Background: Rapid reduction of leukemic cells in the bone marrow during remission induction chemotherapy (RIC) can lead to significant complications such as tumor lysis syndrome (TLS). We investigated whether prephase steroid treatment before RIC could decrease TLS incidence and improve overall survival in pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Methods: Data were extracted from the Common Data Model databases in two tertiary-care hospitals in Seoul, South Korea. Patients were classified into the treated or untreated group if they had received RIC with prephase steroid treatment ≥7 days before RIC in 2012-2021 or not, respectively. Stabilized Inverse Probability of Treatment Weighting (sIPTW) was applied to ensure compatibility between the treated and untreated groups. The incidence of TLS within 14 days of starting RIC, overall survival (OS), and the incidence of adverse events of special interest were the primary endpoints. Multiple sensitivity analyses were performed. Results: Baseline characteristics were effectively balanced between the treated (n=308.4) and untreated (n=246.6) groups after sIPTW. Prephase steroid treatment was associated with a significant 88% reduction in the risk of TLS (OR 0.12, 95% CI: 0.03-0.41). OS was numerically greater in the treated group than in the untreated group although the difference was not statistically significant (HR 0.64, 95% CI 0.25-1.64). The treated group experienced significantly elevated risks for hyperbilirubinemia and hyperglycemia. The reduction in TLS risk by prephase steroid treatment was maintained in all of the sensitivity analyses. Conclusion: Prephase steroid treatment for ≥7 days before RIC in pediatric patients with ALL reduces the risk of TLS, while careful monitoring for toxicities is necessary. If adequately analyzed, real-world data can provide crucial effectiveness and safety information for proper management of pediatric patients with ALL, for whom prospective randomized studies may be difficult to perform for ethical and practical reasons.

Background and Objectives: Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement plays an important role in clinical practice. This study aimed to provide an equation for the proper estimation of catheter length in cases of PICC placement without imaging guidance in relation to patient height, weight, sex, and age. Materials and Methods: For 1137 PICC placement cases in both arm veins of 954 patients at a single center, the elbow crease to the cavoatrial junction length (ECL) was calculated as follows: ECL = (PICC length) + (distance from the elbow crease to the puncture site). We analyzed the relationship between ECL and patient characteristics and suggested a new equation for ECL based on height, weight, sex, and age. Results: The average ECL was 48.0 ± 2.4 cm in the right side and 51.0 ± 3.0 cm in the left side. ECL in the right arm was significantly correlated with patient height, sex, and age, whereas the ECL in the left arm was additionally significantly correlated with patient weight. The ECL (cm) prediction model was as follows: right ECL = 26.32 + 1.33 × (female = 1, male = 2) - 0.02 × age (years) + 0.13 × height (cm); left ECL = 22.09 + 1.28 × (female = 1, male = 2) + 0.02 × age (years) + 0.14 × height (cm) + 0.042 × weight (kg). Conclusions: The appropriate PICC length was predicted based on the patient's height, weight, sex, and age. The equations in our study can help predict the optimal catheter length and can be automatically calculated using computerized patient information for bedside procedures in PICC.

Hydrophobic surfaces have a wide range of applications, such as water harvesting, self-cleaning, and anti-biofouling. However, traditional methods of achieving hydrophobicity often involve the use of toxic materials such as fluoropolymers. This study aims to create controllable wettability surfaces with a three-dimensional geometry using a laser base powder bed fusion (PBF) process with commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) and silicone oil as non-toxic materials. The optimal PBF process parameters for fabricating micropillar structures, which are critical for obtaining the surface roughness necessary for achieving hydrophobic properties, were investigated experimentally. After fabricating the micropillar structures using PBF, their surface energy was reduced by treatment with silicone oil. Silicone oil provides a low-surface-energy coating that contributes to the water-repellent nature of hydrophobic surfaces. The wettability of the treated CP-Ti surfaces was evaluated based on the diameter of the pillars and the space between them. The structure with the optimal diameter and spacing of micropillars exhibited a high contact angle (156.15°). A pronounced petal effect (sliding angle of 25.9°) was achieved because of the morphology of the pillars, indicating the controllability of wetting. The micropillar diameter, spacing, and silicone oil played crucial roles in determining the water contact and sliding angle, which are key metrics for surface wettability.

