RESUMO

The global demand for poly-grade ethylene (C2H4) is increasing annually. However, the energy-saving purification of this gas remains a major challenge due to the similarity in molecular properties among the ternary C2 hydrocarbons. To address this challenge, we report an approach of systematic tuning of the pore environment with organic sites (from -COOH to -CF3, then to -CH3) in porous coordination polymers (PCPs), of which NTU-73-CH3 shows remarkable capability for the direct production of poly-grade C2H4 from ternary C2 hydrocarbons under ambient conditions. In comparison, the precursor structure of NTU-73-COOH is unable to purify C2H4, while NTU-73-CF3 shows minimal ability to harvest C2H4. This is because the changed binding sites in the NTU-73-series not only eliminate the channel obstruction caused by the formation of gas clusters, but also enhance the interaction with acetylene (C2H2) and ethane (C2H6), as validated by in situ crystallographic and Raman analysis. Our findings, in particular the systematic tuning of the pore environment and the efficient C2H4 purification by NTU-73-CH3, provide a blueprint for the creation of advanced porous families that can handle desired tasks.

RESUMO

Ofloxacin (OFL) is a commonly used antibiotic that can enter wastewater treatment plants and be adsorbed by the sludge, resulting in a high OFL concentration in sludge and affecting the subsequent sludge anaerobic digestion process. However, the micro mechanisms involved in this process have not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, this study focuses on the effect of OFL on the sludge anaerobic digestion of sludge to provide such support. The experimental results showed that the maximal methane yield decreased from 277.7 to 164.7 mL/g VSS with the OFL concentration increased from 0 to 300 mg/L. Additionally, OFL hindered the intermediate biochemical processes of hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and acetoclastic methanogenesis. However, it promoted hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis process, using H2 as substrate, with the concentration of 300 mg/L OFL was 5.54 fold methane production of that in the control. Further investigation revealed that the negative effect of OFL was likely due to the induction of reactive oxygen species, which led to a decrease in cell activity and interference with the activity of key enzymes. Microbiological analysis revealed that OFL reduced the relative abundance of hydrolysis and acidogenesis bacteria, and Methanosaeta archaea, while increasing the relative abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis microorganism from 36.54% to 51.48% as the OFL concentration increase from 0 to 300 mg/L.

RESUMO

Metal-organic cages (MOCs) are an emerging class of porous materials with promising applications. However, controlling the configuration of the cage packing, which can influence the overall porosity of the materials, remains a difficulty, as many factors can influence the cage assembly and stacking. Herein, we report a solvent strategy to fine-tune the packing configuration of a bilayer MOC, a small triangular prism cage (six Cu ions act as vertices, three nitrate ions act as pillars, and six nitrate ions act as caps) incorporated into a large triangular prism cage (another six Cu ions act as vertices, a couple of oxygen atoms act as pillars and six ligands (L1: 3,5-bis(pyridine-3-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole) act as a jointed cap) by the coordination between the triazole nitrogen from L1 and the inner vertex Cu ions. The involved solvents water, acetonitrile (MeCN) and N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) form hydrogen bonds with this bilayer MOC, resulting in three different types of packing associated with systemically tuned porosity (NTU-93: 12.2%, NTU-94: 19.3%, and NTU-95: 42.1%). Gas adsorption and breakthrough tests demonstrate that NTU-95 has potential ability for C2H2/C2H4 separation. This work not only shows a case of finely tuned packing of coordination cages, but also provides a powerful tool that may be extended to other cage families.

RESUMO

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have become an effective tool for tumor treatment. The combination of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) takes advantage of various ROS and enhances therapeutic effects. However, the activation of CDT usually occurs before PDT, which hinders the sustained maintenance of hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) and reduces the treatment efficiency. Herein, we present a light-triggered nano-system based on molecular aggregation regulation for converting cancer therapy from PDT/photothermal therapy (PTT) to a long-lasting CDT. The ordered J-aggregation enhances the photodynamic properties of the cyanine moiety while simultaneously suppressing the chemodynamic capabilities of the copper-porphyrin moiety. Upon light irradiation, Cu-PCy JNPs demonstrate strong photodynamic and photothermal effects. Meanwhile, light triggers a rapid degradation of the cyanine backbone, leading to the destruction of the J-aggregation. As a result, a long-lasting CDT is sequentially activated, and the sustained generation of ⋅OH is observed for up to 48 hours, causing potent cellular oxidative stress and apoptosis. Due to their excellent tumor accumulation, Cu-PCy JNPs exhibit effective in vivo tumor ablation through the converting therapy. This work provides a new approach for effectively prolonging the chemodynamic activity in ROS-based cancer therapy.

