RESUMO

In recent years, the application of minimal residual disease (MRD) in solid tumors has gained widespread attention. MRD typically refers to the presence of residual cancer cells that remain undetectable by imaging after curative treatments, such as surgical resection. The presence of MRD post-surgery is significantly associated with an increased risk of tumor recurrence. In colorectal cancer, circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) serves as an effective marker for assessing MRD, particularly in non-metastatic (stages I-III) colorectal cancer. As a real-time, accurate, and convenient biomarker, ctDNA can effectively predict tumor recurrence, guide postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy decisions, and provide crucial information for recurrence monitoring. The application prospects of ctDNA detection technology are vast, promising more precise and individualized treatment plans for colorectal cancer patients. This article comprehensively analyzes the progress in the application of ctDNA for detecting MRD in non-metastatic colorectal cancer patients, elaborates on its guiding role in clinical treatment decisions, and envisions the future development directions in this field.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate the senescent phenotypes of human corneal endothelial cells (hCEnCs) upon treatment with ultraviolet (UV)-A. METHODS: We assessed cell morphology, senescence-associated ß-galactosidase (SA-ß-gal) activity, cell proliferation and expression of senescence markers (p16 and p21) in hCEnCs exposed to UV-A radiation, and senescent hCEnCs induced by ionizing radiation (IR) were used as positive controls. We performed RNA sequencing and proteomics analyses to compare gene and protein expression profiles between UV-A- and IR-induced senescent hCEnCs, and we also compared the results to non-senescent hCEnCs. RESULTS: Cells exposed to 5 J/cm2 of UV-A or to IR exhibited typical senescent phenotypes, including enlargement, increased SA-ß-gal activity, decreased cell proliferation and elevated expression of p16 and p21. RNA-Seq analysis revealed that 83.9% of the genes significantly upregulated and 82.6% of the genes significantly downregulated in UV-A-induced senescent hCEnCs overlapped with the genes regulated in IR-induced senescent hCEnCs. Proteomics also revealed that 93.8% of the proteins significantly upregulated in UV-A-induced senescent hCEnCs overlapped with those induced by IR. In proteomics analyses, senescent hCEnCs induced by UV-A exhibited elevated expression levels of several factors part of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, where senescence was induced by UV-A, a more physiological stress for hCEnCs compared to IR, we determined that UV-A modulated the expression of many genes and proteins typically altered upon IR treatment, a more conventional method of senescence induction, even though UV-A also modulated specific pathways unrelated to IR.

The stable manipulation, high undercooling, and thermophysical property measurement of the liquid Nb84.1Si15.9 refractory alloy were successfully achieved by the electrostatic levitation technique on board the China Space Station. By controlling the superheating temperature, a maximum liquid undercooling up to 421 K (0.18 TL) was obtained in the space environment, and two distinct solidification paths with different recalescence features were realized at metastable undercooled states. The liquid density and the ratio of specific heat to emissivity were measured in a wide temperature range from 1841 to 2346 K, which displayed linear and quadratic relations vs temperature, respectively. The liquid emissivity was further deduced from the specific heat of the liquid alloy calculated by molecular dynamics simulation. In addition, both the density and structural characteristics of the undercooled liquid alloy were also analyzed by MD calculations.

PURPOSE: The ocular surface microenvironment changes with aging. However, it remains unclear if cellular senescence influences the ocular surface. We investigated the presence of p16INK4a-expressing senescent cells in healthy human conjunctiva. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical and experimental. METHODS: Healthy conjunctival tissue samples were obtained from middle-aged and elderly subjects. RT-qPCR was performed to assess the expression of senescence markers CDKN2A (p16INK4a) and CDKN1A (p21CIP1/WAF1) and immunostaining was performed to examine the expression of the senescence marker p16INK4a, stem cell markers Ki67 and p63, tight-junction marker ZO-1. RESULTS: Our study involved 19 conjunctival tissue samples (10 elderly and 9 middle-aged), mean age [elderly: 75.8 ± 3.7 years (72-81), middle-aged: 52.7 ± 7 years (38-59)], sex (elderly: 3 men, 7 women; middle-aged: 3 men, 6 women). The expression of p16INK4a was significantly increased at the RNA level in the elderly compared to middle-aged (p < 0.05). Positivity rate of p16INK4a was significantly elevated in the elderly (15.0 ± 7.8%) compared to middle-aged (0.2 ± 0.6%) (p < 0.05). Positivity rate of Ki67and p63 was significantly reduced in the elderly (1.7 ± 1.7% and 16.5 ± 9.5%) compared to middle-aged (3.9 ± 1.8% and 24.7 ± 5.7%) (p < 0.05). ZO-1 expression was reduced in tissue samples showing p16INK4a-positivity but retained in tissue samples in which p16INK4a was undetectable. CONCLUSIONS: Senescent cells accumulate with age in the conjunctival epithelium, accompanied by a decrease in Ki67, p63 and ZO-1 expressing cells.

