RESUMO

Astragalus polysaccharide-containing 3D-printed scaffold shows great potential in traumatic skin repair. This study aimed to investigate its repairing effect and to combine it with proteomic technology to deeply resolve the related protein expression changes. Thirty SD rats were divided randomly into three groups (n = 10 per group): the sham-operated group, the model group and the scaffold group. Subsequently, we conducted a comparative analysis on trauma blood perfusion, trauma healing rate, histological changes, the expression of the YAP/TAZ signalling pathway and angiogenesis-related factors. Additionally, neonatal skin tissues were collected for proteomic analysis. The blood perfusion volume and wound healing recovery in the scaffold group were better than that in the model group (p < 0.05). The protein expression of STAT3, YAP, TAZ and expression of vascular-related factor A (VEGFA) in the scaffold group was higher than that in the model group (p < 0.05). Proteomic analysis showed that there were 207 differential proteins common to the three groups. Mitochondrial function, immune response, redox response, extracellular gap and ATP metabolic process were the main groups of differential protein changes. Oxidative phosphorylation, metabolic pathway, carbon metabolism, calcium signalling pathway, etc. were the main differential metabolic pathway change groups. Astragalus polysaccharide-containing 3D-printed scaffold had certain reversals of protein disorder. The Astragalus polysaccharide-containing 3D-printed scaffold may promote the VEGFs by activating the YAP/TAZ signalling pathway with the help of STAT3 into the nucleus, accelerating early angiogenesis of the trauma, correcting the protein disorder of the trauma and ultimately realizing the repair of the wound.

PURPOSES: Mono-focal papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients with encapsulated tumor have traditionally been considered as low central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) risk subgroup. The aim of the research was to quantitatively predict the probability of CLNM for mono-focal PTC patients with encapsulated tumor as confirmed by preoperative ultrasound based on pre- and post-operative indexes respectively to guide the selection of prophylactic central lymph node dissection (CLND) and follow-up strategies. METHODS: A total of 1014 mono-focal PTC patients with encapsulated tumor as confirmed by preoperative ultrasound from three medical centers were retrospectively analyzed, with 534 patients served as Training group and 480 patients as Validation group. RESULTS: Multivariate analyses showed that age < 55 years old, male, clinical maximum tumor diameter (cMTD) > 0.5 cm, pathological maximum tumor diameter (pMTD) > 0.5 cm, and the presence of microscopic thyroid capsular invasion (mTCI) were independent CLNM risk factors. These were used to construct two nomograms that can effectively predict the central neck involvement in mono-focal PTC patients with encapsulated tumor. The first nomogram (pre-model) provides quantitative assessment on the necessity of prophylactic CLND, while the second nomogram (post-model) informs postoperative follow-up strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Meticulous and comprehensive stratification flow charts that quantitatively evaluate the risk of central lymph node metastasis both pre- and post-operatively were constructed for mono-focal PTC patients with encapsulated tumor as confirmed by preoperative ultrasound, which may benefit both clinical decision-making of prophylactic CLND and postoperative follow-up strategies for the management of neck regions.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence indicating that both lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] and fibrinogen (FIB) are associated with mortality, However, the impact of their combination on mortality has not been determined. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the association between the combination of Lp(a) and FIB with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled 4,730 participants from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The exposure variables included Lp(a), FIB and their combination, while the outcome variables consisted of all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer-related mortality. Multivariate COX regression, subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were used to investigate the association between Lp(a), FIB and their combination with all-cause, CVD and cancer-related mortality. RESULTS: Over a median follow-up period of 235 months, 2,668 individuals died, including 1,051 deaths attributed to CVD and 549 deaths due to cancer. Multivariate Cox regression analyses revealed independent associations between both Lp(a) and FIB with all-cause, CVD, and cancer-related mortality. Compared to participants in the 1st to 50th percentiles of both Lp(a) and FIB, those in the 90th to 100th percentiles exhibited multivariable adjusted HRs of 1.813 (95% CI: 1.419-2.317, P < 0.001), 2.147 (95% CI: 1.483-3.109, P < 0.001) and 2.355 (95% CI: 1.396, 3.973, P = 0.001) for all-cause, CVD and cancer-related mortality, respectively. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses did not substantially attenuate the association between the combination of high Lp(a) and high FIB with the risk of all-cause and CVD-related mortality. Additionally, the RCS analysis showed that the relationship between Lp(a) and the risk of all-cause and cancer-related mortality, as well as the relationship between FIB and the risk of cancer-related mortality, were linear (P for nonlinearity > 0.05). Conversely, the relationship between Lp(a) and the risk of CVD-related mortality, as well as the relationship between FIB and the risk of all-cause and CVD-related mortality, were nonlinear (P for nonlinearity < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: High levels of Lp(a) and FIB together conferred a greater risk of mortality from all-cause, CVD and cancer.