RESUMO

Background: The epidemiology and severity of asthma vary by sex and age. The diagnosis, treatment, and management of asthma in female patients are quite challenging. However, there is hitherto no comprehensive and standardized guidance for female patients with asthma. Methods: Corresponding search strategies were determined based on clinical concerns regarding female asthma. Search terms included "sex hormones and lung development", "sex hormone changes and asthma", "hormones and asthma immune response", "women, asthma", "children, asthma", "puberty, asthma", "menstruation, asthma", "pregnancy, asthma", "lactation, asthma", "menopause, asthma", "obesity, asthma", and "women, refractory, severe asthma". Literature was retrieved from PubMed/Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, China Biology Medicine disc, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data with the search date of July 30, 2022 as the last day. This consensus used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation to evaluate the strength of recommendation and quality of evidence. Results: We collected basic research results and clinical evidence-based medical data and reviewed the effects of sex hormones, classical genetics, and epigenetics on the clinical presentation and treatment response of female patients with asthma under different environmental effects. Based on that, we formulated this expert consensus on the management of female asthma throughout the life cycle. Conclusions: This expert consensus on the management of asthma in women throughout the life cycle provides diagnosis, treatment, and research reference for clinical and basic medical practitioners.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Multiple rib fractures can lead to flail chest with up to 35% mortality rate due to severe pulmonary complications. Current treatments of flail chest remain controversial. Studies have shown that surgical treatments can improve outcomes and reduce mortality, comparing to non-operative treatments. Current surgical fixation methods focus on stabilization of ribs on the outward facing side, and they require division of intercostal muscles. Damages to surrounding nerves and vessels may lead to chronic pain. This study tests a novel interior fixation method that minimizes neurovascular injuries. METHODS: Twelve healthy canines were divided in two surgical operation groups for exterior and interior fixation using titanium metal plates. Osteotomy with oblique fractures was prepared under general anesthesia. Exterior fixation was performed in open surgery. Interior fixation was minimally invasive using custom made tools including a flexible shaft extension screwdriver, solid plate stand, guiding wire loop and metal plates with threaded holes. RESULTS: Respiratory and cardiovascular functions (RR, PO2, PCO2, SpO2, and HR) together with body temperature were measured before anesthesia and within 48 h after surgery. The difference in measurements was not statistically significant between the two groups before surgery with P values greater than 0.05. However, the interior group canines had better RR and PO2 values starting from the 24th hour, and better PCO2, SpO2, and HR values starting from the 48th hour. It took longer operation time to complete the minimally invasive interior fixation surgery (P value less than 0.001), but the total blood loss was less than the exterior fixation group (P value less than 0.001). Results also showed that interior group canines suffered less pain, and they had quicker recovery in gastrointestinal and physical mobility. CONCLUSIONS: The investigative interior fixation method was safe and effective in rib stabilization on a canine rib fracture model, comparing to the exterior fixation method. The interior fixation was minimally invasive, with less damages to tissues and nerves surrounding the ribs, leading to better postoperative outcomes.

RESUMO

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have been considered as one of the most emerging systems for energy conversion and storage. However, the preparation of highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts on an air cathode is still faced with significant challenges. Herein, we report a secondary nitrogen source strategy for fine-tuning the active center, which provides a carbon-based hierarchical porous catalyst (termed Co3O4@N/CNT-1000) for highly efficient ORR activity (E1/2 = 0.87 V, JL = 5.32 mA cm-2, and Eonset = 1.021 V) and excellent stability. Controlled experiments demonstrate that such high activity derives from the synergistic effect of cobalt tetroxide and bamboo-shaped carbon nanotubes doped with nitrogen, prepared by the pyrolysis of a two-dimensional metal-organic framework nanosheet (termed NTU-70) and melamine. Furthermore, the ZAB assembled with Co3O4@N/CNT-1000 displays high specific capacity (854 mA h g-1Zn) and power density (179 mW cm-2), excellent long-term cycling (330 h), and durable charging/discharging ability.