BCL-2 family members are known to be implicated in survival in numerous biological settings. Here, we provide evidence that in injury and repair processes in lungs, BCL-2 mainly acts to attenuate endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and limit extracellular matrix accumulation. Days after an intratracheal bleomycin challenge, mice lose a fraction of their alveolar type II epithelium from terminal ER stress driven by activation of the critical ER sensor and stress effector IRE1α. This fraction is dramatically increased by BCL-2 inhibition, because IRE1α activation is dependent on its physical association with the BCL-2-proapoptotic family member BAX, and we found BCL-2 to disrupt this association in vitro. In vivo, navitoclax (a BCL-2/BCL-xL inhibitor) given 15-21 days after bleomycin challenge evoked strong activation of IRE-1α in mesenchymal cells and markers of ER stress, but not apoptosis. Remarkably, after BCL-2 inhibition, bleomycin-exposed mice demonstrated persistent collagen accumulation at Day 42, compared with resolution in controls. Enhanced fibrosis proved to be due to the RNAase activity of IRE1α downregulating MRC2 mRNA and protein, a mediator of collagen turnover. The critical role of MRC2 was confirmed in precision-cut lung slice cultures of Day-42 lungs from bleomycin-exposed wild-type and MRC2 null mice. Soluble and tissue collagen accumulated in precision-cut lung slice cultures from navitoclax-treated, bleomycin-challenged mice compared with controls, in a manner nearly identical to that of challenged but untreated MRC2 null mice. Thus, apart from mitochondrial-based antiapoptosis, BCL-2 functions to attenuate ER stress responses, fostering tissue homeostasis and injury repair.

The determination of liquid atomic structure and thermophysical properties is essential for investigating the physical characteristics and phase transitions of refractory alloys. However, due to the stringent experimental requirements and underdeveloped interatomic potentials, acquiring such information through experimentation or simulation remains challenging. Here, an active learning method incorporating a deep neural network was established to generate the interatomic potential of the Hf_{76}W_{24} refractory alloy. Then the achieved potential was applied to investigate the liquid atomic structure and thermophysical properties of this alloy over a wide temperature range. The simulation results revealed the distinctive bonding preferences among atoms, that is, Hf atoms exhibited a strong tendency for conspecific bonding, while W atoms preferred to form an interspecific bonding. The analysis of short-range order (SRO) in the liquid alloy revealed a significant proportion of icosahedral (ICO) and distorted ICO structures, which even exceeded 30% in the undercooled state. As temperature decreased, SRO structures demonstrated an increase in larger coordination number (CN) clusters and a decrease in smaller CNs. The alterations of the atomic structure indicated that the liquid alloy becomes more ordered, densely packed, and energetically favorable with decreasing temperature, consistent with the obtained fact: Both density and surface tension increase linearly. The simulated thermophysical properties were close to experimental values with minor deviations of 2.8% for density and 3.4% for surface tension. The consistency of the thermophysical properties further attested to the accuracy and reliability of active learning simulation.

BACKGROUND: Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is still a public health emergency of international concern. However, whether pregnancy and menopause impact the severity of COVID-19 remain unclear. AIM: This study is performed to investigate the truth. DESIGN: Study appraisal and synthesis follows PRISMA guideline. Meta-analysis is performed in random-effects model. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane database, Central, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO COVID-19 database and WHO-ICTRP are searched until 28 March 2023. RESULTS: In total, 57 studies (4 640 275 COVID-19 women) were analyzed. Pregnant women were at a lower risk of severe COVID-19, intensive care unit (ICU) admission and disease mortality compared to those nonpregnant women with comparable comorbidities. In contrast, pregnant women with more prepregnancy comorbidities were at a higher risk of severe COVID-19, ICU admission and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). In addition, pregnant women with pregnancy complications had a significantly increased risk of severe COVID-19 and ICU admission. Menopause increased COVID-19 severity, IMV requirement and disease mortality. Hormone replacement therapy inhibited COVID-19 severity in postmenopausal women. Premenopausal and postmenopausal women had a lower chance of severe illness than age-matched men. The impact of pregnancy on COVID-19 severity was significant in Americans and Caucasians, whereas the effect of menopause on COVID-19 severity was only significant in Chinese. CONCLUSIONS: Pregnancy and menopause are protective and risk factors for severe COVID-19, respectively. The protective role of pregnancy on COVID-19 is minimal and could be counteracted or masked by prepregnancy or pregnancy comorbidities. The administration of estrogen and progesterone may prevent severe COVID-19.

