RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The adverse effects of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) on physical, emotional, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) remain primarily unrecognized, especially in resource-limited settings. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to characterize the HRQoL of patients with PAH in this area and also identify the potential role of clinically relevant characteristics, including the 6-min walk distance test (6MWD), WHO-Functional Classification (WHO-FC), and mental health in the occurrence of lowering quality of life. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional observational study. METHODS: Inpatients with PAH were chosen from a tertiary hospital located in Gansu province, China. All participants were interviewed face-by-face by using questionnaires, including items from the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), the self-rating anxiety scale, and the self-rating depression scale. Data on demographic and clinically relevant characteristics, including WHO-FC and 6MWD, were also collected by tracing medical recorders. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the association between demographic, clinically relevant characteristics data, and physical component summary (PCS) or mental component summary (MCS) in SF-36. RESULTS: Of the 152 participants, SF-36 differed significantly from Chinese norms in all eight domains, with role-physical (21.55 ± 9.87) less than one-third of the norm (88.79 ± 28.49). Multiple linear regression results showed that the factors with the greatest impact on PCS were anxiety scores (ß = -0.22, p = 0.001), followed by WHO-FC (ß = -0.16, p = 0.014) and 6MWD (ß = 0.15, p = 0.036). The factors with the greatest impact on MCS were WHO-FC (ß = -0.30, p < 0.001), followed by anxiety (ß = -0.23, p = 0.001) and depression scores (ß = -0.16, p = 0.013). CONCLUSION: HRQoL was substantially reduced among PAH patients in the resource-limited area, mainly the physiological functions. WHO-FC and anxiety scores were independently associated with both PCS and MCS in SF-36. Clinicians should make reasonable rehabilitation programs and plans for patients according to their cardiac function grade and the severity of clinical symptoms. In addition, psychological interventions should also be taken, especially for those with anxiety symptoms, so as to improve their HRQoL.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhea is one of the most common ailments affecting young and middle-aged women, significantly impacting their quality of life. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers unique advantages in treating dysmenorrhea. However, an accurate diagnosis is essential to ensure correct treatment. This research integrates the age-old wisdom of TCM with modern Machine Learning (ML) techniques to enhance the precision and efficiency of dysmenorrhea syndrome differentiation, a pivotal process in TCM diagnostics and treatment planning. METHODS: A total of 853 effective cases of dysmenorrhea were retrieved from the CNKI database, including patients' syndrome types, symptoms, and features, to establish the TCM information database of dysmenorrhea. Subsequently, 42 critical features were isolated from a potential set of 86 using a selection procedure augmented by Python's Scikit-Learn Library. Various machine learning models were employed, including Logistic Regression, Random Forest Classifier, Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), each chosen for their potential to unearth complex patterns within the data. RESULTS: Based on accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics, SVM emerged as the most effective model, showcasing an impressive precision of 98.29% and an accuracy of 98.24%. This model's analytical prowess not only highlighted the critical features pivotal to the syndrome differentiation process but also stands to significantly aid clinicians in formulating personalized treatment strategies by pinpointing nuanced symptoms with high precision. CONCLUSION: The study paves the way for a synergistic approach in TCM diagnostics, merging ancient wisdom with computational acuity, potentially innovating the diagnosis and treatment mode of TCM. Despite the promising outcomes, further research is needed to validate these models in real-world settings and extend this approach to other diseases addressed by TCM.

RESUMO

Differential diagnosis of erythroderma is challenging in dermatology, especially in differentiating erythrodermic cutaneous T-cell lymphoma from erythrodermic inflammatory dermatoses. This study retrospectively reviewed the peripheral blood flow cytometric results of 73 patients diagnosed with erythroderma at Peking University First Hospital from 2014 to 2019. The flow cytometry antibody panel included white blood cell markers, T-cell markers, B-cell markers, T-cell activation markers, and T helper cell differentiation markers. Features of the cell surface antigens were compared between 34 patients with erythrodermic cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and 39 patients with erythrodermic inflammatory dermatoses. The percentage of HLA-DR+/CD4+T cells was the most pronounced marker to distinguish erythrodermic cutaneous T-cell lymphoma from erythrodermic inflammatory dermatoses, with a threshold of 20.85% (sensitivity 96.77%, specificity 70.37%, p = 0.000, area under the curve (AUC) 0.882), suggesting its potential capability in the differential diagnosis of erythrodermic cutaneous T-cell lymphoma from erythrodermic inflammatory dermatoses. Moreover, in contrast to erythrodermic inflammatory dermatoses, the percentage of Th17 cells was significantly downregulated in erythrodermic cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (p = 0.001), demonstrating a dysregulated immune environment in erythrodermic cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

