RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya syndrome (MMS) is a group of diseases that involves more than one underlying disease and is accompanied by moyamoya vascular phenomena. Psoriasis is a chronic immune skin disease closely linked to high blood pressure and heart disease. However, psoriasis-related MMS has not been reported. CASE SUMMARY: We collected data on patients with stroke due to MMS between January 2017 and December 2019 and identified four cases of psoriasis. Case histories, imaging, and hematological data were collected. The average age of the initial stroke onset was 58.25 ± 11.52 years; three cases of hemorrhagic and one case of ischemic stroke were included. The average duration from psoriasis confirmation to the initial MMS-mediated stroke onset was 17 ± 3.56 years. All MMS-related stenoses involved the bilateral cerebral arteries: Suzuki grade III in one case, grade IV in two cases, and grade V in one case. Abnormally elevated plasma interleukin-6 levels were observed in four patients. Two patients had abnormally elevated immunoglobulin E levels, and two had thrombocytosis. All four patients received medication instead of surgery. With an average follow-up time of 2 years, two causing transient ischemic attacks occurred in two patients, and no hemorrhagic events occurred. CONCLUSION: Psoriasis may be a potential risk factor for MMS. Patients with psoriasis should be screened for MMS when they present with neurological symptoms.

RESUMO

Carrying out research on the management of electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) is necessary to maintain the environment and human health. The dredged sludge (DS) and water hyacinth (WH) generated from dredging projects are potential environmental threats, and therefore suitable methods need to be found for their treatment. In this study, ceramsite was prepared by a two-step low-temperature firing method using DS and EMR as raw materials, WH as a pore-forming additive, and aluminate cement as a binder for the adsorption of phosphorus from wastewater. The optimal ratio and process parameters of the ceramsite were determined by mechanical and adsorption properties. The static adsorption experiments were conducted to study the effect of ceramsite dosage and solution pH on the removal of phosphorus. At the same time, dynamic adsorption experiments were designed to consider the influence of flow rate on its actual absorption effect, to explore the actual effect of ceramsite in wastewater treatment, and to derive a dynamic adsorption model that can provide technical support and theoretical guidance for environmental management.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Postmenopausal women are prone to develop cardiovascular disorders. In addition, cardiovascular risk in women can be influenced by the long-term prescription of drugs that lead to estrogen deprivation, e.g., aromatase inhibitors, and that can cause dyslipidemia. Little is known about the impact of exemestane, an aromatase inhibitor, on serum lipids' concentration in women. Hence, we conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the influence of this pharmacological agent on the lipid profile in women. METHODS: The Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed/Medline and EMBASE databases were searched by two surveyors for manuscripts published from the inception of these databases until April 3rd, 2023. No language restrictions were applied to the search. The random effects model was used to generate the combined results as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: In total, 8 eligible RCTs were included in the meta-analysis. Overall results from the random effects model indicate that exemestane administration increases LDL-C (WMD: 4.42 mg/dL, 95 % CI: 0.44, 8.41, P = 0.02) and decreases HDL-C (WMD: -6.03 mg/dL, 95 % CI: -7.77, -4.29, P < 0.001) and TC (WMD: -5.40 mg/dL, 95 % CI: -9.95, -0.86, P = 0.02) levels, respectively. Moreover, exemestane prescription only lowered TG concentrations when it was administered for < 12 months (WMD: -14.60 mg/dL, 95 % CI: -23.57 to -5.62, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Currently available evidence suggests that the administration of exemestane in females increases LDL-C values and reduces HDL-C, TC, and, when prescribed for less than 12 months, TG concentrations.

RESUMO

Considering the instability and toxicity of 3D Pb-based perovskite nanocrystals, lead-free low-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have attracted widespread attention as potential substitutes. Herein, two new tin-based 0D halides [H4BAPP]SnBr5·Br and [H4BAPP]SnCl5·Cl·H2O (BAPP = 1,4-bis(3-aminopropyl)piperazine) were synthesized successfully based on [SnX5]3- as an emission center. Typically, [H4BAPP]SnBr5·Br and [H4BAPP]SnCl5·Cl·H2O display broadband yellow and yellow-green light emissions originating from the radiative recombination of self-trapped excitons (STEs). The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of the two compounds were calculated to be 19.27% and 2.36%, respectively. Furthermore, the excellent chemical and thermal stability and broadband light emissions reveal their potential application in solid-state white lighting diodes.