A major challenge in longitudinal built-environment health studies is the accuracy of commercial business databases that are used to characterize dynamic food environments. Different databases often provide conflicting exposure measures on the same subject due to different source credibilities. As on-site verification is not feasible for historical data, we suggest combining multiple databases to correct the bias in health effect estimates due to measurement error in any 1 datasource. We propose a joint model for the time-varying health outcomes, observed count exposures, and latent true count exposures. Our model estimates the time-specific quality of sources and incorporates time dependence of true count exposure by Poisson integer-valued first-order autoregressive process. We take a Bayesian nonparametric approach to flexibly account for location-specific exposures. By resolving the discordance between different databases, our method reduces the bias in the longitudinal health effect of the true exposures. Our method is demonstrated with childhood obesity data in California public schools with respect to convenience store exposures in school neighborhoods from 2001 to 2008.

BACKGROUND: Time-domain parameters are less reliable in children due to increased arterial and chest wall compliance. We assessed the ability of indices derived from frequency analysis of photoplethysmography (PPG) and arterial blood pressure (ABP) waveforms to predict the hemodynamic state in children undergoing congenital heart surgery. METHODS: We analyzed waveforms after cardiopulmonary bypass period in 76 children who underwent total repair of congenital heart disease. Amplitude density of baseline and amplitude modulation in PPG and ABP by respiratory frequency were obtained using fast Fourier transform analysis and normalized by cardiac pulse height (representing respiratory modulations in venous blood [PPG-DC%] and in amplitude [PPG-AC%] at respiratory frequency). The ratio of amplitude density of PPG at the cardiac frequency (CF) to ABP-CF was used to assess vascular compliance. We assessed volume replacement (ml/kg) and vasoactive inotropic score (VIS). RESULTS: Children requiring volume replacement > 10 ml/kg (15.8%) showed higher PPG-DC% than those not requiring it (median: 52.4%, 95% CI [24.8, 295.1] vs. 36.7% [10.7, 125.7], P = 0.017). In addition, children with a VIS > 7 (22.4%) showed higher PPG-CF/ABP-CF (3.6 [0.91, 10.8] vs. 1.2 [0.27, 5.5], P = 0.008). On receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, PPG-DC% predicted a higher fluid requirement (area under the curve: 0.71, 95% CI [0.604, 0.816], P = 0.009), while PPG-CF/ABP-CF predicted a higher VIS (0.714, [0.599, 0.812], P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Frequency domain analysis of PPG and ABP may assess hemodynamic status requiring fluid or vasoactive inotropic therapy after congenital heart surgery.

Low skeletal muscle mass may develop in children with end-stage liver disease, affecting postoperative outcomes. We retrospectively investigated whether preoperative low muscle mass was associated with early postoperative outcomes in pediatric patients undergoing living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Electronic medical records of children (age below 12 y) who underwent LDLT between February 1, 2007, and January 31, 2018, were reviewed. The cross-sectional areas of psoas, quadratus lumborum, and erector spinae muscles at the level of fourth-fifth lumbar intervertebral disks were measured using abdominal CT images, divided by the square of the height and were added to obtain the total skeletal muscle index (TSMI). The patients were divided into two groups according to the median TSMI in the second quintile (1859.1 mm 2 /m 2 ). Complications in the early postoperative period (within 30 d after surgery) classified as Clavien-Dindo grade 3 or higher were considered major complications. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the association between preoperative low muscle mass and early postoperative outcomes. In the study population of 123 patients (median age, 14 mo; range, 8-38 mo) who underwent LDLT, 29% and 71% were classified in the low (mean TSMI, 1642.5 ± 187.0 mm 2 /m 2 ) and high (mean TSMI 2188.1 ± 273.5 mm 2 /m 2 ) muscle mass groups, respectively. The rates of major complications, mechanical ventilation >96 hours, intensive care unit stay >14 days, hospital stay >30 days, and in-hospital mortality were not significantly different between the 2 groups. Additionally, adverse outcomes according to pediatric end-stage liver disease scores and sex were not significantly different between the 2 groups. In conclusion, preoperative low muscle mass defined by TSMI was not associated with early postoperative outcomes in pediatric patients undergoing LDLT.