RESUMO

Palladium (Pd) nanocrystals with different crystalline forms exhibit distinct enzyme-like activities in generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). How such crystallinity-dependent catalytic activity regulates potential cytotoxicity remains to be elucidated. In the present work, Pd nanocrystals with four different crystalline forms were synthesized, and the underlying mechanisms involved in ROS-mediated cytotoxicity were systematically revealed. Pd nanocrystals with the {100} (nanocubes) and {111} (nanooctahedrons and nanotetrahedrons) facets triggered cytotoxicity by generating singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radicals (OH˙), respectively. Meanwhile, Pd nanoconcave-tetrahedrons, which had both the {110} and {111} facets, induced ROS-mediated cytotoxicity via activating the superoxide (O2˙-) pathway. Consumption of protons and generation of hydroxide during intracellular ROS conversion resulted in pH alkalization, eventually leading to cell death. Our findings emphasize the importance of facet-dependent ROS generation promoted by Pd nanocrystals. Furthermore, alkalization is identified as a new biomarker for analyzing ROS-mediated cytotoxicity.

RESUMO

The probability of occupational exposure rises with the increasing production and biomedical application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Thus, the risk of co-exposure of nanomaterials with environmental pollutants is also increasing. Although many studies have focused on the combined toxicity of nanomaterials and pollutants, more attention has been paid to the toxicity of nanomaterials after adsorbing pollutants or the toxicity of nanomaterials and pollutants exposed simultaneously. Few studies have been conducted on the toxicity and toxicity mechanisms of nanomaterials and environmental pollutants following sequential exposure. In this study, we employed THP-1 cells to investigate how pristine single walled CNTs (p-SWCNTs) and oxidized single walled CNTs (SWCNT-COOHs) pretreatments at a non-lethal dose of 10 µg/mL affect cell responses to metal ions (i. e., Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cr(VI)). We found that p-SWCNTs caused more significant damage to cell membrane integrity than SWCNT-COOHs, which led to higher metallothionein (MT) levels and increased transport of metal ions into cells. Pretreatment of p-SWCNTs in cells significantly increased the cytotoxicity of Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cr(VI) by 2-4-fold, whereas SWCNT-COOHs pretreated cells showed no noteworthy changes in response to heavy metals, which were further confirmed by the cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) assays. These findings indicate that understanding the effects of the exposure sequence of engineered nanomaterials and environmental pollutants on their toxicity provides an excellent complement to combined toxicity evaluation.

RESUMO

The treatment and disposal of sludge is a complex environmental problem because of the high moisture content. Herein, We reported the process of Fe(II) activating Urea hydrogen peroxide (UHP) to improve waste activated sludge (WAS) dewaterability for the first time. Fe(II)/UHP was proven to significantly improve WAS dewaterability. Specifically, under the optimal conditions with 60/35-Fe(II)/UHP mg/g TSS, the CST, SRF, and WCSC of WAS reduced from 215.3 ± 7.5s, 9.2 ± 0.32 (× 1012 m/kg), and 92.2 ± 0.7% (control) to 62.3 ± 4.3s, 2.8 ± 0.09 (× 1012m/kg), and 70.4 ± 0.4%, respectively. Further analysis revealed that •OH was generated in the Fe(II)/UHP system and played the dominant role in enhancing WAS dewaterability. •OH was found to attack extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and cells, causing EPSs fragmentation and decomposition part of EPSs into micro-molecule organics or even inorganics, and leading to cell destruction, thus liberating the EPSs-bound and cells-bound water. •OH also degraded the protein in centrifugal liquor (CL) into micro-molecule organics such as amino acids, which could reduce the viscosity and electronegativity of CL. The above facts ultimately reduced solid-liquid interface interaction but increased hydrophobicity, flocculation, and flowability of WAS. Meanwhile, the broken WAS flocs were then re-flocculated via adsorption bridging and charge neutralization induced by Fe(II) and Fe(III). Moreover, Fe(II)/UHP treatment achieved the reduction and stabilization of heavy metals of dewatered sludge, which further enabled its land application. Finally, the Fe(II)/UHP process was found to be more attractive than the Fe(II)/persulfate, classical Fenton processes, and cPAM in terms of cost savings and practical implementation.

