RESUMO

The genus Salmonella consists of Gram-negative bacteria with various serotypes. It commonly causes bacterial infections that affect the intestines. Infection can occur in humans and animals through the ingestion of contaminated food or water, or through contact with infected animals or environments. Complications commonly include intestinal hemorrhage and perforation, though vertebral osteomyelitis is rarely observed. Therefore, in patients with spinal cord abscesses, The genus Salmonella is typically not considered a likely pathogen, especially in the absence of typical symptoms. In this case, the limited information provided by traditional cultivation methods, particularly under the influence of antibiotics. However, next-generation sequencing (NGS) unexpectedly detected Salmonella, which assisted in formulating the final treatment plan. This underscores the role and clinical value of NGS in pathogen identification.

RESUMO

Background: There is a shortage of reliable predictive models to provide valuable prognostic information for early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) without lymph node metastasis (LNM). We aimed to develop and validate a nomogram using the prognostic factors in T1N0 ESCC patients. Methods: Patients with pathological T1N0 ESCC who underwent esophagectomy between 2014 and 2021 at three institutes were reviewed. The prognostic factors were evaluated by Cox proportional hazards model and a nomogram was developed. Patients were divided into high- and low-risk groups based on cut-off value of total points in the nomogram. Overall survival (OS) was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. Results: A total of 275 patients were included and split into training (n=180) and external validation (n=95) cohorts. In the training cohort, multivariable analysis showed that the surgical approach, T1 substage, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level were independent prognostic factors. The developed nomogram had relatively high performance, with the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) of 0.783, 0.711 and 0.612 for 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS, respectively. The calibration curves showed that the predicted probability was in good agreement with the actual probability. Forty-seven was determined as cut-off value of total points. High-risk group (n=148) showed a significant poor OS than low-risk group (n=127) (P<0.001). Conclusions: Left surgical approach, stage T1b, and higher CEA were associated with poorer prognosis in T1N0 ESCC patients. The nomogram demonstrated a good performance to predict the individual survival.

RESUMO

Purpose: To explore the plasma proteomic changes of rabbit lung VX2 tumors treated by microwave ablation, and to explore the molecular pathway mechanisms that may be involved. Methods: New Zealand white rabbits were inoculated with VX2 tumor cell suspension in the right lower lung and treated with microwave ablation after 2-3 weeks of tumor formation. Blood was collected at 5 time points (TP1~TP5) before and after ablation by cardiac blood sampling and pre-treated before proteomic analysis. The plasma proteome was analyzed by Data-Independent Acquisition (DIA). Results: Different molecular pathways were activated at different time points:(i) TP1vsTP2: more proteins were down-regulated and enrichment analysis showed that the proteasome pathway was activated. The abnormal protein folding process involved in this pathway is closely related to the process of tumor development. (ii) TP2vsTP3: more proteins were up-regulated although the number of differentially differentiated proteins was lower and enrichment analysis showed that the phagosome pathway was activated. After microwave ablation inactivates tumor cells, it activates the phagosomal pathway for immune clearance of necrotic tumor tissue. (iii) TP3vsTP4: more down-regulated proteins, enrichment analysis showed that cysteine and methionine metabolism pathway was activated. Decreased metabolism of these amino acids suggests that cancer progression may be blocked after microwave ablation therapy. (iv) TP4vsTP5: the number of differential proteins was less and more down-regulated proteins, enrichment analysis showed that glutathione metabolism and metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450 pathway were activated. The down-regulated proteins in this pathway may suggest that microwave ablation may have reduced resistance to certain chemotherapeutic agents following. Conclusions: In the process of lung cancer treatment by microwave ablation, the changes of proteins on the possible molecular pathways at each time point are related to lung cancer, and not only involve some simple inflammatory reactions, and some of the proteins released by destroying the tumor cells can be used as possible drug binding sites and reduce drug resistance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients with postoperative recurrence remains controversial. We aimed to evaluate the effects of radiotherapy (RT) and chemoradiotherapy (CRT) on postoperative recurrence in ESCC patients. METHODS: Recurrence ESCC patients who received salvage RT and CRT from January 2015 to January 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Post-recurrence survival (PRS) and prognostic factors were evaluated by Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards models, respectively. Subgroup analyses were performed based on pathological lymph node (LN) status (negative/positive) to evaluate the differences in salvage treatments and toxic reaction. RESULTS: A total of 170 patients were enrolled, with a median age of 60 years (range 43-77). No significant difference was found in the median PRS between the salvage RT and CRT groups (p > 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that TNM stage III and IV, macroscopic medullary type, and distant metastasis recurrence pattern were independent prognostic factors (all p < 0.05) for PRS. Salvage treatment was not associated with PRS (p = 0.897). However, in patients with negative LN, CRT was associated with prolonged survival (p = 0.043) and had no significant differences in toxic reactions compared to RT (p = 0.924). In addition, RT showed better prognoses (p = 0.020) and lower toxic reactions (p = 0.030) than CRT in patients with positive LNs. CONCLUSIONS: Based on prognosis and toxic reactions, ESCC recurrence patients with negative LNs could benefit from CRT, but RT should be recommended for patients with positive LNs.

