection blocked the nuclear translocation of STAT3 without a significant effect on total STAT3 protein level. LGTV inhibited JAK1 activation and reduced gp130 protein expression in infected cells, with the viral NS5 protein mediating this effect. TBEV infection also reduces gp130 level. On the other hand, pretreatment of Vero cells with OSM significantly reduces LGTV replication, and STAT1/STAT2 knockdown had little effect on OSM-mediated antiviral effect, which suggests it is independent of STAT1/STAT2 and, instead, it is potentially mediated by STAT3 signlaing. These findings shed light on the LGTV and TBEV-cell interactions, offering insights for the future development of antiviral therapeutics and improved vaccines.

Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Effective treatment of bacterial sepsis remains challenging due to the rapid progression of infection and the systemic inflammatory response. In this study, monolayer BiO2- X nanosheets (BiO2- X NSs) with oxygen-rich vacancies through sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation are successfully synthesized. Herein, the BiO2- X NSs exhibit a novel nanozyme-enabled intervention strategy for the management of bacterial sepsis, based on its pH dependent dual antibacterial and anti-inflammatory functions. BiO2- X NSs exhibit effective antibacterial by utilizing oxidase (OXD)-like activity. Additionally, BiO2- X NSs can scavenge multiple reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitigate systemic hyperinflammation by mimicking superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). These dual capabilities of BiO2- X NSs allow them to address bacterial infection, proinflammatory cytokines secretion and ROS burst collaboratively, effectively reversing the progression of bacterial sepsis. In vivo experiments have demonstrated that BiO2- X NSs significantly reduce bacterial burden, attenuate systemic hyperinflammation, and rapidly rescued organ damage. Importantly, no obvious adverse effects are observed at the administered dose of BiO2- X NSs. This study presents a novel defect engineering strategy for the rational design of high-performance nanozymes and development of new nanomedicines for managing bacterial sepsis.

The cycle time of a standard liquid chromatography (LC) system is the sum of the time for the chromatographic run and the autosampler injection sequence. Although LC separation times in the 1-10 s range have been demonstrated, injection sequences are commonly >15 s, limiting throughput possible with LC separations. Further, such separations are performed on relatively large bore columns requiring flow rates of ≥5 mL/min, thus generating large volumes of mobile phase waste when used for large scale screening and increasing the difficulty in interfacing to mass spectrometry. Here, a droplet injector system was established that replaces the autosampler with a four-port, two-position valve equipped with a 20 nL internal loop interfaced to a syringe pump and a three-axis positioner to withdraw sample droplets from a well plate. In the system, sample and immiscible fluid are pulled alternately from a well plate into a capillary and then through the injection valve. The valve is actuated when sample fills the loop to allow sequential injection of samples at high throughput. Capillary LC columns with 300 µm inner diameter were used to reduce the consumption of mobile phase and sample. The system achieved 96 separations of 20 nL droplet samples containing 3 components in as little as 8.1 min with 5-s cycle time. This system was coupled to a mass spectrometer through an electrospray ionization source for high-throughput chemical reaction screening.

Development of new near-infrared fluorophores is one of the eternal themes in the field of biosensing and biological imaging. In this work, we constructed a novel fluorophore platform MOR by replacing methylindole of hemicyanine fluorophore (CyR) with benzoxazole to acquire better fluorescence characteristics. Based on the platform, a near infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe MOR-CES2 was synthesized for the specific "off-on" response to carboxylesterase 2 (CES2). The probe exhibited excellent properties including near-infrared emission (735 nm), large Stokes shift (105 nm), high sensitivity (LOD, 0.3 ng/mL), and rapid response (15 min). The successful application of MOR-CES2 in biological imaging of CES2 in mice with thyroid cancer and inflammatory bowel disease demonstrated that the probe could identify cancer cells and tissues and sensitively respond to inflammation. The results proved the potency of MOR-CES2 as an efficient imaging tool to assist in the surgical resection of CES2-related tumors.