BACKGROUND: Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is a life-threatening disease that requires urgent liver transplantation (LT). Accurate identification of high-risk patients is essential for predicting post-LT survival. The chronic liver failure consortium ACLF score is a widely accepted risk-stratification score that includes total white blood cell (WBC) counts as a component. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of total and differential WBC counts for short-term mortality following LT in patients with ACLF. METHODS: A total of 685 patients with ACLF who underwent LT between January 2008 and February 2019 were analyzed. Total and differential WBC counts were examined as a function of the model for end-stage liver disease for sodium (MELD-Na) score. The association between total and differential WBC counts and 90-day post-LT mortality was assessed using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. RESULTS: The total WBC counts and neutrophil ratio were higher in patients with ACLF than in those without ACLF. The neutrophil ratio was significantly associated with 90-day post-LT mortality after adjustment (hazard ratio [HR], 1.04; P = 0.001), whereas total WBC counts were not significantly associated with 90-day post-LT mortality in either univariate or multivariate Cox analyses. The neutrophil ratio demonstrated a relatively linear trend with an increasing MELD-Na score and HR for 90-day post-LT mortality, whereas the total WBC counts exhibited a plateaued pattern. CONCLUSIONS: Neutrophilia, rather than total WBC counts, is a better prognostic indicator for short-term post-LT mortality in patients with ACLF.

Background: Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a life-threatening condition, and in 50% of patients, AMI is caused by acute superior mesenteric artery (SMA) embolism. Endovascular treatment is increasingly being considered the primary modality in selected cases. Many studies have reported that percutaneous aspiration embolectomy using a guiding catheter and thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) are effective in treating SMA embolism. However, no reports on treating SMA embolism using rtPA administered via a microcatheter exist. Case presentation: A 64-year-old man with underlying atrial fibrillation presented with acute SMA embolism revealed using computed tomography (CT). rtPA (total 3 mg) was carefully administered into the occluded SMA through a microcatheter. No complications occurred, and complete revascularization of the SMA was revealed on follow-up CT. Conclusions: Compared with previous reports, this case report reveals that successful revascularization can be achieved using rtPA administered via a microcatheter, with a low dose of rtPA and a short duration of thrombolysis.

BACKGROUND: Rising costs of cancer treatments challenge even areas with universal health coverage. There's a need to assess current medical care utilization trends among patients with cancer to guide public health policy, resource allocation, and set informed healthcare goals. METHODS: We analyzed the latest trends in medical care utilization by cancer patients in four areas-drugs, radiation therapy (RT), surgery, and diagnostic procedures-using clinical databases extracted from electronic medical records of a tertiary hospital in Korea between 2014 and 2019. Compound adjusted growth rates (CAGR) were computed to capture the annual growth over the study period. RESULTS: A total of 74,285 cancer patients were identified, with 40.3% (29,962), 14.2% (10,577), 31.1% (23,066), and 92.6% (68,849) of patients having received at least one anticancer agent, RT, surgery, and diagnostic procedure, respectively, over the period. We observed a 1.7-fold increase in the use of targeted · immune-oncology agents (from 6.8% to 11.6%) and a 21-fold increase (from 3.0% in 2014 to 65.7%) in intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) use over the period. In contrast, we observed a continuous decrease in the proportion of patients who underwent surgical treatment from 12.2% in 2014 to 10.9% in 2019. This decrease was particularly noticeable in patients with colon cancer (from 28.5% to 24.2%) and liver cancer (from 4.1% to 2.9%). CONCLUSION: From 2014 to 2019, there was a significant rise in the use of targeted · immune-oncology agents and IMRT, alongside a decline in surgeries. While targeted · immune-oncology agents and IMRT may offer promising outcomes, their financial impact and potential for overuse necessitate careful oversight and long-term cost-effectiveness studies.

We report an unusual case of highly suspected malignant hyperthermia after inducing anesthesia in a brain-dead 18-year-old male patient undergoing organ procurement surgery. The patient was administered desflurane (3 vol%) and rocuronium bromide (50 mg) to induce and maintain general anesthesia. He experienced hypercapnia and tachycardia within 5 minutes of anesthesia induction; however, his body temperature rapidly rose only after 15 minutes. The volatile anesthetic was discontinued, and dantrolene was administered at a low dose (1 mg/kg) to avert possible hepatotoxic effects on the donor liver. Fortunately, the clinical course of the brain-dead donor until the organs were harvested and the liver transplantation outcome of the recipient was favorable. A comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of brain death, organ transplantation, and malignant hyperthermia is essential to respond promptly and appropriately. Based on our experience, low-dose dantrolene may be clinically used in brain-dead donors while accounting for its potential hepatotoxic effects.

