RESUMO

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) manifests distinct advantages such as multiple structural selectivity, diverse selection of materials, environmental adaptability, low cost, and remarkable conversion efficiency, which becomes a promising technology for micro-nano energy harvesting and self-powered sensing. Tribo-dielectric materials are the fundamental and core components for high-performance TENGs. In particular, the charge generation, dissipation, storage, migration of the dielectrics, and dynamic equilibrium behaviors determine the overall performance. Herein, a comprehensive summary is presented to elucidate the dielectric charge transport mechanism and tribo-dielectric material modification principle toward high-performance TENGs. The contact electrification and charge transport mechanism of dielectric materials is started first, followed by introducing the basic principle and dielectric materials of TENGs. Subsequently, modification mechanisms and strategies for high-performance tribo-dielectric materials are highlighted regarding physical/chemical, surface/bulk, dielectric coupling, and structure optimization. Furthermore, representative applications of dielectric materials based TENGs as power sources, self-powered sensors are demonstrated. The existing challenges and promising potential opportunities for advanced tribo-dielectric materials are outlined, guiding the design, fabrication, and applications of tribo-dielectric materials.

RESUMO

Heat dissipation performance is crucial for the operational reliability of industrial equipment, which can be monitored by detecting the wind or airflow temperature of the radiator. The emergence of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) provides new routes for wind energy harvesting and self-powered sensing. Herein, a rotary wind-driven triboelectric nanogenerator (RW-TENG) with soft-contact working mode is newly designed to achieve tunable contact areas by utilizing the reliable thermal response of NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) to air/wind temperature. The RW-TENG can generate different triboelectric outputs under air stimulation with different speeds or temperatures, which is demonstrated as a power source for online monitoring sensors, self-powered wind speed sensing, and airflow temperature monitoring. Specifically, a self-powered sensor of wind speed is demonstrated with a sensitivity of 0.526 µA m-1 s between 2.2 and 19.6 m s-1, and a self-powered monitoring device of high airflow temperature, which show relatively short response time (109 s), strong anti-interference ability and outstanding long-term durability. This study introduces an innovative route for real-time detection of airflow temperature in wind-cooled industrial equipment, showing broad application prospects for information perception and intelligent sensing of the industrial IoTs.

RESUMO

Plant growth and development are controlled by a complex gene regulatory network, which is currently a focal point of research. It has been established that epigenetic factors play a crucial role in plant growth. Trichomes, specialized appendages that arise from epidermal cells, are of great significance in plant growth and development. As a model system for studying plant development, trichomes possess both commercial and research value. Epigenetic regulation has only recently been implicated in the development of trichomes in a limited number of studies, and microRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation appears to dominate in this context. In light of this, we have conducted a review that explores the interplay between epigenetic regulations and the formation of plant trichomes, building upon existing knowledge of hormones and transcription factors in trichome development. Through this review, we aim to deepen our understanding of the regulatory mechanisms underlying trichome formation and shed light on future avenues of research in the field of epigenetics as it pertains to epidermal hair growth.

RESUMO

The liquid-solid contact electrification mechanism has been explored in the aqueous solution system, but there are few systematic studies on oil-solid triboelectrification. Herein, an oil droplet triboelectric nanogenerator (Oil-droplet TENG) is designed as the probe to investigate the charge transfer properties at oil-solid interface. The charge transfer kinetics process is disclosed by the electrical signals produced, showing that the electron species initially predominated the oil-solid triboelectrification. The molecular structure and electronic properties of oil also affect triboelectric performance. Further, the charge transfer principle in multi-component liquid mixture during the electric double layer (EDL) development process is proposed to explain the component competition effect. As a proof of concept, a tubular-TENG is designed as a self-powered sensor for transformer oil trace water detection. The device demonstrates high water sensitivity with a detection limit of 10 µL L-1 and a response range of 10-100 µL L-1 . This work not only reveals the oil-solid triboelectric and charge transfer competition mechanism in EDL, but also open up a new channel for real-time online monitoring of trace water in transformer oil, which holds promise for information perception and intelligent operation of transformers in the power industry.

RESUMO

Parabens are alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid that are commonly used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Humans are exposed to parabens when they use these products and through diet. There are growing concerns that paraben exposure can adversely impact human health. The endocrine-disrupting and obesogenic properties of parabens have been observed in animal studies and in vitro, prompting the increase in population-based studies of paraben exposure and adiposity-related endpoints. In this review, we summarize epidemiological studies published between 2017 and 2022 that examined paraben exposure in utero, between birth and adolescence, and in adulthood, in relation to adiposity-related measures. Overall, these studies provide some evidence that suggests that paraben exposure, especially during critical development windows, is associated with adiposity-related measures. However, we have noted several limitations in these studies, including the predominance of cross-sectional studies, inconsistent sample collection procedures, and small sample sizes, which should be addressed in future studies.

