RESUMO

To explore the efficacy and safety of butylphthalide combined with idebenone in the treatment of vascular dementia. The clinical data of 126 patients with vascular dementia who were admitted to our hospital between March 2021 and February 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Among them, 62 patients received butylphthalide alone (single group) and 64 patients received butylphthalide combined with idebenone (combined group). Cognitive function scores, serum inflammatory factor levels, oxidative stress index levels, and incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the 2 groups before and after treatment. After treatment, the Hasegawa Dementia Scale, Mini Mental State Examination Scale, and activities of daily living scores in both groups were higher than before treatment, and the scores in the combined group were higher than before treatment (P < .05). After treatment, the levels of serum C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin 6 in both groups were lower than those before treatment, and those in the combined group were lower than those in the simple group (P < .05). After treatment, the levels of serum glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in the 2 groups were higher than those before treatment, and the level of malondialdehyde was lower than that before treatment. The levels of serum glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in the combined group were higher than those in the simple group, and the level of malondialdehyde was lower than that in the simple group (P < .05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the combined group (6.25%) and the simple group (3.23%) (P > .05). Compared with butylphthalide alone, intervention of butylphthalide combined with idebenone on vascular dementia can effectively reduce the degree of inflammatory and oxidative stress reactions, improve cognitive function, and promote the ability to perform activities of daily living in a safe manner.

RESUMO

The type VI secretion system (T6SS) of many gram-negative bacteria injects toxic effectors into adjacent cells to manipulate host cells during pathogenesis or to kill competing bacteria. However, the identification and function of the T6SS effectors remains only partly known. Pantoea ananatis, a gram-negative bacterium, is commonly found in various plants and natural environments, including water and soil. In the current study, genomic analysis of P. ananatis DZ-12 causing brown stalk rot on maize demonstrated that it carries three T6SS gene clusters, namely, T6SS-1, T6SS-2, and T6SS-3. Interestingly, only T6SS-1 secretion systems are involved in pathogenicity and bacterial competition. The study also investigated the T6SS-1 system in detail and identified an unknown T6SS-1-secreted effector TseG by using the upstream T6SS effector chaperone TecG containing a conserved domain of DUF2169. TseG can directly interact with the chaperone TecG for delivery and with a downstream immunity protein TsiG for protection from its toxicity. TseG, highly conserved in the Pantoea genus, is involved in virulence in maize, potato, and onion. Additionally, P. ananatis uses TseG to target Escherichia coli, gaining a competitive advantage. This study provides the first report on the T6SS-1-secreted effector from P. ananatis, thereby enriching our understanding of the various types and functions of type VI effector proteins.

RESUMO

The plant rapid alkalinization factor (RALF) peptides function as key regulators in cell growth and immune responses through the receptor kinase FERONIA (FER). In this study, we report that the transcription factor FgPacC binds directly to the promoter of FgRALF gene, which encodes a functional homologue of the plant RALF peptides from the wheat head blight fungus Fusarium graminearum (FgRALF). More importantly, FgPacC promotes fungal infection via host immune suppression by activating the expression of FgRALF. The FgRALF peptide also exhibited typical activities of plant RALF functions, such as inducing plant alkalinization and inhibiting cell growth, including wheat (Triticum aestivum), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and Arabidopsis thaliana. We further identified the wheat receptor kinase FERONIA (TaFER), which is capable of restoring the defects of the A. thaliana FER mutant. In addition, we found that FgRALF peptide binds to the extracellular malectin-like domain (ECD) of TaFER (TaFERECD ) to suppress the PAMP-triggered immunity (PTI) and cell growth. Overexpression of TaFERECD in A. thaliana confers plant resistance to F. graminearum and protects from FgRALF-induced cell growth inhibition. Collectively, our results demonstrate that the fungal pathogen-secreted RALF mimic suppresses host immunity and inhibits cell growth via plant FER receptor. This establishes a novel pathway for the development of disease-resistant crops in the future without compromising their yield potential.

