RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the impacts of angiotensin II (Ang II) on retinal artery changes in apolipoprotein E deficient (apoE-/-) mice. METHODS: apoE-/- male mice were infused by minipumps with Ang II at 1000 ng/kg·min (Ang II group) or saline (control group) for 28d. They were underwent ophthalmic fundus examination on day 0, 14, and 28 of infusion. Histopathologic examination, ribonucleic acid (RNA) sequencing and local Ang II measurement of retinas were conducted. RESULTS: Ophthalmic fundus examination showed Ang II infusion promoted the formation of retinal arterial aneurysm-like lesions on day 28. Optical coherence tomography revealed the ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness in the control group was significantly thinner than that in Ang II group (P<0.001). Hematoxylin-eosin staining demonstrated diffused swelling of GCIPL layer and its disordered structure in Ang II group. Transmission electron microscopy showed Ang II infusion caused aggravation of atherosclerotic lesions, including increased swelling, roughness, disorganization of the retinal vasculature, and vacuoles formation. RNA-sequencing and gene ontology enrichment analysis demonstrated that the structure and function of cellular membrane might be disturbed and visual function might be compromised by Ang II. The local level of Ang II was higher in Ang II infusion group but did not show significant differences compared to the control group (P=0.086). CONCLUSION: Ang II infusion promotes the formation of retinal arterial aneurysm-like lesions in apoE-/- mice, causing aggravation of atherosclerotic lesions, more severe disorganization of the retinal vasculature and disturbance of the cellular membrane.

RESUMO

Cationic exchange resins (CERs) were applied for purification and clarifying process of radioactive wastewater in nuclear industry, which was a kind of sulfur-containing organic material. Molten-salt oxidation (MSO) method can be applied for the treatment of spent CERs and the absorption of acid gas (such as SO2). The experiments about the molten salt destruction of the original resin and Cu ions doped resin were conducted. The transformation of organic sulfur in Cu ions doped resin was investigated. Compared with the original resin, the content of tail gas (such as CH4, C2H4, H2S and SO2) released from the decomposition of Cu ions doped resin was relatively high at 323-657 °C. Sulfur elements in the form of sulfates and copper sulfides were fixed in spent salt through XRD analysis. The XPS result revealed that the portion of functional sulfonic acid groups (-SO3H) in Cu ions doped resin was converted into sulfonyl bridges (-SO2-) at 325 °C. With the enhancement of temperature, sulfonyl bridges (-SO2-) were further decomposed to sulfoxides sulfur (-SO-) and organic sulfide sulfur. The destruction of thiophenic sulfur to H2S and CH4 was prompted by copper ions in copper sulfide. Sulfoxide were oxidized to the sulfone sulfur in molten salt. Sulfones sulfur consumed by reduction of Cu ions at 720 °C was more than it produced by oxidation of sulfoxide through XPS analysis, and the relative proportion of sulfone sulfur was 16.51%.

RESUMO

Molten salt oxidation (MSO) is an advanced method for waste resins treatment; nevertheless, the research about gas product variations of resins under different stoichiometric air feed coefficient (α) is rare. The optimal working condition of hazardous waste disposal is obtained through thermodynamic equilibrium calculation, and the method to improve the treatment efficiency is found to guide the optimization of the actual experiment. In this paper, Fact Sage was used to calculate the oxidation products of cation exchange resins (CERs) at different temperatures and α, focusing on the similarities and differences through the contents of CO, CH4, CO2, and SO2 during the oxidation of CERs, the MSO of CERs, and the theoretical calculation. The results indicated that the gas products of the calculation and reality of the oxidation process of CERs are quite different, while the CO contents of CERs during MSO are close to the calculated values. The main reason for this consequence is that in the oxidation process of CERs, the S in the sulfonic acid group will form thermally stable C-S with the styrene-divinylbenzene skeleton. Moreover, the introduction of carbonate can promote the destruction of C-S and absorb SO2 as sulfate, weakening the influence of C-S on the oxidation products of CERs. The gas chromatograph results indicated that the SO2 content is reduced from 0.66% in the process of CERs oxidation to 0.28% in MSO of CERs. When 1.25 times stoichiometric air feed coefficient is fed, the sulfate content in the carbonate is the highest at 900 °C, which is 23.4%.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Apnea caused by retrobulbar anesthesia is a very rare but severe complication during ophthalmic surgery. CASE SUMMARY: We report a rare case of apnea caused by retrobulbar anesthesia, and emergency resuscitation was used. A 74-year-old female patient was diagnosed with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in the right eye and planned to undergo vitrectomy under retrobulbar anesthesia. After the retrobulbar anesthesia in her right eye, she became unconscious and apneic. It was suggested that she had developed brainstem anesthesia. Assisted ventilation was initiated. Atropine 0.5 mg, epinephrine 1 mg, ephedrine 30 mg, and lipid emulsion were given. Five minutes later, her consciousness and breathing gradually returned, but with uncertain light perception in her right eye. Alprostadil 20 µg was given, and after 2 h her visual acuity resumed to the preoperative level. CONCLUSION: Brainstem anesthesia is a serious complication secondary to retrobulbar anesthesia. Medical staff should pay attention to the identification of brainstem anesthesia and be familiar with the emergency treatment for this complication.

