RESUMO

In this study, a method is devised that allows the intentions of autonomous vehicles to be effectively communicated to pedestrians and passengers via an efficient interactive interface. Visual and auditory factors are used as variables to investigate the effects of different autonomous vehicle signal factors on the judgment of pedestrians and to determine the main factors such that the best combination can be proposed. Two visual dimensions (i.e., color and flashing) and three auditory dimensions (i.e., rhythm, frequency, and melody) are used as the experimental signal variables. In addition, deceleration and waiting-to-restart scenarios are investigated. Multiple-choice questions and a subjective cognition scale are used for evaluation. The results show that the combination of green and slow rhythm can be used for the road-user-first case, whereas the combination of red and fast rhythm can be used for the vehicle-first case. Under the same intention, factors of color, flashing, rhythm, and melody are highly similar in terms of the combination mode, except for the frequency. In the deceleration and waiting-to-restart scenarios, the frequencies of the best signal are high and low frequencies, respectively. The results of this study can be used as a reference for the signal design of autonomous vehicles in the future and provide ideas for the interactions between autonomous vehicles and pedestrians.

RESUMO

In order to meet industrial demands, some colleges and universities have offered interdisciplinary programs that integrate design, engineering, and business. However, how many changes these programs have brought to students, and whether students participating in these programs have had better interdisciplinary ability than students involved in a single discipline study have always been questions that many researchers want to explore. In a university that offers an interdisciplinary program, we found that there is no significant difference in interdisciplinary integration ability between the students participating in the interdisciplinary program and the students involved in a single discipline study through quantitative comparisons of 91 student questionnaires and analyses of interviews with nine teachers of interdisciplinary courses and other related staff members. This may result from the students' lack of motivation, lack of prior experience, the influence of individual traits, the increase of learning pressure and academic burden, and the interference of disciplinary factors during interdisciplinary learning. The research finding is intended to improve student interdisciplinary learning effectiveness by facilitating interdisciplinary teachers' understanding of the influencing factors of student interdisciplinary learning, and by providing a reference for interdisciplinary teaching design.

RESUMO

Since their development, social robots have been a popular topic of research, with numerous studies evaluating their functionality or task performance. In recent years, social robots have begun to be regarded as social actors at work, and their social attributes have been explored. Therefore, this study focused on four occupational fields (shopping reception, home companion, education, and security) where robots are widely used, exploring the influence of robot gestures on their perceived personality traits and comparing the gesture design guidelines required in specific occupational fields. The study was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, an interactive script was developed; moreover, observation was employed to derive gestures related to the discourse on the fields of interest. The second stage involved robot experimentation based on human-robot interaction through video. Results show that metaphoric gestures appeared less frequently than did deictic, iconic, or beat gestures. Robots' perceived personality traits were categorized into sociality, competence, and status. Introducing all types of gestures helped enhance perceived sociality. The addition of deictic, and iconic gestures significantly improved perceived competence and perceived status. Regarding the shopping reception robot, after the inclusion of basic deictic and iconic gestures, sufficient beats gestures should be implemented to create a friendly and outgoing demeanor, thereby promoting user acceptance. In the home companion, education, and security contexts, the addition of beat gestures did not affect the overall acceptance level; the designs should instead be focused on the integration of the other gesture types.

RESUMO

Existing electronic devices will quickly become e-waste when encountering technological iterations, which results in serious environmental and public health problems. Previous circular economy research has mainly focused on the development of new products with long life or recycling discarded products. This study firstly proposes the Green-Extension Design (GED) strategy for developing adaptable accessories that provide existing products with the ability to continue to work in a different context. Competitiveness was selected to evaluate the performance of GED, and three competitiveness components were derived through principal component analysis (PCA). Moreover, AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) was applied to define the weights of the three competitiveness components, and a GED model was established on the basis of production function. Furthermore, the calculation method for each competitiveness component was defined. The GED strategy is aimed at extending the life of existing products, as well as reducing resource waste and environmental pollution. The GED model based on competitiveness components can enable enterprises to design products of high competitiveness and obtain market share as a result.

RESUMO

In this study, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and polytetramethylene glycol were used to prepare a prepolymer; N,N'-bis(4-hydroxybenzylidene)-2,6-diaminopyridine (BHBP) was used as a chain extender; and these elements were combined to prepare a novel polyurethane, BHBP/PU. Gel permeation chromatography revealed that the molecular weight of the BHBP/PU samples increased as the BHBP content was increased. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that high BHBP content facilitated strong hydrogen bonding in the samples. Differential thermogravimetry indicated that the initial decomposition temperature of BHBP/PU-3 was approximately 10 °C higher than that of BHBP/PU-1. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that increasing the BHBP content substantially increased both the glass transition and dynamic glass transition temperatures of the BHBP/PU samples. The tensile strengths of BHBP/PU-1, BHBP/PU-2, and BHBP/PU-3 were 7.7, 10.9, and 21.6 MPa, respectively, with corresponding Young's moduli of 0.7, 1.9, and 3.3 MPa. These results demonstrated that both the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the BHBP/PU samples increased as the BHBP content was increased. Moreover, the BHBP/PU samples exhibited excellent shape recovery of >90%.

RESUMO

UD evaluation principles are difficult to implement in product design. This study proposes a methodology for implementing UD in the design process through user participation. The original UD principles and user experience are used to develop the evaluation items. Difference of product types was considered. Factor analysis and Quantification theory type I were used to eliminate considered inappropriate evaluation items and to examine the relationship between evaluation items and product design factors. Product design specifications were established for verification. The results showed that converting user evaluation into crucial design verification factors by the generalized evaluation scale based on product attributes as well as the design factors applications in product design can improve users' UD evaluation. The design process of this study is expected to contribute to user-centered UD application.