RESUMO

China, the world's largest consumer and producer of pork in the world, is attracting increasing attention due to the environmental impacts of its pig production. Previous studies seldom comprehensively compare the environmental impacts of the pig production system with different models, resulting in different intensities of environmental impacts. We aim to comprehensively evaluate Chinese pig production with different breeding models and explore a more sustainable way for pig production. We use life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate and compare environmental impacts of pig production system with four main breeding models in China from 1998 to 2020: domestic breeding, small-scale breeding, medium-scale breeding, and large-scale breeding. The life cycle encompasses fertilizer production, feed production, feed processing, pig raising, waste treatment, and slaughtering. The impact categories including energy consumption (EN), global warming (GWP), acidification (AP), eutrophication (EU), water use (WD), and land occupation (LO) are expressed with "100 kg live weight of fattening pig at farm gate." The results show that driven by governmental support, growing meat demand, and cost advantage, the scale breeding especially large-scale breeding simultaneously yielded greater net economic benefit and less environmental impact compared to other breeding models especially the domestic breeding. Due to mineral fertilizer application, feed production contributed over 50% of the total environmental impacts. Notably, the composition of feeds exerted significant influence on the environmental impacts arising from fertilizer production and feed processing. Furthermore, attributable to the substantial use of electricity and heat, as well as the concomitant emissions, pig raising contributed the largest GWP, while ranking second in terms of AP and EU. Notably, waste management constituted the third-largest EU, AP, and WD. In addition to promote scale breeding, we put forth several sustainable measures encompassing feed composition, cultivation practices, fertilizer utilization, and waste management for consideration.

RESUMO

Bacillus spp. has been widely used as a biocontrol agent to control plant diseases. However, little is known about mechanisms of the protein MAMP secreted by Bacillus spp. Herein, our study reported a glycoside hydrolase family 30 (GH30) protein, BpXynC, produced by the biocontrol bacteria Bacillus paralicheniformis NMSW12, that can induce cell death in several plant species. The results revealed that the recombinant protein triggers cell death in Nicotiana benthamiana in a BAK1-dependent manner and elicits an early defense response, including ROS burst, activation of MAPK cascades, and upregulation of plant immunity marker genes. BpXynC was also found to be a glucuronoxylanase that exhibits hydrolysis activity on xlyan. Two mutants of BpXynC which lost the glucuronoxylanase activity still retained the elicitor activity. The qRT-PCR results of defense-related genes showed that BpXynC induces plant immunity responses via an SA-mediated pathway. BpXynC and its mutants could induce resistance in N. benthamiana against infection by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). Furthermore, BpXynC-treated tomato fruits exhibited strong resistance to the infection of Phytophthora capsica. Overall, our study revealed that GH30 protein BpXynC can induce plant immunity response as MAMP, which can be further applied as a biopesticide to control plant diseases.

RESUMO

Bivalent histone modifications, including functionally opposite H3K4me3 and H3K27me3 marks simultaneously on the same nucleosome, control various cellular processes by fine-tuning the gene expression in eukaryotes. However, the role of bivalent histone modifications in fungal virulence remains elusive. By mapping the genome-wide landscape of H3K4me3 and H3K27me3 dynamic modifications in Fusarium graminearum (Fg) during invasion, we identify the infection-related bivalent chromatin-marked genes (BCGs). BCG1 gene, which encodes a secreted Fusarium-specific xylanase containing a G/Q-rich motif, displays the highest increase of bivalent modification during Fg infection. We report that the G/Q-rich motif of BCG1 is a stimulator of its xylanase activity and is essential for the full virulence of Fg. Intriguingly, this G/Q-rich motif is recognized by pattern-recognition receptors to trigger plant immunity. We discover that Fg employs H3K4me3 modification to induce BCG1 expression required for host cell wall degradation. After breaching the cell wall barrier, this active chromatin state is reset to bivalency by co-modifying with H3K27me3, which enables epigenetic silencing of BCG1 to escape from host immune surveillance. Collectively, our study highlights how fungal pathogens deploy bivalent epigenetic modification to achieve temporally-coordinated activation and suppression of a critical fungal gene, thereby facilitating successful infection and host immune evasion.

RESUMO

Personality traits are commonly regarded as relatively stable, whereas life satisfaction can fluctuate with time and circumstances, shaped by external influences and personal encounters. The correlation between personality traits and life satisfaction is well-established, yet the underlying neural mechanisms of the myelin-based microstructural brain network connecting them remain unclear. Here, we constructed individual-level whole-brain myelin microstructural networks from the MRI data of 1,043 healthy adults and performed correlation analysis to detect significant personality trait-related and life satisfaction-related subnetworks. A mediation analysis was used to verify whether the shared structural basis of personality traits and life satisfaction significantly mediated their association. The results showed that agreeableness positively correlated with life satisfaction. We identified a shared structural basis of the personality trait of agreeableness and life satisfaction. The regions comprising this overlapping network include the superior parietal lobule, inferior parietal lobule, and temporoparietal junction. Moreover, the shared microstructural connections mediate the association between the personality trait of agreeableness and life satisfaction. This large-scale neuroimaging investigation substantiates a mediation framework for understanding the microstructural connections between personality and life satisfaction, offering potential targets for assessment and interventions to promote human well-being.