AIMS: To test the association of C-reactive protein (CRP) with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in people with gout. METHODS: This cohort study included 502 participants with gout from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Multivariate Cox regression analysis, subgroup analysis, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses were utilized to examine the association of CRP levels with all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality. RESULTS: After adjusting for multiple variables, Cox regression analysis showed that compared with individuals in the lowest tertile of CRP levels, those in the middle and highest tertiles experienced increases in all-cause mortality risk of 74.2% and 149.7%, respectively. Similarly, the cancer mortality risk for individuals in the highest tertile of CRP levels increased by 283.9%. In addition, for each standard deviation increase in CRP, the risks of all-cause and cancer mortality increased by 25.9% and 35.4%, respectively (P < 0.05). Subgroup analyses demonstrated that the association between CRP levels and all-cause mortality remained significant across subgroups of age (≤ 60 and > 60 years), gender (male), presence or absence of hypertension, non-diabetes, cardiovascular disease, non-cardiovascular disease and non-cancer. Furthermore, the association with cancer mortality was significant in subgroups including males, those without hypertension and cancer, and those with or without diabetes. However, the association with cardiovascular mortality was only significant in the non-hypertension subgroup (P < 0.05). Nonlinear association of CRP with all-cause mortality and linear association with cancer mortality were also confirmed (P for nonlinearity = 0.008 and 0.135, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: CRP levels were associated with increased all-cause and cancer mortality among individuals with gout.

Selective breeding for production traits has yielded relatively rapid successes with high-fecundity aquaculture species. Discovering the genetic changes associated with selection is an important goal for understanding adaptation and can also facilitate better predictions about the likely fitness of selected strains if they escape aquaculture farms. Here, we hypothesize domestication as a genetic change induced by inadvertent selection in culture. Our premise is that standardized culture protocols generate parallel domestication effects across independent strains. Using eastern oyster as a model and a newly developed 600K SNP array, this study tested for parallel domestication effects in multiple independent selection lines compared with their progenitor wild populations. A single contrast was made between pooled selected strains (1-17 generations in culture) and all wild progenitor samples combined. Population structure analysis indicated rank order levels of differentiation as [wild - wild] < [wild - cultured] < [cultured - cultured]. A genome scan for parallel adaptation to the captive environment applied two methodologically distinct outlier tests to the wild versus selected strain contrast and identified a total of 1174 candidate SNPs. Contrasting wild versus selected strains revealed the early evolutionary consequences of domestication in terms of genomic differentiation, standing genetic diversity, effective population size, relatedness, runs of homozygosity profiles, and genome-wide linkage disequilibrium patterns. Random Forest was used to identify 37 outlier SNPs that had the greatest discriminatory power between bulked wild and selected oysters. The outlier SNPs were in genes enriched for cytoskeletal functions, hinting at possible traits under inadvertent selection during larval culture or pediveliger setting at high density. This study documents rapid genomic changes stemming from hatchery-based cultivation of eastern oysters, identifies candidate loci responding to domestication in parallel among independent aquaculture strains, and provides potentially useful genomic resources for monitoring interbreeding between farm and wild oysters.

