RESUMO

Purpose: Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) is a condition in which the linea alba is stretched and widened, and the abdominal muscles are separated from each other. DRA typically occurs in pregnant and postpartum women. We aimed to determine the risk factors and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) of DRA in Chinese postpartum women. Methods: This observational study was conducted in Hangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and involved 534 women who filled out the following risk-factor and PRO questionnaires: SF-MPQ-2, SF-ICIQ, LDQ, EPDS, MBIS, HerQles, and SF-36 (all Chinese versions). The inter-recti distance was measured by palpation. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS v25.0 software and the Mann-Whitney U-test, chi-square test, binary logistic regression analysis (for risk factors of DRA), and the Kendall and Spearman tests (for correlation analysis). Results: After childbirth, 78.1% (417/534) of the enrolled women had DRA. Abdominal surgery (P = 0.002), number of pregnancies (P = 0.035), parity (P = 0.012), number of births (P = 0.02), fetal birth weight (P = 0.014), and waist-to-hip ratio in the supine position (P = 0.045) significantly differed between the DRA and non-DRA groups. Caesarean delivery was an independent risk factor for DRA. The PROs were significantly worse in the DRA group than in the non-DRA group. Conclusion: Caesarean delivery was an independent risk factor for DRA. Women with DRA are more likely to have limited physical activity or function after childbirth, lower self-confidence, and a decreased quality of life.

RESUMO

Introduction: Malocclusion, a common oral health problem in children, is associated with several contributing factors. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of mixed dentition stage malocclusion and its contributing factors in Chinese Zhuang children aged 7-8 years. Methods: Overall, 2,281 Zhuang children, about 7-8 years old, were randomly selected using a stratified whole-cluster sampling method from schools in counties in Northwestern Guangxi, China. The children were examined on-site for malocclusion and caries by trained dentists, and basic data on the children were collected using questionnaires, including age, sex, parental education, parental accompaniment, and children's knowledge of malocclusion and treatment needs. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. Results: The total prevalence of malocclusion in Zhuang children aged 7-8 years was 58.5%, with the highest prevalence of anterior crossbite tendency, and the prevalence of anterior crossbite and anterior edge-to-edge occlusion was 15.1% and 7.7%, respectively. This was followed by an anterior increased overjet of 13.3% and an inter-incisor spacing of 10.3%. The lowest prevalence was 2.7% for anterior open bite. Sex, parental accompaniment, parental education, and decayed, missing, and filled teeth of the first primary molar were factors that contributed to malocclusion in Zhuang children. Conclusion: Malocclusion is a common oral problem among Zhuang children. Therefore, more attention must be paid to the intervention and prevention of malocclusion. The impact factors should be controlled as early as possible.

RESUMO

Dwarfing is an important agronomic trait in fruit breeding. At present, dwarf cultivars or dwarfing rootstocks are used for high-density planting. Although some dwarf rootstocks have been used in the cultivation of pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd), the breeding of dwarf pear rootstocks or cultivars is still sorely lacking. A previous study reported that PbXND1 results in a xylem-dwarf phenotype in pear trees. However, the regulatory mechanism upstream of PbXND1 is unclear. In this study, we identified PbBPC4 as an upstream regulatory factor of PbXND1 in yeast one-hybrid assays. In ß-glucuronidase staining and dual-luciferase assays, PbBPC4 enhanced the activity of the PbXND1 promoter. Tobacco plants overexpressing PbBPC4 showed decreased plant height because of a reduced xylem size. Similar changes in the xylem was observed in transgenic pear roots; those overexpressing PbBPC4 showed reduced xylem size, and those with silencing PbBPC4 expression showed increased xylem size, greater density of xylem vessels, and a larger proportion of the xylem out of the total cross-section area. Expression analyses showed that PbBPC4 increases the transcription of PbXND1, leading to reduced transcript levels of genes involved in the positive regulation of xylem development, ultimately resulting in a xylem-deficient dwarf phenotype. Taken together, our results reveal the mechanism by which PbBPC4 participates in the regulation of xylem development via directly altering the expression of PbXND1, thus leading to the dwarf phenotype in pear. These findings have reference value for the breeding of dwarf pear trees.