RESUMO

The current study examined the acquisition, retention, and transfer effects of a motor program. Children with autism spectrum disorder participated in a 9-week program that targeted 13 fundamental motor skills based upon the Test of Gross Motor Development-3. Assessments were conducted before and after the program, as well as at 2-month follow-up. Significant improvements were found on not only the trained fundamental motor skills (acquisition) but also the untrained tasks on balance (transfer). The follow-up tests revealed continuous improvement on the trained locomotor skills (retention), as well as the untrained skills on balance (retention + transfer). These findings highlight the importance of continuous support and long-term participation on motor practices.

RESUMO

Three 2,3-diketoquinoxaline alkaloids were isolated from Heterosmilax yunnanensis Gagnep. Their structures were determined through 1D and 2D NMR, HR-ESI-MS, UV, and IR as 1-[5′-(3″-hydroxy-3″-methyl) glutaryl] ribityl-2,3-diketo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-6,7-dimethylquinoxaline (1), 1-[2′-(3″-hydroxy-3″-methyl) glutaryl]ribityl-2,3-diketo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-6,7-dimethylquinoxaline (2), and 1-ribityl-2,3-diketo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-6,7-dimethylquinoxaline (3). Compounds 1 and 2 are novel compounds, and 3 was isolated from H. yunnanensis for the first time. The hepatoprotective activity of these three compounds was evaluated, with compound 3 showing promising hepatoprotective activity.

RESUMO

This study contributes to the field of sustainability by analyzing changes in firms following the adoption of new environmental protection laws to meet community sustainability needs. Focusing on the Chinese context, it examined the relationship between firms' environmental protection measures (i.e., corporate green behavior) and profitability (i.e., corporate tax avoidance). The moderating roles of environmental uncertainty and digital technology application in this relationship were also investigated. The findings offer insights into the complex dynamics linking firms' environmental initiatives to their business outcomes and financial decisions within the framework of a sustainable community. Ultimately, this study highlights the importance and implications of sustainable practices for both the environment and corporate financial performance. Firms' environmental behaviors are enablers of sustainable communities by deploying natural resources and creating a more resilient economy through active community participation in green production models.

RESUMO

Transferrin-conjugated polymersomes, transferrin-biotin/avidin/biotin-Pluronic F127-poly(lactic acid) (Tf-F127-PLA), were successfully prepared through a biotin-avidin bridging technique to study their ability to inhibit multidrug resistance of cancer cells. Hydrophilic doxorubicin (DOX) was selected as the model drug to be loaded into Tf-F127-PLA polymersomes. DOX loaded in Tf-F127-PLA polymersomes was released fast initially, followed by a slow release. The effect of the transferrin ligand density of Tf-F127-PLA/DOX polymersomes on their targeting properties was studied by both cytotoxicity and cellular uptake assays against A549 lung cancer cells. It was shown that Tf-F127-PLA/DOX polymersomes had better targeting ability than nontargeted drug-loaded polymersomes. Furthermore, Tf-F127-PLA/DOX polymersomes with 2% Tf molar content have more effective antitumor activity and a higher cellular uptake than those with 4 and 5% Tf molar content. 2% Tf-F127-PLA/DOX polymersomes also exhibited better anticancer ability in multidrug resistant cancer cells A549/ADR than nontargeted PLA-F127-PLA/DOX polymersomes. It was further proved that the endocytosis of polymersomes by A549/ADR cells was an energy-dependent endocytosis process, which was related to clathrin, macrocytosis, and caveolin. Also, the endocytosis of Tf-F127-PLA/DOX polymersomes was proven to be mediated by the transferrin receptor.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Drawing on cognitive appraisal theory, this study investigates the effect of daily COVID-19 news on daily anxiety and protective behaviors (e.g., wearing masks and washing hands). This study proposes that such processes, leading to self-protection, are highly likely when individuals have directly experienced the Wuhan epidemic at the beginning of 2020, which is the most serious COVID-19 outbreak in history. METHODS: The positive effect of daily COVID-19 news on daily protective behaviors through daily COVID-19 anxiety was examined in this study, which was hypothesized to be accentuated by direct Wuhan epidemic experience. An online survey based on the experience sample method (ESM) was conducted during the COVID-19 epidemic in Hebei Province, China, at the beginning of 2021, in which 82 working adults participated in a daily survey for five consecutive days. Once a day during the five-day period, the participants reported their daily COVID-19 news exposure, daily COVID-19 anxiety, and daily protective behaviors. Wuhan epidemic experience was measured by the place of residence of the participants during the 2020 Wuhan epidemic through a separate general survey conducted before the ESM survey. RESULTS: Analysis of 392 day-level data confirmed the positive link between daily COVID-19 news and daily protective behaviors, mediated by daily COVID-19 anxiety (b = 0.03, SE = 0.01, p = 0.018). Furthermore, the mediated effect was significant for the participants with direct COVID-19 experience in Wuhan in 2020 (b = 0.05, SE = 0.03, p = 0.041) but not significant for those without direct experience in Wuhan (b = 0.01, SE = 0.01, p = 0.461). Thus, the results confirmed the positive moderating role of Wuhan epidemic experience. CONCLUSIONS: The analysis reveals the psychological mechanism through which COVID-19 information promotes self-protection measures to control the infectious disease and highlights the importance of direct COVID-19 experience in generating such an effect.

