PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy and safety of 0.19-mg fluocinolone acetonide (FAc) intravitreal implant (Iluvien®) in treating chronic postoperative cystoid macular edema (PCME) after pars plana vitrectomy. DESIGN: Retrospective multicentric case series in clinical settings. SUBJECTS: Patients with chronic PCME who underwent vitrectomy in tertiary care centers in France. All eyes had a documented good response to the DEX implant prior to FAc implantation. METHODS: Review of charts and OCT scans of patients treated with a FAc intravitreal implant. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary endpoints were the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central retinal thickness (CRT). Secondary endpoints were the intraocular pressure (IOP); proportion of patients maintaining a BCVA ≥20/40; need for additional non-study treatment; differences between eyes that underwent a single and multiple surgeries and OCT biomarkers of better BCVA. RESULTS: Forty-nine eyes of 49 patients with a mean follow-up of 24.5 ± 3.9 months were included. The mean BCVA increased from 0.40 ± 0.26 logMAR at baseline to 0.32 ± 0.24 logMAR at month 24 (M24) (p=0.0035). The mean CRT decreased from 409.37 ± 139.43 µm at baseline to 340 ± 91 µm at M24 (p=0.0001). The mean IOP was 14.0 ± 4 mmHg at baseline and remained stable at 14.03 ± 4.1 mmHg at M24 (p=0.99). During the follow-up, the IOP exceeded 21 mmHg in 9 eyes. The IOP rise was controlled with topical therapy in all eyes except one, which required cyclophotocoagulation. The BCVA was ≥20/40 in 47% of eyes (95% CI: 34%-61%) at baseline and in 58% of eyes at M24 (95% CI: 41%-73%). At M18, the likelihood of achieving a BCVA ≥20/40 was higher in eyes with intact external limiting membrane and ellipsoid zone. Additional dexamethasone implant (DEXi) was injected in 14 eyes (28.57%). The treatment burden of 2.45 ± 1.35 DEXi/year was decreased to 0.57 ± 0.60 DEXi/year after FAc implantation (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: FAc implant improved the BCVA and reduced the CRT in eyes with chronic PCME after vitrectomy. The IOP rise could be anticipated by the previous response to corticosteroids. FAc implant in eyes with chronic PCME also allowed reducing the treatment burden.

BACKGROUND: After idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) removal, it is unclear whether the internal limiting membrane (ILM) should be removed. The objective was to assess if active ILM peeling after iERM removal could induce microscotomas. METHODS: The PEELING study is a national randomised clinical trial. When no spontaneous ILM peeling occurred, patients were randomised either to the ILM peeling or no ILM peeling group. Groups were compared at the month 1 (M1), M6 and M12 visits in terms of microperimetry, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and optical coherence tomography findings. The primary outcome was the difference in microscotoma number between baseline and M6. RESULTS: 213 patients were included, 101 experienced spontaneous ILM peeling and 100 were randomised to the ILM peeling (n=51) or no ILM peeling group (n=49). The difference in microscotoma number between both groups was significant at M1 (3.9 more microscotomas in ILM peeling group, (0.8;7.0) p=0.0155) but not at M6 (2.1 more microscotomas in ILM peeling group (-0.5;4.7) p=0.1155). Only in the no ILM peeling group, the number of microscotomas significantly decreased and the mean retinal sensitivity significantly improved. The ERM recurred in nine patients in the no ILM peeling group (19.6%) versus zero in the ILM peeling group (p=0.0008): two of them underwent revision surgery. There was no difference in mean BCVA and microperimetry between patients experiencing or not a recurrence at M12. CONCLUSION: Spontaneous ILM peeling is very common. Active ILM peeling prevents anatomical ERM recurrence but may induce retinal impairments and delay visual recovery. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT02146144.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the fluocinolone acetonide implant (FAi, Iluvien® Horus pharma, Nice, France) in non-infectious uveitic macular edema (UME) and to approach the predictive factors of treatment response. METHODS: This retrospective, multicenter real-life study included patients with chronic non-infectious UME who received intravitreal FAi after at least two dexamethasone implants (DEXi). RESULTS: Twenty-six eyes from 22 patients (73.1% of females) were included. The mean age was 60.4 ± 16 years. The mean follow-up was 11.4 ± 2 months. The mean baseline best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.43 ± 0.36 LogMAR, improving significantly after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months (all p < 0.05 vs. baseline). The mean baseline central macular thickness (CMT) was 429 ± 110 µm, improving significantly after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months (all p < 0.05 vs. baseline). Five eyes (19.2%) developed ocular hypertension during the follow-up, requiring initiation or strengthening of intraocular pressure lowering medication. The majority of eyes (77%) did not require any rescue DEXi during the available 12-month follow-up. The resolution of UME after DEXi seemed to predict the anatomical response after FAi. The baseline presence of a disorganization of the inner retinal layers (DRIL) and hyperreflective foci (HRF) were both associated with a higher likelihood of requiring rescue DEXi injections. CONCLUSION: FAi implantation led to a significant BCVA and CMT improvement with a good safety profile over the 12-month follow-up. Predictive factors of treatment outcomes seem to include the anatomical response to DEXi and the presence of DRIL and HRF at baseline.