RESUMO

Context: Abnormalities in the meiosis process after sperm-egg union can cause fetal chromosome aneuploidy. The rate of birth defects and the mortality of fetuses with chromosome aneuploidy is significantly higher than that of fetuses with normal chromosomes. Both ultrasound and quantitative fluorescence polymerase chain reaction (QF-PCR) have limitations when used singly, but their combined use may provide better diagnoses. Objective: The study intended to investigate the value of QF-PCR combined with ultrasound in early pregnancy for prenatal screening for fetal chromosomal aneuploidy, to contribute to the improvement of prenatal examinations, ultimately enhancing the early detection and management of the aneuploidies. Design: The research team performed a retrospective study. Setting: The study took place at the Affiliated Dongguan Hospital at Southern Medical University in Dongguan, China. Participants: Participants were 1082 pregnant women who underwent an ultrasound examination in early pregnancy, 11 weeks to 13 + 6 weeks, at the hospital between January 2019 and January 2022. Outcome Measures: Using the results of participants' ultrasounds and QF-PCR testing, the research team used the gold standard, a chromosomal karyotype analysis, to evaluate the efficacy in diagnosing fetal chromosomal aneuploidies, of ultrasound alone, QF-PCR testing alone, and their combination. Results: Early-pregnancy ultrasound detected 15 abnormalities, of which seven were an abnormal thickness of the transparent layer of the neck, 22 were abnormal nasal bone, four were a fish-scale appearance of bilateral soles of the feet, and three were other abnormalities, such as an incomplete quadrant of the heart, gastroceles, or dilatation of the pelvis. No cases of missed or failed karyotype cultures occurred. The QF-PCR detected 21 abnormal fetuses, including six with trisomy 21 syndrome, two with trisomy 18 syndrome, one with trisomy 13 syndrome, and 11 with sex-chromosome abnormalities. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of QF-PCR in diagnosing fetal chromosomal aneuploidy were 85.7%, 99.81%, and 99.54%, respectively, and the Kappa value for its consistency with the gold standard was 0.88. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the ultrasound, combined with QF-PCR in diagnosing fetal chromosomal aneuploidy were 95.23%,99.71%, and 99.63%, respectively, and the Kappa value of combined tests' consistency with the gold standard was 0.91. Conclusion: QF-PCR combined with ultrasound in early pregnancy can effectively improve the accuracy of prenatal diagnosis of fetal chromosome aneuploidy, especially for high-risk pregnant women with a high, positive, predictive value, providing a feasible detection method for clinical practice.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Gualou Guizhi decoction (GLGZD) is an ancient Chinese classical prescription widely used to treat ischemic stroke. However, the molecular mechanisms of GLGZD promoting angiogenesis are unavailable. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the angiogenesis effect of GLGZD as well as its mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ischemic stroke was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) in male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. The GLGZD groups received GLGZD (3.6, 7.2 and 14.4 g/kg) orally. Oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) model was constructed in HUVECs receiving GLGZD medicated serum (MS). MRI, H&E staining, qRT-PCR, western blot and immunofluorescence methods were employed. miRNA210 inhibitor was employed to confirm the effects of GLGZD on promoting angiogenesis. Dual luciferase assay was used to verify the binding of miRNA210 with HIF mRNA. RESULTS: GLGZD treatment improved neurological function (by 27%), alleviated neuronal injury (by 76%), reduced infarct volume (by 74%) and increased microvessel density (by fourfold) in vivo. In vitro data had also shown that GLGZD caused proliferation of the cells (by 58%), their migration, and eventual formation of tubes (by threefold). Simultaneously, GLGZD enhanced the levels of angiogenesis-related molecules and activated the HIF/VEGF signalling pathway. Surprisingly, the beneficial effects of GLGZD on post-stroke angiogenesis and neurological recovery were weakened by miRNA210 inhibitor, and also abolished the mediation of proangiogenic factors. miRNA210 directly targeted HIF mRNA. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: GLGZD enhances angiogenesis via activation of the miRNA210/HIF/VEGF signalling pathway, suggesting it can be a novel application as an effective angiogenic formula for stroke recovery.

