RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: A retrospective analysis was performed to explore the clinical effect of the Posterior Nasal Nerve (PNN) resection combined with hormone transnasal nebulization on Difficult-to-Treat Rhinosinusitis (DTRS). METHODS: A total of 120 DTRS patients were selected and divided into a control group (n = 60) and a study group (n = 60) according to different treatments. The control group patients were treated via PNN resection, followed by normal saline transnasal nebulization; the study group patients were given PNN resection and then treated with budesonide suspension transnasal nebulization. Subsequently, the comparison was performed between the two groups in terms of (1) Clinical baseline characteristics; (2) Sino-nasal Outcome Test (SNOT)-22 scores before treatment and after 3-months, 6-months and 12-months of treatment; (3) Lund-MacKay scores before treatment and after 10, 30, 90, and 180 days of treatment; (4) Incidence of adverse reactions during treatment. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in SNOT-22 or Lund-Kennedy scores between the two groups before treatment (p > 0.05). After treatment, the SNOT-22 and Lund-Kennedy scores of the control and the study groups were decreased, and compared with the control group, the SNOT-22 and Lund-Kennedy scores in the study group improved more significantly (p < 0.05). In addition, the study group and the control group presented with 1 and 4 cases of nasal adhesion, 2 and 3 cases of epistaxis, 1 and 4 cases of sinus orifice obstruction, 1 and 3 cases of lacrimal duct injuries, respectively. The incidence of adverse reactions in the study group was significantly lower than that in the control group (8.3% vs. 23.3%) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: PNN resection combined with hormone transnasal nebulization treatment can improve the symptoms and quality of life of DTRS patients, with good clinical efficacy but few adverse reactions. Therefore, such combination treatment deserves a promotion and application clinically. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3.

RESUMO

A recently proposed method is upgraded to convert two amplitude phase modulation systems (APMSs) to pure phase elements (PPEs), for generating the stable propagation Bessel beam and the axial multifoci beam, respectively. Phase functions of the PPEs are presented analytically. Numerical simulations by the complete Rayleigh-Sommerfeld method demonstrate that the converted PPE has implemented the same optical functionalities as the corresponding APMS, in either the longitudinal or the transverse direction. Compared with the traditional APMS, the converted PPE possesses many advantages such as fabrication process simplification, system complexity reduction, production cost conservation, alignment error avoidance, and experimental precision enhancement. These inherent advantages position the PPE as an ideal choice and driving force behind further advancements in optical system technology.

RESUMO

We propose what we believe to be a new kind of diffractive phase element, i.e., vortex phase plate (VPP) with phase singularities along the azimuth direction. Phase function of the proposed VPP is given analytically. Axial intensity oscillations of propagating Bessel beams are ideally suppressed by using the proposed VPP. Compared with the traditional amplitude mask, the proposed VPP takes such advantages as a simpler fabrication procedure and a lower cost.

RESUMO

The binary amplitude filter (BAF) is employed to generate stable propagation Bessel beams and axial multifoci beams, rather than the traditional continuous amplitude filter (CAF). We introduce a parameter along the azimuth direction, i.e., angular order of the BAF, to weaken transverse intensity asymmetry. Numerical simulations reveal that the BAF implements the same optical functionalities as the CAF. The BAF holds advantages over the traditional CAF: a simpler fabrication process, a lower cost, and a higher experimental accuracy. It is believed that the BAF should have many practical applications in future optical systems.