RESUMO

Photothermal therapy has been developed as one of the most attractive strategies for tumour therapy. However, most of the reported photothermal probes still suffer from poor selectivity or specificity for the tumour region during treatment. Herein, a tumour acidic microenvironment activated heptamethine cyanine-based nanoprobe (Cy-TPA NPs) is constructed for fluorescence imaging-guided photothermal therapy with enhanced tumour specificity. Taking advantage of the pH-dependent molecular rearrangement, Cy-TPA NPs under weak acidic conditions exhibit enhanced near-infrared absorption and "turn on" fluorescence and photothermal performance. The "turn on" fluorescence signal in tumour tissues can improve the signal-to-background ratio, providing precise in vivo fluorescence imaging. Moreover, tumour-specific PTT can effectively ablate tumours with reduced damage to the surrounding tissue. Thus, our work presents a promising strategy for significantly improving the precision and specificity of tumour imaging and therapy.

RESUMO

Producing methane from anaerobic co-digestion of kitchen waste and waste activated sludge has been widely implemented in real-world situations. However, the fate and impact of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a main active component in cruciferous vegetables, in the anaerobic co-digestion has never been documented. This study therefore aims to provide such supports. Experimental results exhibited that AITC was degraded completely by microorganisms and served as a substrate to produce methane. As AITC increased from 0 to 60 mg/L, the maximum methane production decreased from 285.1 to 35.8 mL/g VS, and the optimum digestion time was also prolonged. The mechanism study demonstrated that AITC induced cell apoptosis by modifying the physicochemical properties of cell membrane, which resulted in inhibitions to the procedure of anaerobic co-digestion. The high-throughput sequencing showed that AITC enriched the microorganism for degradation of complex organic compounds such as Bacillus, but lessened anaerobes involved in hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and methanogenesis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Observational studies link elevated homocysteine concentrations (Hcy) with female fertility, pregnancy loss, and low offspring birthweight. Maternal rs1801133, a functional variant in MTHFR strongly associated with lifelong elevated Hcy, is associated with recurrent pregnancy loss and offspring birthweight in Asian women. We investigated if genetically elevated Hcy is associated with fertility, pregnancy loss, and offspring birthweight in European women. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study using publicly available data. We obtained 18 genetic variants (five involved in Hcy metabolism) explaining up to 5.9% of the variance in Hcy from a genome-wide association meta-analysis of 44,147 European individuals (82% women). We investigated fertility (including age at menopause), pregnancy loss, and offspring birthweight in the UK Biobank (N = 194,174), EGG (N = 190,406), and ReproGen (N = 69,360-252,514) consortia using summary statistics. We calculated inverse-variance weighted, and several sensitivity MR regression statistics. RESULTS: rs1801133 was associated with a 7.45 months (95% CI: 4.09, 10.80) increase in age at menopause and 29.69 (12.87, 46.51) g decrease in offspring birthweight per SD increase in Hcy in the UK biobank, and confirmed in EGG and ReproGen. MR for Hcy metabolism alone (five variants in MTHFR, MTR, CBS) showed similar results for offspring birthweight across consortia. However, using all 18 variants resulted in no association for any of the outcomes across consortia. CONCLUSION: Hcy and suggestively vitamin B variants are most likely the drug targets for folate supplementation in pregnant women on the offspring birthweight, while Hcy variants related to renal function or diabetes are not involved.

RESUMO

Poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and poly ferric sulfate (PFS) are widely used in wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering, resulting in their amounts being accumulated substantially in waste activated sludge (WAS). Till now, however, little information about their influence on WAS digestion is available. This work therefore aims to provide insights into how PAC and PFS affect sludge anaerobic digestion. The experimental results showed that PFS's inhibition to methane production was much severer than PAC, in control reactor (0 mg Al or Fe /g TSS), the maximum cumulative methane production was 152.99 ± 7.18 mL/g VSS, when flocculants concentration increased to 30 mg Al/g TSS or 30 mg Fe/g TSS, the yields decreased to 129.54 ± 6.18 mL/g VSS and 89.52 ± 4.82 mL/g VSS respectively. Mechanism explorations exhibited that protein in WAS could bond with flocculants, which would inhibit protein bioconversion. It was also observed that the apparent activation energy (AAE) of organic solubilisation of PAC and PFS-contained sludge were increased by 38.58% and 18.67% respectively. Meanwhile, compared to the PFS, PAC led to more serious suppression of hydrolysis and acidogenesis processes, with propionic acid used as substrate, PFS inhibit methanogenesis more severely than PAC. Illumina MiSeq sequencing analyses showed that the number of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) enriched obviously in PFS reactor. The results revealed that although PFS reduced methane production more severely than PAC, the reduction was mainly enforced by the activity of SRB but not organic enmeshment. Furthermore, PAC severely suppresses acetotrophic methanogens but PFS depress hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis microorganism mainly. Additionally, malodor control and dewaterability enhancement of digested sludge can be realized with PAC existence. The finding obtained in this study would provide insights into the PFS or PAC-involved sludge anaerobic digestion system and might support the important implication for further manipulate WAS treatment in the future.