RESUMO

Background: Non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) is a common form of coronary artery disease, and its prognosis is influenced by multiple factors. This study aimed to analyze the predictive role of the combined application of cardiac troponin and cardiac function indices in NSTEMI patients' prognosis. Methods: NSTEMI patients were screened and included in the study. Cardiac troponin elevation ratio (cardiac troponin I (cTnI)/upper limit of normal (ULN)) was measured upon admission, and cardiac function was assessed. General clinical data, laboratory parameters, Grace score, New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class, complications, and mortality data were collected. The correlation between mortality in NSTEMI patients and clinical parameters was analyzed, and a nomogram prediction model for NSTEMI patient mortality was established. Results: A total of 252 NSTEMI patients were included. Female gender, elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (H-CRP), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) < 50%, NYHA class III and IV, and cTnI/ULN elevation by 36.25-fold were significantly independently associated with mortality outcomes. Multifactorial logistic analysis indicated that these indices remained associated with mortality. A nomogram model predicting NSTEMI patient mortality was constructed using these indices, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.911, sensitivity of 97.5%, and specificity of 72.8%. This predictive model outperformed the Grace score (AUC = 0.840). Conclusions: In NSTEMI patients, a 36.25-fold increase in cTnI/ULN, coupled with NYHA class III and IV, independently predicted prognosis. We developed a nomogram model integrating cTnI/ULN and cardiac function indices, aiding clinicians in assessing risk and implementing early interventions for improved outcomes.

