RESUMO

The catalytic performance of immobilized lipase is greatly influenced by functional support, which attracts growing interest for designing supports to achieve their promotive catalytic activity. Many lipases bind strongly to hydrophobic surfaces where they undergo interfacial activation. Herein, the behavioral differences of lipases with distinct lid structures on interfaces of varying hydrophobicity levels were firstly investigated by molecular simulations. It was found that a reasonable hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface could facilitate the lipase to undergo interfacial activation. Building on these findings, a novel "nest"-like superhydrophobic ZIFs (ZIFN) composed of hydrophobic ligands was prepared for the first time and used to immobilize lipase from Aspergillus oryzae (AOL@ZIFN). The AOL@ZIFN exhibited 2.0-folds higher activity than free lipase in the hydrolysis of p-Nitrophenyl palmitate (p-NPP). Especially, the modification of superhydrophobic ZIFN with an appropriate amount of hydrophilic tannic acid can significantly improve the activity of the immobilized lipase (AOL@ZIFN-TA). The AOL@ZIFN-TA exhibited 30-folds higher activity than free lipase, and still maintained 82% of its initial activity after 5 consecutive cycles, indicating good reusability. These results demonstrated that nanomaterials with rational arrangement of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface could facilitate the lipase to undergo interfacial activation and improve its activity, displaying the potential of the extensive application.

Background: Progress in cardiovascular health is increasingly concentrated in high-income countries, while the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is high in low- and middle-income countries, a clear health inequity that must be urgently addressed. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and clustering of CVD risk factors in the three Lancang-Mekong regions. Methods: We conducted a population-based cross-sectional survey from January 2021 to March 2023 in China, Laos, and Cambodia. We compared the prevalence and clustering of CVD risk factors-including hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, overweight/obesity, current smoking status, current drinking status, inadequate vegetable and fruit intake, and insufficient physical activity-across the three regions, further stratifying the data by gender and age. Multivariate logistic regression models were performed to explore factors influencing the aggregation of CVD risk factors (≥2, ≥3, ≥4). Results: A total of 11,005 adults were included in the study. Hypertension emerged as the primary metabolic risk factor in Laos (36.8%) and Cambodia (23.5%), whereas overweight/obesity was the primary risk factor in China (37.6%). In terms of behavioral risk factors, participants in all three regions showed insufficient vegetable and fruit intake. The prevalence of individuals without CVD risk factors was 10% in China, 1.9% in Laos, and 5.2% in Cambodia. Meanwhile, the prevalence of two or more risk factors was 64.6% in China, 79.2% in Laos, and 76.0% in Cambodia. Multivariate logistic regression models revealed that the propensity for CVD risk factors clustering was higher in men and increased with age in all three countries. Conclusions: CVD risk factors and multiple clustering are pressing health threats among adults in low- and middle-income areas along the Lancang-Mekong River Basin. This study highlights the urgent need for proactive tailored strategies to control CVD risk factors.

While hydrometallurgy is the primary technology for recycling spent lithium-ion batteries due to various advantages, it still involves substantial consumption of chemical reagents and poses challenges in wastewater emission. Herein, we report the realization of cathode recycling under lean-leachate conditions by dynamically stabilizing hole-mediated diffusion kinetics, which is enabled by synchronizing the extraction step during the leaching stage, thus continuously removing the dissolved ions out of the leachate. Theoretical molecular dynamics simulations predict that preventing the accumulation of the dissolved ions is efficient for keeping the leaching process proceeding. Experimentally, even with a small dosage of leachate (0.5 mL), a 94.51% leaching efficiency can be achieved (90 °C, 40 min) for spent LNO materials. Considering that our strategy is not limited to a specific materials system, it could be extended to recycle other valuable materials (including LCO or NCM 811) with minimal leachate usage.

