The soil pH, water content, nutrients, and microbial community composition and diversity among one-year term (E1), short-term (E4), and long-term (E10) enclosures were analyzed for understanding the response of soil bacterial and fungal communities to long-term enclosure in degraded patches of alpine meadow in the source zone of the Yellow River, through determining the soil physicochemical properties and microbial diversity using high-throughput sequencing technology. The results showed that the E1 enclosure significantly decreased soil pH, whereas long-term and short-term enclosures increased soil pH. The long-term enclosure could significantly increase soil water content and total nitrogen content, and the short-term enclosure could significantly increase available phosphorus content. The long-term enclosure could significantly increase the bacterial Proteobacteria. The short-term enclosure could significantly increase the abundance of the bacteria Acidobacteriota. However, the abundance of the fungus Basidiomycota decreased in both long-term and short-term enclosures. With the extension of enclosure years, the Chao1 index and Shannon diversity index of bacteria showed an increasing trend, but there was no significant difference between long-term and short-term enclosures. The Chao1 index of fungi gradually increased, and the Shannon diversity index first increased and then decreased, but there was no significant difference between long-term and short-term enclosures. Redundancy analysis indicated that enclosure altered microbial community composition and structure mainly by changing soil pH and water content. Therefore, the E4 short-term enclosure could significantly improve the soil physicochemical properties and microbial diversity at the degraded patches of alpine meadow. The long-term enclosure is not necessary and will lead to the waste of grassland resources, reduction in biodiversity, and restriction of wildlife activities.

Background and aim: Health literacy levels are strongly associated with clinical outcomes and quality of life in patients with chronic diseases, and patients with limited health literacy often require more medical care and achieve poorer clinical outcomes. Among the large number of studies on health literacy, few studies have focused on the health literacy of people with systemic sclerosis (SSc), and there is no specific tool to measure health literacy in this group. Therefore, this study plans to develop a health literacy scale for patients with SSc. Methods: This study included 428 SSc patients from the outpatient and inpatient departments of the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, the first affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University and the first affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China. The formulation of the scale was completed by forming the concept of health literacy of SSc patients, establishing the item pool, screening items, and evaluating reliability and validity. Classical measurement theory was used to screen items, factor analysis was used to explore the construct validity of the scale, and Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to assess the internal consistency. Results: Our study population was predominantly middle-aged women, with a male to female ratio of 1:5.7 and a mean age of 51.57 ± 10.99. A SSc Health Literacy scale with 6 dimensions and 30 items was developed. The six dimensions are clinic ability, judgment/evaluation information ability, access to information ability, social support, treatment compliance and application information ability. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale is 0.960, retest reliability is 0.898, split-half reliability is 0.953, content validity is 0.983, which has good reliability and validity. Conclusion: The Systemic Sclerosis Health Literacy Scale may become a valid tool to evaluate the health literacy level of patients with SSc.

This study proposed nitrogen addition experiments to analyze the effects of exogenous nitrogen addition on soil fungal diversity in alpine meadow. All the experiments were performed in degraded alpine meadow with two different slopes (gentle slope and steep slope) in Guoluo Prefecture of the Sanjiangyuan Region, and the sequence and analysis of ITS of soil fungi were performed using MiSeq PE250 sequencing technology. Comparative analysis was carried out with three nitrogen addition levels on soil fungal diversity in degraded grassland with different slopes, which included low nitrogen (LN, 2 g·m-2), middle nitrogen (MN, 5 g·m-2), and high nitrogen (HN, 10 g·m-2). The results showed that:① the distribution groups of fungi in the soil were Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Mortierellomycota, and Glomomycota, and the dominant bacteria was Ascomycota. ② The dominant genera were Mortierella and Archaeorhizomyces, and there were no differences in response to different slopes and nitrogen addition levels. ③ A total of 95 genera (Gibberellum, Preussia, etc.) were identified and significantly differed between two different slopes (P<0.05). ④ Bacteria with a relative abundance less than 1% had significant differences in nitrogen addition at different levels on the same slope (P<0.05). 5 In addition, the analyses of α and ß diversities showed that soil fungal community structure was stable under different slopes and nitrogen addition levels. Exogenous nitrogen supplementation significantly improved the relative abundance of non-dominant fungal communities without destroying soil fungal community structure.