Inherited retinal diseases are a leading and untreatable cause of blindness and are therefore candidate diseases for gene therapy. Recombinant vectors derived from adeno-associated virus (rAAV) are currently the most promising vehicles for in vivo therapeutic gene delivery to the retina. However, there is a need for novel AAV-based vectors with greater efficacy for ophthalmic applications, as underscored by recent reports of dose-related inflammatory responses in clinical trials of rAAV-based ocular gene therapies. Improved therapeutic efficacy of vectors would allow for decreases in the dose delivered, with consequent reductions in inflammatory reactions. Here, we describe the development of new rAAV vectors using bioconjugation chemistry to modify the rAAV capsid, thereby improving the therapeutic index. Covalent coupling of a mannose ligand, via the formation of a thiourea bond, to the amino groups of the rAAV capsid significantly increases vector transduction efficiency of both rat and nonhuman primate retinas. These optimized rAAV vectors have important implications for the treatment of a wide range of retinal diseases.

PURPOSE: To present interim descriptive insights from the OCTOPUS and SWIFT studies on incidence, clinical features, management, and outcomes of intraocular inflammation (IOI), vasculitis, and occlusive vasculitis with brolucizumab treatment (Beovu, Novartis) in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) who were anti-VEGF naive or pretreated with anti-VEGFs (ranibizumab or aflibercept). DESIGN: OCTOPUS (NCT04239027) and SWIFT (NCT04264819) studies are prospective phase IIIb single-arm, open-label, multicenter studies assessing brolucizumab. SUBJECTS: Anti-VEGF naive (OCTOPUS) and pretreated (SWIFT) patients with nAMD. METHODS: Interim prespecified analysis on the efficacy end point provided an opportunity to analyze IOI-related safety. Reports of IOI-related adverse events (AEs) were reviewed, and AE images and clinical features and outcomes of each case were analyzed by a review committee. RESULTS: Of 505 brolucizumab-treated eyes/patients with median brolucizumab treatment of 8.8 months, 53 eyes demonstrated at least 1 IOI-related AE. The incidence of overall IOI-related AEs was 10.5%; among these events, the incidence was 7.1% for IOI only without retinal involvement and 3.4% for IOI with retinal involvement (2.0% with vasculitis, 1.4% with vascular occlusion with or without vasculitis). Incidence was similar in naive and pretreated patients. Before the onset of the first IOI-related AE, eyes received a median of 2 brolucizumab injections; 81.1% of IOI-related AEs occurred during the loading phase (median, 25.0 days from the last brolucizumab injection). At AE onset, most frequently reported symptoms were floaters (52.8%) and blurred or decreased vision (37.8%). Of the 86.8% of AEs that were treated, most were treated with topical corticosteroids (75.5%), 28.3% by systemic corticosteroids, and 26.8% by intraocular corticosteroids. No severe vision loss was reported for the 7 nontreated AEs. Overall, the median best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) change at IOI-related AEs resolution from baseline was 1 letter (range, -74 to +32 letters), and 2 patients with occlusive vasculitis had BCVA loss ≥ 15 letters due to IOI-related AEs. All eyes permanently discontinued brolucizumab after the first IOI-related AE. CONCLUSIONS: This analysis highlights the need for monitoring and education of patients to report any signs of IOI-related events immediately when being treated with brolucizumab. IOI should be treated promptly and intensely with corticosteroids. INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of fluocinolone acetonide implant (FAci) injected 1 month after the last dexamethasone intravitreal implant (DEXi) in chronic diabetic macular oedema (DME) patients. METHODS: Retrospective multicentric study conducted in pseudophakic patients with chronic DME frequently treated with dexamethasone intravitreal implant (DEXi; time to DME recurrence ≤ 6 months), receiving FAci 1 month after the last DEXi, with at least a 6-month follow-up. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT) on optical coherence tomography, intraocular pressure (IOP) and additional treatments were assessed on the day of FAci injection (M0), 1 (M1) and 3 months (M3) later and then every 3 months. RESULTS: A total of 41 eyes from 34 patients were included. At M0, patients' mean age was 68.7 ± 9.8 years, the mean DME duration was 63.9 ± 22.9 months, the mean interval between two DEXi was 14.2 ± 3.3 weeks. M12 data were available for 71% of patients. At baseline, the mean BCVA, CMT and IOP were 63.2 ± 16.6 letters, 299.4 ± 103.3 µm, and 16.2 ± 4.5 mmHg, respectively, and remained stable during the follow-up. At M12, 14% of patients required additional intravitreal treatments. CONCLUSION: In pseudophakic patients with chronic DME showing good response to DEXi but requiring repeated injections every < 6 months, switching to FAci 1 month after the last DEXi was effective and safe. Further prospective randomized controlled studies are needed to confirm these findings, and to determine the best interval between the last DEXi and the first FAci.