Background: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and its risk factors are increasingly recognized in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD). Objectives: The aim of this study was to characterize HFpEF and identify relevant risk factors in patients with ESLD. Additionally, the prognostic impact of high-probability HFpEF on post-liver transplantation (LT) mortality was investigated. Methods: Patients with ESLD prospectively enrolled from the Asan LT Registry between 2008 and 2019 were divided into groups with low (scores of 0 and 1), intermediate (scores of 2-4), and high (scores of 5 and 6) probability using the Heart Failure Association-PEFF diagnostic score for HFpEF. Gradient-boosted modeling in machine learning was further used to appraise the apparent importance of risk factors. Finally, post-LT all-cause mortality was followed for 12.8 years (median 5.3 years); there were 498 deaths after LT. Results: Among the 3,244 patients, 215 belonged to the high-probability group, commonly those with advanced age, female sex, anemia, dyslipidemia, renal dysfunction, and hypertension. The highest risk factors for the high-probability group, according to gradient-boosted modeling, were female sex, anemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and age >65 years. Among patients with Model for End-Stage Liver Disease scores of >30, those with high, intermediate, and low probability had cumulative overall survival rates of 71.6%, 82.2%, and 88.9% at 1 year and 54.8%, 72.1%, and 88.9% at 12 years after LT (log-rank P = 0.026), respectively. Conclusions: High-probability HFpEF was found in 6.6% of patients with ESLD with poorer long-term post-LT survival, especially those with advanced stages of liver disease. Therefore, identifying HFpEF using the Heart Failure Association-PEFF score and addressing modifiable risk factors can improve post-LT survival.

The spread of infectious diseases has accelerated the transition from face-to-face (F2F) to non-F2F (NF2F) education. To maintain the effect of successful NF2F education in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, reorganizing the curriculum to suit the NF2F educational environment is necessary. We propose an appropriate learning curriculum for NF2F basic life support (BLS) training for laypersons based on expert surveys and learners' performance outcomes. This study included three stages and used multiple methods. A draft curriculum was created through a literature review and three-round Delphi approach, and then applied as a test for actual education. After the training, the final curriculum of the NF2F BLS training for laypersons was proposed by reflecting on the performance outcomes of learners and expert opinions. NF2F theoretical education was simplified into five content items: concept of chain of survival, legal protection for first aiders, importance of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to recognize a patient in cardiac arrest and activate the emergency medical services system, and reduced training time. In the hands-on skills session, it was recommended to practice chest compressions using a simple intuitive feedback device and to use automated external defibrillators step-by-step more than in F2F training. In conclusion, NF2F training is a suitable option for BLS training methods in situations where F2F training is difficult.

Background and Objectives: Biliary cast syndrome, which was first reported in 1975, is a rare disease that occurs after liver transplantation. The incidence is even lower in patients who have not undergone liver transplantation. This study reports a rare case of biliary cast syndrome with cholangiocarcinoma-like lesions in a patient who did not undergo liver transplantation. Case Report: Herein, we report a case of a 69-year-old man with right upper quadrant pain and elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transferase, who had a history of total gastrectomy for gastric cancer and laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis. Computed tomography (CT) revealed longitudinal bile stones in the extrahepatic and intrahepatic bile ducts and abrupt narrowing of the left main bile duct accompanied by a narrowing of the upstream bile duct in the left lobe of the liver. Based on the CT findings, the removal of the bile stones in the bile duct and additional examinations of the suspected cholangiocarcinoma were performed. The patient's symptoms improved, and examinations for suspected cholangiocarcinoma showed no abnormal findings, and he was discharged one month later. Conclusions: The purpose of this case report is to share a rare case of Biliary Cast Syndrome (BCS) occurring without liver transplantation. Additionally, the report aims to share image findings that mimic cancer in BCS, with the goal of reducing unnecessary repetitive biopsies, minimizing patient discomfort, and decreasing unnecessary costs by aiding in the diagnosis of BCS.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the association between preoperative low muscle mass and early postoperative outcomes in pediatric patients undergoing total correction of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. SETTING: A single university hospital in Seoul, South Korea. PARTICIPANTS: Pediatric patients (≤3 years) who underwent total correction of TOF between May 2008 and February 2018. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Cross-sectional areas of the pectoralis and erector spinae muscles were measured using preoperative chest computed tomography (CT) scans, and adjusted to body surface area to define muscle mass index. The patients were divided into sarcopenia, presarcopenia, and no sarcopenia groups based on cutoff values determined using the mean and SD of the muscle mass index in the third z-weight quintile. Of a total of 330 patients included in the final analysis, 13 were associated with the sarcopenia group, 57 in the presarcopenia group, and 260 in the no sarcopenia group. The sarcopenia group exhibited a higher incidence of major adverse events than the presarcopenia and no sarcopenia groups, respectively (38% v 25% v 18%; p = 0.033). Logistic regression analyses revealed that only younger age at the time of surgery was significantly associated with major adverse events (odds ratio 0.82; 95% CI 0.72-0.94, p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of sarcopenia, as assessed by preoperative chest CT, was low in pediatric patients undergoing total correction of TOF, and preoperative sarcopenia did not predict early postoperative major adverse events.