RESUMO

Cisplatin is a widely used drug for the clinical treatment of tumors. However, nephrotoxicity limits its widespread use. A series of compounds including eight analogs (G3-G10) and 40 simplifiers (G11-G50) were synthesized based on the total synthesis of Psiguamer A and B, which were novel meroterpenoids with unusual skeletons from the leaves of Psidium guajava. Among these compounds, (d)-G8 showed the strongest protective effect on cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) in vitro and vivo, and slightly enhanced the antitumor efficacy of cisplatin. A mechanistic study showed that (d)-G8 promoted the efflux of cisplatin via upregulating the copper transporting efflux proteins ATP7A and ATP7B. It enhanced autophagy through the activation of the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway. (d)-G8 showed no acute toxicity or apparent pathological damage in the healthy mice at a single dose of 1 g/kg. This study provides a promising lead against cisplatin-induced AKI.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the impact of a lung-protective ventilation strategy utilizing transpulmonary driving pressure titrated positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on the prognosis [mechanical ventilation duration, hospital stay, 28-day mortality rate and incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), survival outcome] of patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). METHODS: A total of 105 ARDS patients were randomly assigned to either the control group (n = 51) or the study group (n = 53). The control group received PEEP titration based on tidal volume [A tidal volume of 6 mL/kg, flow rate of 30-60 L/min, frequency of 16-20 breaths/min, constant flow rate, inspiratory-to-expiratory ratio of 1:1 to 1:1.5, and a plateau pressure ≤ 30-35 cmH2O. PEEP was adjusted to maintain oxygen saturation (SaO2) at or above 90%, taking into account blood pressure], while the study group received PEEP titration based on transpulmonary driving pressure (Esophageal pressure was measured as a surrogate for pleural pressure using an esophageal pressure measurement catheter connected to the ventilator. Tidal volume and PEEP were adjusted based on the observed end-inspiratory and end-expiratory transpulmonary pressures, aiming to maintain a transpulmonary driving pressure below 15 cmH2O during mechanical ventilation. Adjustments were made 2-4 times per day). Statistical analysis and comparison were conducted on lung function indicators [oxygenation index (OI), arterial oxygen tension (PaO2), arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2)] as well as other measures such as heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and central venous pressure in two groups of patients after 48 h of mechanical ventilation. The 28-day mortality rate, duration of mechanical ventilation, length of hospital stay, and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) incidence were compared between the two groups. A 60-day follow-up was performed to record the survival status of the patients. RESULTS: In the control group, the mean age was (55.55 ± 10.51) years, with 33 females and 18 males. The pre-ICU hospital stay was (32.56 ± 9.89) hours. The mean Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score was (19.08 ± 4.67), and the mean Murray Acute Lung Injury score was (4.31 ± 0.94). In the study group, the mean age was (57.33 ± 12.21) years, with 29 females and 25 males. The pre-ICU hospital stay was (33.42 ± 10.75) hours. The mean APACHE II score was (20.23 ± 5.00), and the mean Murray Acute Lung Injury score was (4.45 ± 0.88). They presented a homogeneous profile (all P > 0.05). Following intervention, significant improvements were observed in PaO2 and OI compared to pre-intervention values. The study group exhibited significantly higher PaO2 and OI compared to the control group, with statistically significant differences (all P < 0.05). After intervention, the study group exhibited a significant increase in PaCO2 (43.69 ± 6.71 mmHg) compared to pre-intervention levels (34.19 ± 5.39 mmHg). The study group's PaCO2 was higher than the control group (42.15 ± 7.25 mmHg), but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in hemodynamic indicators between the two groups post-intervention (all P > 0.05). The study group demonstrated significantly shorter mechanical ventilation duration and hospital stay, while 28-day mortality rate and incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) showed no significant differences. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed a significantly better survival outcome in the study group at the 60-day follow-up (HR = 0.565, 95% CI: 0.320-0.999). CONCLUSION: Lung-protective mechanical ventilation using transpulmonary driving pressure titrated PEEP effectively improves lung function, reduces mechanical ventilation duration and hospital stay, and enhances survival outcomes in patients with ARDS. However, further study is needed to facilitate the wider adoption of this approach.

RESUMO

Aedes albopictus is an important vector of arboviruses and prefers small containers of stagnant water as oviposition sites. One of the mechanisms mosquitoes use to search for suitable oviposition sites is relying on odor cues from prospective sites and their surroundings. The genetic and molecular bases of this behavior are not known for Ae. albopictus. Oviposition site-searching behavior can be separated into 2 stages: container location and water detection. We applied a glue compound to the antennae and the maxillary palps of adult females to mask their ability to detect molecules that may guide them to preferred oviposition sites. Treatment of the antennae significantly reduces the location index (P < 0.001), indicating a decreased ability to find oviposition sites, whereas no significant difference was observed in mosquitoes with maxillary palps treated with the same glue compound (P > 0.05). The detection time, measured as the duration from contact with the water surface to the deposition of the first egg, was extended in mosquitoes with treated antennae or maxillary palps, supporting the conclusion that olfaction is involved in the detection of oviposition site. Transcriptomic analysis identified differentially expressed olfactory-related genes, including obp67, obp56d-like, obp19d-like and obp67-like. RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated knockdown of obp67 and obp56d-like significantly affected the location index and detection time, respectively. Cas9/guide RNA-mediated knockout of obp56d-like resulted in a prolonged detection time, compared with the wild type (P < 0.05). These findings help to elucidate aspects of the olfactory mechanisms involved in Ae. albopictus oviposition site selection, and provide a basis for the development of mosquito surveillance and control strategies.