RESUMO

Terahertz (THz) near-field microscopy retains the advantages of THz radiation and realizes sub-wavelength imaging, which enables applications in fundamental research and industrial fields. In most THz near-field microscopies, the sample surface must be approached by a THz detector or source, which restricts the sample choice. Here, a technique was developed based on an air-plasma dynamic aperture, where two mutually perpendicular air-plasmas overlapped to form a cross-filament above a sample surface that modulated an incident THz beam. THz imaging with quasi sub-wavelength resolution (approximately λ/2, where λ is the wavelength of the THz beam) was thus observed without approaching the sample with any devices. Damage to the sample by the air-plasmas was avoided. Near-field imaging of four different materials was achieved, including metallic, semiconductor, plastic, and greasy samples. The resolution characteristics of the near-field system were investigated with experiment and theory. The advantages of the technique are expected to accelerate the advancement of THz microscopy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Most patients with gastric cancer (GCa) are diagnosed at an advanced stage. We aimed to investigate novel fecal signatures for clinical application in early diagnosis of GCa. METHODS: This was an observational study that included 1043 patients from 10 hospitals in China. In the discovery cohort, 16S ribosomal RNA gene analysis was performed in paired samples (tissues and feces) from patients with GCa and chronic gastritis (ChG) to determine differential abundant microbes. Their relative abundances were detected using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction to test them as bacterial candidates in the training cohort. Their diagnostic efficacy was validated in the validation cohort. RESULTS: Significant enrichments of Streptococcus anginosus (Sa) and Streptococcus constellatus (Sc) in GCa tumor tissues (P < .05) and feces (P < .0001) were observed in patients with intraepithelial neoplasia, early and advanced GCa. Either the signature parallel test Sa∪Sc or single signature Sa/Sc demonstrated superior sensitivity (Sa: 75.6% vs 72.1%, P < .05; Sc: 84.4% vs 64.0%, P < .001; and Sa∪Sc: 91.1% vs 81.4%, P < .01) in detecting early GCa compared with advanced GCa (specificity: Sa: 84.0% vs 83.9%, Sc: 70.4% vs 82.3%, and Sa∪Sc: 64.0% vs 73.4%). Fecal signature Sa∪Sc outperformed Sa∪CEA/Sc∪CEA in the discrimination of advanced GCa (sensitivity: 81.4% vs 74.2% and 81.4% vs 72.3%, P < .01; specificity: 73.4% vs 81.0 % and 73.4% vs 81.0%). The performance of Sa∪Sc in the diagnosis of both early and advanced GCa was verified in the validation cohort. CONCLUSION: Fecal Sa and Sc are noninvasive, accurate, and sensitive signatures for early warning in GCa. (ClinicalTrials.gov, Number: NCT04638959).

RESUMO

Adding aluminum hydride (AlH3) into energetic materials (EMs) can improve their combustion and energy performance effectively. However, the potential mechanism of AlH3 on EMs is still unclear. Based on the ReaxFF-lg method, the thermal decomposition of nitromethane/nano-aluminum hydride (NM/nano-AlH3) composites were studied. The addition of AlH3 reduces the energy barrier and increases the energy release during the decomposition of NM, accelerates the decomposition of NM. The main way of AlH3 oxidation involves the capture of O atoms from NM. The results show that AlH3 content and passivated layer affect the oxidation and hydrogen release of AlH3. The explosion of small particle size AlH3 leads to rapid oxidation and hydrogen release. The oxidation of large particle size AlH3 is dominated by the inward and outward diffusion of O and Al atoms. The products of NM/nano-AlH3 composites are H2O, CO2, N2 gases, and Al clusters. This work is expected to guide the application of AlH3 in EMs.

RESUMO

The thermal decomposition of pure nitromethane (NM) and NM/nano-aluminum (Al) composites was simulated by reactive molecular dynamics with ReaxFF-lg corrected force field parameters. The initial decomposition pathway of NM molecules in pure NM is C-N bond rupture. However, NM is decomposed early by the initial pathway of N-O bond rupture when it mixes with nano-Al because of the strong attraction of Al to O. The decomposition process of NM/nano-Al can be divided into three stages: adsorption, slow decomposition, and rapid decomposition. The addition of nano-Al particles decreases the energy barrier in decomposition, increases the released energy, and reduces the decomposition temperature of NM. Adding 3% Al to the explosive can make the detonation pressure 3.083% higher than that of pure system. Compared with pure NM, the energy barrier of 16% Al composite is 25.63 kcal/mol lower and the energy released is 22.99 kcal/mol more. There is an optimal amount of Al contents being added to the NM composite by which the largest total numbers of gaseous products (N2, H2O, and CO2) are released. The effect of Al additives on CO2 production is the most obvious. The maximum detonation pressure can be achieved by adding an appropriate amount of nano-Al, which is similar to the experimental results. Graphical abstract.

RESUMO

NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2 and CUC2) proteins are plant-specific transcription factors (TFs) that are important in plant abiotic stress responses. In this study we isolated a NAC gene from Capsicum annuum leaves, designated as CaNAC064. We characterized the amino acid sequence of CaNAC064 and found that it contain conserved domains of the NAC family, including a highly conserved N-terminus domain and a highly variable C-terminus domain. Expression analysis showed that the 40C, 400C, salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) treatments strongly induced the expression of CaNAC064 through silencing of CaNAC064 in pepper and overexpressing in Arabidopsis. CaNAC064-silenced pepper plants exhibited more serious wilting, higher MDA contents and chilling injury index, lower proline content, and more accumulation of ROS in the leaves after cold stress. The CaNAC064-overexpressing Arabidopsis plants exhibited lower MDA content, chilling injury index and relative electrolyte leakage content as compared to WT plants under cold stress. Transcriptional activation activity analysis indicated that CaNAC064 has transcriptional activation activity in the 691-1071 bp key region. We identified 45 proteins that putatively interact with CaNAC064 using the Yeast Two-Hybrid method. According to the Yeast Two-Hybrid and BIFC results, CaNAC064 interacted with low temperature-induced haplo-proteinase proteins in plant cell. These results suggested that CaNAC064 positively modulates plant cold-tolerance, laying the foundation for future investigations into the role of NACs as regulatory proteins of cold tolerance in plants.