RESUMO

Current studies of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) have shown a significant diagnostic delay. However, the causes and risk factors for this delay are not been well explored in Chinese population. This study aimed to assess the status of diagnostic delay in patients with PAH in China. Additionally, we identified factors associated with the delay. Demographic and clinical data were collected from 153 PAH patients admitted to three tertiary hospitals in Gansu, China, from March 2020 to October 2022. Based on the recorded date, the diagnostic delay was divided into patient delay and health system delay. For analysis, we divided diagnostic delay into 2 groups (≤3 years and >3 years). Factors associated with delay were identified by binary logistic regression. The median diagnostic delay was 3 years (IQR: 0.25-5.88). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that male (OR = 2.48, 95% CI: 1.10-5.58), those with junior high school or below (OR = 3.65, 95% CI: 1.36-9.78), living far away from the tertiary hospital (OR = 2.66, 95% CI: 1.14-6.18), initially visit hospital before 2018 (OR = 3.82, 95% CI: 1.68-8.71), and visit hospital at county level or below (OR = 3.80, 95% CI: 1.42-10.18) were risk factor for diagnostic delay (>3 years). Despite increased awareness, most patients with PAH in Gansu, China still experienced a delay in diagnosis of more than 3 years. Male sex, lower educational background, and being away from tertiary hospitals are risk factors for delay. Furthermore, factors impacting time-to-diagnosis and its impact should be continuously evaluated as therapeutic strategies continue to evolve and improve.

RESUMO

Importance: There are limited prognostic statistics and data available on survival outcomes for patients with mycosis fungoides (MF) in Asia. Objective: To determine the prognostic factors and survival outcomes of patients with MF among a cohort in China. Design, Setting, and Participants: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with MF who received treatment at a tertiary referral center for skin lymphoma (Peking University First Hospital, Beijing, China) from August 1, 2009, to August 31, 2021. Data were analyzed from September 1, 2021, to December 31, 2022. Main Outcomes and Measures: Overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and progression-free survival (PFS); for prognostic factors, hazard ratios (HRs), and adjusted HRs (aHRs; adjusted for sex, age, and overall TNMB [tumor, node, metastasis, blood] stage) determined using the Cox proportional hazards model. Results: The study cohort comprised 461 patients with MF (median [range] age at diagnosis, 46 [5-87] years; 275 [59.7%] men and 186 [40.3%] women; 461 [100%] Chinese). The overall 5-year rate was 82.2% for OS, 83.5% for DSS, and 79.6% for PFS. Stage-specific 5-year OS rates were 95.7% for stage IA, 93.2% for IB, 95.7% for IIA, 70.1% for IIB, 55.3% for III, and 23.6% for IV. Compared with a UK cohort, our Chinese cohort had a younger median age at diagnosis (46 years vs 54 years) and a more favorable 5-year OS (82.2% vs 75.0%); however, after adjusting for age, the discrepancy in the 5-year OS rate was diminished (77.3% vs 76.4%). Cox models revealed that unfavorable predictors of OS, PFS, and DSS, respectively, were: age older than 60 years (aHR [95% CI], 2.25 [1.28-3.96]; 2.09 [1.16-3.76]; 2.27 [1.39-3.72]); advanced TNMB stage; advanced overall stage; large-cell transformation (aHR [95% CI], 2.16 [1.17-3.99]; 2.29 [1.21-4.33]; 2.21 [1.26-3.86]); and elevated lactate dehydrogenase levels (aHR [95% CI], 3.92 [1.64-9.36]; 4.77 [1.86-12.22]; 5.05 [2.23-11.42]). Biological sex and plaque lesion type were not associated with prognosis among this study cohort. Conclusion and Relevance: The findings of this retrospective cohort study of patients with MF in China suggest that Asian patients are diagnosed at a younger age and have a higher 5-year OS compared with patients of other races in studies in other countries (predominantly White). Prognostic factors were similar to those of previous studies, except for patient sex and plaque lesion type.