RESUMO

Serine protease 50 (PRSS50/TSP50) is highly expressed in spermatocytes. Our study investigated its role in testicular development and spermatogenesis. Initially, PRSS50 knockdown was observed to impair DNA synthesis in spermatocytes. To further explore this, we generated PRSS50 knockout ( Prss50 -/- ) mice ( Mus musculus), which exhibited abnormal spermatid nuclear compression and reduced male fertility. Furthermore, dysplastic seminiferous tubules and decreased sex hormones were observed in 4-week-old Prss50 -/- mice, accompanied by meiotic progression defects and increased apoptosis of spermatogenic cells. Mechanistic analysis indicated that PRSS50 deletion resulted in increased phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) and elevated levels of MAP kinase phosphatase 3 (MKP3), a specific ERK antagonist, potentially accounting for testicular dysplasia in adolescent Prss50 -/- mice. Taken together, these findings suggest that PRSS50 plays an important role in testicular development and spermatogenesis, with the MKP3/ERK signaling pathway playing a significant role in this process.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is a major arbovirus vector with small stagnant water containers being its oviposition sites. Mosquitoes search for these sites based on their olfactory cues (odor and moisture emanating from the water at the oviposition site), visual cues (size and color of the site), and gustatory cues (ion and nutrient concentration in that water). The gustatory mechanism through which mosquitoes search for oviposition sites remains unknown. METHODS: To investigate the role of taste receptors in Ae. albopictus oviposition site selection, we developed a laboratory model. This model assessed mosquito behavior in locating and detecting oviposition sites, using a location index to quantify site preference and detection time to measure response to water presence. We compared oviposition site-searching efficiency between mosquitoes with blocked and unblocked appendages, targeting the taste organs. Transcriptome sequencing was conducted to identify differentially expressed genes between water-exposed and unexposed mosquitoes. CRISPR/Cas9 technology was then employed to generate a mutant strain with a targeted gene knockout. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the blocked and unblocked groups in the location index. In contrast, the detection time of the unblocked group differed significantly from all other groups, including those with blocked foreleg tarsus, midleg tarsus, hindleg tarsus, all tibia, and all tarsus. Transcriptome sequencing analyses of water-exposed and unexposed mosquitoes revealed that the taste-related gene gustatory receptor 11(gr11) was differentially expressed. This gene was knocked out with CRISPR/Cas9 technology to generate a pure mutant strain with 2- and 4-bp deletions, which exhibited a significantly longer detection time than the wild-type strain. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals the role of Ae. albopictus gr11 in water detection at oviposition sites, thereby providing a theoretical basis and scientific guidelines for managing the breeding sites of these mosquitoes.

RESUMO

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) have emerged as the most promising next-generation energy storage devices. However, the unsatisfactory ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes at room temperature has impeded the advancement of solid-state batteries. In this work, a multifunctional composite solid electrolyte (CSE) is developed by incorporating boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) into polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP). BNNTs, with a high aspect ratio, trigger the dissociation of Li salts, thus generating a greater population of mobile Li+, and establishing long-distance Li+ transport pathways. PVDF-HFP/BNNT exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 8.0 × 10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature and a Li+ transference number of 0.60. Moreover, a Li//Li symmetric cell based on PVDF-HFP/BNNT demonstrates robust cyclic performance for 3400 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm-2. The ASSLMB formed from the assembly of PVDF-HFP/BNNT with LiFePO4 and Li exhibits a capacity retention of 93.2% after 850 cycles at 0.5C and 25 °C. The high-voltage all-solid-state LiCoO2/Li cell based on PVDF-HFP/BNNT also exhibits excellent cyclic performance, maintaining a capacity retention of 96.4% after 400 cycles at 1C and 25 °C. Furthermore, the introduction of BNNTs is shown to enhance the thermal conductivity and flame retardancy of the CSE.

RESUMO

Objective: This prospective study is to explore the role of specific circRNAs in predicting the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Methods: From July 1, 2021 to December 1, 2021, peripheral blood samples were collected from 62 premature infants with gestational age (GA) ≤32 weeks on the 7th, 14th, and 28th day after birth. Then, on the 28th day, the included infants were divided into the BPD group and the non-BPD group according to the definition of BPD. Serum exosomal circRNAs from peripheral blood were identified, sequenced, and compared between the BPD and non-BPD groups at different time points. Specific differentially expressed circRNAs were further verified from another 42 enrolled premature infants (GA ≤32 weeks). The classical lung biological markers in serum were also measured simultaneously. Results: Hsa_circ_0001359 in serum exosomes showed continuous differential expression between the BPD group and the non-BPD group on the 7th, 14th, and 28th day. Compared with that, classical lung biological markers like IL-6, IL-33, KL-6, and ET-1 did not exhibit continuous differences. Moreover, the expression of hsa_circ_0001359 on day 7 had a higher predictive value in predicting BPD (area under curve:0.853, 95% CI:0.738-0.968; adjusted odds ratio:6.033, 95% CI:2.373-13.326). The calibration curve further showed the mean absolute error = 0.033, mean squared error = 0.00231, and quantile of absolute error = 0.058. Conclusion: Hsa_circ_0001359 in serum exosomes is a promising marker for predicting BPD in preterm infants with gestational age ≤32 weeks.