RESUMO

Fruit glossiness is an important external fruit quality trait for fresh-consumed cucumber fruit, affecting its marketability. Dull fruit appearance is mainly controlled by a single gene, D (for dull fruit) that is dominant to glossy fruit (dd), but the molecular mechanism controlling fruit glossiness is unknown. In the present study, we conducted map-based cloning of the D locus in cucumber and identified a candidate gene (Csa5G577350) that encodes a C2H2-type zinc finger transcription factor, CsDULL. A 4895-bp deletion including the complete loss of CsDULL resulted in glossy fruit. CsDULL is highly expressed in the peel of cucumber fruit, and its expression level is positively correlated with the accumulation of cutin and wax in the peel. Through transcriptome analysis, yeast one-hybrid and dual-luciferase assays, we identified two genes potentially targeted by CsDULL for regulation of cutin and wax biosynthesis/transportation that included CsGPAT4 and CsLTPG1. The possibility that CsDULL controls both fruit glossiness and wart development in cucumber is discussed. The present work advances our understanding of regulatory mechanisms of fruit epidermal traits, and provides a useful tool for molecular breeding to improve external fruit quality in cucumber.

RESUMO

Pollution caused by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has become a major global concern. The association between PFAS-induced hepatotoxicity and gut microbiota in amphibians, particularly at environmentally relevant concentrations, remains elusive. Herein we exposed male black-spotted frogs (Rana nigromaculata) to 1 and 10 µg/L waterborne perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA) for 21 days; subsequently, liver histopathological, oxidative stress, molecular docking, gene/protein expression, and gut microbiome analyses were conducted. PFOS and 6:2 Cl-PFESA exposure enhanced serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities, and markedly increased hepatic area of vacuoles and inflammatory cell infiltration, while PFOA exposure increased serum alanine aminotransferase but not aspartate aminotransferase activities and affected hepatic area of vacuoles and inflammatory cell infiltration to a lesser extent. All three PFASs elevated catalase, glutathione S-transferase, and glutathione peroxidase activities and glutathione and malondialdehyde contents in the liver, suggesting the induction of oxidative stress. Further, PFASs could bind to mitogen-activated protein kinases (p38, ERK, and JNK), upregulating not only their expression but also the expression of downstream oxidative stress-related genes and that of P-p38, P-ERK, and Nrf2 proteins. In addition, PFAS exposure significantly increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Delftia and decreased that of Firmicutes and Dietzia, Mycoplasma, and Methylobacterium-Methylorubrum in the order of PFOS ≈ 6:2 Cl-PFESA > PFOA. Altogether, it appears that PFOS and 6:2 Cl-PFESA are more toxic than PFOA. Finally, microbiota function prediction, microbiota co-occurrence network, and correlation analysis between gut microbiota and liver indices suggested that PFAS-induced hepatotoxicity was associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis. Our data provide new insights into the role of gut microbiota in PFAS-induced hepatotoxicity in frogs.

RESUMO

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), which is the most widely employed brominated flame retardant, and its alternative tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA) are widely distributed in aquatic environments. In the present study, the hepatotoxicity induced by TBBPA and TCBPA was investigated in Rana nigromaculata, and the potential mechanisms were investigated with a particular focus on ROS (reactive oxygen species) -dependent mitochondria-mediated apoptosis. Healthy adult frogs were exposed to 0, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/L waterborne TBBPA and TCBPA for 14 days. The results showed that liver weight was significantly increased by 51.52%-98.99% in the 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/L TBBPA and TCBPA groups relative to the control. Histological examination revealed that the structure of the liver, to some extent, was influenced by TBBPA and TCBPA with nuclear shrinkage and mitochondrial swelling. Meanwhile, TBBPA and TCBPA have significantly increased the alanine transaminase level in serum and the content of ROS, while inhibiting the activity of superoxide dismutase in the liver. In addition, DNA fragments were observed in the TBBPA and TCBPA groups relative to the control. Expression of Cytochrome C was significantly increased by 1.13-, 1.38-, 1.60-, and 2.46-fold in 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/L TBBPA, and by 1.26-, 1.51-, 2.14-, and 2.98- fold in 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/L TCBPA, respectively, which indicated that TCBPA may be more toxic than TBBPA. Similarly, the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 was increased in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicated that apoptosis in the ROS-dependent mitochondrial pathway mediates hepatotoxicity caused by TBBPA and TCBPA. The present study will facilitate an understanding of the toxicity mechanism of flame retardants.