RESUMO

A balance between portability and usability made the 10.1″ diagonal screens popular in the Mobile PC market (e.g., 10.1″ mini-notebooks/netbooks, convertible/hybrid ultraportables); yet no academic research rationalizes this phenomenon. This study investigated the size effects of display and input devices of 4 mini-notebooks (netbooks) ranged in size on their performances in 2 simple and 3 complex applied tasks. It seemed that the closer the display and/or input devices (touchpad/touchscreen/keyboard) sizes to those sizes of a generic notebook, the shorter the operation times (there was no certain phenomenon for the error rates). With non-significant differences, the 10.1″ and 8.9″ mini-notebooks (netbooks) were as fast as the 11.6″ one in almost all the tasks, except for the 8.9″ one in the typing tasks. The 11.6″ mini-notebook (netbook) was most preferred; while the difference in the satisfactions was not significant between the 10.1″ and 11.6″ ones but between the 7″ and 11.6″ ones.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effects of light type (spot, directional, and point), forward-rotated stimulus angle (20 degrees, 45 degrees, and 70 degrees), and surface texture (wood, metal, transparent glass, dark brown leather, and translucent plastic) on errors in the estimated vertical diameter of a three-dimensional object. Twenty female and 12 male Taiwanese college students, ages 18-22 years, participated in the current study. Participants were asked to judge the vertical diameter of an elliptical hole within a square plate that was displayed on an LCD monitor. Analysis indicated that the errors in estimated vertical diameter for rotated angles of 20 degrees and 45 degrees were greater than were those for 70 degrees. Additionally, the error of estimated vertical diameter for a rotated angle of 45 degrees was less than was that for 20 degrees. The surface texture also affected errors in estimated vertical diameter: transparent glass was associated with more errors than were wood and metal textures. However, light type had no effect on errors in estimated vertical diameter. These results have implications for the graphics-based design of interfaces.

RESUMO

This study investigates the relationships of the following 5 factors with commonly-used task patterns: 4 (2 existing and 2 newly-designed) built-in cursor input devices of notebook PCs, usage experiences, genders, sensitivity of cursor movements, and 5 tasks of input applications (including click, drag-drop, click-select, select-drag-drop, and type-select-click). This experiment reveals that there are significant differences among these factors in the operating times and/or error rates of particular tasks. Although somewhat influenced by the task patterns, the results show that the touchpad with the cursor-tracking pad located on the bottom-center and the right and left buttons on the bottom-left beneath the keyboard, which avoids ulnar and radial deviation and hindrance of text-entry-pointer-manipulation switching, leads to higher performance and preference, while the trackpoint leads to lower performance and preference. In addition, the touchpads with sensitivity values of 10 and 12 for cursor movement are preferred over those with the value of 8.

RESUMO

The size of a netbook plays an important role in its success. Somehow, the viewing area on screen and ability to type fast were traded off for portability. To further investigate, this study compared the performances of different-sized touchpads, touchscreens, and keyboards of four-sized netbooks for five application tasks. Consequently, the 7" netbook was significantly slower than larger netbooks in all the tasks except the 8.9" netbook touchpad (successive selecting and clicking) or keyboard tasks. Differences were non-significant for the operating times among the 8.9", 10.1", and 11.6" netbooks in all the tasks except between the 8.9" and 11.6" netbooks in keyboards tasks. For error rates, device-type effects rather than size effects were significant. Gender effects were not significant for operating times in all the tasks but for error rates in touchscreen (multi-direction touching) and keyboard tasks. Considering size effects, the 10.1" netbooks seemed to optimally balance between portability and productivity.

RESUMO

Carpet layers have a high prevalence of occupational knee morbidity. One of the main causes is that they need to frequently 'kick' the bumper on the rear end of the knee kicker with one knee when laying a carpet. Considering the bumper's marked effects on kicking force transmission and safety, this study aims to improve the design of the knee-kicker bumper by reducing the risk factors. An improved pendulum-type impact-testing platform was designed as an evaluative apparatus, with the impulse and the coefficient of restitution serving as evaluative criteria. The newly developed bumper has improved firmness from drilled blind holes and an increase in effective forward force of 15%-138%, which implies lower operational demands and a lighter knee burden (i.e., less kicking energy results in the same work efficiency), and a softer contact surface that enhances operating comfort. The newly designed kicker was positively reviewed by subjects.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effects of number of strokes in Chinese characters, flicker rate, flicker type, and character/background color combination on search performance. 37 participants ages 14 to 18 years were randomly assigned to each flicker-type condition. The search field contained 36 characters arranged in a 6 x 6 matrix. Participants were asked to search for the target characters among the surrounding distractors and count how many target characters were displayed in the search array. Analysis indicated that the character/background color combination significantly affected search times. The color combinations of white/purple and white/green yielded search times greater than those for black/white and black/yellow combinations. A significant effect for flicker type on search time was also identified. Rotating characters facilitated search time, compared with twinkling ones. The number of strokes and the flicker rates also had positive effects on search performances. For flicker rate, the search accuracy for 0.5 Hz was greater than that for 1.0 Hz, and the latter was also greater than that for 2.0 Hz. Results are applicable to web advertisement designs containing dynamic characters, in terms of how to best capture readers' attention by various means of dynamic character presentation.