RESUMO

Digital inclusive finance (DIF) has been growing fast in recent years in China, and green technology innovation (GTI) is strongly promoted by the Chinese government. The coordinated development of DIF and GTI is important for China's economic transition to high-quality development. Therefore, utilizing the panel data of 288 prefecture cities from 2011 to 2020 in China, the research evaluates the coupling coordination degree between DIF and GTI (CCD-DG), analyzes spatial-temporal characteristics of CCD-DG, explores its regional disparities and finally analyzes its spatial effects. Results demonstrate that CCD-DG at the prefecture-city level showed a rise from 2011 to 2020, but the degree was only in the stage of basic coordination till 2020, which was mainly driven by the development of DIF in recent years. The regional disparities in CCD-DG remarkably existed but gradually narrowed down during the observation period, which mainly originated from the between-subregions differences as a result of the huge difference in GTI. Additionally, there was a significant spatial spillover effect of CCD-DG and its spatial distribution was roughly consistent with the spatial effect layout. Policy implications based on these results are finally proposed, including formulating policies with local characteristics to promote CCD-DG, emphasizing the discrepancies of CCD-DG between the East and the Northwest, and that within the Northwest and the South, etc.

RESUMO

Aerogel is widely recognized as a superinsulating material with great potential for enhancing the thermal insulation performance of building walls. It can be applied in various forms such as aerogel plasters (AP), aerogel fibrous composites (AFC), and aerogel concrete (AC) in practical engineering applications. This study aims to investigate the most efficient application form for maximizing building insulation performance while minimizing the amount of aerogel used. To predict the thermal insulation performance of aerogel-insulated walls, a resistance-capacitance network model integrating the aerogels' effective thermal conductivity model was developed and was validated by comparing it with Fluent simulation software results in terms of surface temperature. Using the validated models, the thermophysical parameters, transient thermal properties, and transmission load were predicted and compared among AP, AFC, and AC walls. The results indicate that using AFC can result in approximately 50% cost savings to achieve the same thermal resistance. After adding a 20 mm thickness of aerogel to the reference wall without aerogel, the AFC wall exhibited the highest improvement in thermal insulation performance, reaching 46.0-53.5%, followed by the AP wall, and then the AC wall, aligning with considerations of microstructural perspectives, thermal resistance distributions, and thermal non-uniformity factors. Therefore, giving priority to AFC use could reduce the required amount of silica aerogel and enhance economic efficiency. These results provide valuable insights for theoretical models and the application of aerogel-insulated walls in building engineering insulation.

RESUMO

Rhizoctonia solani and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) are the two major diseases affecting the quality and quantity of rice production. In the current study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of Bacillus spp. were used as green biocontrol agents for plant diseases. In in vitro experiments, Bacillus spp. FZB42, NMTD17, and LLTC93-VOCs displayed strong antimicrobial volatile activity with inhibition rates of 76, 66, and 78% for R. solani and 78, 81, and 76% for Xoo, respectively, compared to control. The synthetic VOCs, namely Pentadecane (PDC), Benzaldehyde (BDH), 1,2-Benz isothiazol-3(2H)-one (1,2-BIT), and mixture (MIX) of VOCs showed high volatile activity with inhibition rates of 86, 86, 89, and 92% against R. solani and 81, 81, 82, and 86%, respectively, against Xoo as compared to control. In addition, the scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM and TEM) analyses were performed to examine the effect of Bacillus and synthetic VOC treatments on R. solani and Xoo morphology. The analysis revealed the deformed and irregularized morphology of R. solani mycelia and Xoo cells after VOC treatments. The microscopic analysis showed that the rapid inhibition was due to severe oxidative productions inside the R. solani mycelia and Xoo cells. By using molecular docking, it was determined that the synthetic VOCs entered the active binding site of trehalase and NADH dehydrogenase proteins, causing R. solani and Xoo cells to die prematurely and an accumulation of ROS. In the greenhouse experiment, FZB42, NMTD17, and LLTC93-VOCs significantly reduced the lesions of R. solani 8, 7, and 6 cm, and Xoo 7, 6, and 6 cm, respectively, then control. The synthetic VOCs demonstrated that the PDC, BDH, 1,2-BIT, and MIX-VOCs significantly reduced R. solani lesions on leaves 6, 6, 6, and 5 cm and Xoo 6, 5, 5, and 4 cm, respectively, as compared to control. Furthermore, plant defence-related genes and antioxidant enzymes were upregulated in rice plants. These findings provide novel mechanisms by which Bacillus antimicrobial VOCs control plant diseases.