RESUMO

AIM: To compare feasibility and safety after gastrointestinal checkup by standing-type magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy (SMCE) and conventional gastroscopy. METHODS: This was a prospective multicenter, blinded study that compared SMCE with gastroscopy in patients from April 2018 to July 2018. All patients first underwent SMCE and then subsequently had gastroscopy with i.v. anesthesia. We calculated the compliance rates of gastric lesion detection by SMCE using gastroscopy as the standard. Capsule retention rate, incidence of adverse events, and patient satisfaction were documented throughout the study. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty-one patients who completed SMCE and gastroscopy were included in the analysis. Positive compliance rate among SMCE and gastroscopy was 92.0% (95% CI: 80.77%-97.78%). Negative compliance rate was 95.5% (89.80%, 98.52%). Moreover, overall compliance rate was 94.41% (89.65%, 97.41%). Sixty-four pathological outcomes were identified. Of these 64 outcomes, 50 were detected by both procedures. The gastroscopy method neglected seven findings (such as five erosions, one polyp, and one ulcer). Furthermore, SMCE also overlooked seven lesions (i.e. one erosion, two polyps, one atrophy, and three submucosal tumors). Capsule retention or related adverse events were not reported. CONCLUSION: Standing-type magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy provides equivalent agreement with gastroscopy and may be useful for screening of gastric illnesses without any anesthesia.

RESUMO

Dehydrins play an important role in improving plant resistance to abiotic stresses. In this study, we isolated a dehydrin gene from pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) leaves, designated as CaDHN4. Sub-cellular localization of CaDHN4 was to be found in the nucleus and membrane. To authenticate the function of CaDHN4 in cold- and salt-stress responses and abscisic acid (ABA) sensitivity, we reduced the CaDHN4 expression using virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), and overexpressed the CaDHN4 in Arabidopsis. We found that silencing of CaDHN4 reduced the growth of pepper seedlings and CaDHN4-silenced plants exhibited more serious wilting, higher electrolyte leakage, and more accumulation of ROS in the leaves compared to pTRV2:00 plants after cold stress, and lower chlorophyll contents and higher electrolyte leakage compared to pTRV2:00 plants under salt stress. However, CaDHN4-overexpressing Arabidopsis plants had higher seed germination rates and post-germination primary root growth, compared to WT plants under salt stress. In response to cold and salt stresses, the CaDHN4-overexpressed Arabidopsis exhibited lower MDA content, and lower relative electrolyte leakage compared to the WT plants. Under ABA treatments, the fresh weight and germination rates of transgenic plants were higher than WT plants. The transgenic Arabidopsis expressing a CaDHN4 promoter displayed a more intense GUS staining than the normal growth conditions under treatment with hormones including ABA, methyl jasmonate (MeJA), and salicylic acid (SA). Our results suggest that CaDHN4 can protect against cold and salt stresses and decrease ABA sensitivity in Arabidopsis.

RESUMO

The identification of gene(s) that are involved in Cd accumulation/tolerance is vital in developing crop cultivars with low Cd accumulation. We developed a doubled haploid (DH) population that was derived from a cross of Suyinmai 2 (Cd-sensitive) × Weisuobuzhi (Cd-tolerant) to conduct quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping studies. We assessed chlorophyll content, traits that are associated with development, metal concentration, and antioxidative enzyme activity in DH population lines and parents under control and Cd stress conditions. A single QTL, designated as qShCd7H, was identified on chromosome 7H that was linked to shoot Cd concentration; qShCd7H explained 17% of the phenotypic variation. Comparative genomics, map-based cloning, and gene silencing were used in isolation, cloning, and functional characterization of the candidate gene. A novel gene HvPAA1, being related to shoot Cd concentration, was identified from qShCd7H. Sequence comparison indicated that HvPAA1 carried seven domains with an N-glycosylation motif. HvPAA1 is predominantly expressed in shoots. Subcellular localization verified that HvPAA1 is located in plasma membrane. The silencing of HvPAA1 resulted in growth inhibition, greater Cd accumulation, and a significant decrease in Cd tolerance. We conclude HvPAA1 is a novel plasma membrane-localized ATPase that contributes to Cd tolerance and accumulation in barley. The results provide us with new insights that may aid in the screening and development of Cd-tolerant and low-Cd-accumulation crops.