MiSeq sequencing technology was used to investigate the bacterial compositions and diversities of active patch, non-active patch, recovered patch, and healthy alpine meadows so as to understand the changes in soil bacterial community diversity during altitude change and alpine meadow degradation. The relationship between bacterial diversity and environmental factors was analyzed using redundancy analysis (RDA). The results showed that the dominant bacterial phyla in the soil included Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Acidobacteriota in the study areas. The dominant bacterial genera that were identified via the MiSeq were RB41, Sphingomonas, and Bradyrhizobium. The relative abundance of these genera decreased with altitude increase and increased with the restoration progress of degraded patches but was significantly lower than that in the alpine meadow (P<0.05). The abundance of functional bacteria related to carbon fixation in degraded patches was higher than that in the healthy alpine meadow. The bacterial Chao1 index and species number in different types of degraded patches were significantly higher than those in the alpine meadow (P<0.05). The results of the RDA suggest that biological soil crust coverage and total nitrogen were the main influencing factors on dominant bacterial phyla at the altitude of 4013 m. Biomass, total nitrogen, and pH had a great influence on the dominant bacterial phyla at the altitude of 4224 m. Biomass and total potassium significantly affected the distribution of bacterial genera at the altitude of 4013 m. Sedge coverage and available nitrogen were the main influencing factors on bacterial dominant genera at the altitude of 4224 m. Biological soil crusts and pH had a great influence on bacterial diversities. The bacterial influence factors varied greatly at different altitude areas. Therefore, we should not only pay attention to the effect of alpine meadow degradation but also consider the effect of altitude in the study of bacterial diversity changes.

The abiotic reaction products of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and nitrate radicals (•NO3) are nitro-, oxygen-, and hydroxyl-containing PAHs (NPAHs, OPAHs, and OHPAHs). Four methods of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), Fukui function (FF), dual descriptor (DD), and population of π electrons (PP-π) are selected to predict the chemical reactivity of PAHs attacked by •OH and •NO3 in this study. The predicted •OH-initiated and •NO3-initiated transformation products are compared with the main PAH transformation products (PAH-TPs) observed in the laboratory. The results indicate that PP-π and DD approaches fail to predict the transformation products of fused PAHs containing five-membered rings. By predicting the PAH-TPs of 13-14 out of the 15 parent PAHs accurately, HOMO and FF methods were shown to be suitable for predicting the transformation products formed from the abiotic reactions of fused PAHs with •OH and •NO3.

PURPOSE: It is unclear whether neuropathological structural changes in the peripheral nervous system and central nervous system can occur in the spared nerve injury model. In this study, we investigated the pathological changes in the nervous system in a model of neuropathic pain as well as the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) and pregabalin (PGB) administration as regards pain relief and tissue repair. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty adult male SD rats were equally and randomly divided into 4 groups: spared nerve injury group (SNI, n = 10), SNI with electroacupuncture group (EA, n = 10), SNI with pregabalin group (PGB, n =10) and sham-operated group (Sham, n=10). EA and PGB were given from postoperative day (POD) 14 to 36. EA (2 Hz and 100 Hz alternating frequencies, intensities ranging from 1-1.5-2 mA) was applied to the left "zusanli" (ST36) and "Yanglingquan" (GB34) acupoints for 30 minutes. The mechanical withdrawal thresholds (MWTs) were tested with von Frey filaments. Moreover, the organizational and structural alterations of the bilateral prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, sciatic nerves and the thoracic, lumbar spinal cords and dorsal root ganglions (DRGs) were examined via light and electron microscopy. RESULTS: MWTs of left hind paw demonstrated a remarkable decrease in the SNI model (P < 0.05). In the SNI model, ultrastructural changes including demyelination and damaged neurons were observed at all levels of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS). In addition, EA improved MWTs and restored the normal structure of neurons. However, the effect was not found in the PGB treatment group. CONCLUSION: Chronic pain can induce extensive damage to the central and peripheral nervous systems. Meanwhile, EA and PGB can both alleviate chronic pain syndromes in rats, but EA also restores the normal cellular structures, while PGB is associated with no improvement.