RESUMO

Soil beneficial bacteria can effectively inhibit bacterial pathogens by assembling contact-dependent killing weapons, such as the type IVA secretion system (T4ASS). It's not clear whether these antibacterial weapons are involved in biotrophic microbial interactions in soil. Here we showed that an antifungal antibiotic 2,4-DAPG production of the soil bacterium, Pseudomonas protegens can be triggered by another soil bacterium, Lysobacter enzymogenes, via T4ASS by co-culturing on agar plates to mimic cell-to-cell contact. We demonstrated that the induced 2,4-DAPG production of P. protegens is achieved by intracellular detection of the T4ASS effector protein Le1519 translocated from L. enzymogenes. We defined Le1519 as LtaE (Lysobacter T4E triggering antifungal effects), which specifically stimulates the expression of 2,4-DAPG biosynthesis genes in P. protegens, thereby protecting soybean seedlings from infection by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani. We further found that LtaE directly bound to PhlF, a pathway-specific transcriptional repressor of the 2,4-DAPG biosynthesis, then activated the 2,4-DAPG production. Our results highlight a novel pattern of microbial interspecies and interkingdom interactions, providing a unique case for expanding the diversity of soil microbial interactions.

RESUMO

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), produced by a variety of microbial species and used as biological agents, have been demonstrated to play a significant role in controlling phytopathogens. In continuation of our previous studies, we aim to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and pathways involved in interactions between pathogens and microbial VOCs. In the current study, we tested how VOCs produced by Bacillus velezensis FZB42 affect the growth of Ralstonia solanacearum TBBS1 in vitro.Query The result showed that the colony growth of R. solanacearum was reduced with an inhibition rate of 0.83 ± 0.043 as compared to the control 1.7 ± 0.076, respectively. The number of viable cells of R. solanacearum was significantly decreased to 7.68 CFU/mL as compared to the control (9.02 CFU/mL). In addition, transcriptomic analysis of R. solanacearum in response to VOCs produced by FZB42 was performed to better understand the effect of VOCs on R. solanacearum. The transcriptional response of R. solanacearum to FZB42-VOCs was determined using an Illumina RNA-seq approach. The results revealed significant changes in the expression of 2094 R. solanacearum genes, including 593 upregulated and 1501 downregulated genes. To validate the RNA-seq results, the expression of 10 genes was quantified using RT-qPCR. Furthermore, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases were used to functionally annotate differentially expressed genes. Significant changes were observed in genes directly or indirectly related to virulence, including those related to bacterial invasion, motility, chemotaxis, and secretion systems. Overall, RNA-seq profiling provides new insights into the possible fundamental molecular mechanisms that are responsible for the reduction in growth and virulence of R. solanacearum upon application of FZB42-VOC.

RESUMO

The gram-positive bacterium Bacillus velezensis strain DMW1 produces a high level of antimicrobial metabolites that can suppress the growth of phytopathogens. We investigated the mechanism used by degQ and the degS/degU two-component system to regulate the biocontrol characteristics of DMW1. When degQ and degU were deleted, the biofilm formation, cell motility, colonization activities, and antifungal abilities of ΔdegQ and ΔdegU were significantly reduced compared to wild-type DMW1. The expression levels of biofilm-related genes (epsA, epsB, epsC, and tasA) and swarming-related genes (swrA and swrB) were all down-regulated. We also evaluated the impact on secondary metabolites of these two genes. The degQ and degU genes reduced surfactin and macrolactin production and up-regulated the production of fengycin, iturin, bacillaene, and difficidin metabolites. The reverse transcription-quantitative PCR results were consistent with these observations. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay and microscale thermophoresis revealed that DegU can bind to the promoter regions of these six antimicrobial metabolite genes and regulate their synthesis. In conclusion, we provided systematic evidence to demonstrate that the degQ and degU genes are important regulators of multicellular behaviour and antimicrobial metabolic processes in B. velezensis DMW1 and suggested novel amenable strains to be used for the industrial production of antimicrobial metabolites.

