RESUMO

In the years 1988-1990, 100 children aged from 2 to 18 years were examined, who were hospitalized for bronchial asthma of moderately severe and severe clinical course. In all children the examinations were performed twice at intervals of several weeks or several months during administration of the full set of drugs, including euphylline. The results were estimated according to the number and character of electric discharges. Out of the total number of 100 children in 52 cases abnormal EEG record was found. Generalized paroxysmal discharges were found in 16 children mainly with severe and moderately severe course of asthma. Generalized changes were recorded in 12 children mainly with moderately severe course of the disease. Milder focal changes were found in 23 children. Most evident changes occurred in children with over five years of disease duration and with history of unconsciousness episodes. The studies carried out indicate a relatively frequent, that is in half the cases, damage to the central nervous system following repeated episodes of hypoxia.

RESUMO

Fourty children were treated for brain abscess in the period 1983-1988 at the Neurosurgery Department, Children's Health Centre, Warsaw. Their age was from 4 weeks to 16 years. In 38 cases the treatment was surgical, followed by antibiotic therapy, in 2 cases only antibiotics were given. In 7 cases shunts were implanted for treatment of hydrocephalus developed in infants. Two patients died during the treatment. Problems encountered in various methods of brain abscess treatment are discussed.

RESUMO

The purpose of this work was to assess the diagnostic value of scintigraphy and EEG in posterior fossa tumours. The analysis covered 22 children aged from 10 months to 13 years treated surgically in the period from 1975 through 1978 for expanding intracranial lesions of this location. Before the operation in all cases positive ventriculography, brain scintigraphy and EEG were done. In 21 cases ventriculograms were abnormal and scintigrams demonstrated in all these cases presence of pathological foci in the posterior fossa. This method helped in accurate localization of 11 out of 12 tumours of cerebellar hemispheres and 9 of 10 posterior fossa tumours situated near the midline. EEG investigation demonstrated in 7 cases of cerebellar hemisphere tumours presence of asymmetric slow bioelectric activity in the posterior part of the brain on the side corresponding to the tumour. In EEG investigations in cases of midline posterior fossa tumours in most children symmetrical bursts of slow rhythms prevailed in posterior leads showing the characteristics of the so called á distance rhythms.