1. A new assessment method for duck footpad dermatitis (FPD) evaluation was developed, combining visual and histological characters using the images and sections of 400 ducks' feet at 340 d of age. All ducks were graded as G0 (healthy), G1 (mild), G2 (moderate) and G3 (severe) according to the degree of FPD.2. To reveal the potential biomarkers in serum related to duck FPD, non-targeted metabolomics and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis were used to explore differential metabolites in each group.3. There were 57, 91 and 210 annotated differential metabolites in groups G1, G2 and G3 compared with G0, which meant that the severity of FPD increased in line with the number of metabolites. Four metabolites, L-phenylalanine, L-arginine, L-leucine and L-lysine, were considered potential biomarkers related to FPD.4. KEGG enrichment analysis showed that the FPD was mainly involved in glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, the pentose phosphate pathway and amino acid metabolism. These are related to production metabolism and can affect the physiological activities of ducks, which might explain the decrease in production performance.

Dry eye is a multifactorial and common age-related ocular surface disease. Dyslipidemia has been reported to be involved in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). However, it has not been clearly identified which lipid abnormality is responsible for MGD. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we discuss how lipid profile changes with aging is responsible for MGD development. METHODS: An article search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. Eleven studies involving dyslipidemia in patients with MGD were identified. Five out of eleven studies were further analyzed with meta-analysis. The preferred reporting items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) reporting guidelines were followed. Study-specific estimates (prevalence of dyslipidemia in MGD patients) were combined using one-group meta-analysis in a random-effects model. RESULTS: Meta-analysis revealed that high total cholesterol (TC) and high triglycerides (TG) were significantly associated with MGD prevalence, with odds ratios of 5.245 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.582-17.389; p < 0.001) and 3.264 (95% CI: 1.047-10.181; p < 0.001), respectively, but high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were not identified. Systematic review found that the percentage of MGD patients with TC ≥ 200 mg/dL ranged from 20.0-77.6%, TG ≥ 150 mg/dL ranged from 8.3-89.7%, whereas, in the aged-match-adjusted controls, TC range of 200 mg/dL or higher and TG range of 150 mg/dL was 6.1-45.1% and 1.1-47.8%, respectively. The severity of MGD was higher with dyslipidemia. CONCLUSION: Dyslipidemia and higher TC and TG are significant risk factors for MGD.

Objective: To examine the association of greenness exposure with waist circumference (WC) and central obesity in older adults in China. Methods: Based on the cross-sectional data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey in 2017-2018, 14 056 participants aged 65 years and over were included. Demographic characteristics, lifestyle, WC, and other information were collected through a questionnaire and physical examination. Based on the satellite monitoring data of moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) provided by NASA, the annual mean of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) within a radius of 1 000 meters was obtained as the measurement value of greenness exposure. Multivariate linear regression model, multivariate logistic regression model, and restricted cubic splines (RCS) model were used to analyze the association and dose-response relationship between greenness exposure and WC and central obesity in older adults in China. Results: A total of 14 056 participants were enrolled with a median age of 84.0 years [IQR: 75.0-94.0 years]. About 45.0% (6 330) of them were male and 48.6% (5 853) were illiterate. There were 10 964 (78.0%) participants from rural. The mean of WC was (84.4±10.8) cm. Central obesity accounted for 60.2% (8 465), and the NDVI range was (-0.06, 0.78). After adjusting for confounding factors, the multivariate linear regression model showed that the change value of WC in the urban group [ß (95%CI):-0.49 (-0.93, -0.06)] was smaller than that in the rural [-0.78 (-0.98, -0.58)] for every 0.1 unit increase in NDVI (Pinteraction=0.022). Compared with the Q1 group in NDVI, WC of Q2 and Q3 groups in rural decreased, and the ß (95%CI) values were-1.74 (-2.5, -0.98) and-2.78 (-3.55, -2.00), respectively. The multivariate logistic regression model showed that after adjusting for confounding factors, the risk of central obesity decreased for urban and rural older adults with an increase of 0.1 unit in NDVI, and the OR (95%CI) values were 0.87 (0.80, 0.95) and 0.86 (0.82, 0.89), respectively (Pinteraction=0.284). Compared with the Q1 group in NDVI, the risk of central obesity in the Q2 and Q3 groups in rural was lower, and the OR (95%CI) values were 0.68 (0.58, 0.80) and 0.57 (0.49, 0.68), respectively. The results of the multivariate regression model with RCS showed that there was a non-linear association of NDVI with WC (Pnonlinear=0.006) and central obesity (Pnonlinear=0.025). Conclusion: Greenness exposure is negatively associated with WC and central obesity in older adults in China.