Excitonic systems, facilitated by optical pumping, electrostatic gating or magnetic field, sustain composite particles with fascinating physics. Although various intriguing excitonic phases have been revealed via global measurements, the atomic-scale accessibility towards excitons has yet to be established. Here, we realize the ground-state interlayer exciton complexes through the intrinsic charge transfer in monolayer YbCl3/graphite heterostructure. Combining scanning tunneling microscope and theoretical calculations, the excitonic in-gap states are directly profiled. The out-of-plane excitonic charge clouds exhibit oscillating Rydberg nodal structure, while their in-plane arrangements are determined by moiré periodicity. Exploiting the tunneling probe to reflect the shape of charge clouds, we reveal the principal quantum number hierarchy of Rydberg series, which points to an excitonic energy-level configuration with unusually large binding energy. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of mapping out the charge clouds of excitons microscopically and pave a brand-new way to directly investigate the nanoscale order of exotic correlated phases.

Objectives: Current diameter-based guidelines for ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (aTAA) do not consistently predict risk of dissection/rupture. ATAA wall stresses may enhance risk stratification independent of diameter. The relation of wall stresses and diameter indexed to height and body surface area (BSA) is unknown. Our objective was to compare aTAA wall stresses with indexed diameters in relation to all-cause mortality at 3.75 years follow-up. Methods: Finite element analyses were performed in a veteran population with aortas ≥ 4.0 cm. Three-dimensional geometries were reconstructed from computed tomography with models accounting for pre-stress geometries. A fiber-embedded hyperelastic material model was applied to obtain wall stress distributions under systolic pressure. Peak wall stresses were compared across guideline thresholds for diameter/BSA and diameter/height. Hazard ratios for all-cause mortality and surgical aneurysm repair were estimated using cause-specific Cox proportional hazards models. Results: Of 253 veterans, 54 (21 %) had aneurysm repair at 3.75 years. Indexed diameter alone would have prompted repair at baseline in 17/253 (6.7 %) patients, including only 4/230 (1.7 %) with diameter < 5.5 cm. Peak wall stresses did not significantly differ across guideline thresholds for diameter/BSA (circumferential: p = 0.15; longitudinal: p = 0.18), but did differ for diameter/height (circumferential: p = 0.003; longitudinal: p = 0.048). All-cause mortality was independently associated with peak longitudinal stresses (p = 0.04). Peak longitudinal stresses were best predicted by diameter (c-statistic = 0.66), followed by diameter/height (c-statistic = 0.59), and diameter/BSA (c-statistic = 0.55). Conclusions: Diameter/height improved stratification of peak wall stresses compared to diameter/BSA. Peak longitudinal stresses predicted all-cause mortality independent of age and indexed diameter and may aid risk stratification for aTAA adverse events.

The genus Rhodococcus is recognized for its potential to degrade a large range of aromatic substances, including plant-derived phenolic compounds. We used comparative genomics in the context of the broader Rhodococcus pan-genome to study genomic traits of two newly described Rhodococcus strains (type-strain Rhodococcus pseudokoreensis R79T and Rhodococcus koreensis R85) isolated from apple rhizosphere. Of particular interest was their ability to degrade phenolic compounds as part of an integrated approach to treat apple replant disease (ARD) syndrome. The pan-genome of the genus Rhodococcus based on 109 high-quality genomes was open with a small core (1.3%) consisting of genes assigned to basic cell functioning. The range of genome sizes in Rhodococcus was high, from 3.7 to 10.9 Mbp. Genomes from host-associated strains were generally smaller compared to environmental isolates which were characterized by exceptionally large genome sizes. Due to large genomic differences, we propose the reclassification of distinct groups of rhodococci like the Rhodococcus equi cluster to new genera. Taxonomic species affiliation was the most important factor in predicting genetic content and clustering of the genomes. Additionally, we found genes that discriminated between the strains based on habitat. All members of the genus Rhodococcus had at least one gene involved in the pathway for the degradation of benzoate, while biphenyl degradation was mainly restricted to strains in close phylogenetic relationships with our isolates. The ~40% of genes still unclassified in larger Rhodococcus genomes, particularly those of environmental isolates, need more research to explore the metabolic potential of this genus.IMPORTANCERhodococcus is a diverse, metabolically powerful genus, with high potential to adapt to different habitats due to the linear plasmids and large genome sizes. The analysis of its pan-genome allowed us to separate host-associated from environmental strains, supporting taxonomic reclassification. It was shown which genes contribute to the differentiation of the genomes based on habitat, which can possibly be used for targeted isolation and screening for desired traits. With respect to apple replant disease (ARD), our isolates showed genome traits that suggest potential for application in reducing plant-derived phenolic substances in soil, which makes them good candidates for further testing against ARD.