RESUMO

To investigate bioavailability of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and its contribution to nitrogen demand for Ulva prolifera, a cruise was conducted during a bloom of U. prolifera in Qingdao coastal waters, China, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and DON components were investigated. Uptakes of both DIN and DON by U. prolifera were synchronously measured onboard using stable isotope techniques. The contribution of DON to total dissolved N (TDN) was >50% and that of labile components (urea and to amino acids, AA) to DON exceeded 30%. Both DIN and DON were utilized by U. prolifera, which uptake NH4-N preferentially, then urea, NO3-N and AA in turn; whereas the ranking of turnover times from short to long was AA, NH4-N, urea and NO3-N. The high uptake rates and short turnover time of AA and urea indicated that DON may play an important role in the nutrition of U. prolifera.

RESUMO

We present a new feasible way to flatten the axial intensity oscillations for diffraction of a finite-sized Bessel beam, through designing a cardioid-like hole. The boundary formula of the cardioid-like hole is given analytically. Numerical results by the complete Rayleigh-Sommerfeld method reveal that the Bessel beam propagates stably in a considerably long axial range, after passing through the cardioid-like hole. Compared with the gradually absorbing apodization technique in previous papers, in this paper a hard truncation of the incident Bessel beam is employed at the cardioid-like hole edges. The proposed hard apodization technique takes two advantages in suppressing the axial intensity oscillations, i.e., easier implementation and higher accuracy. It is expected to have practical applications in laser machining, light sectioning, or optical trapping.

RESUMO

A new model, i.e., the decreasing thickness model (DTM) is proposed and employed for designing the cylindrical diffractive microlenses (CDMs). Focal performances of the designed CDMs are theoretically investigated by solving Maxwell's equations with the boundary element method. For comparison, the CDMs designed by the traditional equal thickness model (ETM) are also studied. Theoretical simulations demonstrate that focal performances of the designed CDMs are improved a lot via replacing the traditional ETM with the proposed DTM. Concretely, the focal efficiency is heightened and the focal spot size is shrunk. Experimental measurements verify the theoretical simulations well. Especially, the above-mentioned improvements become more prominent for the CDM with a higher numerical aperture.

RESUMO

Terahertz wave with modulation spectrum is valuable in many fields. Terahertz spectrum has been modulated with a pure-phase liquid crystal spatial light modulator by shaping the femtosecond laser beam profile. In the experiment, terahertz wave is generated by femtosecond laser pulses in mode of Optical Rectification and then its signals are detected by a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system. Phase maps obtained with the GS algorithm are loaded to get the shaped beam profile. Therefore, Terahertz spectrum has been successfully modulated by changing the detection range and beam profile parameters. Simultaneously, the simulations have been performed with the Fresnel diffraction, and they agree with the experimental results well. The results show that the modulation of the THz spectrum with this method is feasible.

RESUMO

The plasmonic resonance effect on metasurfaces generates an abrupt phase change. We employ this phase modulation mechanism to design the longitudinal field distribution of an ultrathin terahertz (THz) lens for achieving the axial long-focal-depth (LFD) property. Phase distributions of the designed lens are obtained by the Yang-Gu iterative amplitude-phase retrieval algorithm. By depositing a 100 nm gold film on a 500 µm silicon substrate and etching arrayed V-shaped air holes through the gold film, the designed ultrathin THz lens is fabricated by the micro photolithography technology. Experimental measurements have demonstrated its LFD property, which basically agree with the theoretical simulations. In addition, the designed THz lens possesses a good LFD property with a bandwidth of 200 GHz. It is expected that the designed ultrathin LFD THz lens should have wide potential applications in broadband THz imaging and THz communication systems.

RESUMO

Four kinds of organic solvents, including positive hexane, liquid paraffin, ethyl alcohol, and water, were measured by using terahertz time-domain reflection spectroscopy. According the experiment models, two methods can be used to extract optical parameters. Refractive index and absorption coefficient for these four solvents were extracted with two methods and were compared with the results obtained by transmission measurements, which verified that these methods are correct. This work solved the problem that the optical parameters of sample absorbing strongly terahertz cannot be measured and extracted by using terahertz time-domain transmission system.

RESUMO

Six kinds of non-polar organic solvents were measured by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), including positive hexane, cyclohexane, petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, carbon bisulfide, and toluene. These non-polar organic solvents are often used to solve other organics, so knowing the parameters of these non-polar organic solvents are important for studying optical properties of other organics in the frequency range of terahertz. The influence of the cuvette on THz signal was considered. Accurate optical parameters including refractive index and absorption coefficient were analyzed by the novel expression of the transfer function. In addition, according to the relationship among these absorption coefficients of five organic solvents, the polarity relationship can be determined.