BACKGROUND: Acute pancreatitis (AP) has variable clinical courses. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the safety, efficacy, and impact of epidural anaesthesia (EA) use in AP. METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS and Cochrane library databases were systematically searched between 1980 and 2022 using the PRISMA guidelines, to identify observational and comparative studies reporting on EA in AP. The meta-analysis was performed in R Foundation for Statistical Computing using the meta R Package for Meta-Analysis. RESULTS: A total of 9 studies with 2006 patients of which 726 (36%) patients had EA were included. All studies demonstrated high safety and feasibility of EA in AP with no reported major local or neurological complications. One randomised controlled trial demonstrated an improvement in pain severity using a 0-10 visual analogue scale (VAS) at the outset (1.6 in EA vs 3.5 in non-EA, P = 0.02) and on day 10 (0.2 in EA vs 2.33 in non-EA, P = 0.034). There was also improvement in pancreatic perfusion with EA measured with computerised tomography 13 (43%) in EA vs 2 (7%) in non-EA, P = 0.003. The need for ventilatory support and overall mortality was lower in EA patients 40 (19%) vs 285 (24%) P = 0.025 (OR: 0.49, 95% CI: 0.28-0.84) and 16 (7%) vs 214 (20%), P = 0.050 (OR: 0.39, 95% CI: 0.15-1.00), respectively. CONCLUSION: EA is infrequently used for pain management in AP and yet the available evidence suggests that it is safe and effective in reducing pain severity, improving pancreatic perfusion, and decreasing mortality.

RESUMO

Robotic gastrectomy (RG) has always been a hot topic in the field of minimally invasive surgery for gastric cancer. More and more studies have confirmed that short- and long-term outcomes of RG are similar to those of laparoscopic gastrectomy. Robotic surgical systems have more advantages in specific regional lymph node dissection. More delicate operation can reduce intraoperative blood loss and the incidence of postoperative complications. Robotic surgical systems are also more ergonomically designed. However, there are also some problems such as high surgical cost, lack of tactile feedback and prolonged total operation time. In the future, robotic surgical system may be further developed in the direction of miniaturization, intelligence and modularity. At the same time, the robotic surgical system deeply integrated with artificial intelligence technology may realize the automation of some operation steps to some extent.

Antiretroviral drugs have dramatically improved the prognosis of HIV-infected patients, with strikingly reduced morbidity and mortality. However, long-term use can be associated with signs of premature aging. Highly active antiretroviral therapy generally comprises two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), with one of three additional antiretroviral drug classes, including protease inhibitors (PIs). One commonality between mitochondrial dysfunction (induced by NRTIs) and defects in lamin A (induced by PIs) is they can cause or accelerate cellular senescence, a state of essentially irreversible growth arrest, and the secretion of many bioactive molecules collectively known as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). We hypothesized that senescent cells increase following treatment with certain HIV therapies. We compared the effects of two distinct HIV PIs: ritonavir-boosted atazanavir (ATV/r) and ritonavir-boosted darunavir (DRN/r), used in combination treatments for HIV infection. Upon ATV/r, but not DRN/r, treatment, cells arrested growth, displayed multiple features of senescence, and expressed significantly upregulated levels of many SASP factors. Furthermore, mice receiving sustained ATV/r treatment showed an increase in senescent cells and age-related decline in physiological function. However, removing treatment reversed the features of senescence observed in vivo and cell culture. Given how these features disappeared with drug removal, certain features of senescence may not be prognostic as defined by an irreversible growth arrest. Importantly, for patients that are treated or have been treated with ATV/r, our data suggest that switching to another PI that does not promote premature aging conditions (DRN/r) may improve the associated age-related complications.