This study focused on the nuanced phenomenon of gendered parenting by exploring how maternal son preference is associated with depressive symptoms among Chinese early adolescents. Focusing on 1093 junior high school students from a relatively affluent city in Western China, this study examined the mediating roles of mother-child attachment and father-child attachment as well as the moderating role of school connectedness in the relationship between maternal son preference and depressive symptoms. The results revealed a noteworthy positive correlation between maternal son preference and depressive symptoms among female adolescents, with no significant association observed in males. In addition, mother-child attachment and father-child attachment mediated the relationship between maternal son preference and girls' depressive symptoms, supporting the "spillover effect" and "crossover effect". Moreover, a moderation effect analysis indicated that a higher level of school connectedness can buffer the effect of maternal son preference on girls' depressive symptoms, while a lower level of school connectedness can enhance the effect of maternal son preference on girls' depressive symptoms. In addition, maternal son preference was negatively correlated with boys' depressive symptoms in relation to high school connectedness. These insights help enhance people's understanding of gendered parenting, emphasizing the enduring necessity of addressing son preference within the broader context of promoting gender equality.

Partial label learning (PLL) studies the problem of learning instance classification with a set of candidate labels and only one is correct. While recent works have demonstrated that the Vision Transformer (ViT) has achieved good results when training from clean data, its applications to PLL remain limited and challenging. To address this issue, we rethink the relationship between instances and object queries to propose K-means cross-attention transformer for PLL (KMT-PLL), which can continuously learn cluster centers and be used for downstream disambiguation tasks. More specifically, K-means cross-attention as a clustering process can effectively learn the cluster centers to represent label classes. The purpose of this operation is to make the similarity between instances and labels measurable, which can effectively detect noise labels. Furthermore, we propose a new corrected cross entropy formulation, which can assign weights to candidate labels according to the instance-to-label relevance to guide the training of the instance classifier. As the training goes on, the ground-truth label is progressively identified, and the refined labels and cluster centers in turn help to improve the classifier. Simulation results demonstrate the advantage of the KMT-PLL and its suitability for PLL.

Organic near-infrared room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials offer remarkable advantages in bioimaging due to their characteristic time scales and background noise elimination. However, developing near-infrared RTP materials for deep tissue imaging still faces challenges since the small band gap may increase the non-radiative decay, resulting in weak emission and short phosphorescence lifetime. In this study, fused-ring pyrrole-based structures were employed as the guest molecules for the construction of long wavelength emissive RTP materials. Compared to the decrease of the singlet energy level, the triplet energy level showed a more effectively decrease with the increase of the conjugation of the substituent groups. Moreover, the sufficient conjugation of fused ring structures in the guest molecule suppresses the non-radiative decay of triplet excitons. Therefore, a near-infrared RTP material (764 nm) was achieved for deep penetration bioimaging. Tumor cell membrane is used to coat RTP nanoparticles (NPs) to avoid decreasing the RTP performance compared to traditional coating by amphiphilic surfactants. RTP NPs with tumor-targeting properties show favorable phosphorescent properties, superior stability, and excellent biocompatibility. These NPs are applied for time-resolved luminescence imaging to eliminate background interference with excellent tissue penetration. This study provides a practical solution to prepare long-wavelength and long-lifetime organic RTP materials and their applications in bioimaging.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the genetic causes of 22 patients with clinically high suspicion of X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia from 20 unrelated Chinese families, expand the spectrum of ectodysplasin-A mutations, and provide more evidence for variants of uncertain significance. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing was performed and potentially pathogenic variants were verified by Sanger sequencing. Western blotting, real-time PCR and immunofluorescence analyses were performed to investigate the preliminary functions of the candidate variants. RESULTS: Nineteen ectodysplasin-A variants were identified, six of which were not previously reported. Among these variants, we identified a patient who carried two mutations in ectodysplasin-A and exhibited more severe phenotypes. Additionally, mutant protein expression levels decreased, whereas mRNA transcription levels increased. Cellular sublocalisation of the variants located in the tumour necrosis factor homologous domain showed that the proteins accumulated in the nucleus, whereas wild-type proteins remained in the cell membrane. A rare indel variant and two classical splicing variants that lead to exon 7 skipping were detected. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides definitive diagnoses for 20 families with suspected X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and additional information on clinical heterogeneity and genotype-phenotype relationships.

