RESUMO

Leptin is a hormone secreted primarily by adipose tissue. It regulates an organism's metabolism, energy balance, and body weight through a negative feedback mechanism. When a person or animal has low body fat and little energy, the leptin level in the body decreases, and conversely, when there is an excess of nutrients, the leptin level increases, giving a feeling of satiety. However, when leptin levels are abnormal (too high or too low) for a number of reasons, it can negatively affect your health, inducing inflammatory responses, obesity, and other problems. Many studies have shown that abnormal leptin levels, such as hyperleptinemia, are closely associated with common risk factors for atherosclerosis (AS). This review systematically states the relationship between leptin and common risk factors for AS (inflammation, obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and sleep disorders) and provides some new thoughts on the future direction of research on both. Because the abnormal level of leptin will have adverse effects on multiple atherosclerotic risk factors, how to regulate the leptin level of patients with AS, and whether we can treat and prevent AS by intervening the leptin level, these may be our new research directions in the future.

RESUMO

Orexin, also known as hypocretin, is an excitatory neuropeptide secreted by the hypothalamus. Orexin is divided into orexin-A (OXA) and orexin-B (OXB), which are derived from a common precursor secreted by hypothalamic neurons. Orexin acts on orexin receptor-1 (OX1R) and orexin receptor-2 (OX2R). Orexin neurons, as well as receptors, are widely distributed in various regions of the brain as well as in the peripheral system and have a wider range of functions. This paper reviews the latest research results of orexin in the aspects of food intake, sleep, addiction, depression and anxiety. Because orexin has certain physiological functions in many systems, we further explored the possibility of orexin as a new target for the treatment of bulimia, anorexia nervosa, insomnia, lethargy, anxiety and depression. It is precisely because orexin has physiological functions in multiple systems that orexin, as a new target for the treatment of the above diseases, has potential contradictions. For example, it promotes the function of 1 system and may inhibit the function of another system. How to study a new drug, which can not only treat the diseases of this system, but also do not affect other system functions, is what we need to focus on.

RESUMO

System pH is found to crucially affect biofilm growth and microorganisms' activity in the biofilm-based wastewater treatment system. This study investigated the pH-dependent pollutants removal, microbial niches succession and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) accumulation in an oxygen-based membrane biofilm reactor treating greywater. Results indicated that neutral conditions achieved the highest biofilm concentration and living cells, which enabled the highest pollutants removal rates; multifarious functional groups in biofilm enabled pollutants adsorption, which favored its continuous bio-removal. Microbial communities under acidic condition (pH = 5.0) were significantly different with that under other conditions (p < 0.05). The neutral and alkaline niches (pH = 7.0 and 9.0) were predominant by organics biodegradation and nitrogen reduction bacteria (e.g. Sphingobacteriales, Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium and Phenylobacterium), but which were significantly dropped under acidic conditions, leading to the declined reactor performance. ARGs in biofilm (predominant by korB, intI-1, sul1 and sul2) were much higher than that in the cell-free liquid and the target ARGs accumulation (korB, intI-1, blaCTX-M, qnrS) had nearly linear positive relationships (R2 > 0.95, P < 0.01) with biofilm-attached linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS). LAS stimulate ARGs proliferation in functional microorganisms (korB, sul-1 and intI-1 were significantly associated with related microbial genus) and biofilm played a key role in ARGs dissemination. The relatively low ARGs in both biofilm and effluent under neutral conditions suggested that pH controlling can be an effective strategy to inhibit ARGs dissemination and proliferation in the system.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Lycium barbarum L. are widely used as medicinal and functional food and may be particularly beneficial for patients with dyslipidemia. This systematic review protocol is designed to be used to evaluate the effects of Lycium barbarum L. on plasma lipid concentration through systematic reviews and meta-analysis. METHODS: The Following electronic databases will be searched from inception to October 2021: the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Wan-fang database. All randomized controlled trial designs evaluated the effects of Lycium barbarum L. on plasma concentrations of lipids will be included. Two researchers will operate literature retrieval, screening, information extraction, quality assessment, and data analysis independently. The analysis will be conducted using Rstudio software (Version 1.4.1717). RESULTS: The findings will be submitted to a peer-reviewed publication. CONCLUSION: This study will provide practical and targeted evidence in investigating the impact of Lycium barbarum L. on plasma lipid concentration in adults.