MiSeq sequencing technology was used to analyze the microbial community diversity of soil in alpine wetlands to understand the degradation processes and environmental factors in these areas. The results showed that the severity of soil degradation changed the species diversity of soil microorganisms at the level of OTUs, and grass patches contained more species than frozen-thawing patches. The soil fungi species of OTUs changed significantly. The diversity indexes of bacteria (between the frozen-thawing patches and the grass patches) were higher than that of fungi. The dominant microbial species were consistent among different degradation stages. The dominant species of bacteria and fungi were Proteobacteria and RB41, and Ascomycota and Mortierella, respectively. The abundance of dominant microorganisms was significantly between un-degraded and heavily degraded areas, except for RB41 (P<0.05). The dominant microorganisms in the grass patches were more sensitive than those in the frozen-thawing patches. It was found that the main factors affecting the microbial community structure of soil were water content, organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen, and sedge coverage. Microbial diversity may decrease in heavily degraded alpine wetlands. Thus, the frozen-thawing patches and sedge species should be first protected, and the supplements of soil water content, soil organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon, and nitrogen should be strengthened for alpine wetland restoration.

An 84-day laboratory incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different fertilizers (urea; manure), moisture conditions (60%, 75% and 90% water holding capacity) and temperatures (15, 25 and 35℃) on nitrogen mineralization. The experiment included 3 treatments:①CK, unfertilized control; ② Ur, adding urea at N 120 mg·kg-1; 3 UM, adding urea and manure (equal to adding N 120 mg·kg-1). Total inorganic nitrogen and soluble organic nitrogen (SON) were determined at different times throughout the experiment. The results showed that soil temperature and fertilization type had significant impacts on the net mineralization rates, cumulative mineralization, and the potentially mineralizable nitrogen (N0) (P<0.01). In addition, the soil net N mineralization rates and cumulative mineralization significantly (P<0.05) increased by 1.46-8.17 and 2.00-8.15 times, respectively, when fertilizers were added into soils. The soil net N mineralization rates and cumulative mineralization increased with the increase of temperature. Compared with CK treatment, Ur and UM treatments could significantly increase the content of soil soluble organic nitrogen(SON). There was a significant negative correlation between the content of SON and cumulative mineralization. It indicated that SON was involved in soil nitrogen mineralization as a non-negligible component. Increasing the temperature could significantly increase the mineralization rate and mineralization intensity of SON in soil, but the water content had no significant influence on the SON of the soils. Moreover, the authors found that fertilization treatment worked significantly in decreasing the Q10 value for soil N mineralization compared with CK treatment. Further, the Q10 value was significantly lowest in UM treatment(Q10=1.01). The results showed that the application of organic manure significantly reduced the sensitivity of the rate of nitrogen mineralization to temperature changes, which was beneficial in slowing down the release rate of mineral nitrogen under high temperatures and improving the nitrogen utilization efficiency of crops.

Toxoplasma gondii is an important food-borne zoonotic protozoan parasite, which can infect endothermic animals, including pigs. However, data on T. gondii in slaughter pigs in Shaanxi Province were still lacking. To detect the seroprevalence and analyze the risk factors of T. gondii infection in slaughter pigs in Shaanxi Province, Northwestern China, a total of 784 serum samples were collected from four administrative regions and detected by indirect hemagglutination test for T. gondii infection. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 19.9% (156/784) slaughter pigs. Moreover, the seropositive rate was different among rearing systems (31% in nonintensive pig farms and 6.7% in intensive pig farms), genders (19.8% in male and 20.0% in female), and regions (ranging from 6.7% in Shenmu to 38.2% in Zhouzhi). Rearing system and region were identified as risk factors for T. gondii infection. These results showed that T. gondii is highly prevalent in slaughter pigs in Shaanxi Province, and it could cause a serious risk to public health. This study provided fundamental information for the prevention and control of T. gondii infection in slaughter pigs in China.

Objective@#To investigate the relationship between gastrointestinal disorders (GID) and core symptoms or behavioral problems among the children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) .@*Method@#Totally 328 children with ASD and 202 normal controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study from August 2013 to October 2016. The information about the gastrointestinal disorders, behavioral and emotional problems was collected by using questionnaires. Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) were used to assess the core symptoms of the children with ASD. Neurodevelopmental status was evaluated with Gesell Developmental Scale (GDS). These variables were analyzed by using student's t-test and chi-square test.@*Result@#The prevalence of GID was significantly higher in the children with ASD than in the normally developing children (49.4% (162/328) vs.25.7% (52/202), χ2=29.039, P=0.000), especially the symptoms of constipation (33.2% (109/328) vs. 13.9% (28/202)), diarrhea (9.5%(31/328) vs. 1.5% (3/202)), nausea and vomiting (9.5% (31/328) vs. 3.5% (7/202)), and foul defecation (16.5% (54/328) vs. 5.0% (10/202)) (all P<0.05). Among the ASD children, the prevalence of GID was similar between male and female (46.7% (133/285) vs. 46.5%(20/43), χ2=0.006, P=0.938), as well as among all age groups (χ2=1.907, P=0.862). There was no significant difference in scores of GDS in the ASD children with or without GID (all P>0.05). Compared with ASD children without GID (n=166), the ASD children with GID (n=162) got higher scores in the "Body and Object Use" of ABC scale ( (16.4±9.3) vs. (12.3±6.7) scores, t=2.258, P=0.028), and had more emotional problems (63.6% (103/162) vs. 49.4% (82/166), χ2=6.707, P=0.010). Moreover, the score of behavior problems questionnaire was higher in the ASD children with GID ( (35.3±16.8) vs. (16.1±13.6) scores, t=5.748, P=0.000).@*Conclusion@#Children with ASD have higher risk of GID than the normal developing children. While the stereotyped behaviors, problem behaviors and emotional problems are severer in the ASD children with GID. Hence, it is important to provide comprehensive treatment and management for these groups of children.