RESUMO

After the treatment of liquid radioactive waste, there is a certain amount of Cs in the waste resin, and these Cs-doped resins are prone to volatilize during the thermal treatment process and cause radionuclide leakage. The molten salt oxidation (MSO) can effectively prevent the volatilization of toxic metal, especially the volatilization of Cs. Under nitrogen and air conditions, it is found that the oxidation behavior between Cs-doped and clean cation exchange resins (CERs) is quite different. In the presence of oxygen and molten carbonate salt, Cs2CO3 is generated by the destruction of functional groups in Cs-doped CERs. The Cs2CO3 in Na2CO3-K2CO3-Li2CO3 reacts with oxygen to form Li2O2, which reduces the content of S in residue from 26.33 to 13.38% in air conditions at 400 °C and promotes the generation of sulfate in the molten carbonate salt. The elements Cs and S in the Cs doped CERs spontaneously form thermally stable Cs2SO4 in the molten carbonate salt.

RESUMO

Purpose: To evaluate the performance of a deep learning (DL)-based artificial intelligence (AI) hierarchical diagnosis software, EyeWisdom V1 for diabetic retinopathy (DR). Materials and Methods: The prospective study was a multicenter, double-blind, and self-controlled clinical trial. Non-dilated posterior pole fundus images were evaluated by ophthalmologists and EyeWisdom V1, respectively. The diagnosis of manual grading was considered as the gold standard. Primary evaluation index (sensitivity and specificity) and secondary evaluation index like positive predictive values (PPV), negative predictive values (NPV), etc., were calculated to evaluate the performance of EyeWisdom V1. Results: A total of 1,089 fundus images from 630 patients were included, with a mean age of (56.52 ± 11.13) years. For any DR, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV were 98.23% (95% CI 96.93-99.08%), 74.45% (95% CI 69.95-78.60%), 86.38% (95% CI 83.76-88.72%), and 96.23% (95% CI 93.50-98.04%), respectively; For sight-threatening DR (STDR, severe non-proliferative DR or worse), the above indicators were 80.47% (95% CI 75.07-85.14%), 97.96% (95% CI 96.75-98.81%), 92.38% (95% CI 88.07-95.50%), and 94.23% (95% CI 92.46-95.68%); For referral DR (moderate non-proliferative DR or worse), the sensitivity and specificity were 92.96% (95% CI 90.66-94.84%) and 93.32% (95% CI 90.65-95.42%), with the PPV of 94.93% (95% CI 92.89-96.53%) and the NPV of 90.78% (95% CI 87.81-93.22%). The kappa score of EyeWisdom V1 was 0.860 (0.827-0.890) with the AUC of 0.958 for referral DR. Conclusion: The EyeWisdom V1 could provide reliable DR grading and referral recommendation based on the fundus images of diabetics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Salt stress is one of the most important abiotic stresses affecting the yield and quality of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). Thymol (a natural medicine) has been widely used in medical research because of its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. However, the influence of thymol on the root growth of tobacco is not fully elucidated. In this study, the regulatory effects of different concentrations of thymol were investigated. METHODOLOGY: Here, histochemical staining and biochemical methods, non-invasive micro-test technology (NMT), and qPCR assay were performed to investigate the effect of thymol and mechanism of it improving salinity tolerance in tobacco seedlings. RESULTS: In this study, our results showed that thymol rescued root growth from salt stress by ameliorating ROS accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and cell death. Furthermore, thymol enhanced contents of NO and GSH to repress ROS accumulation, further protecting the stability of the cell membrane. And, thymol improved Na+ efflux and the expression of SOS1, HKT1, and NHX1, thus protecting the stability of Na+ and K+. CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed the protecting effect of thymol in tobacco under salt stress, and we also identified the mechanism of it, involving dynamic regulation of antioxidant system and the maintenance of Na+ homeostasis. It can be a new method to improve salinity tolerance in plants.