RESUMO

Purpose: Additional effective therapeutic strategies for Type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients are urgently needed. Gut microbiota plays an important role in T2D development and is a promising treatment strategy for T2D patients. Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (F. prausnitzii) is regarded as one of the most important bacterial indicators for a healthy gut, but the mechanisms of its anti-diabetic properties are still unclear. Methods and Results: The abundance of F. prausnitzii in feces of patients with T2D was detected by using qPCR. The effects of F. prausnitzii on glucose homeostasis, insulin resistance (IR), dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis and inflammation were investigated in type 2 diabetic (T2D) db/db mice. We also investigated F. prausnitzii in people. Our results showed that the abundance of F. prausnitzii was significantly lower in T2D patients compared to healthy subjects. In T2D mice, we found that F. prausnitzii treatment significantly decreased fasting blood glucose and IR index, indicating improved glucose intolerance as well as IR. Furthermore, based on evaluation of lipid-regulating enzyme activities and proinflammatory cytokine levels, F. prausnitzii was not only able to improve inflammation in both adipose tissue and liver, but also ameliorate hepatic steatosis through inhibiting the activity of hepatic lipogenic enzymes. Conclusion: These results suggested that F. prausnitzii might serve as a therapeutic option for T2D by improved IR, lipid metabolism and inflammation.

RESUMO

Duration perception can be heavily distorted owing to repetitive exposure to a relatively long or short sensory event, often causing a duration aftereffect. Here, we used a novel procedure to show that adaptations to both single and average durations produced the duration aftereffect. Participants completed a duration reproduction task (Experiment 1) or a duration category rating task (Experiment 2) after long-term adaptations to a stimulus of medium duration and to stimuli of averagely medium duration. We found that adaptations to both single and average durations resulted in duration aftereffects. The simultaneously recorded functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data revealed that the reduction in neural activity due to long-term adaptation to single duration was observed in the right supramarginal gyrus (SMG) of the parietal lobe, while adaptation to average duration resulted in fMRI adaptations in the left postcentral gyrus (PCG) and middle cingulate gyrus (MCG). At the individual level, the magnitude of the behavioral aftereffect was positively correlated with the magnitude of fMRI adaptation in the right SMG after adaptation to single duration, while there were no significantly positive correlations between the behavioral aftereffect and fMRI adaptations in the left PCG and MCG. These results suggest that there are different neural mechanisms for aftereffects caused by adaptations to single and average durations.

RESUMO

The Bering-Chukchi shelf is one of the world's most productive areas and characterized by high benthic biomass. Sedimentary microbial communities play a crucial role in the remineralization of organic matter and associated biogeochemical cycles, reflecting both short-term changes in the environment and more consistent long-term environmental characteristics in a given habitat. In order to get a better understanding of the community structure of sediment-associated prokaryotes, surface sediments were collected from 26 stations in the Bering-Chukchi shelf and adjacent northern deep seas in this study. Prokaryote community structures were analyzed by metabarcoding of the 16S rRNA gene, and potential interactions among prokaryotic groups were analyzed by co-occurrence networks. Relationships between the prokaryote community and environmental factors were assessed. Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Flavobacteriia were the dominant bacterial classes, contributing 35.0, 18.9, and 17.3% of the bacterial reads, respectively. The phototrophic cyanobacteria accounted for 2.7% of the DNA reads and occurred more abundantly in the Bering-Chukchi shelf. Prokaryotic community assemblages were different in the northern deep seas compared to the Bering-Chukchi shelf, represented by the lowered diversity and the increased abundant operational Taxonomic Units (OTU), suggesting that the abundant taxa may play more important roles in the northern deep seas. Correlation analysis showed that latitude, water depth, and nutrients were important factors affecting the prokaryote community structure. Abundant OTUs were distributed widely in the study area. The complex association networks indicated a stable microbial community structure in the study area. The high positive interactions (81.8-97.7%) in this study suggested that symbiotic and/or cooperative relationships accounted for a dominant proportion of the microbial networks. However, the dominant taxa were generally located at the edge of the co-occurrence networks rather than in the major modules. Most of the keystone OTUs were intermediately abundant OTUs with relative reads between 0.01 and 1%, suggesting that taxa with moderate biomass might have considerable impacts on the structure and function of the microbial community. This study enriched the understanding of prokaryotic community in surface sediments from the Bering-Chukchi shelf and adjacent sea areas.