Objective: Although lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) are closely associated with the mortality of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), their synergistic effect on the risk of death remains unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the combined effect of Lp(a) and Hs-CRP on the incidence of all-cause and cardiovascular death in AMI patients. Methods: A comprehensive cohort study enrolled 912 AMI patients, categorizing them into four groups based on Lp(a) and Hs-CRP levels: Group 1 [Lp(a) < 30 mg/dL & Hs-CRP < 2 mg/L], Group 2 [Lp(a) < 30 mg/dL & Hs-CRP ≥ 2 mg/L], Group 3 [Lp(a) ≥ 30 mg/dL & Hs-CRP < 2 mg/L], and Group 4 [Lp(a) ≥ 30 mg/dL & Hs-CRP ≥ 2 mg/L]. Cox regression analysis, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and sensitivity analysis were employed to determine the combined effects of Lp(a) and Hs-CRP on the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular death. Results: Over a median observation period of 38.98 months, 217 patients passed away, with 137 deaths attributed to cardiovascular causes. The multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that in the comprehensively adjusted Model 3, only Lp(a) and the combination of Lp(a) and Hs-CRP exhibited a strong association with cardiovascular death risk. Specifically, for Lp(a) levels ≥ 30 mg/dL compared to < 30 mg/dL, the hazard ratio (HR) was 2.434 with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.653-3.583 (P < 0.001); for log10(Lp(a)), the HR was 2.630 with a 95% CI of 1.530-4.523 (P < 0.001); for Group 4 versus Group 1, the HR was 2.346 with a 95% CI of 1.054-5.220 (P = 0.037); and for Group 4 versus Groups 1 + 2 + 3, the HR was 1.878 with a 95% CI of 1.284-2.748 (P = 0.001). Sensitivity analysis indicated that the synergy between Lp(a) and Hs-CRP continued to be independently associated with the risk of cardiovascular death. For Group 3 versus Group 1, the HR was 3.353 with a 95% CI of 1.133-9.917 (P = 0.029); for Group 4 versus Group 1, the HR was 3.710 with a 95% CI of 1.466-9.392 (P = 0.006); and for Group 4 versus Groups 1 + 2 + 3, the HR was 2.433 with a 95% CI of 1.620-3.656 (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Compared to elevated levels of either Lp(a) or Hs-CRP alone, the concurrent high levels of both significantly increased the risk of cardiovascular death in patients with AMI, underscoring the importance of considering their combined effects in the prognostic management of AMI patients.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) presents challenges in early diagnosis and effective treatment. In this study, we aimed to establish a prognostic model based on G2M checkpoint-related genes and identify associated clusters in ccRCC through clinical bioinformatic analysis and experimental validation. Utilizing a single-cell RNA dataset (GSE159115) and bulk-sequencing data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, we analyzed the G2M checkpoint pathway in ccRCC. Differential expression analysis identified 45 genes associated with the G2M checkpoint, leading to the construction of a predictive model with four key genes (E2F2, GTSE1, RAD54L, and UBE2C). The model demonstrated reliable predictive ability for 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival, with AUC values of 0.794, 0.790, and 0.794, respectively. Patients in the high-risk group exhibited a worse prognosis, accompanied by significant differences in immune cell infiltration, immune function, TIDE and IPS scores, and drug sensitivities. Two clusters of ccRCC were identified using the "ConsensusClusterPlus" package, cluster 1 exhibited a worse survival rate and was resistant to chemotherapeutic drugs of Axitinib, Erlotinib, Pazopanib, Sunitinib, and Temsirolimus, but not Sorafenib. Targeted experiments on RAD54L, a gene involved in DNA repair processes, revealed its crucial role in inhibiting proliferation, invasion, and migration in 786-O cells. In conclusion, our study offers valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying ccRCC, identifying potential prognostic genes and molecular subtypes associated with the G2M checkpoint. These findings hold promise for guiding personalized treatment strategies in the management of ccRCC.

The study aimed to explore the association between five heavy metals exposure (Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Manganese, and Selenium) and mortality [all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer-related]. We integrated the data into the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2018 years. A total of 16,092 participants were recruited. The link between heavy metals exposure and mortality was analyzed by constructing a restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve, Cox proportional hazard regression model, and subgroup analysis. The RCS curve was used to show a positive linear relationship between Cadmium, Lead, and all-cause mortality. In contrast, there was a negative linear correlation between Mercury and all-cause mortality. Additionally, Manganese and Selenium also had a J-shaped and L-shaped link with all-cause mortality. The positive linear, positive linear, negative liner, J-shaped, and L-shaped relationships were observed for Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Manganese, and Selenium and CVD mortality, respectively. Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, and Selenium were observed to exhibit positive linear, U-shaped, negative linear, and L-shaped relationships with cancer-related mortality, respectively. There was an increase and then a decrease in the link between Manganese and cancer-related morality. This study revealed the correlation between the content of different elements and different types of mortality in the U.S. general population.

