RESUMO

Background: Because nursing students are important human resources for future public health, their participatory behaviours related to preventive health during a pandemic were explored. Aim: This study examines the impact of nursing students' risk communication, anxiety, and their perception of risk on their participatory behaviour during COVID-19. Methods: Data were collected from 180 South Korean nursing students in six provinces via an online survey and were analysed using independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. The SPSS WIN 25.0 program was employed. Findings: Perceiving information to influence oneself was a significant predictor of each participatory behaviour. Risk communication was not identified as a factor influencing health-related participatory behaviour. However, the influence of information is a concept derived from risk communication. Discussion: Risk communication for behaviour change needs to be designed so that communication targets recognise the impact of risk. Promoting pro-social behaviour in the nursing curriculum is important because it will make the students more sensitive to information that can have a dangerous impact on others. Conclusion: It is important to create health-related risk communications by considering the perspective of perception of influence.

RESUMO

Infringement of personal medical information can lead to psychological, social, and economic damages; legal repercussions; information abuse; and invasion of patients' privacy. This study identified the effects of nursing students' ethical inclination, knowledge, and perception on their medical information protection practice. Participants were third- and fourth-year students of one nursing college in a city in South Korea. Participants' perception of the importance of medical information protection was correlated with their practice of medical information protection (r = 0.62, P < .001), and their ethical inclination toward idealism was correlated with perceived need to protect medical information (r = 0.18, P = .049). The perception of the need for medical information protection was a significant predictor of the practice of medical information protection (R2 = 0.39, P < .001). Findings suggested that nursing students' perception of medical information protection affected their practice of information protection. Therefore, measures to improve nursing students' perception of the importance of medical information protection might be useful to improve their practice of information protection in clinical settings. There is an urgent need to identify the barriers to the practice of medical information protection, and ongoing training on medical information protection should be included in nursing courses.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to examine the association between workplace incivility and compassion competence of Korean nurses, as well as the moderating effect of psychological capital. BACKGROUND: Workplace incivility affects the quality of patient care and as such is worthy of critical examination regarding its impact on the compassion competence of nurses. METHODS: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, data for 192 Korean hospital nurses were used to analyse the relationship between workplace incivility and compassion competence and the moderating effect of psychological capital. RESULTS: Workplace incivility was negatively associated with compassion competence of nurses. Furthermore, psychological capital had a conditional moderating effect on the relationship between workplace incivility and nurses' compassion competence. The negative associations of workplace incivility with compassion competence were significant at low and medium levels of psychological capital but not at high psychological capital. Moreover, the association was stronger for those with low psychological capital. CONCLUSION: Workplace incivility is negatively associated with compassion competence among nurses, and psychological capital has conditional moderating effects in its relationship. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Management efforts to reduce workplace incivility and to improve nurses' psychological capital are needed to improve patient care quality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ideally, college majors should be chosen to achieve self-realization and correspond to self-concept. However, some students select a major based on extrinsic factors, rather than aptitude or interests, because of a lack of employment opportunities. If they have negative college experiences with an unsatisfactory major, they might not engage fully in their occupation following graduation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify factors affecting specialty satisfaction in preclinical practice nursing-college students. DESIGN: A cross-sectional descriptive survey. SETTING: A nonprobability convenience sample of 312 nursing-college students at colleges in Deajeon City, South Korea. The survey questionnaire was distributed to those who agreed to participate. PARTICIPANTS: Freshmen and sophomore nursing students (n=312). METHODS: Participants were 312 students at colleges in Deajeon City. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data, which were analyzed using SPSS/WIN. RESULTS: Positive psychological capital and nursing professional values were positively correlated with specialty satisfaction. Significant predictors for specialty satisfaction included hope and optimism (as components of positive psychological capital), the roles of nursing service and originality of nursing (as nursing professional values), and aptitude/interests and job value (as motives for selecting a major). CONCLUSION: The findings suggested that nursing students' specialty satisfaction was partially linked to positive psychological capital and professional values. Therefore, the promotion of positive factors should be useful in enhancing specialty satisfaction in preclinical-practice nursing-college students.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to identify the educational effects of a blended e-learning program for graduating nursing students on self-efficacy, problem solving, and psychomotor skills for core basic nursing skills. A one-group pretest/posttest quasi-experimental design was used with 79 nursing students in Korea. The subjects took a conventional 2-week lecture-based practical course, together with spending an average of 60 minutes at least twice a week during 2 weeks on the self-guided e-learning content for basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation using Mosby's Nursing Skills database. Self- and examiner-reported data were collected between September and November 2014 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t test, and Pearson correlation. The results showed that subjects who received blended e-learning education had improved problem-solving abilities (t = 2.654) and self-efficacy for nursing practice related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation (t = 3.426). There was also an 80% to 90% rate of excellent postintervention performance for the majority of psychomotor skills, but the location of chest compressions, compression rate per minute, artificial respiration, and verification of patient outcome still showed low levels of performance. In conclusion, blended E-learning, which allows self-directed repetitive learning, may be more effective in enhancing nursing competencies than conventional practice education.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was done to evaluate the Military Mental Health Promotion Program. The program was an email based cognitive behavioral intervention. METHODS: The research design was a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Participants were 32 soldiers who agreed to participate in the program. Data were collected at three different times from January 2012 to March 2012; pre-test, post-test, and a one-month follow-up test. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 18.0. The effectiveness of the program was tested by repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: The first hypothesis that the level of depression in the experimental group who participated in the program would decrease compared to the control group was not supported in that the difference in group-time interaction was not statistically significant (F=2.19, p=.121). The second and third hypothesis related to anxiety and self-esteem were supported in group-time interaction, respectively (F=7.41, p=.001, F=11.67, p<.001). CONCLUSION: Results indicate that the program is effective in improving soldiers' mental health status in areas of anxiety and self-esteem.