The subretinal injection protocol for the only approved retinal gene therapy (voretigene neparvovec-rzyl) includes air tamponade at the end of the procedure, but its effects on the subretinal bleb have not been described. In the present study, we evaluated the distribution of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) after subretinal injection of AAV2 in non-human primates (NHP) without (group A = 3 eyes) or with (group B = 3 eyes) air tamponade. The retinal expression of EGFP was assessed 1 month after subretinal injection with in vivo fundus photographs and fundus autofluorescence. In group A (without air), EGFP expression was limited to the area of the initial subretinal bleb. In group B (with air), EGFP was expressed in a much wider area. These data show that the buoyant force of air on the retina causes a wide subretinal diffusion of vector, away from the injection site. In the present paper, we discuss the beneficial and deleterious clinical effects of this finding. Whereas subretinal injection is likely to become more common with the coming of new gene therapies, the effects of air tamponade should be explored further to improve efficacy, reproducibility, and safety of the protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Central vision loss due to diabetic macular edema (DME) is related to the macular edema itself but also, in some cases, to alterations of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ). The aim of this trial was to study changes in macular vessels in eyes with DME treated with aflibercept using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: This was a longitudinal, prospective, noncontrolled, single-arm study. The primary objective was the quantitative assessment of macular vessels over time in patients with DME treated with intravitreal aflibercept during a 48-week follow-up using OCTA. RESULTS: Twenty-six DME eyes from 26 patients were included (mean age, 64.6 years; women, 53.8%; prior anti-VEGF treatment, 46.1%). Each eye received a mean (SD) of 7.2 (2.2) injections. The following parameters of the FAZ did not change during the 48-week follow-up: the mean (SD) FAZ area varied from 0.19 (0.19) mm2 at baseline (n = 22) to 0.23 (0.20) mm2 at week 48 (n = 15), boundary from 1.54 (1.21) to 2.04 (1.20) mm, and circularity from 0.45 (0.33)% to 0.57 (0.20)%. There was no change in perfusion density and vessel density of the macula in the 3-mm circle. As expected, mean central retinal thickness, macular volume, and visual acuity improved during follow-up. CONCLUSION: No change in macular perfusion was observed in eyes with DME during a 48-week follow-up after intravitreal injections of aflibercept. Randomized controlled trials using OCT angiography in large populations with extended observation periods are needed to assess changes in macular vessels after intravitreal anti-VEGF treatment.

RESUMO

Cyclopentannulation was explored as a strategy to access large, stable azaarenes. Buchwald-Hartwig coupling of previously reported di- and tetrabrominated cyclopentannulated N,N'-dihydrotetraazapentacenes furnished stable azaarenes with up to 13 six-membered rings in a row and a length of 3.1 nm. Their optoelectronic and semi-conducting properties as well as their aromaticity were investigated.