Pigs are natural host to various zoonotic pathogens including viruses. In this study, we analyzed the viral communities in the feces of 89 piglets with diarrhea under one month old which were collected from six farms in Jiangsu Province of the Eastern China, using the unbiased virus metagenomic method. A total of 89 libraries were constructed, and 46937894 unique sequence reads were generated by Illumina sequencing. Overall, the family Picornaviridae accounted for the majority of the total reads of putative mammalian viruses. Ten novel virus genomes from different family members were discovered, including Parvoviridae (n = 2), Picobirnaviridae (n = 4) and CRESS DNA viruses (n = 4). A large number of phages were identified, which mainly belonged to the order Caudovirales and the family Microviridae. Moreover, some identified viruses were closely related to viruses found in non-porcine hosts, highlighting the potential for cross-species virus dissemination. This study increased our understanding of the fecal virus communities of diarrhea piglets and provided valuable information for virus monitoring and preventing.

Tuberculosis (TB) today remains the leading cause of global deaths due to infectious bacterial pathogens. The Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is the only vaccine clinically used to prevent TB. However, its limitations in preventing latent infection and TB reactivation mean that it does not provide comprehensive protection. In this study, we successfully constructed and expressed the multistage fusion protein, SHR3, and used whole blood IFN-γ release assay (WBIA) with flow cytometry to detect antigen specificity, further confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). SHR3 and its subfractional proteins stimulated the level of IFN-γ production by lymphocytes from M. tb-infected patients, inducing the production of single-positive and double-positive CD4+ and CD8+ T cells with IFN-γ and IL-2, at levels significantly higher than those of healthy controls. The fusion protein and complex adjuvant group (SHR3/DMT) induced mice to produce significantly higher levels of IgG antibodies and their subclasses, with IgG2a/IgG1 results showing a convergent Th1-type response; mice in the BCG + SHR3/DMT group induced secretion of the highest levels of IL-2, and TNF-α, irrespective of stimulation with purified protein derivative or SHR3. These findings suggest that SHR3/DMT could be a potential subunit vaccine candidate that may serve as an effective booster vaccine after BCG primary immunization.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between exercise addiction and brain structure in middle-older individuals, and to examine the role of self-efficacy in mediating physiological changes associated with exercise addiction. A total of 133 patients exhibiting symptoms of exercise addiction were recruited for this study (male = 43, age 52.86 ± 11.78 years). Structural magnetic resonance imaging and behavioral assessments were administered to assess the study population. Voxel-based morphological analysis was conducted using SPM12 software. Mediation analysis was employed to explore the potential neuropsychological mechanism of self-efficacy in relation to exercise addiction. The findings revealed a positive correlation between exercise addiction and gray matter volume in the right inferior temporal region and the right hippocampus. Conversely, there was a negative correlation with gray matter volume in the left Rolandic operculum. Self-efficacy was found to indirectly influence exercise addiction by affecting right inferior temporal region gray matter volume and acted as a mediating variable in the relationship between the gray matter volume of right inferior temporal region and exercise addiction. In summary, this study elucidates the link between exercise addiction and brain structure among middle-older individuals. It uncovers the intricate interplay among exercise addiction, brain structure, and psychological factors. These findings enhance our comprehension of exercise addiction and offer valuable insights for the development of interventions and treatments.

Bats are important reservoirs for many zoonotic viruses. To explore and monitor potential novel viruses carried by bats, 21 liver samples of bats (Hipposideros armiger) were collected from Yunnan Province in southern China. Only one (4.8%) of all models was detected with adenovirus. The whole genome strain obtained by the viral metagenomics method combined with PCR was temporarily named YN01. The complete genome of YN01 was 37,676 bp, with a G + C content of 55.20% and 28 open reading frames. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the strain YN01 can be classified as genus Mastadenovirus and was the most similar to the adenovirus isolated from Rhinolophus sinicus in China in 2016. The analysis is needed to verify the possibility of cross-species transmission. This virological investigation has increased our understanding of the ecology of bat-borne viruses in this area and provided a reference for possible future infectious diseases.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical, imaging and pathological features of extraskeletal osteosarcoma (EOS) and to improve the understanding of this disease and other similar lesions. METHODS: The data for 11 patients with pathologically confirmed extraosseous osteosarcoma, including tumour site and size and imaging and clinical manifestations, were analysed retrospectively. RESULTS: Six patients were male (60%), and 5 were female (40%); patient age ranged from 23 to 76 years (average age 47.1 years). Among the 11 patients, 7 had clear calcifications or ossification with different morphologies, and 2 patients showed a massive mature bone tumour. MRI showed a mixed-signal mass with slightly longer T1 and T2 signals in the tumour parenchyma. Enhanced CT and MRI scans showed enhancement in the parenchyma. Ten patients had different degrees of necrosis and cystic degeneration in the mass, 2 of whom were complicated with haemorrhage, and MRI showed "fluid‒fluid level" signs. Of the 11 patients, five patients survived after surgery, and no obvious recurrence or metastasis was found on imaging examination. One patient died of lung metastasis after surgery, and 2 patients with open biopsy died of disease progression. One patient died of respiratory failure 2 months after operation. 2 patients had positive surgical margins, and 1 had lung metastasis 6 months after operation and died 19 months after operation. Another patient had recurrence 2 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of EOS requires a combination of clinical, imaging and histological examinations. Cystic degeneration and necrosis; mineralization is common, especially thick and lumpy mineralization. Extended resection is still the first choice for localized lesions. For patients with positive surgical margins or metastases, adjuvant chemoradiotherapy is needed.