RESUMO

The increasing human demand for high-quality animal protein has provided impetus for the development of aquaculture. Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is a catadromous species rapidly being cultured in China but scientific literature documenting its life cycle environmental and economic consequences remains scarce. This study aims to address this gap by examining the spatio-temporal evolution of crab aquaculture in China since the 2000s and evaluating the environmental and economic characteristics along its life-cycle stages: megalopa, juvenile crab, and adult crab cultivation. The geostatistical analysis shows a more dispersed pattern of crab aquaculture nationally as crab grows, with coastal provinces that have brackish water for megalopa cultivation but wider spatial coverage for juvenile and adult crab cultivation. Our findings reveal that the production of 1 ton of live-weight crab results in 7.65 ton of CO2 equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing previous estimates for finfish fish production by approximately 50%. Most environmental pressures occur during the adult crab cultivation stage, with significant contributions from upstream processes such as electricity and feed production. By comparing between different production systems, our study shows that crab aquaculture in lake systems performs better than pond systems in terms of most global environmental impact categories and economic considerations. This work contributes to the existing literature by elucidating the spatio-temporal changes of crab aquaculture boom in China and constructing a representative life cycle data pool that broadens the benchmark knowledge on its environmental and economic characteristics. We highlight the trade-offs between environmental and economic performance as well as the balance between global and local environmental impacts to promote sustainable growth in the aquaculture industry.

RESUMO

Introduction: Apathy is a prevalent mood disturbance that occurs in a wide range of populations, including those with normal cognitive aging, mental disorders, neurodegenerative disorders and traumatic brain injuries. Recently, neuroimaging technologies have been employed to elucidate the neural substrates underlying brain disorders accompanying apathy. However, the consistent neural correlates of apathy across normal aging and brain disorders are still unclear. Methods: This paper first provides a brief review of the neural mechanism of apathy in healthy elderly individuals, those with mental disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, and traumatic brain injuries. Further, following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, the structural and functional neuroimaging meta-analysis using activation likelihood estimation method is performed on the apathy group with brain disorders and the healthy elderly, aiming at exploring the neural correlates of apathy. Results: The structural neuroimaging meta-analysis showed that gray matter atrophy is associated with apathy in the bilateral precentral gyrus (BA 13/6), bilateral insula (BA 47), bilateral medial frontal gyrus (BA 11), bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, left caudate (putamen) and right anterior cingulate, while the functional neuroimaging meta-analysis suggested that the functional connectivity in putamen and lateral globus pallidus is correlated with apathy. Discussion: Through the neuroimaging meta-analysis, this study has identified the potential neural locations of apathy in terms of brain structure and function, which may offer valuable pathophysiological insights for developing more effective therapeutic interventions for affected patients.

RESUMO

The interaction between plant and bacterial VOCs has been extensively studied, but the role of VOCs in growth promotion still needs to be explored. In the current study, we aim to explore the growth promotion mechanisms of cold-tolerant Bacillus strains GBAC46 and RJGP41 and the well-known PGPR strain FZB42 and their VOCs on tomato plants. The result showed that the activity of phytohormone (IAA) production was greatly improved in GBAC46 and RJGP41 as compared to FZB42 strains. The in vitro and in-pot experiment results showed that the Bacillus VOCs improved plant growth traits in terms of physiological parameters as compared to the CK. The VOCs identified through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, namely 2 pentanone, 3-ethyl (2P3E) from GBAC46, 1,3-cyclobutanediol,2,2,4,4-tetramethyl (CBDO) from RJGP41, and benzaldehyde (BDH) from FZB42, were used for plant growth promotion. The results of the partition plate (I-plate) and in-pot experiments showed that all the selected VOCs (2P3E, CBDO, and BDH) promoted plant growth parameters as compared to CK. Furthermore, the root morphological factors also revealed that the selected VOCs improved the root physiological traits in tomato plants. The plant defense enzymes (POD, APX, SOD, and CAT) and total protein contents were studied, and the results showed that the antioxidant enzymes and protein contents significantly increased as compared to CK. Similarly, plant growth promotion expression genes (IAA4, ARF10A, GA2OX2, CKX2, and EXP1) were significantly upregulated and the ERF gene was downregulated as compared to CK. The overall findings suggest that both Bacillus isolates and their pure VOCs positively improved plant growth promotion activities by triggering the antioxidant enzyme activity, protein contents, and relative gene expressions in tomato plants.