RESUMO

Objective: To develop a highly sensitive and rapid nucleic acid detection method for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Methods: We designed, developed, and manufactured an integrated disposable device for SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid extraction and detection. The precision of the liquid transfer and temperature control was tested. A comparison between our device and a commercial kit for SARS-Cov-2 nucleic acid extraction was performed using real-time fluorescence reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The entire process, from SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid extraction to amplification, was evaluated. Results: The precision of the syringe transfer volume was 19.2 ± 1.9 µL (set value was 20), 32.2 ± 1.6 (set value was 30), and 57.2 ± 3.5 (set value was 60). Temperature control in the amplification tube was measured at 60.0 ± 0.0 °C (set value was 60) and 95.1 ± 0.2 °C (set value was 95) respectively. SARS-Cov-2 nucleic acid extraction yield through the device was 7.10 × 10 6 copies/mL, while a commercial kit yielded 2.98 × 10 6 copies/mL. The mean time to complete the entire assay, from SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid extraction to amplification detection, was 36 min and 45 s. The detection limit for SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid was 250 copies/mL. Conclusion: The integrated disposable devices may be used for SARS-CoV-2 Point-of-Care test (POCT).

RESUMO

Histone arginine residue methylation is crucial for individual development and gene regulation. However, the dynamics of histone arginine methylation in response to cellular stress remains largely unexplored. In addition, the interplay and regulatory mechanisms between this and other histone modifications are important scientific questions that require further investigation. This study aimed to investigate the changes in histone arginine methylation in response to DNA damage. We report a global decrease in histone H3R26 symmetric dimethylation (H3R26me2s) and hypoacetylation at the H3K27 site in response to DNA damage. Notably, H3R26me2s exhibits a distribution pattern similar to that of H3K27ac across the genome, both of which are antagonistic to H3K27me3. Additionally, histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) may be recruited to the H3R26me2s demethylation region to mediate H3K27 deacetylation. These findings suggest crosstalk between H3R26me2s and H3K27ac in regulating gene expression.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the dietary nutrient intake of Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients, identify influencing factors, and explore the correlation between dietary nutrient intake and nutritional and disease control indicators. METHODS: This was a multicenter cross-sectional study. A dietary survey was conducted using a three-day dietary record method, and a self-designed diet management software was utilized to calculate the daily intake of dietary nutrients. The nutritional status and disease control indicators were assessed using subjective global assessment, handgrip strength, blood test indexes, and dialysis adequacy. RESULTS: A total of 382 MHD patients were included in this study. Among them, 225 (58.9%) and 233 (61.0%) patients' protein and energy intake did not meet the recommendations outlined in the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative Clinical Practice Guideline for Nutrition in Chronic Kidney Disease (2020 update). The average protein and energy intake for these patients were 0.99 ± 0.32 g/kg/d and 29.06 ± 7.79 kcal/kg/d, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that comorbidity-diabetes had a negative influence on normalized daily energy intake (nDEI = DEI / ideal body weight) (B = -2.880, p = 0.001) and normalized daily protein intake (nDPI = DPI / ideal body weight) (B = -0.109, p = 0.001). Pearson correlation analysis revealed that dietary DPI (r = -0.109, p < 0.05), DEI (r = -0.226, p < 0.05) and phosphorus (r = -0.195, p < 0.001) intake were statistically correlated to Kt/V; dietary nDPI (r = 0.101, p < 0.05) and sodium (r = -0.144, p < 0.001) intake were statistically correlated to serum urea nitrogen; dietary DPI (r = 0.200, p < 0.001), DEI (r = 0.241, p < 0.001), potassium (r = 0.129, p < 0.05), phosphorus (r = 0.199, p < 0.001), and fiber (r = 0.157, p < 0.001) intake were statistically correlated to serum creatinine; dietary phosphorus (r = 0.117, p < 0.05) and fiber (r = 0.142, p < 0.001) intake were statistically correlated to serum phosphorus; dietary nDPI (r = 0.125, p < 0.05), DPI (r = 0.135, p < 0.05), nDEI (r = 0.116, p < 0.05), DEI (r = 0.125, p < 0.05), potassium (r = 0.148, p < 0.001), and phosphorus (r = 0.156, p < 0.001) intake were statistically correlated to subjective global assessment scores; dietary nDPI (r = 0.215, p < 0.001), DPI (r = 0.341, p < 0.001), nDEI (r = 0.142, p < 0.05), DEI (r = 0.241, p < 0.001), potassium (r = 0.166, p < 0.05), phosphorus (r = 0.258, p < 0.001), and fiber (r = 0.252, p < 0.001) intake were statistically correlated to handgrip strength in males; dietary fiber (r = 0.190, p < 0.05) intake was statistically correlated to handgrip strength in females. CONCLUSIONS: The dietary nutrient intake of MHD patients need improvement. Inadequate dietary nutrient intake among MHD patients could have a detrimental effect on their blood test indexes and overall nutritional status. It is crucial to address and optimize the dietary intake of nutrients in this patient population to enhance their health outcomes and well-being.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lymph node metastasis is significantly associated with a worse prognosis in patients with localized early-stage esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. This study aimed to explore the prognostic factors and develop a nomogram for predicting survival in patients with pathologic T1-2N+ esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: Between 2014 and 2022, patients with pT1-2N+ esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent esophagectomy with lymphadenectomy at 2 institutes were reviewed and assigned to training and external validation cohorts. Independent prognostic factors were identified via univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. The nomogram model was developed and evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and calibration curve. RESULTS: In total, 268 patients with a median age of 65 years (range, 40-82) were included and assigned to training (n = 190) and external validation (n = 78) cohorts. The Cox proportional hazards model demonstrated that body mass index (P = .031), surgical approach (P < .001), T stage (P = .015), and Clavien-Dindo classification (P < .001) were independent prognostic factors in the training cohort. The nomogram showed good discrimination, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year of 0.810, 0.789, and 0.809 in the training cohort and 0.782, 0.679, and 0.698 in the validation cohort. The calibration curve showed that the predicted survival probability was in good agreement with the actual survival probability. CONCLUSION: Lower body mass index, left surgical approach, T2 stage, and Clavien-Dindo classification grade III to V were related to worse prognosis in patients with pT1-T2N+ esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. The developed nomogram may predict individual survival accurately.