Objective To study the characteristics and mechanism of mine blast injury that wading in shoal of different depths through an animal model.Methods Ninety-six healthy adult New Zealand white rabbits weighing 2.19 ± 0.12kg were randomly divided into land group (n=16),limb wading group (n=16,the water depth reaching up the middle of the thighs of rabbits),and chest wading group (n=16,the water depth reaching up the thoracic xiphoid),stress test group (n=30),fake injury group (n=18).Punctiform burster was used to simulate landmine.Electric ignited the simulated mine away,causing landmine explosion injury to rabbits' one-sided hind limbs in upright state.High-speed photography was used to observe the movement of water accompanying the simulated mine explosion.Arterial blood serum markers of myocardial injury (CK-MB,cTnⅠ) and nerve injury (MBP,NSE) were detected before injury,and 3,6 and 12h after injury,and echocardiography,electrocardiography,CT,DSA and other examinations were implemented at the same time.Survival animals were killed 12h after injury for anatomy to record their injuries to the limbs and distant organs.The histopathological examination was done to define the injury characteristics furthen Results Feet and distal tibia were broken,and closed femoral fractures and arterial damage were often found away from the stump in limb wading group.This type of injury was different from the mop-like tearing tissue in the land group.Chest,abdominal organs and the brain,spinal cord injury in wading group were more severe than those in land group.There were higher incidences of chest,abdominal organs and spinal cord injury in chest wading Group.Conclusion The energy transfer of underwater explosion is affected by water depth and limbs or trunk mutually,which is an important mechanism of the complex and serious injuries in the wading group.The wading depth is an important factor affecting severity of the injury.Based on characteristics and unique mechanism of wading explosion,emergency treatment and the principle of early treatment for injury warrant further explored.