BACKGROUND: An inertial measurement unit is small and lightweight, allowing patient measurements without physical constraints. This study aimed to determine the differences in kinematic parameters during gait using an insole with a single inertial measurement unit in healthy controls and on both sides in patients with knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: Twenty patients with knee osteoarthritis and 13 age-matched controls were included in this study. The participants walked at a self-selected speed and foot kinematics were measured during gait using an insole with a single inertial measurement unit. The right side of the healthy controls and both the affected and contralateral sides of patients with KOA were analyzed separately. FINDINGS: The foot extension angular velocity at toe-off was significantly reduced on the affected side than on the contralateral side (P < 0.001) and in healthy controls (P < 0.001). During the swing phase, foot posterior-anterior acceleration was significantly lower on the affected side than on the healthy controls (P = 0.005). Furthermore, despite a decrease in walking speed, foot superior-inferior acceleration at initial contact in patients was significantly lower on the contralateral side than in healthy controls (P = 0.0167), but not on the affected side (P = 0.344). INTERPRETATION: An insole with a single inertial measurement unit can detect differences in foot kinematics during gait between healthy controls and patients with knee osteoarthritis. Our findings indicate that patients with knee osteoarthritis exhibit dysfunction of push-off at toe-off and shock absorption at initial contact on the affected side.

Accurately evaluating drought impact on agriculture poses a challenge to regional food security, particularly in compound drought (i.e., meteorological and agricultural drought co-occurring) scenarios. This study presents a novel approach utilizing Vine copula for coupling spatiotemporal features to evaluate drought propagation. Three-dimensional clustering method was employed to identify meteorological and agricultural drought events, which excelled in capturing dynamic evolution characteristics (duration, area, severity, etc.) as well as integrating them into comprehensive meteorological drought intensity (IMD) and agricultural drought intensity (IAD). Through spatiotemporal matching, compound drought events were extracted from the meteorological-agricultural drought event pairs. From compound drought perspective, compound duration (CD) and compound area (CA) were devised to characterize drought propagation potential across time and space. Finally, the Vine copula method was employed to model the interdependence between four key coupling features, namely IMD, IAD, CD, and CA, and evaluate the probability of triggering agricultural drought with different intensity levels. Results showed that CD and CA can respectively characterize the temporal and spatial accumulation scale of drought propagation. At a certain IMD level, CD significantly influences the propagation probability (i.e., "stratification" phenomenon), while CA increases the probability proportionally. Probability evaluation lacking spatiotemporal information may underestimate the likelihood of drought propagation characterized by "low-IMD" but "long-CD" or "large-CA". The four-dimensional Vine copula structure can effectively couple dependence relationships of compound drought characteristics, and exhibits reliable robustness. This research provides stakeholders accurate probabilistic evaluation under compound drought scenarios, offering new insight into drought propagation.

Bicyclol, an innovative hepatoprotective drug, was approved by the Chinese National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in 2001 to treat Hepatitis B and drug-induced liver injury. Two active metabolites of bicyclol have been identified as M2 and M3. To evaluate the impact on drug safety and efficacy of possible drug-drug interactions (DDIs) associated with these metabolites, a sufficient quantity of these metabolites is required. Herein, we report a concise novel route for the synthesis of M2 and M3 using the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling as the key step. Furthermore, we complete the gram-scale syntheses of M2 and M3.