PURPOSE: To evaluate mean change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 52 weeks in patients with inflammatory choroidal neovascularization (CNV) treated with aflibercept. METHODS: We conducted a prospective non-comparative open-label trial. Following one mandatory intravitreal injection of aflibercept, patients were treated under a pro re nata (PRN) dosing regimen with monthly visits. RESULTS: A total of 19 patients were included, but one presented exclusion criteria; 16 patients were followed for the whole 52-week study, and data for the primary endpoint analysis were available for 14. At baseline, mean BCVA and mean central retinal thickness (CRT) were 64.53 (±19.64) letters and 351.79 (±97.77) µm, respectively. At 52 weeks, the mean change in BCVA was +9.50 (±12.90) letters [95%CI = +2.05-+16.95]. One patient had lost more than 15-letters at 24 weeks, and another one at 52 weeks. CRT change was -62.77 (±100.73) µm at 24 weeks and -66.53 (±97.47) µm at 52 weeks. There was a mean number of 3.56 (±3.29) intravitreal injections at 52 weeks (min = 1; max = 12). No serious ocular adverse events related to the treatment were reported. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that aflibercept is clinically effective, both anatomically and functionally in the treatment of inflammatory CNV. Following the first injection, the PRN strategy appears sufficient for treating most choroidal neovessels.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of adherence to French coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 19)-related guidelines for intravitreal injection (IVI) practice on the visual outcomes of patients treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents for macular diseases during the first lockdown period. METHODS: Observational multicentre study including all patients from 18 centres with an IVI initially planned during the lockdown. Visual acuity (VA, ETDRS) was recorded at 1 and 4 months after lockdown. French COVID 19-related guidelines recommended maintaining IVI practice. We defined three groups of patients: A, adherent to guidelines; NA+, non-adherent with delayed IVIs; and NA-, non-adherent without IVIs performed during the lockdown. Risk factors for non-adherence and visual loss were studied. RESULTS: A total of 3020 eyes of 3020 patients, aged 77.8 ± 11.6 years, 59.8% women, were included. 59.3% were non-adherent(46.7% NA+, 12.6% NA-). A smaller decrease in VA at 4 months was observed in the A group than the NA+ and NA- group (-0.2 ± 6.7, -0.3 ± 6.9 and -1.5 ± 6.9, respectively [p < 0.001]). Factors associated with non-adherence were in multivariable analysis, older age, hospital practice, low-density population areas, high viral incidence areas, longer intervals between injection and treat and extent protocol. Factors associated with visual loss at 4 months in multivariable analysis were, being in the NA- group, older age, T&E and fixed regimens. CONCLUSION: Strict adherence to guidelines was associated with better visual outcome, although most of our patients did not attend as planned. Identification of patients at risk could help in the future in case of a new pandemic lockdown.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate real-world treatment outcomes in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) treated with intravitreal aflibercept (IVT-AFL) in routine clinical practice in France. METHODS: RAINBOW (NCT02279537) was an ambispective, observational, 4-year study assessing IVT-AFL effectiveness, treatment patterns, and safety in patients with nAMD in France. Treatment-naïve patients prescribed IVT-AFL and treated according to local practice (pro re nata or treat-and-extend) were eligible. Three treatment cohorts were retrospectively identified based on their treatment pattern within the first 12 months: regular (3 initial monthly IVT-AFL injections received within 45-90 days after the first injection in month 0 and followed by injections every 2 months), irregular with the initial monthly injections, and irregular without the initial monthly injections. The primary endpoint was mean change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) from baseline to month 12. The 48-month results are described here. RESULTS: Overall, the study included 516 patients (each with one study eye), and 30.2% of patients completed 48 months of IVT-AFL treatment. Mean change in BCVA from baseline (56.5 letters) to month 48 for patients with an assessment at both time points was + 1.1 (regular cohort, n = 47), + 0.1 (irregular cohort with initial monthly injections, n = 115), and - 1.3 letters (irregular cohort without initial monthly injections, n = 26), representing a decrease from the gains achieved at month 12. Mean number of IVT-AFL injections received by month 48 in the treatment cohorts was 14.9, 13.7, and 11.9, respectively. The safety profile of IVT-AFL was consistent with previous studies. CONCLUSION: In RAINBOW, the 48-month results demonstrate a lack of long-term effectiveness of IVT-AFL treatment of nAMD due to progressive undertreatment in routine clinical practice in France. These real-world findings highlight the importance of 3 initial monthly IVT-AFL injections followed by continuous proactive treatment beyond the first year to achieve optimal functional outcomes. Visual disorders are often under-diagnosed and under-treated in older patients. The main objective was to evaluate the percentage of patients having an ophthalmological follow-up corresponding to the recommendations of the Syndicat national des ophtalmologistes de France (SNOF). This prospective observational multicentre study included all patients aged 65 years or older presenting to their general practitioner in two medical practices from May to October 2021. Of the 113 patients included, 86 (76,1 %) had adequate ophthalmological follow-up, 14 consulted an ophthalmologist, and a therapeutic decision was made for nine patients. Follow-up of patients was generally as recommended. Screening for visual disorders for patients with no recent follow-up was beneficial. This screening must be integrated into a global approach, as the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) of the World Health Organization (WHO), in order to be more relevant and effective.