A bacterial isolate, TZ-1, was isolated from contaminated sediment near electronic waste dismantling workshops, Taizhou, China that degraded 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47). The isolate was identified as Pseudomonas putida sp. with respect to its morphology, biochemical characteristics and 16SrDNA sequence analysis. TZ-1 can use BDE-47 as the sole carbon and energy source for growth in mineral salt medium. The isolate degraded BDE-47 up to 49.96 % of the initially applied concentration of 50 µg L(-1) after 7 days of incubation at 150 rpm, 30°C. Static conditions with pH 6.5 and temperature 30°C were considered to be optimum for BDE-47 biodegradation. Addition of co-substrates promoted cell growth, but decreased the degradation rate for BDE-47.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the operative treatment for first-treated patients with malignant ovarian germ cell tumors who need preservation of fertility. METHODS: The clinical data of 105 patients who were treated with fertility-sparing surgery in 11 hospitals from 1992 to 2010 were collected to evaluate the outcomes of different primary surgical operative procedures. All 105 cases were performed the surgeries that preserved fertility and divided into three groups according to the surgical approaches, comprehensive staging surgery group: 47 cases (44.8%) received comprehensive staging surgeries that including the ipsilateral oophorectomy + omentectomy + retropertoneal lymph node dissection ± appendectomy + multiple biopsies;oophorectomy group:45 cases (42.9%)received ipsilateral oophorectomy ± biopsy of contralateral ovary ± omentectomy;tumor resection group:13 cases (12.4%) received enucleation of the mass with preservation of the ovary. Differences were compared among the three groups of patients in the surgery-related indicators, complications, fertility and prognosis. RESULTS: (1) Surgery-related indicators:the average blood loss of the comprehensive staging surgery group, the oophorectomy group and the tumor resection group were 496, 104 and 253 ml, the mean operation time were 176, 114 and 122 minutes, respectively, and there were significant differences among three groups (P = 0.011, P = 0.000). (2) Complication:the surgical complication rates of the three groups were 17% (8/47), 0 and 1/13, with significant differences (P = 0.015). (3) Reproductive function status: the pregnancy rate and birth rate of the three groups were no significant differences (9/19 vs. 7/19 vs. 2/3, P = 0.515; 8/19 vs. 5/19 vs. 2/3, P = 0.636). (4) PROGNOSIS: the recurrence rate of the three groups were significant differences [13% (6/47) vs. 0 vs. 2/13, P = 0.013], but the death rate with no significant differences [6% (3/47) vs. 0 vs. 0, P = 0.129]; The five-year survival rate of three different groups were 89%, 100% and 100% (P > 0.05), while disease free survival rate were 85%, 100% and 83% (P < 0.05), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with comprehensive staging surgery, oophorectomy group have higher surgical security and satisfactory prognosis, considerable pregnancy rates and birth rate. The tumor resection security may be reliable, but the prognosis is poor.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of cytomorphologic and immunocytochemical approaches in the diagnosis of hematologic neoplasms in serous effusion. METHODS: The cytospin and Thinprep smears of effusion specimens were prepared from 23 cases of lymphoid malignancies with histological confirmation and 30 cases of benign effusions used as control. Morphological assessment of the cellular components was conducted, including the ratio of mesothelium to lymphocyte, karyomorphism of lymphoid cell and the presence of apoptosis and mitosis. Immunocytochemical study was performed in all the cases, with flow cytometry in one case. RESULTS: Among the 23 tumor cases, 14 represented disease relapse, and in the remaining nine cases, the serous effusion was the primary manifestation. The proportion of mesothelium was low in the tumor group, being less than 10% in 20 cases (87.0%, 20/23). It was more than 10% in most of benign cases (20/30, 66.7%). Lymphoid cells were prominent (> 80% cells) in 69.6% of the tumor cases, and the cellular component in some control cases (63.3%, 19/30) showed fewer lymphocytes. Nipple-like projection of lymphocytic nuclei could be detected in almost all the tumor cases (91.3%, 21/23), but was occasionally found in the control group (26.7%, 8/30). Apoptosis and mitosis were obvious in lymphomatous effusion, but observed in only 6.7% of the control cases. Significant difference of the previously mentioned cytomorphologic features existed between the tumor and control groups (P < 0.01). The results of immunocytochemical staining in cell block were identical to the corresponding immunohistochemistry, and one case of mantle cell lymphoma was confirmed by flow cytometry. The cytologic findings seen in all the 23 studied cases were in agreement with the corresponding histologic diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Some cytomorphologic features, including decreased number of mesothelium, increased number of lymphoid cells, nuclear nipple-like projection, and the presence of apoptosis and mitosis, are very useful for diagnosing lymphoid malignancy in serous effusion. Immunocytochemistry is an important approach to the cytodiagnosis and classification of lymphoma.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the value of cytomorphologic and immunocytochemical approaches in the diagnosis of hematologic neoplasms in serous effusion.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The cytospin and Thinprep smears of effusion specimens were prepared from 23 cases of lymphoid malignancies with histological confirmation and 30 cases of benign effusions used as control. <p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To discuss the clinical effectiveness in treating thoracolumbar fractures adopting the rehabilitation exercise utilizing knee pads on the orthopedic traction bed.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From June 1996 to June 2006, we studied the clinical effectiveness of thoracolumbar fractures utilizing knee pads on the orthopedic traction bed for rehabilitation exercise. The cases surveyed total 209, 163 of which had full data. There were 98 males and 65 females with the age from 17 to 74 years (mean, 14.5 years). Consulting time after injury from 30 min to 7 days. Fracture site in T11 had 8 cases, in T12 24 cases, in L1 73 cases, in L2 33 cases, in L3 8 cases, in L4 3 cases, in T12 and L1 14 cases. Compression degree of vertebral anterior border: full compression had 1 case,more than 4/5 had 23, more than 2/3 had 67, more than 1/2 had 40, in 1/3 had 46.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Among them, 8 cases with legs paresis no recovery in nerval function or stopping recovery changed methods, and underwent surgical treatment. Others 155 cases were followed up from 2 to 12 years with an average of 3 years and 4 months. The average height of vertebral anterior borders of the 169 injured compressed had increased from 1.55 cm before treatment to 2.70 cm after treatment with an average of 1.15 cm. The height of the injured vertebral anterior borders had recovered from 50.5% (1.55/3.07) before treatment to 89.4% (2.70/3.02) after treatment. Kyphosis angle of the injured vertebral bodies had recovered from 13.25 degrees to -1.6 degrees in average. Twenty-three cases associated with dislocation basic reduction.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Rehabilitation exercise using knee pads on the orthopedic traction bed can obtain satisfactory clinical effect in treating thoracolumbar fractures, the method is easy. At 3, 7, 10 days after treatment, the height of bed should be adjusted according X-ray.</p>