AIMS: To investigate the dose-response association between physical activity and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and the effects of replacing sedentary behavior with physical activity. METHODS: 4808 adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus were included in NHANES 2007-2018. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Isotemporal substitution analyses were further to determine the possible benefit of replacing sedentary time. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 6.58 years, 902 deaths occurred, including 290 deaths from cardiovascular disease. Compared with the inactive group, the low-active and high-active groups were associated with declined risks of all-cause mortality [HRs (95% CIs) 0.64 (0.50, 0.83); 0.60 (0.50, 0.73), respectively] and cardiovascular mortality [0.50 (0.29, 0.88); 0.54 (0.39, 0.76)), respectively]. Dose-response analysis showed a significant U-shaped curve between physical activity and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Replacing 30 min/day of sedentary time with physical activity was substantially linked to a reduced risk of 8-32% mortality. CONCLUSION: A high level of PA of 40.52 and 31.66 MET-h/week was respectively related to the lowest risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Replacing sedentary time with physical activity could benefit the type 2 diabetes mellitus population.

There is very limited evidence linking glyphosate exposure to bone mineral density in adults aged 20 to 59 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the correlation between urinary glyphosate concentrations and total bone mineral density (BMD) in adults aged 20 to 59 years. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the 2013 to 2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which included 594 men (mean age 39.1 years) and 610 women (mean age 40.0 years). In our study, we utilized a weighted multiple regression equation model to investigate the potential correlation between urinary glyphosate concentration and total BMD. Additionally, we conducted a stratified analysis to differentiate between various special populations. Our findings revealed a significant negative association between urinary glyphosate concentration and total BMD across 3 different regression models (Model 1, ß [95% CI]: -0.0160 [-0.0200, -0.0120]; Model 2, ß [95% CI]: -0.0135 [-0.0172, -0.0098]; Model 3, ß [95% CI]: -0.0141 [-0.0178, -0.0104]). However, after stratifying by gender, age, and race, we observed varying conclusions. This study found that urinary glyphosate concentration was negatively associated with total BMD in both men and women when stratified by sex. Additionally, when stratified by age, the negative association was more significant in the 20 to 29 and 50 to 59 year age groups. When stratified by race, a significant negative association was found in races other than Hispanic. Therefore, the impact of glyphosate exposure on BMD should attract more people's attention.