Objectives: The treatment of advanced and recurrent gynecological cancers (ARGCs) remains more difficult evens. This assay aims to introduce the application of minimally invasive surgery-multidisciplinary team (MIS-MDT) as well as a comprehensive evaluation and treatment program of ARGC. Materials and Methods: The diagnosis and treatment model of MDT collaboration has become a new model of clinical cancer treatment. In my country, it is in the start-up and trial stage. Our team began to explore surgical treatment of recurrent gynecological cancers in 2011 and has been committed to MDT treatment of ARGC for more than 3 years. Results: So far, 61 patients have completed MDT treatment (28 of them were advanced gynecological cancer patients, 33 of them were recurrent gynecological cancer patients). Among them, MDT involved 43 times in gastrointestinal surgery, 21 times in urology, 5 times in the department of intractable abdominal diseases, and 5 times in other departments. After surgery, 58 patients (95%) restarted adjuvant therapy such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In addition, 32 patients (52.5%) underwent genetic and molecular testing, of which 14 patients (23%) accepted targeted and immunotherapy based on the testing results. After MIS-MDT treatment, the median progression-free survival of these patients was >30 months, respectively. Conclusion: These patients have achieved good results after surgery of MDT. With continuous accumulation and summarization, we have systematically reviewed the diagnosis and treatment model of ARGC and guided clinical work as the model of Tongji Tenth Hospital (comprehensive evaluation and treatment).

Multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) molecules with narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) have attracted much attention recently. In this work, 36 borane/amine (B/N) type MR-TADF molecules were theoretically designed by using an intramolecular-lock strategy and systematically studied based on first-principles calculations. It was found that intramolecular-lock at different positions and in different manners could induce different luminescent properties. The calculated oscillator strengths for PXZ-L2 and PTZ-L2 locking systems are weaker than that for 2DPABN (without intramolecular-lock), while the Cz-L1 and TMCZ-L1 locking could result in stronger oscillator strength. Though the calculated FWHM of all the systems with intramolecular-lock is higher than that of 2DPABN, the Cz, TMCz and DMAC locking at L1 or L2 would induce relatively small FWHM which is comparable to that of 2DPABN. Our calculation results indicate that intramolecular-lock could enhance the SOC values and decrease the energy gap between the first singlet excited state and the first triplet excited state, which is quite favorable to reverse intersystem crossing. The Cz, TMCz and DMAC locking systems could realize comparable and higher efficiency than 2DPABN, thus higher quantum efficiency could be obtained. Our calculation results indicate that the intramolecular-lock strategy is an effective method to realize the design of highly efficient MR-TADF emitters.