RESUMO

AIM: To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of non-penetrating glaucoma surgery (NPGS) plus phacoemulsification (Phaco-NPGS) and NPGS-alone. METHODS: We systematically searched various databases and reviewed studies that had evaluated the effects of Phaco-NPGS or NPGS-alone for patients with glaucoma. Primary outcomes included postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) and the number of postoperative antiglaucoma medications. Secondary outcomes were the prevalence of complications, incidence of needling or goniopuncture, and surgical success rate. RESULTS: In total, 380 and 424 eyes in NPGS-alone and Phaco-NPGS groups respectively were included. Both postoperative IOP and number of medications were significantly lowered in the Phaco-NPGS group than that in the NPDS-alone group [weighted mean difference (WMD)=-1.12, 95% confidence interval (CI): -2.11 to -0.12, P=0.03; WMD=-0.31, 95%CI: -0.53 to -0.09, P=0.006]. Moreover, Phaco-NPGS had a significantly lower prevalence of complications and postoperative procedures compared to NPGS-alone, while no significant difference existed for surgical success. CONCLUSION: Phaco-NPGS superior to NPGS-alone in the reduction of IOP and medications. Phaco-NPGS can be recommended for glaucoma patients with coexisting cataracts owing to its superior efficacy, fewer complications, and postoperative procedures.

RESUMO

Three Zr(iv)-substituted polyoxometalate nanoclusters, H16(H2dap)4[{Zr2(OH)2(α-SiW10O38)}2{Zr2(OH)2(ß-SiW10O38)}2]·8H2O (1, dap = 1,3-diaminopropane), H17Na9[(Zr2(OH)2)2(Zr2BO(OH)4)2(ß-SiW10O38)4]·50H2O (2) and H20Na8[(Zr2BO(OH)4)2(Zr2B2O2(OH)5)2(ß-SiW10O38)4]·40H2O (3), were made by a hydrothermal reaction of trivacant [A-α-SiW9O34]10-, Zr4+ ions, and H3BO3 under different alkaline conditions. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed that they are ring-shaped polyoxotungstate aggregates built by Zr2(OH)2 ({Zr2}) clusters and two types of dilacunary α-/ß-SiW10O38 ({α-/ß-SiW10}) fragments for 1, {Zr2}, {ß-SiW10}, and Zr2BO(OH)4 ({Zr2B}) clusters for 2, and {ß-SiW10}, {Zr2B}, and Zr2B2O2(OH)5 ({Zr2B2}) clusters for 3, respectively, showing that the Zr-B-O clusters, {Zr2B} and {Zr2B2}, have been introduced to the lacunary sites of polyoxometalates for the first time. The electrochemistry and electrocatalytic properties of 2 were studied, and it exhibited effective catalytic activities for the reduction of H2O2, NO2-, and BrO3-. Moreover, the catalysis of 2 for the oxidation reactions of various thioethers was investigated, and it was found that 2 possessed high conversion and remarkable selectivity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Inositol supplementation has been linked to beneficial effects on reducing the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP); however, it's controversial. The meta-analysis aimed to check out the efficacy and safety of inositol supplementation in preterm infants for preventing ROP. METHODS: We conducted searches through PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ClinicalTrials.gov website and conference proceedings. Randomized controlled trials comparing inositol supplementation with placebo were included. Two independent reviewers performed screening, review, and extraction. Statistical analysis was performed using R Project. RESULTS: Six studies (1194 infants) were proved eligible. In comparison with placebo, inositol supplementation revealed no effect on the incidence of severe ROP (relative risk [RR] = 0.49, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.18-1.32; heterogeneity, P = .02; I2 = 66%; low quality of evidence [QOE]), mortality (RR = 1.25, 95% CI, 0.82-1.90; heterogeneity, P = .07; I2 = 51%; low QOE), all stages of ROP (RR = 0.98, 95% CI, 0.87-1.11; heterogeneity, P = .41; I2 = 0%; moderate QOE) and other adverse events. Sensitivity analysis showed an increased mortality in the inositol group (RR = 1.55, 95% CI, 1.14-2.11; heterogeneity, P = .30; I2 = 18%) after removing the study Hallman 1986, and meta-regression showed a significant association between publication year and efficacy of inositol compared with placebo (ß = 0.1241; 95% CI, 0.0417-0.0026; z = 2.9527; p = .0032). CONCLUSIONS: Based on current evidence, inositol supplementation showed no significant effect on preventing severe ROP, and exploratory sensitivity analysis showed a trend toward an increase on mortality.