Statin therapy is essential for secondary prevention in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, the effects of statin therapy in patients receiving chronic dialysis remain uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the effect of statin therapy on long-term mortality in patients on dialysis after a first-time ASCVD. Patients receiving maintenance dialysis aged ≥ 18 years with a first-time ASCVD event between 2013 and 2018 were included in the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Associations of statin use with long-term mortality were examined using Cox proportional hazards regression models adjusted for demographics and comorbidities. Among 17,242 patients on dialysis, 9611 (55.7%) were prescribed statins after a first-time ASCVD event. Among statin users, 7376 (76.7%) used moderate-intensity statins. During a mean follow-up of 32.6 ± 20.9 months, statin use was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality than statin nonuse after adjusting for confounding factors (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.92; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.88-0.97; p = 0.0009). Despite a lack of evidence, more than half of patients on dialysis were prescribed statins after an ASCVD event. In patients on dialysis after ASCVD, statin therapy significantly reduced the risk of long-term all-cause mortality.

BACKGROUND: The identification of gene-phenotype relationships is important in medical genetics as it serves as a basis for precision medicine. However, most of the gene-phenotype relationship data are buried in the biomedical literature in textual form. OBJECTIVE: We propose RelCurator, a curation system that extracts sentences including both gene and phenotype entities related to specific disease categories from PubMed articles, provides rich additional information such as entity taggings, and predictions of gene-phenotype relationships. METHODS: We targeted neurodegenerative disorders and developed a deep learning model using Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (BiGRU) networks and BioWordVec word embeddings for predicting gene-phenotype relationships from biomedical texts. The prediction model is trained with more than 130,000 labeled PubMed sentences including gene and phenotype entities, which are related to or unrelated to neurodegenerative disorders. RESULTS: We compared the performance of our deep learning model with those of Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and simple Recurrent Neural Network (simple RNN) models. Our model performed better with an F1-score of 0.96. Furthermore, the evaluation done using a few curation cases in the real scenario showed the effectiveness of our work. Therefore, we conclude that RelCurator can identify not only new causative genes, but also new genes associated with neurodegenerative disorders' phenotype. CONCLUSION: RelCurator is a user-friendly method for accessing deep learning-based supporting information and a concise web interface to assist curators while browsing the PubMed articles. Our curation process represents an important and broadly applicable improvement to the state of the art for the curation of gene-phenotype relationships.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the added value of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for detecting hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) and feeding arteries during transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE). Material and methods: Seventy-six patients underwent TACE and CBCT. We subcategorized patients into groups I (61 patients: possible superselection of tumor/feeding arteries) and II (15 patients: limited superselection of tumor/feeding arteries). We evaluated fluoroscopy time and radiation dose during TACE. Two blinded radiologists independently performed an interval reading based on digital subtraction angiography (DSA) imaging only and DSA combined with CBCT in group I. Result: The mean total fluoroscopy time was 1456.3 ± 605.6 s. The mean dose-area product (DAP), mean DAP of CBCT, and mean ratio of DAP of CBCT to total DAP was 137.1 ± 69.2 Gy cm2, 18.3 ± 7.1 Gy cm2, and 13.3%, respectively. The sensitivity for detecting HCC increased after the additional CBCT reading, from 69.6% to 97.3% and 69.6% to 96.4% for readers 1 and 2, respectively. The sensitivity for detecting feeding arteries increased from 60.3% to 96.6% and 63.8% to 97.4% for readers 1 and 2, respectively. Conclusions: CBCT can increase sensitivity for detecting HCCs and feeding arteries without significantly increasing the radiation exposure.