Background: Citrullinemia type I (CTLN1) is a rare autosomal recessive inborn error of the urea cycle caused by mutations in the gene encoding the arginosuccinate synthetase (ASS1) enzyme. Classic CTLN1 often manifests with acute hyperammonemia and neurological symptoms. Molecular genetic testing is critical for patient diagnosis. Methods: Three unrelated families with clinically suspected CTLN1 were included in this study. Potential pathogenic variants were identified using whole exome sequencing (WES) and validated using Sanger sequencing. Western blotting, quantitative PCR, immunofluorescent staining, and ELISA were used to assess functional changes in candidate ASS1 variants. Results: Five variants were identified, two of which were novel, and one has been reported, but its pathogenicity was not validated. The novel variant c.649-651del (p.P217del) and the 5'UTR variant (c.-4C>T) resulted in a decrease in ASS1 expression at both the protein and transcription levels. The other novel variant, c.1048C>T (p.Q350*), showed a marked decrease in expression at the protein level, with the formation of truncated proteins but an increased transcription. Both c.649_651del (p.P217del) and c.1048C>T (p.Q350*) showed a highly significant reduction in enzyme activity, while c.-4C>T had no effect. Conclusion: We identified two novel variants and a hypomorphic non-coding variant in ASS1 and validated the pathogenicity using functional studies. Our findings contribute to expanding the spectrum of ASS1 variants and understanding the genotype-phenotype relationships of CTLN1.

Introduction: Mitochondria are a significant target of lonidamine (LND). However, its limited solubility and inability to specifically target mitochondria, LND can lead to hepatic toxicity and has shown only modest anticancer activity. The objective of this study is to establish a glutathione programmed mitochondria targeted delivery of LND for the effective treatment of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Methods: In this study, LND was encapsulated in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) wrapped with mitochondria-targeting short-chain triphenylphosphonium-tocopherol polyethylene glycol succinate (TPP-TPGS, TPS) and tumor-targeting long-chain 1, 2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-S-S-polyethylene glycol-R6RGD (DSPE-S-S-PEG2000-R6RGD, DSSR), which were designated as LND-PLGA/TPS/DSSR NPs. The release behavior was evaluated, and cellular uptake, in vitro and in vivo antitumor activity of nanoparticles were investigated. The mechanism, including apoptosis of tumor cells and mitochondrial damage and respiratory rate detection, was also further investigated. Results: LND-PLGA/TPS/DSSR NPs were successfully prepared, and characterization revealed that they are globular particles with smooth surfaces and an average diameter of about 250 nm. Long-chain DSSR in LND-PLGA/TPS/DSSR NPs prevented positively charged LND-PLGA/TPS NPs from being cleared by the reticuloendothelial system. Furthermore, LND release rate from NPs at pH 8.0 was significantly higher than that at pH 7.4 and 5.5, which demonstrated specific LND release in mitochondria and prevented LND leakage in cytoplasm and lysosome. NPs could locate in mitochondria, and the released LND triggered apoptosis of tumor cells by damaging mitochondria and releasing apoptosis-related proteins. In addition, in TNBC mice model, programmed mitochondria targeted NPs improved efficacy and reduced LND toxicity. Conclusion: LND-PLGA/TPS/DSSR NPs may be a useful system and provide an effective approach for the treatment of TNBC.

The combination of chemo- and biocatalysts to perform one-pot synthetic route has presented great challenges for decades. Herein, glutamate oxidase (GLOX) and trimanganese tetraoxide (Mn3O4) nanocrystals were combined for the first time by one-step biomineralization to construct a mimic multi-enzyme system (GLOX@Mn3O4) for chemoenzymatic synthesis of α­ketoglutaric acid (α­KG). Mn3O4 not only served as a support for the enzyme immobilization, but also contributed its catalytic activity to co-operate with natural enzymes for the cascade reactions. The as-synthesized chemo-enzyme catalysts with directly contacted catalytic sites of the enzyme and inorganic catalyst maximizes the substrate channeling effffects for in situ rapid decomposition of the oxidative intermediate, H2O2, during the enzymatic oxidation of sodium glutamate, thus relieving the inhibition of H2O2 accumulation for GLOX. Benefiting from the excellent stability and reusability of GLOX@Mn3O4, a nearly 100% conversion (99.7%) of l-glutamate to α-KG was achieved, over 4.7 times higher than that of the free GLOX system (21.2%). This work provides a feasibility for constructing a high-performance chemo-enzyme catalyst for cascade catalysis, especially for those reactions with toxic intermediates.