BACKGROUND: Numerous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported the benefits of external diaphragm pacing combined with conventional rehabilitation therapies (EDP-CRTs) on pulmonary function and exercise capacity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, evidence-based regarding its effects remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of EDP-CRTs versus CRTs on patients with COPD. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES AND METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis, searching PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, China Biology Medicine Disc, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wan-Fang Database, and Chinese Scientific Journal Database from inception to 10 September 2023. RCTs investigating the effects of EDP-CRTs versus CRTs on COPD patients were included. The primary outcome was pulmonary function, including forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), the percentage of predicted values of FEV1 (FEV1%pred), and FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC)%. Secondary outcomes included arterial blood gas analysis [the partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2) and the partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2)]; dyspnea [modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale (mMRC)]; exercise capacity [6-min walking distance (6MWD)]; and quality of life [COPD assessment test (CAT)]. RevMan 5.3 software was used for meta-analysis. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2.0). The certainty of the evidence was evaluated with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation system. RESULTS: In total, 13 studies/981 participants were included. The pooled results revealed significant benefits of EDP-CRTs versus CRTs on the FEV1 [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 1.07, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.58-1.56], FEV1%pred [weighted mean difference (WMD) = 6.67, 95% CI = 5.69-7.64], the FEV1/FVC% (SMD = 1.24, 95% CI = 0.48-2.00), PaO2 (SMD = 1.29, 95% CI = 0.74-1.84), PaCO2 (SMD = -1.88, 95% CI = -2.71 to -1.04), mMRC (WMD = -0.55, 95% CI = -0.65 to -0.45), 6MWD (SMD = 1.63, 95% CI = 0.85-2.42), and CAT (WMD = -1.75, 95% CI = -3.16 to -0.35), respectively. Planned subgroup analysis suggested that EDP-CRTs had a better effect on FEV1, FEV1/FVC%, 6MWD, and CAT in the duration of 2-4 weeks. CONCLUSION: EDP-CRTs have better effects on pulmonary function, PaCO2, dyspnea, exercise capacity, and quality of life in COPD patients than CRTs, and the duration to achieve the most effective treatment is 2-4 weeks. A plant factory with artificial lighting (PFAL) usually uses top lighting for cultivation. The light from the upper part of the canopy cannot penetrate the entire lettuce canopy, however, resulting in uneven vertical spatial light in the canopy, and accelerating the senescence of both the bottom and side leaves of the plant canopy. Therefore, in this study, the performance of lettuce in hydroponics was investigated upon supplemental side lighting with different spectral LEDs in a PFAL. A set of short-term side lighting treatments, including no side lamps (CK), red (R), blue (B), red + blue (RB), and red + blue + green (RGB) LED lamps (150 µmol·m-2·s-1, respectively), was employed for an additional 2 h per day after normal top lighting for 6 days before harvest. The results showed that the lettuce canopy was relatively loose and had a large crown size under side lighting compared with CK. Side lighting, irrespective of spectral qualities, significantly increased the fresh weight, and the R, B, RB, and RGB treatments increased the shoot fresh weight of lettuce plants by 34%, 19%, 31%, and 34%, and increased the fresh weight of leaf layer 2 by 50%, 17%, 44%, and 48%, respectively. The side lighting of different spectral qualities had a significant impact on the nutritional quality of the first row of lettuce at the edge of the top lighting illuminated area. Treatment B significantly promoted the chlorophyll content of leaf layer 3; the soluble sugar contents from leaf layer 1, 2, and 3; the starch contents in leaf layers 2 and 3; and the content of phenolics in the leaf layers 3; and significantly reduced the nitrate content in leaf layers 2 and 3. RGB significantly increased soluble sugar content by 91%, and the starch content in leaf layer 1, as well as the leaf chlorophyll and flavonoid content of leaf layer 3, while R had opposite effect completely. RB significantly increased the leaf chlorophyll content of leaf layer 3 and the nitrate content in leaf layer 1, but the overall effect was lower than that of RGB. In summary, side lighting of any type could effectively improve lettuce yield, solve the problem of inconsistent lettuce plant size caused by the edge effect of top lighting, and affect the nutritional quality of lettuce. B and RGB performed best. There was spatial response diversity of lettuce plants to side lighting spectral qualities.

Background: The association between waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) with hypertension has not been adequately explained, so in this study we sought to clarify the predictive role of WHtR on the incidence of hypertension as well as the potential nonlinear associations in the general population. Methods: In this large prospective cohort study, a total of 4,458 individuals from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) were included in the analysis. Multivariate Cox regression analyses, subgroup analyses, receiver operator characteristic (ROC) and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses were used to examine the association of WHtR with the risk of new-onset hypertension. Results: Hypertension occurred in 32.8% of participants during the maximum six-year follow-up period. Compared with the group with lower WHtR, the group with higher WHtR had a higher incidence of hypertension (p < 0.001). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the risk of hypertension was 1.45 times higher in the high WHtR group than in the low WHtR group, and that the risk of hypertension increased by 30.4% for every 0.1 unit increase in WHtR (p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses also validated the stratified associations between WHtR and the risk of new-onset hypertension in most subgroups (p < 0.05). ROC analyses also revealed that WHtR was superior to body mass index in predicting new-onset hypertension (AUC: 0.626 vs. 0.607, p = 0.009). Further RCS analysis detected a nonlinear association between WHtR and risk of new-onset hypertension (P for nonlinearity <0.001). Conclusion: WHtR was nonlinearly associated with the risk of new-onset hypertension in the general population.

Background and aims: Increasing evidence supports a causal relationship between lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, yet its association with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) assessed by electrocardiogram (ECG) remains unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between Lp(a) and LVH assessed by ECG in general population. Methods and results: In this cross-sectional study, we screened 4,052 adults from the participants of the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for analysis. Lp(a) was regarded as an exposure variable. LVH defined by the left ventricular mass index estimated from ECG was considered as an outcome variable. Multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were used to assess the relationship between Lp(a) and LVH. Individuals with LVH had higher Lp(a) compared to individuals without LVH (P< 0.001). In the fully adjusted model, Lp(a) was strongly associated with LVH when as a continuous variable (per 1-unit increment, OR: 1.366, 95% CI: 1.043-1.789, P = 0.024), and higher Lp(a) remained independently associated with a higher risk of LVH when participants were divided into four groups according to quartiles of Lp(a) (Q4 vs Q1, OR: 1.508, 95% CI: 1.185-1.918, P = 0.001). And in subgroup analysis, this association remained significant among participants< 60 years, ≥ 60 years, male, with body mass index< 30 kg/m2, with hypertension and without diabetes (P< 0.05). In addition, we did not observe a nonlinear and threshold effect of Lp(a) with LVH in the RCS analysis (P for nonlinearity = 0.113). Conclusion: Lp(a) was closely associated with LVH assessed by ECG in general population.