RESUMO

TiO2 nanomaterials, especially one-dimensional TiO2 nanofibers fabricated by electrospinning, have received considerable attention in the past two decades, for a variety of basic applications. However, their safe use and easy recycling are still hampered by the inherently subpar mechanical performance. Here, we toughened polycrystalline TiO2 nanofibers by introducing Al3+-species at the very beginning of electrospinning. The resultant long-and-continuous TiO2 nanofibers achieved a Young's modulus of 653.8 MPa, which is ca. 25-fold higher than that of conventional TiO2 nanofibers. Within each nanofiber, amorphous Al2O3-based oxide effectively hindered the coalescence of TiO2 nanocrystals and potentially repaired the surface groves. The solid-state 17O-NMR spectra further revealed the toughening strategy on a molecular scale, where relatively flexible Ti-O-Al bonds replaced rigid O-Ti-O bonds at the interfaces of TiO2 and Al2O3. Moreover, the modified TiO2 nanofibers exhibited superb sinter-resistance, without cracking over 900 °C, which was dynamically monitored by TEM. Therefore, flexible-in-rigid TiO2 fibrous mats can be facilely folded into 3D sponges through origami art. As a potential showcase, the TiO2 sponges were demonstrated as a duarable and renewable filtrator with a high filtration efficiency of 99.97% toward PM2.5 and 99.99% toward PM10 after working for 300 min. This work provides a rational strategy to produce flexible oxide nanofibers and gives an in-depth understanding of the toughening mechanism from the macro-scale to the molecular-scale.

RESUMO

Determining the different surfaces of oxide nanocrystals is key in developing structure-property relations. In many cases, only surface geometry is considered while ignoring the influence of surroundings, such as ubiquitous water on the surface. Here we apply 17O solid-state NMR spectroscopy to explore the facet differences of morphology-controlled ceria nanocrystals considering both geometry and water adsorption. Tri-coordinated oxygen ions at the 1st layer of ceria (111), (110), and (100) facets exhibit distinct 17O NMR shifts at dry surfaces while these 17O NMR parameters vary in the presence of water, indicating its non-negligible effects on the oxide surface. Thus, the interaction between water and oxide surfaces and its impact on the chemical environment should be considered in future studies, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy is a sensitive approach for obtaining such information. The work provides new insights into elucidating the surface chemistry of oxide nanomaterials.

RESUMO

Layered double oxides (LDOs) can restore the parent layered double hydroxides (LDHs) structure under hydrous conditions, and this "memory effect" plays a critical role in the applications of LDHs, yet the detailed mechanism is still under debate. Here, we apply a strategy based on ex situ and in situ solid-state NMR spectroscopy to monitor the Mg/Al-LDO structure changes during recovery at the atomic scale. Despite the common belief that aqueous solution is required, we discover that the structure recovery can occur in a virtually solid-state process. Local structural information obtained with NMR spectroscopy shows that the recovery in aqueous solution follows dissolution-recrystallization mechanism, while the solid-state recovery is retro-topotactic, indicating a true "memory effect". The amount of water is key in determining the interactions of water with oxides, thus the memory effect mechanism. The results also provide a more environmentally friendly and economically feasible LDHs preparation route.

RESUMO

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and frailty are common health problems among the elderly. This research aims to investigate the hotspots and frontiers of the field of CVD with frailty. Data of publications between 2000 and 2021 were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) and CiteSpace was used for analyzing the hotspots and frontiers of cardiovascular diseases with frailty research from high-impact countries/regions, institutions, authors, cited references, cited journals, high-frequency keywords, and burst keywords. The results showed that the USA, England, and Canada were the leading countries/regions in research on CVD with frailty. Other countries/regions and regions lagged behind these developed countries/regions. There is a need to establish cooperation between developed countries/regions and developing countries/regions. Research hotspots focused on frailty in the elderly with CVD, exercise intervention, assessment for CVD patients with frailty, quality of life, and common diseases related to CVD with frailty. The frontier fields include care and intervention of CVD patients with frailty, social frailty, and validation of CVD with frailty.