To assess anatomical and functional outcomes after switching from dexamethasone implant (DEXi) to fluocinolone acetonide implant (FAci) in 113 diabetic macular edema eyes, a multicentric retrospective observational study was conducted. Seventy-five eyes (73.5%) were switched 1−8 weeks after their last DEXi. The mean best-corrected visual acuity improved to 59.8 letters at month 4 and remained stable during the follow-up. The mean central macular thickness (CMT) significantly decreased during the follow-up, with a minimum of 320.9 µm at month 3. The baseline CMT was higher in eyes that received the last DEXi >8 weeks versus <8 weeks before the first FAci (p < 0.021). After FAci injection, additional treatments were needed in 37 (32.7%) eyes. A longer diabetes duration (p = 0.009), a longer time between the last DEXi and the first FAci (p = 0.035), and a high baseline CMT (p = 0.003) were risk factors for additional treatments. The mean intraocular pressure was <19 mmHg at all timepoints, with no difference between eyes receiving the last DEXi ≤8 weeks or >8 weeks before the switch. Switching from DEXi to FAci in DME is effective and safe. A short time between the last DEXi and the first FAci reduced CMT fluctuations and the need for early additional treatments.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate real-life efficacy, safety, and treatment patterns with the dexamethasone intravitreal implant (DEX) in posterior segment inflammation due to non-infectious uveitis (treatment-naïve or not) in French clinics. METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter, observational, non-comparative, post-reimbursement study, consecutive patients with posterior segment inflammation due to non-infectious uveitis were enrolled and evaluated at baseline (day 0). Those who received DEX on day 0 were re-evaluated at months 2, 6, and 18. Retreatment with DEX and/or alternative therapies was allowed during follow-up. PRIMARY OUTCOME: patients (%) with at least a 15-letter gain in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 2 months. Secondary outcomes included patients (%) with at least 15-letter BCVA gains at 6 and 18 months; mean BCVA change from baseline at 2, 6, and 18 months; and patients (%) retreated, mean central retinal thickness (CRT), and adverse events (AEs) at all post-baseline visits. RESULTS: Ninety-seven of 245 enrolled patients with posterior segment inflammation due to non-infectious uveitis (80% previously treated) and disease duration of 5 years (average) received DEX on day 0 and were included in efficacy analyses. At month 2 (n = 91), 20.5% of patients (95% CI 12.0-28.9) gained at least 15 letters from a baseline mean of 60.9 letters; the mean gain was 6.2 letters (95% CI 3.5-8.9). At month 6, 50.0% (n = 38/76) of patients did not receive alternative treatment or DEX retreatment, mostly because inflammation had sufficiently subsided (n = 27/38, 71.1%). Although early study termination prevented efficacy analysis at 18 months (n = 12), CRT reductions persisted throughout follow-up. From baseline to month 18, 21/245 (8.6%) patients had DEX-related AEs; 17/245 (6.9%) had ocular hypertension (most common AE). CONCLUSION: LOUVRE 2 confirms DEX efficacy on visual acuity and CRT in predominantly DEX-pretreated patients with relatively old/stabilized uveitis. DEX tolerability was consistent with known/published data, confirming treatment benefits in posterior segment inflammation due to non-infectious uveitis. GOV IDENTIFIER: NCT02951975.

PURPOSE: The intravitreal dexamethasone implant (DEX-I) is an alternative to anti-VEGF for the first-line treatment of diabetic macular oedema (DME). However, several questions remain regarding its routine use and its place in certain situations not always specified in current recommendations. A national consensus approach was, therefore, initiated by French retinal experts. METHODS: An iterative Delphi consensus approach was used. A steering committee (SC) of seven experts analysed data from the literature to formulate statements divided into five key areas of treatment. These statements were submitted to the independent and anonymous electronic vote of 87 French retina experts among whom 39 expressed their opinion and therefore constituted the voting panel. RESULTS: After two rounds of voting, 22 and 7 of 38 statements received a strong consensus and a good consensus, respectively. The consensus level was higher for statements regarding first-line indications and safety of DEX-I compared to those regarding efficacy assessment, reprocessing time or pathophysiological biomarkers. The panellists recommended the preferential use of DEX-I for patients with limited availability for multiple injections, those who needed to undergo cataract surgery or who had a recent cardiovascular history, and as a therapeutic alternative to anti-VEGF in patients with a history of vitrectomy, retinal serous detachment, hyper-reflective points or dry exudates in optical coherence tomography (OCT). However, some statements proposed by SC experts were not validated. CONCLUSION: This study provides some key recommendations to clinicians treating diabetic macular oedema, which may be useful when using intravitreal dexamethasone implants in daily practice.

