RESUMO

Aqueous supercapacitors exhibit the advantage of high cycling stability, inherent safety and appealing energy density, and thus have long been considered an exceptional technology for efficient energy storage. However, in the absence of an electric field, the spontaneous transmembrane diffusion of ions leads to self-discharge or energy decay of supercapacitors. Herein, we propose a phase transformation strategy to design a porous regenerated cellulose and polyvinylidene difluoride composite separator with ion selectivity by utilizing cellulose dissolution regeneration with PVDF enhancement. Specifically, the anion selective property of PVDF screens the transmembrane diffusion of electrolyte ions, thereby suppressing the self-discharge of supercapacitors. The in-depth characterization indicated that the RC@PVDF separator applied to aqueous supercapacitors demonstrated high performance by maintaining a capacitance of 173 F g-1 after 20,000 cycles. After 24 h of self-discharge, the supercapacitor retained 59 % of its energy. In addition, the cross-linked network of regenerated cellulose provides critical properties for the ion-selective separator, including strong mechanical stability, excellent thermal stability (220 °C) and uniform pore structure (31 nm). This work is anticipated to provide considerable insight into the creative design of self-discharge suppression separators for long-term energy storage supercapacitors.

RESUMO

How to optimize ion-exchange membrane materials has been the key for researchers recently working on the use of reverse electrodialysis to harvest osmotic energy. Based on the considerations of improving membrane performance and conversion to large-area industrial production, this work first proposes an easy-industrialized strategy to treat bacterial cellulose membranes by hot pressing and hot pressing with etherification modification, and then to obtain anion-selective and cation-selective membrane pairs (PBC-M and NBC-M) with opposite charges. The PBC-M obtained by multi-step treatment has excellent hydrophobicity, good surface charge density, and more favorable nanochannel size for the functioning of double layer. The maximum output power density of 44.1 mW m-2 was obtained in artificial river water and seawater simulated salinity gradient power generation. Applied to a larger test area, the power output of the system where a single membrane is located can reach 2.2 × 10-3 mW, which is ahead of similar experimental products. The two membranes prepared can also be used in combination, which provides a new idea for full cell design. It's important to open up a new route for optimizing nanofluidic channel design, regulating ion flux transport, and advancing the large-scale industrialization of biomass nanofluidic membrane RED system.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Endometrial carcinoma (EC) is a malignant tumor of the female reproductive tract that has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to identify biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for EC. METHODS: A publicly available transcriptome data set comprising 587 EC cases was subjected to a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis to identify candidate genes responsible for EC occurrence and development. Next, we used clinical samples and cell experiments for validation. RESULTS: A total of 1,617 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Analysis of patient survival outcomes revealed that BUB1, BUB1B, CCNA2, and CDCA8 were correlated with prognosis in patients with EC. Moreover, assessment of clinical samples confirmed that BUB1, BUB1B, CCNA2 and CDCA8 were strongly expressed in EC tissues. Additionally, bioinformatics and luciferase reporter assays confirmed that miR-524-5p can target and regulate these four genes. Overexpression of miR-524-5p significantly inhibited EC Ishikawa cells viability, migration and invasion. Inhibition of miR-524-5p showed the opposite results. CONCLUSIONS: Expression of miR-524-5p reduced the migration and invasion of Ishikawa EC cells, and decreased BUB1, BUB1B, CCNA2, and CDCA8 expression. miR-524-5p, as well as BUB1, BUB1B, CCNA2, and CDCA8, may be clinically relevant biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of EC.

RESUMO

Separators in supercapacitors (SCs) typically suffer from defects of low mechanical property, limited ion transport, and electrolyte wettability, and poor thermal stability, impeding the development of SCs. Herein, high-performance regenerated cellulose (RC) based separators are designed that are fabricated by effective hydrolytic etching of inorganic CaCO3 nanoparticles from a filled RC membrane. The as-prepared RC separator displays excellent comprehensive performances such as higher tensile strength (75.83 MPa) and thermal stability (200 °C), which is superior to commercial polypropylene-based separator (Celgard 2500) and sufficient to maintain their structural integrity even at temperatures in excess of 200 °C. Benefiting from its hydrophilicity, high porosity, and outstanding electrolyte uptake rate (208.5%), the RC separator exhibits rapid transport and permeability of ions, which is 2.5× higher than that of the commercial nonwoven polypropylene separator (NKK -MPF30AC-100) validated by electrochemical tests in the 1.0 m Na2 SO4 electrolyte. Results show that porous RC separator with unique advantages of superior electrolyte wettability, mechanical robustness, and high thermal stability, is a promising separator for SCs with high-performance and safety.