RESUMO

ABSTRAC: OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to preliminarily and exploratorily examine the associations between childhood trauma (CT), its subtypes, and personality traits among unaffected first-degree relatives (FDR, children, or siblings) of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: The study sample included three subgroups: MDD patients (N = 85), Patients' FDRs (N = 35), and healthy control individuals (HC, N = 89). The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) was used to assess childhood trauma and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire was used to assess personality traits. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in a few personality traits (p < 0.05 for extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism) among MDD patients, FDR, and HC, and there were no significant differences between HC and FDR. In the FDR group, compared with those without CT, participants with CT scored significantly higher for neuroticism (N) (F = 3.246, p = 0.046). CT was significantly associated with N, psychoticism (P) and Lie (L), and the strongest association was between CT total score and N. Significantly positive correlations were found between N and sexual abuse (SA) (r = 0.344, p = 0.043), emotional neglect (EN) (r = 0.394, p = 0.019), physical neglect (PN) (r = 0.393, p = 0.019), and CTQ total score (r = 0.452, p = 0.006); between P and CTQ total score (r = 0.336, p = 0.049); and significant negative correlations were found between L and EN (r = -0.446, p = 0.007), CTQ total score (r = -0.375, p = 0.027). CONCLUSION: In unaffected FDRs, there were significant associations between childhood trauma and a few personality traits, including neuroticism, psychoticism, and lie, and emotional neglect was significantly associated with neuroticism.

RESUMO

Nanosheets of nickel doped SAPO-34 molecular sieves in thickness of ∼10 nm (denoted as NS-Ni-SAPO-34) has been successfully prepared through a morphology-reserved method of synthesis. A special aluminum phosphate in two-dimensional layered structure is used as precursor and converts to crystallized SAPO-34 molecular sieve, in nanosheet morphology reserved from the aluminum phosphate precursor, under hydrothermal conditions with tetraethyl orthosilicate and templates of mixed amines added. It is found that adequate amount of nickel, ∼5 wt %, added to the synthetic system is a key factor for the morphology-reserved synthesis. By characterization, the nickel is proved to be doped in the framework of the molecular sieve, which more likely helps to balance the high surface energy of nanosheet products. The NS-Ni-SAPO-34 shows excellent catalytic performance for oxidation of cyclohexanone to adipic acid by gaseous oxygen.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread worldwide. The safety of breastfeeding of SARS-CoV-2-positive women has not yet reached a consensus among the scientific community, healthcare providers, experts in lactation care, health organizations and governments. This study was conducted to summarize the latest evidence about the safety of breastfeeding among suspected/confirmed infected mothers and to summarize the recommendations on breastfeeding during COVID-19 from different organizations. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review of publications about the safety of breastfeeding among SARS-CoV-2-infected mothers was conducted. Scientific databases were searched up to 26 May 2021. The evidence was summarized into five perspectives according to a framework proposed by van de Perre et al. with certain modifications. Moreover, websites of different health organizations were visited to gather the recommendations for breastfeeding. RESULTS: The current evidence demonstrated that the majority of infants breastfed by infected mothers were negative for SARS-CoV-2. Breast milk samples from suspected/infected mothers mainly demonstrated negative results in SARS-CoV-2 viral tests. There was insufficient evidence proving the infectivity of breast milk from infected mothers. Recent studies found other transmission modalities (e.g., milk containers, skin) associated with breastfeeding. Specific antibodies in the breast milk of infected mothers were also found, implying protective effects for their breastfed children. According to van de Perre's criteria, the breast milk of infected mothers was unlikely to transmit SARS-CoV-2. Owing to the low quality of the current evidence, studies with a more robust design are needed to strengthen the conclusion regarding the safety of breastfeeding. Further studies to follow up the health status of infants who were directly breastfed by their suspected/infected mothers, to collect breast milk samples at multiple time points for viral tests and to examine specific antibodies in breast milk samples are warranted. Current recommendations on breastfeeding during COVID-19 from different organizations are controversial, while direct breastfeeding with contact precautions is generally suggested as the first choice for infected mothers. CONCLUSIONS: This review determined the safety of breastfeeding and identified the focus for further research during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recommendations on breastfeeding are suggested to be updated in a timely manner according to the latest evidence.

