RESUMO

Data on blood parameters were obtained from 56 (32 female, 24 male) clinically healthy, captive bobcats (Felis rufus). The animals were housed under ambient conditions at the Mississippi State University Captive Bobcat Facility. Samples were collected opportunistically between 1982 and 1995. Differences (P < or = 0.05) in blood parameters existed between sexes, among age classes (kitten, subadult, adult, and geriatric), and among stages in the reproductive cycle (breeding, parturition, recycling, and anestrus). Blood parameters for bobcats were similar to reported values for domestic cats (Felis catus). These results can be used as as reference to indicate when blood parameter aberrations exist in bobcats.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate analgesic and sedative effects of medetomidine hydrochloride in dogs and to compare effects with those of xylazine hydrochloride. DESIGN: Randomized, controlled trial. ANIMALS: 184 dogs that required sedation or analgesia for completion of minor diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. PROCEDURE: Dogs were sedated with medetomidine, i.v. (750 micrograms/m2 of body surface area) or i.m. (1,000 micrograms/m2) or with xylazine, i.v. (1.1 mg/kg 10.5 mg/lb] of body weight) or i.m. (2.2 mg/kg [1 mg/lb]). Sedative effects were measured by scoring posture and response to noise. Durations of effects were determined by measuring time intervals between drug administration and changes in posture. Analgesic effects were measured by determining toe-pinch pressure needed to elicit a withdrawal response. Clinicians rated sedative and analgesic effects and ease with which diagnostic or therapeutic procedures could be performed. RESULTS: Posture and response to noise scores were significantly higher for dogs given medetomidine, i.m., than for dogs given xylazine, i.m., and for dogs given medetomidine, i.v., than for dogs given xylazine, i.v. Time to regaining sternal recumbency and time to regaining ability to stand were longest after i.m. administration of medetomidine. Toe-pinch pressures were not significantly different among groups. Clinicians rated overall analgesic and sedative effects as excellent significantly more often after administration of medetomidine than after administration of xylazine. Prevalence of adverse effects did not differ among groups. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Medetomidine and xylazine, at doses tested, were effective and safe, but results of subjective measurements indicated that medetomidine provided better sedation and analgesia than did xylazine. Specific alpha 2-adrenergic antagonists (atipamezole, yohimbine) are available for control of adverse cardiovascular effects.

RESUMO

The clinical signs and laboratory changes of brodifacoum (BDF) intoxicated dogs and their response to vitamin K1 treatment were examined. Brodifacoum, a second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide, was fed to four dogs for 3 consecutive days producing a cumulative dose of 1.1 mg BDF/kg body weight. Clinical observations of the animals were made daily throughout the study. Monitored laboratory parameters included: one-stage prothrombin time (OSPT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), activated coagulation time (ACT), complete blood counts, thrombocyte counts, and serum chemistry values. Response to vitamin K1 therapy was evaluated clinically and by laboratory tests. Serum BDF concentrations were monitored. Inappetence and hemorrhagic tendencies were exhibited by day 5 postrodenticide exposure. One-stage prothrombin time, APTT, and ACT were 25% greater than time zero values at 24, 24, and 72 hours postdosing, respectively. All laboratory parameters returned to normal within 48 hours of initiating vitamin K1 therapy (0.83 mg/kg orally, TID for 5 days). Serum brodifacoum concentrations were highest (1065-1215 ng/mL) during the 3 days after BDF dosing and were detectable (3.0-7.5 ng/mL) until day 24 postexposure. A mean BDF elimination half-life of 6 +/- 4 days was observed.

RESUMO

Ehrlichial diseases of dogs currently are recognized to be caused by Ehrlichia canis, Ehrlichia platys, Ehrlichia equi, and Ehrlichia risticii. Information on each disease's history, transmission, pathogenesis, clinicopathologic findings, diagnosis, therapy, and prevention is presented in this article. Ehrlichia canis is the most common cause of clinical illness. Case reports are included to illustrate common presentations of Ehrlichia canis infections.

RESUMO

Pythium insidiosum was isolated from the subcutaneous tissue of a 1-year-old tan crossbreed dog and from the intestinal tract of an 18-month-old Samoyed male. Gomori's methenamine silver stain was superior to hematoxylin and eosin in demonstrating the organism in tissue sections. The agent was identified as P. insidiosum by zoospore formation in an aqueous yeast extract solution containing grass blades. Exoantigens produced in culture were shown to be identical to known P. insidiosum antigens by microimmunodiffusion.

RESUMO

Sarcoptes scabiei infestation was diagnosed in a cat. Clinical signs included thick, crusty, exudative dermatitis on the feet, caudal aspect of the thighs, and tail. Paronychia and dystrophic nails also were observed. The course of the disease was chronic. Concomitant and potentially predisposing additional health problems were suspected, but were not confirmed.

RESUMO

Clinical, hematologic, and immunologic findings for 14 dogs with Ehrlichia canis monoclonal gammopathy were studied retrospectively. Epistaxis, anemia, thrombocytopenia, hypoalbuminemia, hypergammaglobulinemia, and proteinuria were documented in the majority of these dogs. The serum protein electrophoresis pattern was characterized by a distinct narrow-base monoclonal spike, by a broad-base monoclonal spike, or by a monoclonal spike superimposed on a polyclonal gammopathy. The monoclonal spike disappeared following tetracycline treatment for ehrlichiosis. The long-term prognosis following treatment was generally good. The diagnostic features of monoclonal gammopathy due to myeloma were compared with those of E. canis monoclonal gammopathy. Owing to numerous similarities in clinical, hematologic, and immunologic findings, we conclude that an E. canis antibody titer should be determined in all dogs in which a diagnosis of benign monoclonal gammopathy is contemplated or definitive evidence of myeloma, leukemia, or macroglobulinemia is lacking.