RESUMO

AIMS: Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) play an important role in vascular repair. However, they are dysfunctional in the inflammatory microenvironment during restenosis. In this study, we investigated whether omentin-1, an anti-inflammatory factor, could reduce neointima formation after carotid artery injury (CAI) in rats by improving EPC functions that were damaged by inflammation and the underlying mechanisms. MAIN METHODS: EPCs were transfected with adenoviral vectors expressing human omentin-1 or green fluorescent protein (GFP). Then, the rats received 2 × 106 EPCs expressing omentin-1 or GFP by tail vein injection directly after CAI and again 24 h later. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunohistochemistry were used for analyzing neointimal hyperplasia. Besides, EPCs were treated with omentin-1 and TNF-α to examine the underlying mechanism. KEY FINDINGS: Our results showed that omentin-1 could significantly improve EPC functions, including proliferation, apoptosis and tube formation. Meanwhile, EPCs overexpressed with omentin-1 could significantly reduce neointimal hyperplasia and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression after CAI in rats. TNF-α could notably induce EPC dysfunction, which could be markedly reversed by omentin-1 through the inhibition of the p38 MAPK/CREB pathway. Furthermore, a p38 MAPK agonist (anisomycin) significantly abrogated the protective effects of omentin-1 on EPCs damaged by TNF-α. SIGNIFICANCE: Our results indicated that genetically modifying EPC with omentin-1 could be an alternative strategy for the treatment of restenosis.

RESUMO

Recently, the discovery of optical spatiotemporal (ST) vortex beams with transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) has attracted increasing attention and is expected to extend the research scope and open new opportunities for practical applications of OAM states. The ST vortex beams are also applicable to other physical fields that involve wave phenomena, and here we develop the ST vortex concept in the field of acoustics and report the generation of Bessel-type ST acoustic vortex beams. The ST vortex beams are fully characterized using the scalar approach for the pressure field and the vector approach for the velocity field. We further investigate the transverse spreading effect and construct ST vortex beams with an ellipse-shaped spectrum to reduce the spreading effect. We also experimentally demonstrated the orthogonality relations between ST vortex beams with different charges. Our study successfully demonstrates the versatility of the acoustic system for exploring and discovering spatiotemporally structured waves, inspiring further investigation of exotic wave physics.