RESUMO

Cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL) represents a heterogeneous group of non-Hodgkin lymphoma distinguished by the presence of clonal malignant T cells. The heterogeneity of malignant T cells and the complex tumor microenvironment remain poorly characterized. With single-cell RNA analysis and bulk whole-exome sequencing on 19 skin lesions from 15 CTCL patients, we decipher the intra-tumor and inter-lesion diversity of CTCL patients and propose a multi-step tumor evolution model. We further establish a subtyping scheme based on the molecular features of malignant T cells and their pro-tumorigenic microenvironments: the TCyEM group, demonstrating a cytotoxic effector memory T cell phenotype, shows more M2 macrophages infiltration, while the TCM group, featured by a central memory T cell phenotype and adverse patient outcome, is infiltrated by highly exhausted CD8+ reactive T cells, B cells and Tregs with suppressive activities. Our results establish a solid basis for understanding the nature of CTCL and pave the way for future precision medicine for CTCL patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore potential risk factors of preoperative cognitive dysfunction in adult patients with moyamoya disease (MMD) and discuss significance of moyamoya vessels. METHODS: The author reviewed adult MMD patients harboring no parenchymal infarction or hemorrhage underwent a standardized neuropsychological assessment test battery from December 2018 to May 2019. The authors defined patients with cognitive dysfunction as cognitive impairment shown on 3 or more neuropsychological tests. According to the presence of cerebral angiography, arterial stenosis, moyamoya vessels, and compensatory arteries were conducted. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify predictors for cognitive dysfunction before surgery. Subgroup analyses by onset type and Suzuki stage were carried out to identify specific predictors for preoperative cognitive dysfunction. RESULTS: In total, 29 of 92 (31.52%) patients had cognitive dysfunction. Multivariate analysis showed that moyamoya vessels generating from left hemisphere was recognized as independent predictor for cognitive dysfunction (P = 0.025, OR [95%CI], 0.085 [0.012-0.874]). For patients in left ICA-moyamoya subgroup, 19 of 45 (42.22%) cases with sparse moyamoya vessels had cognitive dysfunction (P = 0.031), while 22 (91.67%) of patients with dense moyamoya vessels had normal cognition (P = 0.004). Moyamoya vessels arising from ophthalmic artery had no significant association with cognitive dysfunction (P = 0.111). Multivariate analysis found that moyamoya vessels originating from left ICA was recognized as independent predictors for preoperative cognitive dysfunction (P = 0.048, OR [95%CI], 0.394 [0.132-0.926]). CONCLUSIONS: Moyamoya vessels arising from left hemisphere was a risk factor for the preoperative cognitive dysfunction in adult patients with MMD, with the denser moyamoya vessels, the less cognitive dysfunction. The current study offers a new perspective of moyamoya vessels and supporting data for choosing MMD candidates on cerebral revascularization.

RESUMO

Angiogenesis plays an important role in tissue development and repair, and how to regulate angiogenesis effectively is a widely studied problem in the biomedical field. In recent years, the role of autophagy in vascular endothelial cells has attracted extensive attention. Icariin (ICA) is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been proven to have outstanding protective effects on the vascular system and to regulate cellular autophagy effectively. However, at present, it has not been reported whether ICA can affect the angiogenic ability of endothelial cells by affecting autophagy. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether ICA affects the angiogenesis capacity of EA.hy926 human vascular endothelial cells through autophagy and explain the underlying potential mechanisms. First, we determined that ICA at appropriate concentrations has the ability to promote cell migration and angiogenesis using wound healing assays and tube formation assays. Then, at the molecular level, we observed the upregulation of VEGFA, VEGFR2, ANGI, ANGII, and Tie2 mRNA and detected the upregulation of TGFß1 protein by Western blotting. We also demonstrated that angiogenic concentrations of ICA can effectively activate autophagy. The autophagy inhibitor 3-MA significantly suppressed TGFß1 expression and tube formation in EA.hy926 cells. Overall, we hope that our studies might help to further understand the effect of ICA on vascular endothelial cells and provide a theoretical basis for future angiogenic applications of ICA.

