RESUMO

The reaction mechanism of the γ-carbon addition of enal to imine under oxidative N-heterocyclic carbene catalysis is studied experimentally. The oxidation, γ-carbon deprotonation, and nucleophilic addition of γ-carbon to imine were found to be facile steps. The results of our study also provide highly enantioselective access to tricyclic sulfonyl amides that exhibit interesting antimicrobial activities against X. oryzae, a bacterium that causes bacterial disease in rice growing.

RESUMO

The title compound, C13H15NO2, was obtained as a by-product in the Grignard reaction of malimide. The dihedral angle between the five-memebred ring (r.m.s. deviation = 0.005 Å) and the benzene ring is 67.20 (14)°. The benzene ring and the ethyl chain lie to the same side of the five-membered ring. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating C(6) chains propagating in [010].

RESUMO

We have developed a one-pot method for the direct intermolecular reductive hydroxyalkylation or alkylation of amines using lactones or esters as the hydroxyalkylating/alkylating reagents. The method is based on the in situ amidation of lactones/esters with DIBAL-H-amine complex (for primary amines) or DIBAL-H-amine hydrochloride salt complex (for secondary amines), followed by reduction of the amides with an excess of DIBAL-H. Different from the reduction of Weinreb amides with DIBAL-H where aldehydes are formed, the reduction of the in situ formed Weinreb amides yielded amines. Moreover, this method is not limited to Weinreb amides, instead, it also works for other amides in general. A plausible mechanism is suggested to account for the outcome of the reactions.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to investigate the apoptosis of human ovarian cancer cell lines, A2780 and CP70, induced by a novel curcumin analogue, B19. The proliferation of cells was detected with methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay and apoptosis was examined by flow cytometry. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were assessed by the fluorescent indicator DCF-DA. The protein expression of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathways, GRP78, XBP-1, ATF-4 and CHOP, was examined with Western blotting. A growth inhibitory effect was observed after treatment with B19 in a dose-dependent manner and with more potential than curcumin. At 20 µM, B19 induced significant apoptosis in CP70 cells. Furthermore, B19 induced the ER stress response, while curcumin had no effect on ER stress. These results suggest that B19 has more effective antitumor properties than curcumin, and is associated with the activation of ER stress and ROS in ovarian cancer cells.

RESUMO

We report a mild and environmentally benign method for the synthesis of tertiary amines using alcohols as the alkylating reagents. Not only secondary amines such as piperazines but also amino acids and amino alcohols can be N-alkylated selectively. For N,O-benzyl protected amino alcohols, both N,O-de-benzylation and N-methylation were achieved in one-pot.

RESUMO

Concentrations of 17 trace elements were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in Formosan squirrels (Callosciurus erythraeus) of Taiwan and Japan to document trace element pollution in Taiwan. High concentrations of elements used to produce semiconductors - Ga, As, Cd, In and Tl - were found in animals captured in Miaoli County, which is the nearest site to Hsinchu City, a chief city of Taiwan's semiconductor industry. Significant correlations between Ga, As, In and Tl were found in the kidney, liver, lung and muscle tissues of Taiwanese squirrels. Hierarchical cluster analysis indicated that Ga, As, In and Tl were of the same clade, indicating that Ga, As, In and Tl were discharged from an identical origin. Molar ratios of Ga/As concentration in lungs of animals captured in Miaoli resembled those of animals after intratracheal administration of particulate gallium arsenide (GaAs). This result might indicate that the higher concentrations of Ga and As in the specimens in Miaoli resulted from atmospheric exposure to GaAs.