Temporal graph neural network (GNN) has recently received significant attention due to its wide application scenarios, such as bioinformatics, knowledge graphs, and social networks. There are some temporal GNNs that achieve remarkable results. However, these works focus on future event prediction and are performed under the assumption that all historical events are observable. In real-world applications, events are not always observable, and estimating event time is as important as predicting future events. In this article, we propose, a missing event-aware temporal GNN, which uniformly models evolving graph structure and timing of events to support predicting what will happen in the future and when it will happen. models the dynamic of both observed and missing events as two coupled temporal point processes (TPPs), thereby incorporating the effects of missing events into the network. Experimental results on several real-world temporal graphs demonstrate that significantly outperforms the existing methods with up to 89% and 112% more accurate time and link prediction. As a severe public health concern directly endangering life safety, adolescent suicide has been extensively investigated in variable-centered studies. However, gaps remain in the knowledge of heterogeneous suicide risk patterns and their developmental nature. Additionally, little is known about protective factors associated with suicide risk patterns and changes. This study applied person-centered approaches to explore suicide risk profiles and transitions over time in early Chinese adolescents, along with their protective factors. A total of 1518 junior high school students (49.6% girls, Mage = 13.57, SD = 0.75) participated in two surveys within a 12-month interval. Latent Profile Analysis and Latent Transition Analysis were used to model the profiles and transitions of suicide risk. Three risk profiles were identified at both time points: low risk profile (73.9, 78.3%), medium risk-high threat profile (16.2, 10.2%), and high risk profile (9.9, 10.2%). Low risk profile was stable, while medium risk-high threat and high risk profiles showed great transitions over 12 months. Sense of control, meaning in life, and regulatory emotional self-efficacy served as protective factors against suicide risk profiles and transitions. Findings underscore the importance of comprehensively illustrating suicide risk states from multiple aspects, as well as understanding the fluid nature of transitions between different risk states. Prevention and intervention strategies aimed at enhancing resilience, such as increasing sense of control, perceived meaningfulness, and belief in emotional regulation, may contribute to reducing the risk of suicide among adolescents.