This study aimed to examine whether the cortical processing of emotional faces is modulated by the computerization of face stimuli ("avatars") in a group of 25 healthy participants. Subjects were passively viewing 128 static and dynamic facial expressions of female and male actors and their respective avatars in neutral or fearful conditions. Event-related potentials (ERPs), as well as alpha and theta event-related synchronization and desynchronization (ERD/ERS), were derived from the EEG that was recorded during the task. All ERP features, except for the very early N100, differed in their response to avatar and actor faces. Whereas the N170 showed differences only for the neutral avatar condition, later potentials (N300 and LPP) differed in both emotional conditions (neutral and fear) and the presented agents (actor and avatar). In addition, we found that the avatar faces elicited significantly stronger reactions than the actor face for theta and alpha oscillations. Especially theta EEG frequencies responded specifically to visual emotional stimulation and were revealed to be sensitive to the emotional content of the face, whereas alpha frequency was modulated by all the stimulus types. We can conclude that the computerized avatar faces affect both, ERP components and ERD/ERS and evoke neural effects that are different from the ones elicited by real faces. This was true, although the avatars were replicas of the human faces and contained similar characteristics in their expression.

BACKGROUND: The Catquest-9SF questionnaire is a patient reported outcome measure that quantifies the visual benefits from cataract surgery. The purpose of this study was to translate and adapt the Catquest-9SF questionnaire for France, to assess its psychometric properties via Rasch analysis, and to assess its validity when completed using an electronic notepad. METHODS: The Catquest-9SF questionnaire was translated following the guidelines of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research. Catquest-9SF and clinical data were collected from patients before and after routine cataract surgery. All questionnaire data were collected via an electronic notepad. Rasch analysis was performed to assess psychometric properties, and sensitivity to change was analysed for patients with complete paired pre- and post-operative questionnaires. RESULTS: A complete filled-in preoperative questionnaire was obtained for 848 patients. Rasch analysis showed good precision (person separation: 2.32, person reliability: 0.84), ordered category probability curves, no item misfit, and unidimensionality. The respondents were slightly more able than the level of item difficulty (targeting: -1.12 logits). Sensitivity was analysed on 211 paired questionnaires, and the postoperative questionnaires showed a clear ceiling effect. The effect size was 2.6. The use of an electronic notepad for completing the questionnaire worked out very well after some adjustments. CONCLUSIONS: The French version of Catquest-9SF has good psychometric properties and is suitable for use in French-speaking patients. The use of the Catquest-9SF questionnaire in an electronic format showed good validity.

PURPOSE: To report visual and anatomical outcomes and determine predictors of good visual acuity (VA) recovery after macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD). METHODS: Prospective multicentre study including 115 eyes from 115 patients successfully operated on for RD, with assessment of VA and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) macular images at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery. RESULTS: Over the follow-up period, VA significantly improved from median [IQR] 62 [46; 72] ETDRS letters at 1 month to 75 [67; 80] ETDRS letters at 12 months (p < 0.001) with a concomitant decreased number of eyes with any SD-OCT lesions (p < 0.001). The presence of subretinal fluid (SRF) significantly decreased (p < 0.001), as did the number of photoreceptor (PR) layer lesions (p = 0.04). At 12 months, lesions in the PR layer and poor VA recovery were significantly associated with a longer time to surgery (p = 0.007 and p < 0.001, respectively). The rate of patients without PR lesions increased from 40.9% at 1 month to 60.0% at 6 months and 73.9% at 12 months (p < 0.001). The incidence of epiretinal membrane (ERM) significantly increased (p < 0.001), while cystoid macular oedema (CME) remained stable over time. Visual acuity (VA) at 3 months postoperatively was a good reflection of final VA recovery (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Visual acuity (VA) improved in parallel with the decreasing number of eyes with SD-OCT lesions after macula-off rhegmatogenous RD. A long time to surgery was the only preoperative factor associated with poor VA recovery after retinal detachment surgery.