RESUMO

Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common inflammatory intestinal disease in preterm infants, with a high incidence and mortality rate. The etiology and mechanisms of NEC are not yet fully understood, and multiple factors contribute to its occurrence and development. Recent studies have found that anemia is a risk factor for NEC in neonates, but the specific pathogenic mechanism remains unclear. This article reviews recent research on the relationship between anemia and NEC, providing a reference for further understanding the impact of anemia on intestinal injury and its association with NEC.

RESUMO

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have garnered significant interest as one of the most promising energy suppliers for power grid energy storage. However, the poor electrode/electrolyte interfacial stability leads to continual electrolyte decomposition and transition metal dissolution, resulting in rapid performance degradation of SIBs. In this work, we propose a strategy integrating multiple functional bonds to regulate electrode/electrolyte interphase by triple-coupling of succinonitrile (SN), sodium hexafluorophosphate (NaPF6) and fluorinated ethylene carbonate (FEC). Theoretical calculation and experiment results show that the solvation structure of Na+ and ClO4 - is effectively reconfigured by the solvated FEC, SN and PF6 - in PC-based carbonate electrolyte. The newly developed electrolyte demonstrates increased Na+-FEC coordination, weakened interaction of Na+-PC and participation of SN and PF6 - anions in solvation, resulting in the formation of a conformal interfacial layer comprising of sodium oxynitrides (NaNxOy), sodium fluoride (NaF) and phosphorus oxide compounds (NaPxOy). Consequently, a 3 Ah pouch full cell of hard carbon//NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 exhibits an excellent capacity retention of 90.4 % after 1000 cycles. Detailed postmortem analysis of interface chemistry is further illustrated by multiple characterization methods. This study provides a new avenue for developing electrolyte formulations with multiple functional bonds integrated interphases to significantly improve the long-term cycling stability of SIBs.