RESUMO

Mycosis fungoides (MF), the most common form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, undergo large-cell transformation (LCT) in the late stage, manifesting aggressive behavior, resistance to treatments, and poor prognosis, but the mechanisms involved remain unclear. To identify the molecular driver of LCT, we collected tumor samples from 133 MF patients and performed whole-transcriptome sequencing on 49 advanced-stage MF patients, followed by integrated copy number inference and genomic hybridization. Tumors with LCT showed unique transcriptional programs and enriched expressions of genes at chr7q. Paternally expressed gene 10 (PEG10), an imprinted gene at 7q21.3, was ectopically expressed in malignant T cells from LCT, driven by 7q21.3 amplification. Mechanistically, aberrant PEG10 expression increased cell size, promoted cell proliferation, and conferred treatment resistance by a PEG10/KLF2/NF-κB axis in in vitro and in vivo models. Pharmacologically targeting PEG10 reversed the phenotypes of proliferation and treatment resistance in LCT. Our findings reveal new molecular mechanisms underlying LCT and suggest that PEG10 inhibition may serve as a promising therapeutic approach in late-stage aggressive T-cell lymphoma.

RESUMO

Cutaneous T cell lymphoma is a generally indolent disease derived from skin-homing mature T cells. However, in advanced stages, cutaneous T cell lymphoma may manifest aggressive clinical behaviour and lead to a poor prognosis. The mechanism of disease progression in cutaneous T cell lymphoma remains unknown. This study, based on a large clinical cohort, found that IKZF2, an essential transcription factor during T cell development and differentiation, showed stage- dependent overexpression in the malignant T cells in mycosis fungoides lesions. IKZF2 is specifically over- expressed in advanced-stage mycosis fungoides lesions, and correlates with poor prognosis. Mechanistically, overexpression of IKZF2 promotes cutaneous T cell lymphoma progression via inhibiting malignant cell apoptosis and may contribute to tumour immune escape by downregulating major histocompatibility complex II molecules and up-regulating the production of anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 by malignant T cells. These results demonstrate the important role of IKZF2 in high-risk cutaneous T cell lymphoma and pave the way for future targeted therapy.

RESUMO

Chiral transcription from the molecular level to the macroscopic level by self-organization has been a topic of considerable interest for mimicking biological systems. Homochiral coordination polymers (CPs) are intriguing systems that can be applied in the construction of artificial helical architectures, but they have scarcely been explored to date. Herein, we propose a new strategy for the generation of superhelices of 1D CPs by introducing flexible cyclohexyl groups on the side chains to simultaneously induce interchain van der Waals interactions and chain misalignment due to conformer interconversion. Superhelices of S- or R-Tb(cyampH)3·3H2O (S-1H, R-1H) [cyampH2 = S- or R-(1-cyclohexylethyl)aminomethylphosphonic acid] were obtained successfully, the formation of which was found to follow a new type of "chain-twist-growth" mechanism that had not been described previously. The design strategy used in this work may open a new and general route to the hierarchical assembly and synthesis of helical CP materials.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare life-threatening and incurable disease. Although symptoms of depression and anxiety have been widely reported, these traits and associated factors have not been systematically assessed in Northwest China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2020 and February 2021. 106 PAH patients in Northwest China were evaluated by Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and the Self Rating Depression Scale (SDS) questionnaire. RESULTS: Overall, the included patients had particularly high depressive symptoms (70.09%), while anxiety among them was 17.55%. Multivariate linear regression revealed that patients with lower age (p = 0.04), female (p < 0.01), smoking (p < 0.01), WHO functional class III/IV (p < 0.01), higher mean pulmonary hypertension (p < 0.01), lower left ventricular ejection fraction (p < 0.01), and lower 6-min walking distance (p < 0.01) had higher anxiety scores. Patients who lived in rural areas (p = 0.01), smoking (p < 0.01), WHO functional class III/IV (p < 0.01), higher mean pulmonary hypertension (p = 0.04), lower 6-min walking distance (p < 0.01), and college degree or above had higher depression scores (p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Mental health problems such as depression are common among patients with PAH in Northwest China. Patients' characteristics such as smoking status, WHO functional class, and 6-min walking distance were related to anxiety and depression scores. Thus, early detection of mental health problems such as depression and anxiety should be detected in PAH patients. Meanwhile, interventions against these problems should be used to improve such patients' mental status.