Leaf veins play an important role in water transport, and are closely associated with photosynthesis and transpiration. Resource heterogeneity in the environment, particularly in water resources, causes changes in leaf vein structure and function, thereby affecting plant growth and community assemblages. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the spatial variation and evolutionary mechanisms of leaf veins in natural communities. Natural communities are composed of dominant and non-dominant species. However, few studies to date have explored the trait variation of dominant and non-dominant species on a large scale. In this study, we set up 10 sampling sites along the water gradient (from east to west) in the Loess Plateau of China, and measured and calculated the vein density (vein length per unit area, VLA), vein diameter (VD), and vein volume ratio (VVR) of 173 species, including dominant and non-dominant species. The mean values of VLA, VD, and VVR were 10.95 mm mm-2, 22.24 µm, and 3%, respectively. VD and VVR of the dominant species were significantly higher than those of the non-dominant species. Unexpectedly, there was no significant change in the VLA with the water gradient, although the VD increased with drought. Leaf vein traits did not change significantly with evolution. There was a significant trade-off between VLA and VD. Our findings demonstrate that the response of veins to environmental changes is dependent on the degree of drought and provide new insights for further large-scale studies.

Equiluminant stimuli help assess the integrity of colour perception and the relationship of colour to other visual features. As a result of individual variation, it is necessary to calibrate experimental visual stimuli to suit each individual's unique equiluminant ratio. Most traditional methods rely on training observers to report their subjective equiluminance point. Such paradigms cannot easily be implemented on pre-verbal or non-verbal observers. Here, we present a novel Pupil Frequency-Tagging Method (PFTM) for detecting a participant's unique equiluminance point without verbal instruction and with minimal training. PFTM analyses reflexive pupil oscillations induced by slow (< 2 Hz) temporal alternations between coloured stimuli. Two equiluminant stimuli will induce a similar pupil dilation response regardless of colour; therefore, an observer's equiluminant point can be identified as the luminance ratio between two colours for which the oscillatory amplitude of the pupil at the tagged frequency is minimal. We compared pupillometry-based equiluminance ratios to those obtained with two established techniques in humans: minimum flicker and minimum motion. In addition, we estimated the equiluminance point in non-human primates, demonstrating that this new technique can be successfully employed in non-verbal subjects.

The therapeutic effectiveness of anticancer drugs, including nanomedicines, can be enhanced with active receptor-targeting strategies. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is an important cancer biomarker, constitutively expressed in sarcoma patients of different histological types. The present work reports materials and in vitro biomedical analyses of silanized (passive delivery) and/or EGF-functionalized (active delivery) ceria nanorods exhibiting highly defective catalytically active surfaces. The EGFR-targeting efficiency of nanoceria was confirmed by receptor-binding studies. Increased cytotoxicity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were observed for EGF-functionalized nanoceria owing to enhanced cellular uptake by HT-1080 fibrosarcoma cells. The uptake was confirmed by TEM and confocal microscopy. Silanized nanoceria demonstrated negligible/minimal cytotoxicity toward healthy MRC-5 cells at 24 and 48 h, whereas this was significant at 72 h owing to a nanoceria accumulation effect. In contrast, considerable cytotoxicity toward the cancer cells was exhibited at all three times points. The ROS generation and associated cytotoxicity were moderated by the equilibrium between catalysis by ceria, generation of cell debris, and blockage of active sites. EGFR-targeting is shown to enhance the uptake levels of nanoceria by cancer cells, subsequently enhancing the overall anticancer activity and therapeutic performance of ceria.