RESUMO

It is well known that hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy achieves neuroprotective effects by modulating neuroinflammatory responses. However, its underlying therapeutic mechanisms are not yet fully elucidated. Based on our previous studies, we further investigated whether HBO therapy exerts neuroprotective effects in vivo by regulating the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB)/ mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand (CXCL)1 inflammatory pathway. In our study, a rat model of traumatic brain injury (TBI) was established by controlled cortical impact (CCI) to verify that the expression of CXCL1 and chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor (CXCR)2 increased after TBI, and CXCL1 was mainly expressed in astrocytes, while CXCR2 was mainly expressed in neurons. Increased apoptosis of cortical nerve cells in the injured cortex was also found after TBI. Reduced nerve cell apoptosis with improved neurological function was observed after application of a CXCR2 antagonist. The expression of phospho-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (p-ERK), phospho-c-Jun N-terminal kinase (p-JNK) and p-NF-κB increased after TBI, and application of ERK, JNK and NF-κB inhibitors decreased expression of CXCL1 and CXCR2 in rats. We further found that HBO therapy down-regulated the expression of p-ERK, p-JNK, p-NF-κB, CXCL1, and CXCR2, and reduced nerve cell apoptosis, improved the neurological function of TBI rats, and ultimately alleviated the secondary injury. In conclusion, HBO therapy may exert neuroprotective effect by regulating the NF-κB/MAPKs (JNK and ERK)-CXCL1 inflammatory pathways following TBI, which probably provide the theoretical and experimental basis for the clinical application of HBO therapy in the treatment of TBI.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of Diane-35 versus Diane-35 + metformin on metabolic parameters in Chinese PCOS patients. METHODS: Patients getting individualized life-style modification were treated with Diane-35. Metformin was added according to its indication. Within a 3-month prospective study, metabolic parameters were assessed. RESULTS: Eighty-three patients were recruited, 45 using Diane-35 and 38 Diane-35 plus metformin. Using Diane-35, triglycerides (TG) (p < 0.05) and tendencially (p < 0.1) total cholesterol (TC) increased, but significant positive effects on BMI, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and HDL-C/TC ratio were observed. Other lipids and the parameters for glucose metabolism remained unchanged. In the combination group, no negative effect on TG and TC was seen, other lipid fractions improved, as well as BMI, % body fat, and all parameters for glucose metabolism like fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting insulin, HOMA-insulin-resistance index, and insulin sensitivity index (ISI), whereby the beneficial effect of metformin got significance compared with Diane-35 for BMI, FPG, and ISI. CONCLUSION: With the exception of increasing triglycerides, Diane-35 had no relevant negative effects in the metabolic system. It does not negatively impact the beneficial effects of metformin in lipids and glucose metabolism. Diane-35 plus metformin is effective in improving the metabolic profile of Chinese PCOS patients.

RESUMO

Biodiesel quality associated with biochemical components of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Scenedesmus obliquus under different nitrate levels were investigated. The highest lipid contents of 54.5% for C. pyrenoidosa and 47.7% for S. obliquus were obtained in nitrate absence. Carbohydrate peaked at 0.3gL(-1) with values of 40.7% for C. pyrenoidosa and 42.5% for S. obliquus. Protein content seemed species dependent, which decreased substantially to 11.2% in C. pyrenoidosa and 8.8% in S. obliquus under nitrate absence in present research. Better biodiesel quality (e.g. cetane number >58, iodine value <69) could be obtained from C. pyrenoidosa in nitrate absence and S. obliquus in 0.3gL(-1), where the highest saturated fatty acids (39.5 for C. pyrenoidosa, 31.2 for S. obliquus) and the lowest unsaturated fatty acids (60.5 for C. pyrenoidosa, 68.8 for S. obliquus) were obtained. These results suggest that microalgae grown in the presence of nitrogen may limit biodiesel quality.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Objective was to evaluate anti-Müllerian-hormone (AMH) and parameters for insulin resistance (IR) in the main phenotypes of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and to investigate their correlation for the first time in non-obese Chinese women. METHODS: Within this prospective study, 160 PCOS cases and 40 healthy women, matched by age and BMI, were included. In four groups (n = 40) according to the four phenotypes of PCOS by definition of the National Institute of Health (2012), AMH, ovarian volume and number of follicles 2-9 mm were assessed as well as insulin resistance indexes (Homeostatic Model Assessment) (HOMA-IR) and Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index (QUICKI). RESULTS: AMH levels were higher in PCOS than in controls, with differences comparing the phenotypes, highest in the group with all three criteria for PCOS. However, for HOMA-IR and QUICKI and correlation to AMH no significant differences were found. CONCLUSIONS: AMH is a useful parameter to assess in the different phenotypes the severity of PCOS, and to compare with healthy women, for the first time demonstrated in Chinese patients. In contrast, the parameters for IR and their relation to AMH did not show clear differences comparing the four phenotypes, and need further investigation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Aim was to evaluate anti-Müllerian-hormone (AMH) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) comparing with normo-ovulatory women, and to assess for the first time AMH levels across reproductive lifespan in Chinese women. METHODS: Within the prospective cross-sectional study in PCOS cases and in normal subjects, AMH and other hormone levels were measured in early follicular phase in five age groups. Additionally ovarian ultrasound parameters were assessed. RESULTS: A total of 437 PCOS patients and 150 normo-ovulatory women matched by age were included. AMH levels were 2- to 3-fold higher in PCOS cases. In both groups AMH decreased with age in a non-linear pattern. In normo-ovulatory women AMH levels were relatively constant from 18 to 25 years and then declined with age. In contrast, AMH in PCOS cases declined with an increasing rate from 18 to 45 years, narrowing the difference in older women. CONCLUSIONS: AMH may be a useful parameter to assess the severity and prognosis of PCOS since certain differences exist to normo-ovulatory women. Further studies may improve the understanding of the relationship between AMH levels and age, providing more scientific basis for fertility counselling for both healthy women and PCOS cases.