BACKGROUND: Physical exercise training is the central component of pulmonary rehabilitation. This study aimed to further investigate the rehabilitative effects of pulmonary-based Qigong exercise (PQE) in stable patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: In this randomized, assessor-blinded clinical trial, 44 participants with stable COPD were randomly assigned to 2 groups in a 1:1 ratio. Participants in the control group received usual care for 3 months. Participants in the intervention group received usual care combined with PQE (60 min each time, 2 times per day, 7 days per week, for 3 months). The outcome included exercise capacity, lung function test, skeletal muscle strength, dyspnea, and quality of life were measured before and after intervention. RESULTS: A total of 37 participants completed the trial. Compared to the control group, after 3 months of PQE, the mean change in exercise capacity, skeletal muscle strength, and quality of life were statistically significant (P < 0.05, for each), but no significant differences were observed in lung function (except for the forced expiratory volume in one second) and dyspnea (P > 0.05, for each). CONCLUSION: The findings of study suggest that the proposed program of 3 months of PQE intervention has significant improvement in exercise capacity, skeletal muscle strength, and quality of life of COPD-stable patients. Scientifically configuring landscape patterns based on their relationship with ground-level ozone concentrations (GOCs) is an effective way to prevent and control ground-level ozone pollution. In this paper, a GOC variation trend prediction model (hybrid model) combining a generalized linear model (GLM) and a logistic regression model (LRM) was established to analyze the spatiotemporal variation patterns in GOCs as well as their responses to landscape patterns. The model exhibited satisfactory performance, with percent of samples correctly predicted (PCP) value of 82.33% and area under receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) value of 0.70. Using the hybrid model, the per-pixel rise probability of annual average GOCs at a spatial resolution of 1 km in Shenzhen were generated. The results showed that (1) annual average GOCs were increasing in Shenzhen from 2015 to 2020, and had obvious spatial differences, with a higher value in the west and a lower value in the east; (2) variation trend in GOCs was significant positively correlated with landscape heterogeneity (HET), while significant negatively correlated with dominance (DMG) and contagion (CON); (3) GOCs in Shenzhen has a great risk of rising, especially in GuangMing, PingShan, LongGang, LuoHu and BaoAn. The results provide not only a preliminary index for estimating the GOC variation trend in the absence of air quality monitoring data but also guidance for landscape optimizing design from the perspective of controlling ground-level ozone pollution.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between creatinine to cystatin C ratio (CCR) and bone mineral density (BMD) in middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study investigated participants aged 50-85, using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 1999 to 2002. The correlation between CCR and total BMD was assessed by multivariate linear regression models, using stratified analysis by age, sex and race (Mexican American, other Hispanic, non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, and other race) to distinguish various special populations. RESULTS: Among 2992 patients, multiple regression models revealed a significant positive correlation between CCR and total BMD: model 1, 0.030 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.029, 0.031); model 2, 0.009 (95% CI 0.008, 0.010); model 3, 0.010 (95% CI 0.009, 0.013). After controlling for all covariates, a positive correlation was observed between CCR and total BMD in both men and women, and was further strengthened in older age groups. When stratifying by race, the positive correlation was most significant among 'other Hispanic' participants; there was no significant correlation among those of 'other race'. CONCLUSIONS: A positive correlation was demonstrated between CCR and total BMD in middle-aged and older adults aged 50-85 years, with the most significant positive correlation in the older 'other Hispanic' population. No significant correlation was observed among participants of 'other race'.