Objective: To investigate the clinical diagnostic value of multi-target stool fecal immunochemical test-DNA (FIT-DNA) test in colorectal cancer (CRC) and advanced adenoma (AA). Methods: A total of 235 patients who were undergoing colonoscopy or colorectal cancer surgery in the Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from April 2021 to January 2022 were prospectively enrolled. There were 141 males and 94 females, with an average age of (55±13) years (22-86). The patients were divided into two groups, including 215 patients who were first diagnosed but not treated (86 cases of CRC, 12 cases of AA, 25 cases of non-advanced adenoma, 8 cases of hyperplastic or other polyps and 84 apparently healthy cases) and 20 patients in the intervention group (2 cases with a history of CRC surgery, 6 cases with a history of endoscopic surgery, 4 non-CRC patients with special diseases and 8 cases with a history of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy). Fresh stool samples were collected before intestinal preparation or surgery for FIT-DNA test using the matching kit for sample processing and nucleic acid purification. KRAS mutation and methylation of BMP3 and NDRG4 genes were detected by fluorescence probe method, and FIT method was employed to detect fecal occult blood. Colonoscopy or pathological biopsy results were used as the gold standard. And the screening and diagnostic efficacy of FIT-DNA test for colorectal cancer and advanced adenoma were evaluated by receiver operating curve (ROC). Results: The sensitivity of FIT-DNA test for early colorectal cancer and advanced adenoma was 7/7 and 8/12, respectively. And the negative predictive value was 98.1% (104/106) and 93.7% (104/111), respectively. The overall screening sensitivity for both early colorectal cancer and advanced adenoma was 15/19, and the negative predictive value was 96.3% (104/108). Besides, the area under the curves (AUCs) were 0.982 (95%CI: 0.960-1.000, P<0.05), 0.758 (95%CI: 0.592-0.924, P<0.05) and 0.841 (95%CI: 0.724-0.957, P<0.05), respectively. Moreover, the diagnostic sensitivity of FIT-DNA test was 98.8% (85/86) for colorectal cancer, 8/12 for advanced adenoma, and 94.9% (93/98) for both colorectal cancer and advanced adenoma, with a specificity of 88.9% (104/117). The AUCs were 0.968 (95%CI: 0.937-0.997, P<0.05), 0.758 (95%CI: 0.592-0.924, P<0.05) and 0.942 (95%CI: 0.905-0.979, P<0.05), respectively. After the inclusion of intervention group, the overall diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of FIT-DNA test was 91.6% (98/107) and 89.1% (114/128), respectively. Conclusion: FIT-DNA test has a high early screening and diagnostic efficacy for colorectal cancer.

Objective: To evaluate the methodology of the published systematic reviews and Meta-analyses (SR/MA) on efficacy and safety of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines. Methods: We conducted a retrieval for literatures published as of December 10, 2021 in English databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of science) and Chinese databases (CNKI, Wanfang data, VIP, Sinomed). Two reviewers independently screened literatures and extracted data. The methodology of included SR/MA papers was assessed by A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Review-2 (AMSTAR-2) tool in 16 items. Results: A total 22 SR/MA papers were included, in which 3 (13.6%) had low quality and 19 (86.4%) had very low quality. The main problems of these SR/MA included having no definite PICO (Participants, intervention, control and outcome), providing no preliminary research protocol, no list of excluded studies and justify the exclusions, making no evaluation and explanation or discussion of the risk of bias of original studies, no adequate evaluation of publication bias and discuss its likely impact on the results, etc. Conclusion: SR/MA for the efficacy and safety of COVID-19 vaccines had varied methodological deficiencies, further improvements are needed.

INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of data on the incidence, risk factors, and treatment of splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) in acute pancreatitis (AP). METHODS: All AP admissions between 2018 and 2021 across North East of England were included. Anticoagulation was considered in the presence of superior mesenteric vein/portal vein (SMV/PV) thrombus or progressive splenic vein thrombus (SpVT). The impact of such a selective anticoagulation policy, on vein recanalisation rates and bleeding complications were explored. RESULTS: 401 patients (median age 58) were admitted with AP. 109 patients (27.2%) developed SVT. The splenic vein in isolation was the most common site (n = 46) followed by SMV/PV (n = 36) and combined SMV/PV and SpVT (n = 27). On multivariate logistic regression alcohol aetiology (OR 2.64, 95% CI [1.43-5.01]) and >50% necrosis of the pancreas (OR 14.6, 95% CI [1.43-383.9]) increased the risk of developing SVT. The rate of recanalization with anticoagulation was higher for PVT (66.7%; 42/63) than in SpVT (2/11; p = 0.003). 5/74 of anticoagulated patients developed bleeding complications while 0/35 patients not anticoagulated had bleeding complications (p = 0.4). CONCLUSION: The risk of SVT increases with AP severity and with extent of pancreatic necrosis. A selective anticoagulation policy for PVT and progressive SpVT in AP is associated with favourable outcomes with no increased risk of bleeding complications.

Most effector T cells will undergo programmed apoptosis after an immune response and some of them may become memory T cells. According to the distribution and functional status, the memory T cells can be divided into effector central memory T cells (TCM), effector memory T cells (TEM) and tissue-resident memory T cells (TRM) cells. TRM cells, including CD4+ TRM and CD8+ TRM cells, colonize various barrier surfaces and are no longer involved in lymphocyte recycling, closely monitored for local perturbations in homeostasis throughout the body as a critical component of the first defense line. When pathogenic microorganisms invade the body, TRM cells can quickly produce a defense response to initiate innate immunity and adaptive immunity by producing cytokines or killer molecules to resist viral and bacterial infections. In addition, TRM cells are also involved in cancer surveillance and play an essential role in maintaining cancer-immune equilibrium. The high frequency of TRM cells in tumor tissues often means favorable survival for patients. The latest research proves that TRM cells also play an important role in vaccine development and pathological features of COVID-19. This article will summarize the biological functions of TRM cells and aims at providing references for further research on their mechanism and for targeting the best treatment of clinical disease.

Existing single-axis acoustic levitation devices with an axisymmetric reflector can manipulate particles in a variety of ways. However, the mechanism by which particles are suspended in a single-axis acoustic levitator with a non-axisymmetric reflector remains poorly understood. This work addresses this issue by proposing a novel single-axis ultrasonic levitator design that includes a flat plane emitter and a screw-plane reflector. The node positions of the standing wave formed in this levitator were predicted by calculating the Gor'kov potential according to a numerical model. The analysis results demonstrate that the nodes were distributed off-axis and their positions varied in a spiral manner when changing the distance between the emitter and reflector. Corresponding experiments based on the proposed design were also conducted, and the results indicated that the distance changes between the emitter and reflector could induce some spiral trajectories of a polyethylene-foam particle placed in the ultrasonic field. Moreover, the trajectory of the suspended particle was found to distribute along a conical surface centered on the central axis of this device. This work provides a new approach for ultrasonic particle manipulation by changing the geometry of the reflector.

PURPOSE: Dry eye disease (DED) is a common age-related ocular surface disease. However, it is unknown how aging influences the ocular surface microenvironment. This systematic review aims to investigate how the aging process changes the ocular surface microenvironment and impacts the development of DED. METHODS: An article search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. 44 studies reporting on age-related ocular changes and 14 large epidemiological studies involving the prevalence of DED were identified. 8 out of 14 epidemiological studies were further analyzed with meta-analysis. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) reporting guidelines were followed. Study-specific estimates (impact of aging on the prevalence of DED) were combined using one-group meta-analysis in a random-effects model. RESULTS: Meta-analysis revealed the prevalence of DED in the elderly aged 60 years old or older was 5519 of 60107 (9.2%) and the odds ratio of aging compared to younger age was 1.313 (95% confidence interval [CI]; 1.107, 1.557). With increasing age, the integrity of the ocular surface and tear film stability decreased. Various inflammatory cells, including senescent-associated T-cells, infiltrated the ocular surface epithelium, lacrimal gland, and meibomian gland, accompanied by senescence-related changes, including accumulation of 8-OHdG and lipofuscin-like inclusions, increased expression of p53 and apoptosis-related genes, and decreased Ki67 positive cells. CONCLUSIONS: The aging process greatly impacts the ocular surface microenvironment, consequently leading to DED.