BACKGROUND: Diastolic dysfunction is regarded as an important predictor of outcome after liver transplantation (LT). We investigated the influence of liver disease severity on left ventricular diastolic properties using end-diastolic pressure-volume relationship (EDPVR) analysis in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD). Association between alterations of the EDPVR and mortality after LT was evaluated. METHODS: In this observational retrospective cohort study, 3,211 patients who underwent LT for ESLD were included in analysis. Variables derived from single-beat EDPVR (diastolic stiffness-coefficient [ß] and end-diastolic volume at an end-diastolic pressure of 20 mmHg [EDVI20] indicating ventricular capacitance) were estimated using preoperative echocardiographic data. Alterations in EDPVR with increased stiffness (ß > 6.16) were categorized into 3 groups; leftward-shifted (EDVI20 <51 mL/m2), rightward-shifted (EDVI20 > 69.7 mL/m2), and intermediate (EDVI20 51-69.7 mL/m2). RESULTS: As the model for ESLD score increases, both EDVI20 and ß gradually increased, which indicated ventricular remodeling with larger capacitance and higher diastolic stiffness. Among patients with increased stiffness (ß > 6.16, n = 1,090), survival rates after LT were lower in leftward-shifted EDPVR than in rightward-shifted EDPVR (73.7% vs 82.9%; log-rank P = 0.002). In the adjusted Cox proportional hazard model, risk of cumulative all-cause mortality at 11 years was the highest in leftward-shifted EDPVR (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.93; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.27-2.92), followed by intermediate EDPVR (HR: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.12-2.26), compared with rightward-shifted EDPVR. The SHapley Additive exPlanation model revealed that the variables associated with leftward-shifted EDPVR were diabetes, female sex, old age, and hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: As ESLD advances, diastolic ventricular properties are characterized by increased EDVI20 and ß on rightward-shifted EDPVR, indicating larger capacitance and higher stiffness. However, leftward-shifted EDPVR with left ventricle remodeling failure is associated with poor post-LT survival.

RESUMO

An environmentally friendly oxidation system has proposed for the practical and scalable production of value-added 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid from 1 kg of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The system is composed of a simple base, oxygen, and a green solvent, thereby providing a sustainable and economical approach to organic synthesis. To gain insight into the mechanism of this oxidation process, NMR spectroscopic analysis and kinetic study are used for the mechanistic investigation of this environmentally friendly oxidation process.

A novel actinobacterial strain, designated AGMB00827T, was isolated from swine faeces. Strain AGMB00827T was obligately anaerobic, Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped bacterium. Comparative analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene and whole genome sequence revealed that strain AGMB00827T was affiliated to the genus Collinsella, and was most closely related to Collinsella vaginalis Marseille-P2666T (= KCTC 25056T). Biochemical analysis showed strain AGMB00827T was negative for catalase and oxidase. Interestingly, strain AGMB00827T possessed urease activity, which was determined by traditional methods (API test and Christensen's urea medium), unlike related strains. Furthermore, the major cellular fatty acids (> 10%) of the isolate were C18:1 ω9c, C16:0, C16:0 DMA and C18:2 ω9,12c DMA. Based on the whole genome sequence analysis, the DNA G + C content of strain AGMB00827T was 52.3%, and the genome size and numbers of rRNA and tRNA genes were 1,945,251 bp, 3 and 46, respectively. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain AGMB00827T and C. vaginalis KCTC 25056 T were 71.0 and 23.2%, respectively. Additionally, the genome analysis revealed that strain AGMB00827T possesses urease gene cluster including ureABC and ureDEFG while the related strains do not have those genes, which is consistent with the urease activity. On the basis of polyphasic taxonomic approach, strain AGMB00827T represents a novel species within the genus Collinsella, for which the name Collinsella urealyticum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AGMB00827T (= KCTC 25287T = GDMCC 1.2724T).