RESUMO

Microplastic (MP) pollution causes global concerns regarding the consequential impacts on human health. In particular, MPs may act as vectors for various contaminants to induce adverse effects in human. In this work, the joint cytotoxicity of two different MPs co-exposed with diverse ionic pollutants was investigated in two cell lines from human digestive system: human gastric epithelium (GES-1) and colorectal mucosa (FHC) cell lines. The results indicated that the cytotoxicity of cationic pollutants was alleviated by MPs more significantly than that of anionic pollutants in both culture medium and river water. The electrostatic attraction between the negatively charged MPs and cations was a key factor in determining the ultimate joint toxicity. Our findings indicate that the joint cytotoxicity of MP-pollutant mixtures may be proactively reduced by modulating the surface charge of MPs.

RESUMO

Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), a typical surfactant being widely used in various applications, was highly accumulated in waste activated sludge. To date, however, its effect on hydrogen production from dark fermentation of sludge has not been documented. The work therefore aimed to explore whether and how SDBS affects hydrogen production. Experimental results showed that with an increase of SDBS from 0 to 30 mg/g TSS, the maximal hydrogen yield increased from 2.47 to 10.73 mL/g VSS (without any treatment) and from 13.05 to 23.51 mL/g VSS (under free ammonia pretreatment). Mechanism exploration showed that SDBS lowered surface tension, facilitated organics transfer from solid to liquid. SDBS also destroyed hydrogen bonding networks of protein, promoted macromolecular organics degradation. Besides, SDBS improved the electric charge in organics, then weakened the mutual repulsion, improved adsorb, interact and promoted the availability of reaction sites between anaerobes and organic substances. Enzyme activity analysis showed that SDBS not only improved the activities of enzymes related to hydrolysis and acidification processes, but also inhibited the activities of homoacetogens and methanogens. SDBS presence lowered sludge ORP and created an environment which was helpful to the growth of butyric-type bacteria, thus enhanced butyric-type fermentation, which contributed hydrogen production largely. Microbial community analysis revealed that SDBS existence affected distributions of microbial populations, and increased the abundances of hydrogen producing microorganisms (e.g., unclassified_f_Synergistaceae). PICRUSt2 analysis showed that SDBS reduced hydrogenotrophic methanogens activity for its inhibitory effect on the biotransformation of 5,10-Methenyl-THMPT to 5-methyl-THMPT.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women experience physical, physiological, and mental changes. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a relevant indicator of psychological and physical behaviours, changing over the course of pregnancy. This study aims to assess HRQoL of pregnant women during different stages of pregnancy. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed using the The EuroQoL Group's five-dimension five-level questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) to assess the HRQoL of pregnant women, and demographic data were collected. This study was conducted in a regional university hospital in Guangzhou, China. RESULTS: A total of 908 pregnant women were included in this study. Pregnant women in the early 2nd trimester had the highest HRQoL. The HRQoL of pregnant women rose from the 1st trimester to the early 2nd trimester, and dropped to the bottom at the late 3rd trimester due to some physical and mental changes. Reports of pain/discomfort problem were the most common (46.0%) while self-care were the least concern. More than 10% of pregnant women in the 1st trimester had health-related problems in at least one dimension of whole five dimensions. In the whole sample, the EuroQoL Group's visual analog scale (EQ-VAS) was 87.86 ± 9.16. Across the gestational stages, the HRQoL remained stable during the pregnancy but the highest value was observed in the 1st trimester (89.65 ± 10.13) while the lowest was in the late 3rd trimester (87.28 ± 9.13). CONCLUSIONS: During pregnancy, HRQoL were associated with gestational trimesters in a certain degree. HRQoL was the highest in the early 2nd trimester and then decreased to the lowest in the late 3rd trimester due to a series of physical and psychological changes. Therefore, obstetric doctors and medical institutions should give more attention and care to pregnant women in the late 3rd trimester.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) during pregnancy has been suggested to be associated with adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes; however, the findings have been inconsistent. We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to provide an overview of these associations. METHODS: The online databases PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science were searched comprehensively for eligible studies from inception to February 2021. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using random- or fixed-effects models, and dose-response meta-analyses were also conducted when possible. FINDINGS: A total of 29 studies (32,905 participants) were included. The pooled results demonstrated that perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) exposure during pregnancy was linearly associated with increased preterm birth risk (pooled OR per 1-ng/ml increase: 1.01, 95% CIs: 1.00-1.02, P = 0.009) and perfluorononanoate (PFNA) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) exposure showed inverted U-shaped associations with preterm birth risk (P values for the nonlinear trend: 0.025 and 0.030). Positive associations were also observed for exposure to perfluorodecanoate (PFDA) and miscarriage (pooled OR per 1-ng/ml increase: 1.87, 95% CIs: 1.15-3.03) and PFOS and preeclampsia (pooled OR per 1-log increase: 1.27, 95% CIs: 1.06-1.51), whereas exposure to perfluoroundecanoate (PFUnDA) was inversely associated with preeclampsia risk (pooled OR per 1-log increase: 0.81, 95% CIs: 0.71-0.93). Based on individual evidence, detrimental effects were observed between PFDA exposure and small for gestational age and between PFOA and PFOS and intrauterine growth restriction. No significant associations were found between pregnancy PFAS exposure and other adverse pregnancy outcomes (i.e., gestational diabetes mellitus, pregnancy-induced hypertension, low birth weight, and large and small for gestational age). INTERPRETATION: Our findings indicated that PFOS, PFOA and PFNA exposure during pregnancy might be associated with increased preterm birth risk and that PFAS exposure might be associated with the risk of miscarriage and preeclampsia. Due to the limited evidence obtained for most associations, additional studies are required to confirm these findings.