RESUMO

Background: Intestinal lipoma is considered the most common benign tumor that causes intussusception. This retrospective case-control study aimed to present the clinical and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) features between intestinal lipomas with and without intussusception and examine risk factors that predict intussusception caused by intestinal lipomas. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 281 adult patients diagnosed with intestinal lipoma by radiologists using whole-abdominal MDCT between January 2015 and August 2022. Patients were divided into adult intussusception (AI) and non-AI groups based on MDCT images. Univariate logistic regression was performed to identify risk factors for intestinal lipoma-induced intussusception. Results: A total of 281 patients with intestinal lipomas were included in the study, with an average age of 68.0±11.3 years, and the male to female ratio was about 1:1.4. Among them, 24 patients developed lipoma-induced intussusception. Patients in the AI group presented with more abdominal pain (70.8% vs. 47.1%, P=0.03), nausea/vomiting (37.5% vs. 14.8%, P=0.009), hematochezia/melena (29.2% vs. 11.3%, P=0.02), and abdominal tenderness (66.7% vs. 24.9%, P<0.001). Lipomas were more common in the small bowel (224/281, 79.7%) than the large bowel (57/281, 20.3%). Lipomas in the AI group showed more heterogeneous hypodensity (41.7% vs. 15.6%, P=0.004), longer length (median, 2.2 vs. 1.2 cm, P<0.001), and larger volume (median, 4.1 vs. 0.6 cm3, P<0.001). In the univariate logistic regression, lipoma density [odds ratio (OR) =3.875, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.609-9.331, P=0.003] and lipoma length (OR =3.216, 95% CI: 1.977-5.231, P<0.001) were risk factors for intestinal lipoma-induced intussusception. Conclusions: More patients in the AI group have digestive tract symptoms than those in the non-AI group. Lipoma density and length are risk factors for intussusception in patients with intestinal lipoma. In addition, the common site of intestinal lipoma may have changed from the colon to the small intestine.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The strong invasiveness and rapid expansion of dengue virus (DENV) pose a great challenge to global public health. However, dengue epidemic patterns and mechanisms at a genetic scale, particularly in term of cross-border transmissions, remain poorly understood. Importation is considered as the primary driver of dengue outbreaks in China, and since 1990 a frequent occurrence of large outbreaks has been triggered by the imported cases and subsequently spread to the western and northern parts of China. Therefore, this study aims to systematically reveal the invasion and diffusion patterns of DENV-1 in Guangdong, China from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: These analyses were performed on 179 newly assembled genomes from indigenous dengue cases in Guangdong, China and 5152 E gene complete sequences recorded in Chinese mainland. The genetic population structure and epidemic patterns of DENV-1 circulating in Chinese mainland were characterized by phylogenetics, phylogeography, phylodynamics based on DENV-1 E-gene-based globally unified genotyping framework. RESULTS: Multiple serotypes of DENV were co-circulating in Chinese mainland, particularly in Guangdong and Yunnan provinces. A total of 189 transmission clusters in 38 clades belonging to 22 subgenotypes of genotype I, IV and V of DENV-1 were identified, with 7 Clades of Concern (COCs) responsible for the large outbreaks since 1990. The epidemic periodicity was inferred from the data to be approximately 3 years. Dengue transmission events mainly occurred from Great Mekong Subregion-China (GMS-China), Southeast Asia (SEA), South Asia Subcontinent (SASC), and Oceania (OCE) to coastal and land border cities respectively in southeastern and southwestern China. Specially, Guangzhou was found to be the most dominant receipting hub, where DENV-1 diffused to other cities within the province and even other parts of the country. Genome phylogeny combined with epidemiological investigation demonstrated a clear local consecutive transmission process of a 5C1 transmission cluster (5C1-CN4) of DENV-1 in Guangzhou from 2013 to 2015, while the two provinces of Guangdong and Yunnan played key roles in ongoing transition of dengue epidemic patterns. In contextualizing within Invasion Biology theories, we have proposed a derived three-stage model encompassing the stages of invasion, colonization, and dissemination, which is supposed to enhance our understanding of dengue spreading patterns. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the invasion and diffusion process of DENV-1 in Chinese mainland within a global genotyping framework, characterizing the genetic diversities of viral populations, multiple sources of importation, and periodic dynamics of the epidemic. These findings highlight the potential ongoing transition trends from epidemic to endemic status offering a valuable insight into early warning, prevention and control of rapid spreading of dengue both in China and worldwide.