OBJECTIVE: To identify the potential neoplastic risk in gonadal development abnormality with Y chromosome. METHODS: Inquiries about the illness history were made. Lymphocyte chromosomal karyotype of peripheral blood was analyzed. Sex determining region Y gene and relative steroids and enzymes were detected. Gonadal site was examined through medical imaging. Gonadal excision was performed by laparotomy or laparoscopy. Pathological examinations were done on all of the specimens. RESULTS: Among 41 cases of androgen insensitive syndrome, spermatogenic cell neoplasm occurred in 1 patient, sertoli cell tumor in 2, and interstitial cell hyperplasia in 5. Among 14 cases of 17 alpha-hydroxylase deficiency (XY) syndrome, one was sertoli cell tumor, and one was sertoli cell hyperplasia. In 4 cases of XY pure gonadal dysgenesis, one was gonadoblastoma with dysgerminoma. One of 16 cases of XO/XY gonadal dysgenesis was spermatogenic cell neoplasm with agenda cell tumor. Four cases of testes degeneration were all with dysgenetic testes. All of the gonadoblastoma and germ-cell tumor were located in the pelvis. Tumors occurred mostly during 15 years of age to 32 years. CONCLUSIONS: The gonads of XY pure gonadal dysgenesis has high risks of gonadoblastoma and germ-cell tumor. The older the onset age after puberty, the higher the malignancy risk is. Once diagnosed, bilateral gonads should be excised as soon as possible.

Volatilization behavior of benzene, toluene, ethylb-enzene and xylene (BTEX) behaves complicatedly with different characteristics of the underlying materials. For the need to control and take precautions against volatile organic compounds (VOCs) leak and pollution, and consider the diversification of underlying materials in the area of petroleum works, the test was carried out to study the volatilization behavior of BTEX on three kinds of typical underlying materials in Zibo, Shandong, China. The studies include volatilization dynamic curves of BTEX compounds and mixture and the optimized simulation formulas for them in the base of volatilization kinetics model. The results indicated that, under the same condition, volatility speed of BTEX compounds and mixture was Benzene > Toluene > BTEX > Dimethyl-benzene > Ethylbenzene, and for the three underlying materials, the order of volatility speed was water, sand and soil in sequence. The volatility coefficient linear positive correlated with the vapor pressure, the volatility coefficient remarkably increased with the vapor pressure of BTEX compounds on all the three underlying materials. The mechanism of underlying materials acted on volatilization of BTEX were mainly shown as increasing volatility area and influence the available original (amount) of pore in the course of volatilization and spread.

A series of batch experiments were performed using mixed bacterial consortia to investigate biodegradation performance of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and three xylene isomers (BTEX) under nitrate, sulfate and ferric iron reducing conditions. The results showed that toluene, ethylbenzene, m-xylene and o-xylene could be degraded independently by the mixed cultures coupled to nitrate, sulfate and ferric iron reduction. Under ferric iron reducing conditions the biodegradation of benzene and p-xylene could be occurred only in the presence of other alkylbenzenes. Alkylbenzenes can serve as the primary substrates to stimulate the transformation of benzene and p-xylene under anaerobic conditions. Benzene and p-xylene are more toxic than toluene and ethylbenzene, under the three terminal electron acceptors conditions, the degradation rates decreased with toluene > ethylbenzene > m-xylene > o-xylene > benzene > p-xylene. Nitrate was a more favorable electron acceptor compared to sulfate and ferric iron. The ratio between sulfate consumed and the loss of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene was 4.44, 4.51, 4.42, 4.32, 4.37 and 4.23, respectively; the ratio between nitrate consumed and the loss of these substrates was 7.53, 6.24, 6.49, 7.28, 7.81, 7.61, respectively; the ratio between the consumption of ferric iron and the loss of toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene was 17.99, 18.04, 18.07, 17.97, respectively.