RESUMO

As the wide application of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs), as well as ubiquitous chromium (Cr(VI)) pollution in environment, the chance of human exposure to CNPs/ZnONPs and their Cr(VI) adducts is enhanced. We therefore investigated the impacts of nano-cell and nano-Cr(VI) interactions on nanoparticle-Cr(VI) combined cytotoxicity in human lung epithelial (A549) cells. Our results showed that nano-cell and nano-pollutant interactions were the key elements in NP-pollutant combined cytotoxicity, as determined by cell death, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. A strong adsorption of Cr(VI) on CNPs and reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) were confirmed, resulting in the reduced cytotoxicity of CNP-Cr(VI) adducts. In contrast, ZnONPs caused the destruction of cell membranes so that more ZnONP-Cr(VI) adducts could enter the cells. Meantime, more Cr contents could be released from ZnONP-Cr(VI) adducts once entering cells and locating in lysosomes than that from CNP-Cr(VI) adducts. These two reasons together caused the enhanced cytotoxicity of ZnONP-Cr(VI) adducts. These findings indicate that the in-depth investigations on the interaction mechanisms are crucial to comprehensively understand the combined cytotoxicity of different NPs and pollutants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With the increase of the number of smokers, tobacco exposure among pregnant women is becoming more and more common. Pregnant women exposed to first-hand smoke and second-hand smoke are susceptible to physiological and psychological health issues has been proved in previous studies. Nevertheless, there are no enough studies focus on the impact of third-hand smoke during pregnancy. This study aimed to assess and compare health-related quality of life for pregnant women with exposure to first-hand smoke, second-hand smoke, third-hand smoke and non-exposure to tobacco in mainland China. METHODS: National-based cross-sectional study is based on a questionnaire survey which collects information including demographics, smoking behaviors and self-evaluation. All questionnaires were delivered and collected from August to September 2019. EuroQol group's visual analog scale and EuroQoL Five-dimension Questionnaire were used to collect data in mainland China. RESULTS: Totally, 15,682 pregnant women were included in this study, among which non-exposure to smoke were 7564 (48.2%), exposed to first-hand smoke, second-hand smoke and third-hand smoke were 89 (0.6%), 2349 (15.0%), and 5680 (36.2%) respectively. Pregnant women without tobacco exposure had the highest EuroQol group's visual analog scale score (mean value = 85.4[SD = 14.0]), while those with first-hand smoke had the lowest score (mean value = 77.4[SD = 22.2]). Among all five dimensions of EuroQoL Five-dimension Questionnaire, there were significant differences of EQ-index among groups with different tobacco exposure in usual activity and anxiety or depression dimensions (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Third-hand smoke exposure had close relationship with low health-related quality of life in pregnant women. Moreover, second-hand smoke exposure significantly led more problems on mental dimension of pregnant women.
