RESUMO

AIM: To study the phenomena of visual-hemispatial neglect in healthy people and patients with brain diseases of different genesis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty-eight patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, 68 patients with exogenous organic brain diseases and 240 healthy adults of different age were included in the study. The digit cancellation test modified by the authors was used. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The validity of the modified digit cancellation test was approved and its age standards were obtained. In healthy right-handed people, there was the bias of attention focus to the left, the decrease of asymmetry intensity of visual-spatial inattention during physiological aging and the presence of some clinical peculiarities of neglect in schizophrenia spectrum disorders and lateralized organic damages of the brain. This variant of the test can be recommended for practical use as the sensitive psychometric tool.

RESUMO

Electroencephalograms (EEGs) of 110 pupils (aged 6.5-19.5 years; 48 healthy subjects, 51 with cerebral palsy, 11 with acquired cerebral defect) were acquired. The stable age dependences of averaged parameters of k x f-beta EEG spectra model, deviations from the model, and normalized ranges of detrended EEGs were found. These dependences were observed in both healthy subjects and patients, in males and females, in the cases of congenital and acquired pathology. This regularity reflects the process of cerebral maturation and developmental change of structure types of the EEG process, and it is inherent to normal as well as to abnormal brain development.

RESUMO

In our practice, blepharitis is one of the more common eyelid abnormalities and one of the most difficult to treat. We introduce a new treatment that we have found to be helpful. A prospective study was devised to test its efficacy using 20 patients distributed randomly into three different treatment protocols. Our new protocol, using lyophilized collagen pads as adjunctive treatment, significantly improved results compared with controls. We had a 79% improvement in symptomatology and a 78% improvement in objective findings.

RESUMO

With so many different kinds of intraocular lenses from which to choose, the cataract surgeon is often faced with a difficult decision--which is the best lens for the patient. Although, there is no perfect intraocular lens, we attempt to delineate several desirable features. These include pliability, inert ultraviolet-filtering lens material, compact design, and posterior concavity to facilitate laser surgery. Successful blending of these features can make a well-tolerated intraocular lens.

RESUMO

This study is a preliminary report on the use of freeze-dried-collagen eye patches in the treatment of a selected group of inflammatory eye conditions. The early responses to treatment have been encouraging in cases of allergic conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and pterygium. In addition, the collagen patches have exhibited a significant beneficial effect in the resolution of ectropion.

RESUMO

Posterior capsule opacification, caused by pearl formation or fibrosis, occurs commonly following cataract surgery. This paper presents results of a study of 367 Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomies and discusses both risks and benefits. Specific attention has been given to intraocular pressure (IOP), corneal endothelial cell integrity, and visual acuities. The average maximum induced IOP rise was 1.4 mm Hg and this occurred within one hour of the capsulotomy. The average corneal endothelial cell change was a loss of 7% or 115 cells/mm2. Visual acuity improved to better than 20/30 in 87.5% of patients.