RESUMO

On the basis of the synergistic strategy of lacunary polyoxometalate structure-directing function and chiral ligand inducting role, two pairs of enantiomeric polyoxotungstates, (NH4)4(TMA)4[Zr4(µ3-O)2(l-/d-mal)2(B-α-HSiW10O37)2] (TMA = tetramethylammonium, mal = malate (C4H5O5); l-mal for 1a, d-mal for 1b) and (NH4)4(TMA)4[Zr4(µ3-O)2(l-/d-mal)2(B-α-PW10O37)2] (l-mal for 2a, d-mal for 2b), and a mesomeric polyoxotungstate, (NH4)3Na2K5[Zr4(µ3-O)2(l-mal)(d-mal)(B-α-SiW10O37)2] (3), were hydrothermally synthesized. 1a, 2a and 1b, 2b respectively exhibit 1-D 21 right- and left-hand helical chains formed by hydrogen-bonding interactions, and 3 forms a 3-D (3,10)-connected framework by Na+/K+ ions with {418.624.83}{43}2 topology. These homochiral compounds represent the first examples of enantiomerically pure ZrIV-substituted Keggin POMs. In this system, {Zr4(µ3-O)2(l-/d-mal)2} clusters transfer chirality from d- or l-mal to Keggin polyoxotungstate dimeric clusters, which was demonstrated by structural comparison between the homochiral architecture and mesomer as well as circular dichroism spectra of enantiomers. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra reveal that 1-3 are potential semiconductor materials. In addition, 1 and 2 exhibit second harmonic generation response with their response intensities of 0.8 times that of KDP.

RESUMO

Under hydrothermal conditions, three new acetate-functionalized zirconium-substituted polyoxometalates, H4Na2[Na6(H2O)22][Zr4(µ3-O)2(OH)2(OAc)2(α-GeW10O37)2]·32H2O (1), H8K3Na5[Zr6(µ3-O)3(OH)3(OAc)(H2O)(ß-GeW10O37)3]·20H2O (2), H6K4Na12[{Zr5(µ3-OH)4(OH)2}@{Zr2(OAc)2(α-GeW10O38)2}2]·22H2O (3), were synthesized and characterized. In 1, the sandwiched dimer [Zr4(µ3-O)2(OH)2(OAc)2(α-GeW10O37)2]12- was linked to a hexameric [Na6(H2O)22]6+ cluster to form a 1D chain. In 2, the trimer was constructed from three [ß2-GeW10O37]10- units and a new [Zr6O3(OH)3(OAc)(H2O)]14+ cluster. In 3, the tetramer was built by two novel sandwich-type dimers [Zr2(OAc)2(α2-GeW10O38)2]18- and one unique [Zr5(µ3-OH)4(OH)2]14+ core in an approximately orthogonal fashion, showing a staggered tetrahedral polyanion. Also, the electrochemistry and electrocatalytic properties of 3 were studied, exhibiting good catalytic activities toward the reduction of H2O2, BrO3-, and NO2-.

RESUMO

A novel zirconium(IV)-substituted tetramer polyoxotungstate, H6K4Na16[Zr4(ß-GeW10O38)2(A-α-PW9O34)2]·37H2O, was synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic P2/n space group. The most remarkable feature is that the centrosymmetric Zr-based polyoxotungstate tetramer consists of dilacunary Keggin-type germanotungstate and trilacunary Keggin-type phosphotungstate units that are linked by ZrIV ions.

RESUMO

A new tetra-Zr-substituted tungstophosphate (TP), [H2N(CH3)2]6Na6H8{Zr2[SbP2W4(OH)2O21][α2-PW10O38]}2·50H2O (1), has been made by the hydrothermal reaction of the [B-α-SbW9O33]9- building block with Zr4+ cations and PO43- anions in the presence of dimethylamine hydrochloride and NaOAc-HOAc (pH = 4.8), and further characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), 31P NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 is a toroidal structure formed by two divacant [α2-PW10O38]11- units and two [SbP2W4(OH)2O21]7- fragments linked by four Zr4+ cations. Note that the TP is reassembled with tetrahedral PO4 replacing the triangular pyramidal SbO3 in the [B-α-SbW9O33]9- precursor. In addition, the pendant SbO3 derives from the dissociation of the [B-α-SbW9O33]9- precursor. Furthermore, the electrochemical properties of 1 have been studied in Na2SO4 + H2SO4 supporting electrolyte (0.5 mol L-1), and indicate that 1 exhibits apparent catalytic activity toward H2O2 and BrO3- reduction. The 31P NMR spectrum of 1 exhibits three signals with approximately proportional intensities, which is consistent with the solid-state structure.