RESUMO

17,18-Epoxyeicosatetraenoic acid (17,18-EEQ) and 19,20-epoxydocosapentaenoic acid (19,20-EDP) are bioactive epoxides produced from n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, respectively. However, these epoxides are quickly metabolized into less active diols by soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH). We have previously demonstrated that an sEH inhibitor, t-TUCB, decreased serum triglycerides (TG) and increased lipid metabolic protein expression in the brown adipose tissue (BAT) of diet-induced obese mice. This study investigates the preventive effects of t-TUCB (T) alone or combined with 19,20-EDP (T + EDP) or 17,18-EEQ (T + EEQ) on BAT activation in the development of diet-induced obesity and metabolic disorders via osmotic minipump delivery in mice. Both T + EDP and T + EEQ groups showed significant improvement in fasting glucose, serum triglycerides, and higher core body temperature, whereas heat production was only significantly increased in the T + EEQ group. Moreover, both the T + EDP and T + EEQ groups showed less lipid accumulation in the BAT. Although UCP1 expression was not changed, PGC1α expression was increased in all three treated groups. In contrast, the expression of CPT1A and CPT1B, which are responsible for the rate-limiting step for fatty acid oxidation, was only increased in the T + EDP and T + EEQ groups. Interestingly, as a fatty acid transporter, CD36 expression was only increased in the T + EEQ group. Furthermore, both the T + EDP and T + EEQ groups showed decreased inflammatory NFκB signaling in the BAT. Our results suggest that 17,18-EEQ or 19,20-EDP combined with t-TUCB may prevent high-fat diet-induced metabolic disorders, in part through increased thermogenesis, upregulating lipid metabolic protein expression, and decreasing inflammation in the BAT.

RESUMO

Plant glandular trichomes (GTs) are epidermal outgrowths with the capacity to biosynthesize and secrete specialized metabolites, that are of great scientific and practical significance. Our understanding of the developmental process of GTs is limited, and no single plant species serves as a unique model. Here, we review the genetic mechanisms of GT initiation and development and provide a summary of the biosynthetic pathways of GT-specialized metabolites in nonmodel plant species, especially horticultural crops. We discuss the morphology and classification of GT types. Moreover, we highlight technological advancements in methods employed for investigating GTs. Understanding the molecular basis of GT development and specialized metabolites not only offers useful avenues for research in plant breeding that will lead to the improved production of desirable metabolites, but also provides insights for plant epidermal development research.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the duration of SARS-CoV-2 persistence in quarantine hotel environments. METHODS: 39 Patients confirmed by RT-PCR were included. We collected clinical features, laboratory test results, smear sample information, and quarantine room information. Genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis were conducted. We analyzed the factors associated with environmental contamination. RESULT: Among 39 COVID-19 cases, 10 were asymptomatic and 37 were imported from aboard. We collected 271 swab samples from environmental surfaces related to observational patients. Eighteen swab samples from seven patients were positive. The highest contamination rates occurred on cups (100%), followed by hand sink (12.82%), toilet seat and flush (7.89%), telephone (5.56%), bedside table (5.56%), and floor drain (5.41%). The results showed that environmental surface contamination was associated with the clinical cycle threshold values for patients (P = 0.01) and the sampling interval time after the cases left their rooms (P = 0.03). The duration of environmental surface contamination was associated with the wet status of the sampling site (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: Our findings showed that environmental contamination might be attributed to the viral load in the respiratory tracts of patients and the sampling interval time after the cases left their rooms. Moist surfaces were more vulnerable to remaining SARS-CoV-2 RNA-positive. Our study highlights the importance of implementing strict chemical disinfection strategies in quarantine rooms.

RESUMO

Nonlinear optical wave mixing is a widely used method to produce light with new frequencies that has a significant impact on laser technology and optical imaging. The most important figure of merit in wave-mixing processes, i.e., high conversion efficiency, is always required in laser applications. We demonstrate a method to recover high conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation in a BaMgF4 single crystal with weakly scattering defects via feedback-based wavefront shaping under birefringent phase-matching condition. By optimizing the fundamental wavefront, a typical second harmonic output with an enhancement factor of 1.14 and a corresponding recovery efficiency of 86.3% is displayed. This investigation may modify the wide understanding of scattering in crystals and provide an avenue to recover the nonlinear optical conversion efficiency in crystals with various defects without special fabrications.