RESUMO

Broomcorn millet Huangjiu brewing is usually divided into primary fermentation and post-fermentation. Microbial succession is the major factor influencing the development of the typical Huangjiu flavor. Here, we report the changes in flavor substances and microbial community during the primary fermentation of broomcorn millet Huangjiu. Results indicated that a total of 161 volatile flavor compounds were measured during primary fermentation, and estragole was detected for the first time in broomcorn millet Huangjiu. A total of 82 bacteria genera were identified. Pediococcus, Pantoea, and Weissella were the dominant genera. Saccharomyces and Rhizopus were dominant among the 30 fungal genera. Correlation analysis showed that 102 microorganisms were involved in major flavor substance production during primary fermentation, Lactobacillus, Photobacterium, Hyphodontia, Aquicella, Erysipelothrix, Idiomarina, Paraphaeosphaeria, and Sulfuritalea were most associated with flavoring substances. Four bacteria, Lactobacillus (R1), Photobacterium (R2), Idiomarina (R3), and Pediococcus (R4), were isolated and identified from wheat Qu, which were added to wine Qu to prepare four kinds of fortified Qu (QR1, QR2, QR3, QR4). QR1 and QR2 fermentation can enhance the quality of Huangjiu. This work reveals the correlation between microorganisms and volatile flavor compounds and is beneficial for regulating the micro-ecosystem and flavor of the broomcorn millet Huangjiu.

RESUMO

Agrochemical science prioritizes the discovery and effective synthesis of innovative and promising lead compounds. Herein, we developed an efficient column chromatography-free synthesis for ß-carboline 1-hydrazides via a mild CuBr2-catalyzed oxidation and investigated the antifungal and antibacterial activities and mechanisms for these compounds. In our study, compounds 4de (EC50 = 0.23 µg·mL-1) and 4dq (EC50 = 0.11 µg·mL-1) displayed the best efficacy, demonstrating enhancements in inhibitory activity of more than 20-fold against Ggt compared to silthiopham (EC50 = 2.39 µg·mL-1). Additionally, compound 4de (EC50 = 0.21 µg·mL-1) demonstrated outstanding in vitro antifungal activities as well as in vivo curative activities against Fg. According to preliminary mechanistic studies, ß-carboline 1-hydrazides led to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, destruction of cell membranes, and dysregulation of histone acetylation. Furthermore, several substances exhibited antibacterial activity against Psg and Cms by preventing the development of bacterial biofilms.

RESUMO

Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination is of environmental and public health concerns due to its toxic components. Bioremediation utilizes microbial organisms to metabolism and remove these contaminants. The aim of this study was to enrich a microbial community and examine its potential to degrade petroleum hydrocarbon. Through successive enrichment, we obtained a bacterial consortium using crude oil as sole carbon source. The 16 S rRNA gene analysis illustrated the structural characteristics of this community. Metagenomic analysis revealed the specific microbial organisms involved in the degradation of cyclohexane and all the six BTEX components, with a demonstration of the versatile metabolic pathways involved in these reactions. Results showed that our consortium contained the full range of CDSs that could potentially degrade cyclohexane, benzene, toluene, and (o-, m-, p-) xylene completely. Interestingly, a single taxon that possessed all the genes involved in either the activation or the central intermediates degrading pathway was not detected, except for the Novosphingobium which contained all the genes involved in the upper degradation pathway of benzene, indicating the synergistic interactions between different bacterial genera during the hydrocarbon degradation.

RESUMO

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder has increasingly been conceptualized as a disorder of abnormal brain connectivity. However, far less is known about the structural covariance in different subtypes of this disorder and how those differences may contribute to the symptomology of these subtypes. In this study, we used a combined volumetric-based methodology and structural covariance approach to investigate structural covariance of subcortical brain volume in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-combined and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-inattentive patients. In addition, a linear support vector machine was used to predict patient's attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms. Results showed that compared with TD children, those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-combined exhibited decreased volume of both the left and right pallidum. Moreover, we found increased right hippocampal volume in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-inattentive children. Furthermore and when compared with the TD group, both attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-combined and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-inattentive groups showed greater nonhomologous inter-regional correlations. The abnormal structural covariance network in the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-combined group was located in the left amygdala-left putamen/left pallidum/right pallidum and right pallidum-left pallidum; in the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-inattentive group, this difference was noted in the left hippocampus-left amygdala/left putamen/right putamen and right hippocampus-left amygdala. Additionally, different combinations of abnormalities in subcortical structural covariance were predictive of symptom severity in different attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder subtypes. Collectively, our findings demonstrated that structural covariance provided valuable diagnostic markers for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder subtypes.