RESUMO

Luminescent organogold(III) complex AuIII with highly emissive triplet excited state was encapsulated in two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different pore sizes and structures (MOF1 and ZJU-28). Compared with the AuIII complex in solution, the resultant composites AuIII @MOF1 and AuIII @ZJU-28 exhibit enhanced emission intensity, lifetime, and quantum yield. Under irradiation, AuIII @MOFs are efficient, selective, and recyclable catalysts for light-induced aerobic C-N bond formation. When used as a heterogeneous catalyst for oxidizing secondary amines to the corresponding imines, AuIII @ZJU-28 achieved high TONs of 876-1548, which are about 2.8-3.5 times higher than that of the homogenous AuIII complex. In addition, different selectivities in oxidizing mixed substrates is realized by means of different host MOFs, and thus encapsulating the AuIII complex in an appropriate MOF allowed the desired product to be obtained. Inherent shortcomings of homogeneous catalysts in cyclic use are also overcome by using composite catalysts, and high conversion of the AuIII @ZJU-28 catalyst was still observed after ten cycles.

RESUMO

Three inorganic-organic hybrid borates, M(1,4-dab)[B5O7(OH)3] [M = Zn (1), Cd (2), 1,4-dab = 1,4-diaminobutane)] and Co(1,3-dap)[B4O7] (3, 1,3-dap = 1,3-diaminopropane), which integrated characteristics of 1D coordination polymers and 1D/3D inorganic boron oxides have been obtained under solvothermal conditions. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and crystallize in a centrosymmetric space group P21/c; the 3D achiral structures of 1 and 2 consist of the nonhelical Zn/Cd-1,4-dap coordination polymers and 1D B-O chains. Compound 3 crystallizes in a chiral space group P43212; the helical Co-1,3-dap coordination polymer chains are entrained within a 3D B-O network and finally form the chiral framework. Compounds 1-3 represent good examples of using coordination polymers to construct mixed-motif inorganic-organic hybrid borates. Compounds 1 and 2 display blue luminescence when excited with UV light.

RESUMO

Rice blast is a major destructive fungal disease that poses a serious threat to rice production and the improvement of blast resistance is critical to rice breeding. The antimicrobial peptide MSI-99 has been suggested as an antimicrobial peptide conferring resistance to bacterial and fungal diseases. Here, a vector harboring the MSI-99 gene was constructed and introduced into the tobacco chloroplast genome via particle bombardment. Transformed plants were obtained and verified to be homoplastomic by PCR and Southern hybridization. In planta assays demonstrated that the transgenic tobacco plants displayed an enhanced resistance to the fungal disease. The evaluation of the antimicrobial activity revealed that the crude protein extracts from the transgenic plants manifested an antimicrobial activity against E. coli, even after incubation at 120 °C for 20 min, indicating significant heat stability of MSI-99. More importantly, the MSI-99-containing protein extracts were firstly proved in vitro and in vivo to display significant suppressive effects on two rice blast isolates. These findings provide a strong basis for the development of new biopesticides to combat rice blast.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The identification of cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL) biomarkers may serve as a predictor of disease progression and treatment response. The aim of this study was to map potential biomarkers in CTCL plasma. DESIGN AND METHODS: Plasma metabolic perturbations between CTCL cases and healthy individuals were investigated using metabolomics and ultrahigh performance liquid chromatographyquadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF/MS). RESULTS: Principal component analysis (PCA) of the spectra showed clear metabolic changes between the two groups. Thirty six potential biomarkers associated with CTCL were found. CONCLUSIONS: Based on PCA, several biomarkers were determined and further identified by LC/MS/MS analysis. All of these could be potential early markers of CTCL. In addition, we established that heparin as anticoagulant has better pre-treatment results than EDTA with the UHPLC-QTOF/MS approach.

RESUMO

We present a novel low-cost and batch fabrication method to fabricate a Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity with a micromechanical wet-etching process, through which FP cavities can be achieved with a cavity length of from several micrometers to tens of micrometers. The parallelism of mirror elements can be well achieved without electrostatic control. The quality of an etched surface can be greatly improved by the oxidation polish process. FP cavities with a finesse of approximately 50 are achieved. Analysis shows that the effective finesse is dominated mainly by the quality of the etched surface.