"Candidatus Accumulibacter" is the major polyphosphate-accumulating organism (PAO) in global wastewater treatment systems, and its phylogenetic and functional diversity have expanded in recent years. In addition to the widely recognized type I and II sublineages, we discovered a novel type enriched in laboratory bioreactors. Core gene and machine learning-based gene feature profiling supported the assertion that type III "Ca. Accumulibacter" is a potential PAO with the unique function of using dimethyl sulfoxide as an electron acceptor. Based on the correlation between ppk1 and genome similarity, the species-level richness of Accumulibacter was estimated to be over 100, suggesting that the currently recognized species are only the tip of the iceberg. Meanwhile, the interstrain transcriptional and morphological features of multiple "Ca. Accumulibacter" strains co-occurring in a bioreactor were investigated. Metatranscriptomics of seven co-occurring strains indicated that the expression level and interphasic dynamics of PAO phenotype-related genes had minimal correlation with their phylogeny. In particular, the expression of denitrifying and polyphosphate (poly-P) metabolism genes exhibited higher interstrain and interphasic divergence than expression of glycogen and polyhydroxyalkanoate metabolic genes. A strategy of cloning rRNA genes from different strains based on similar genomic synteny was successfully applied to differentiate their morphology via fluorescence in situ hybridization. Our study further expands the phylogenetic and functional diversity of "Ca. Accumulibacter" and proposes that deciphering the function and capability of certain "Ca. Accumulibacter" should be tailored to the environment and population in question. IMPORTANCE In the last 2 decades, "Ca. Accumulibacter" has garnered significant attention as the core functional but uncultured taxon for enhanced biological phosphorus removal due to its phylogenetic and functional diversity and intragenus niche differentiation. Since 2002, it has been widely known that this genus has two sublineages (type I and II). However, in this study, a metagenomic approach led to the discovery of a novel type (type III) with proposed novel functional features. By comparing the average nucleotide identity of "Ca. Accumulibacter" genomes and the similarity of ppk1, a phylogenetic biomarker largely deposited in databases, the global species-level richness of "Ca. Accumulibacter" was estimated for the first time to be over 100. Furthermore, we observed the co-occurrence of multiple "Ca. Accumulibacter" strains in a single bioreactor and found the simultaneous transcriptional divergence of these strains intriguing with regard to their niche differentiation within a single community. Our results indicated a decoupling feature between transcriptional pattern and phylogeny for co-occurring strains.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia, characterized by elevated total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), as well as decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), has long been recognized as a major risk factor for age-related diseases. Recent studies have shown that exercise can be effective in mitigating dyslipidemia in older adults. The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate the effects of different exercise modalities (aerobic exercise [AE], resistance exercise [RE], aerobic+resistance exercise [AE+RE], and high-intensity interval training) on lipid profile in the elderly population, in order to identify the most effective exercise modality for maintaining lipid profile health in older adults. METHODS: A comprehensive database search of PubMed, EBSCO, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang database. Eligible studies were individually assessed according to the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool version 2, and the data were analyzed and processed using RevMan 5.4.1 analysis software. RESULTS: This study identified 20 randomized controlled trials with a total of 988 subjects, of which 541 were in the exercise group and 447 in the control group. Our analysis showed that AE significantly reduced TC (P < .05), triglycerides (P < .01), and LDL-C (P < .01), while increasing HDL-C (P < .01) in the elderly population. RE significantly reduced the elevation of TC (P < .01) and LDL-C (P < .05) indices in the elderly population, while AE+RE had a significant effect on decreasing TC (P < .01) and LDL-C (P < .01) indices. CONCLUSION: Our analysis indicates that AE is the most effective exercise modality for reducing dyslipidemia in older adults, compared to RE, AE+RE, and high-intensity interval training. These findings suggest that AE should be promoted as an important lifestyle intervention to improve lipid profile health in the elderly population. However, further research is needed to investigate the optimal duration, frequency, and intensity of AE required to achieve the most beneficial effects on lipid profile health in older adults.

BACKGROUND: In ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm risk stratification, aortic area/height ratio is a reasonable alternative to maximum diameter. Biomechanically, aortic dissection may be initiated by wall stress exceeding wall strength. Our objective was to evaluate the association between aortic area/height and peak aneurysm wall stresses in relation to valve morphology and 3-year all-cause mortality. METHODS: Finite element analysis was performed on 270 ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (46 associated with bicuspid and 224 with tricuspid aortic valves) in veterans. Three-dimensional aneurysm geometries were reconstructed from computed tomography and models developed accounting for prestress geometries. Fiber-embedded hyperelastic material model was applied to obtain aneurysm wall stresses during systole. Correlations of aortic area/height ratio and peak wall stresses were compared across valve types. Area/height ratio was evaluated across peak wall stress thresholds obtained from proportional hazards models of 3-year all-cause mortality, with aortic repair treated as a competing risk. RESULTS: Aortic area/height 10 cm2/m or greater coincided with 23/34 (68%) 5.0 to 5.4 cm and 20/24 (83%) 5.5 cm or greater aneurysms. Area/height correlated weakly with peak aneurysm stresses: for tricuspid valves, r = 0.22 circumferentially and r = 0.24 longitudinally; and for bicuspid valves, r = 0.42 circumferentially and r = 0.14 longitudinally. Age and peak longitudinal stress, but not area/height, were independent predictors of all-cause mortality (age: hazard ratio, 2.20 per 9-year increase, P = .013; peak longitudinal stress: hazard ratio, 1.78 per 73-kPa increase, P = .035). CONCLUSIONS: Area/height was more predictive of high circumferential stresses in bicuspid than tricuspid valve aneurysms, but similarly less predictive of high longitudinal stresses in both valve types. Peak longitudinal stress, not area/height, independently predicted all-cause mortality. VIDEO ABSTRACT.