RESUMO

Glucosaminephosphate Nacetyltransferase 1 (GNPNAT1) is a member of the acetyltransferase superfamily, related to general control nondepressible 5 (GCN5). It has been documented that GNPNAT1 expression is increased in lung cancer, whereas its involvement in breast cancer (BC) remains to be further investigated. The present study aimed to evaluate the expression levels of GNPNAT1 in BC and its effect on BC stem cells (BCSCs). The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was used for the analysis of the expression of GNPNAT1 and its clinical significance. Cox regression and logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate prognosisrelated factors. The GNPNAT1binding protein network was constructed using the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING) application. The biological signaling pathways implicated in GNPNAT1 were investigated through function enrichment analysis including Gene Ontology, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes, and gene set enrichment analysis. The singlesample GSEA method was used to investigate the connection between the level of immune infiltration and GNPNAT1 expression in BC. GNPNAT1 expression was upregulated in patients with BC and was significantly associated with a poor prognosis. GNPNAT1 and its coexpressed genes were mostly enriched in nuclear transport, Golgi vesicle transport, ubiquitinlike protein transferase activity and ribonucleoprotein complex binding, as determined using functional enrichment analysis. GNPNAT1 expression was positively associated with Th2 cells and Thelper cells, and negatively associated with plasmacytoid dendritic cells, CD8+ Tcells and cytotoxic cells. Additionally, the GNPNAT1 expression levels were considerably increased in BCSCs. GNPNAT1 knockdown markedly decreased the stemness ability of SKBR3 and Hs578T cells, including the production of CSC markers and mammosphere or clone formation, while GNPNAT1 overexpression increased the stemness level. Hence, the findings of the present study demonstrate that GNPNAT1 may be exploited as a novel prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for BC.

RESUMO

Aim: Folate-targeted Pluronic™ F-127/poly(lactic acid) (FA-F127-PLA) polymersomes were used as codelivery carriers of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) and paclitaxel (PTX) to achieve a targeted synergistic antitumor effect. Materials & methods: The cytotoxicity of PTX/DOX polymersomes against OVCAR-3 cells was determined by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assay. The cellular uptake of PTX/DOX polymersomes was examined by HPLC and micro-bicinchoninic acid techniques. Results: The polymersomes showed a bilayer core-shell structure with negative charge and good dispersion. PTX1/DOX5 polymersomes with a mass ratio of PTX to DOX of 1:5 showed the best synergistic effect and the highest cellular uptake. Conclusion: FA-F127-PLA polymersomes have the great promise for codelivery of multiple chemotherapeutics to achieve a targeted antitumor synergistic effect.

Hydrophilic doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) and hydrophobic paclitaxel (PTX) are two well-known anticancer drugs. Coadministration of DOX and PTX as a free drug cocktail has been widely used in clinical treatment to further improve their anticancer effect. However, this free drug cocktail often causes a lot of side effects such as cardiotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. In order to reduce the side effects of the drug cocktail and enhance their targeted delivery, folic acid-targeted Pluronic™ F-127 / poly(lactic acid) (FA-F127-PLA) polymersomes were used to load the drug cocktail. Both the cytotoxicity and cellular uptake data showed that PTX/DOX coloaded FA-F127-PLA polymersomes had better synergistic anticancer ability than a DOX and PTX free-drug cocktail.

RESUMO

Ionic surfactants are easily adsorbed by silt and clay particles, thus affecting the flocculation characteristics and settling behavior. The settling velocity, typical size, Zeta potential and surface tension of silt flocs were measured in the presence of two different kinds of ionic surfactants. The results indicated that the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB, a typical cationic surfactant) can dramatically accelerate the settling of slit particles, while the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS, a typical anionic surfactant) slightly retarded silt sedimentation to some extent. In still water, the representative settling velocity dramatically increased from 0.36 cm s-1 to 0.43 cm s-1 with the increase of CTAB concentration, which increased by more than 20%. Oppositely, the sedimentation rate decreased from 0.36 cm s-1 to 0.33 cm s-1 with the increase of LAS concentration. In flowing water, as the flow rate increased from 0 to 20 cm s-1 and the ionic surfactant concentration increased from 0 to 10 mg L-1, the sedimentation rate decreased to 57% and 89% in the presence of CTAB and LAS respectively, which was due to an enhanced dispersion of silt particles and a breaking of flocs. The SEM image test shows that the floc particle size increased 1.5 times of the primary particle size under the high CTAB concentration. The flocculation induced by ionic surfactants greatly influences the sediment size as well as the law of settling velocity. The intrinsic influence mechanism was also discussed based on the variations of silt particle properties. This systematic study can be used for further development of flocculation models and particle size distribution of fine-grained soil.

RESUMO

In order to denitrify the urban tail water deeply and control the eutrophication of surface water, the molecular biology methods were used to study the nitrogen metabolism performance of the denitrification complex flora and the algal-bacteria symbiotic system. The results showed that the nitrogen metabolism complex flora was high ammonification and denitrification performance. The removal effect of ammonia nitrogen of group JZ was very well in urban tailwater, and the degradation rate was as high as 95%. The removal effect of total nitrogen of group JZ was better than that of group J in the experimental water distribution. High-throughput sequencing showed that the main dominant flora and proportion of group J were Firmicutes 44.53%, Proteobacteria 43.41%, Actinobacteria 5.37%, Bacteroidetes 3.04%, and Chloroflexi 1.35%. The main dominant bacterial groups in the group JZ were 33.89% Cyanobacteria, 25.34% Chloroflexi, 19.38% Proteobacteria, 10.02% Firmicutes, and 4.20% Acidobacteria. The dominant species in group J were compared with those in group JZ; the proportions were 82% and 18% in Firmicutes, 69% and 31% in Proteobacteria, 1% and 99% in Cyanobacteria, 5.1% and 95% in Chloroflexi, 73% and 27% in Actinobacteria. It was concluded that the removal effect of ammonia nitrogen of group JZ was high in the urban tailwater. With the addition and growth of Micrococcus in group J, the nitrogen metabolism flora in group JZ changed accordingly, so as to adapt to the environment in which the dominant algae formed. It forms a new nitrogen metabolism system of bacteria and algae with Micrococcus. This research provides a theoretical and data basis for the application of algal-bacterial co-metabolism systems.

RESUMO

Friction behaviors of an amorphous SiO2 tip sliding on the Au(111) surface in atomic force microscopy (AFM) are investigated through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We observed a regime of extremely low, close-to-zero friction at low normal loads with clear stick-slip friction signals. The friction is almost independent of the applied normal load below a threshold value. However, above this loading threshold, friction can remain low or increase sharply. Such an unexpected friction duality is attributed to the high probability of defect formation at the sliding interface that can induce plowing friction in a high-friction state. The energy difference between the low-friction state and the high-friction state is surprisingly low, which is comparable to kT (∼25 meV) at room temperature. These findings are consistent with previous AFM friction measurements using silicon AFM tips. Further MD simulations show that one can always use an amorphous SiO2 tip to image the crystalline surface with regular stick-slip friction signals. This is largely due to the fact that there is always a small fraction of contacting Si and O atoms at the sliding interface that are sitting on the relatively stable, close-to-hollow sites of the crystalline Au(111) surface during the stick stage; thus, they are capable of sampling local energy minima. We anticipate that regular stick-slip friction can be achieved even in the intermediate loading range, so long as the low-friction state is maintained when friction duality occurs.

RESUMO

The present report firstly described a critically ill patient receiving a dosing regimen of ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) (1.875g q24h) to eliminate multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and a scheduled time for prolonged intermittent renal replacement therapy (PIRRT) every 48h (6h-session beginning 12h after the previous dosage on hemodialysis day). This dosing regimen for CAZ-AVI and a scheduled time for PIRRT allowed pharmacodynamic parameters of ceftazidime and avibactam to have little difference on hemodialysis and non-hemodialysis days so that we can maintain a relatively stable drug concentration. Our report highlighted not only the importance of dosing regimens in patients with PIRRT but also the significance of hemodialysis time points during the dosing interval. The innovative therapeutic plan proved to be suitable for patients infected with Klebsiella pneumoniae when on PIRRT according to the trough plasma concentrations of ceftazidime and avibactam which were maintained above the minimum inhibitory concentration during the dosing interval.