RESUMO

Background: Electro-acupuncture (EA) has promising effects on diastasis rectus abdominis (DRA), defined as a separation of the two muscle bellies of rectus abdominis. To study, there is scant knowledge or scarce high-quality evidence. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of EA in treating DRA during postpartum. It was assumed that the improvement of DRA was more obvious in the EA group than in the control group. Design: Randomized, controlled, blinded trial (Clinical Trial Registration: ChiCTR2100041891). Setting: Hangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. Participants: Females aged 20-45 years without a past medical history of pathological rectus abdominal dissection were recruited from DRA inclusion criteria from 42 days to 1 year postpartum. Intervention: 110 participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to a control group with no EA intervention (n = 55), and EA group (n = 55). The EA group received ten sessions of EA combined with physical exercise or only physical exercise for 2 weeks with a 26-week follow-up. Measurements: Outcomes were assessed at baseline, week 2, and week 26. The primary outcome was the change of the inter recti distance (IRD) and electromyographic evaluation of the pelvic floor. Secondary outcomes included elasticity of linea alba (LA), paraumbilical subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) measurement, body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat (F%), dyspepsia symptoms, menstrual symptoms, quality of life (QoL), pain performance of patients with lower back pain, postnatal depression symptoms (PDS), postpartum self-image, and DRA-related symptom assessment including urine leakage, frequency, and urgency, constipation, sexual dysfunction, and chronic pelvic pain. Results: A total of 110 maternal (55 in each group) were recruited. The mean difference in IRD from baseline to week 2 and week 26 in all states of the two groups were reduced compared with those before treatment, with statistical significance (P < 0.05). The mean of IRD at the horizontal line of the umbilicus in the end-expiratory state was smaller in the EA group than in the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05) at week 2. The mean of IRD at the horizontal line of the umbilicus in head-up and flexed knee state was smaller in the EA group than in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05) at week 26. Five (9.1%) and thirteen (23.64%) adverse events were reported in EA and control groups, respectively. No serious adverse events were reported. Limitation: The frequency intensity of EA parameters was selected between 4 and 6 because of individual tolerance differences. Conclusion: EA is an effective approach to improve IRD, electromyographic evaluation of the pelvic floor, BMI, the elasticity of LA, paraumbilical SAT, and symptoms of DRA, with durable effects at 26 weeks. RESUMO

The southern Chinese coast is one of the most developed regions in China and is an area where harmful algal blooms (HABs) have occurred frequently. In this study, differences in the phytoplankton community between microscopic observations and 18S rDNA metabarcoding were compared in 89 surface water samples collected from the southern Chinese coast and the western South China Sea (SCS). This is the first report investigating the phytoplankton community and HAB species using a combination of morphological and metabarcoding approaches in this sea area. There were substantial differences in phytoplankton community structure detected by the two methods. Microscopic observation revealed diatom predominance in the phytoplankton community, while metabarcoding indicated dinoflagellate dominance. The phytoplankton community structure obtained by microscopic observation better reflects the real situation in the water column. Metabarcoding annotated more species than morphospecies observed by microscopy. Haptophyta and Cryptophyta were the specific phyla detected in metabarcoding but were missed in microscopy due to their small size. Conversely, some taxa were found in microscopic analysis alone, such as species in Dinophysis, Prorocentrum, and Scrippsiella, suggesting some biases during metabarcoding and gaps in sequence databases. Metabarcoding is superior for detecting morphologically cryptic, small-sized and HAB taxa, such as unarmored dinoflagellates, nanosized hatophytes and chlorophytes, as well as multiple species in Alexandrium, Pseudonitzschia, and Chaetoceros in our study. A total of 62 HAB taxa were identified in this study, including blooming and potentially toxic species. Diatom abundances generally decreased southward, while those of dinoflagellates and haptophytes showed the opposite trend. Chlorophytes were mainly distributed in coastal waters, especially in the Pearl River Estuary. Phytoplankton community structures were shaped by nutrients and salinity, and phosphorus was the most limiting factor for phytoplankton growth. The phytoplankton community in the western SCS showed unique characteristics away from those in the coastal sea areas. The results suggest that the combination of morphological and metabarcoding approaches comprehensively reveals the phytoplankton community structure and diversity of HAB species.

RESUMO

In the past three decades, harmful algal blooms (HAB) have become more frequent and widespread in southeast Chinese sea areas. Resting stages are regarded as the "seed bank" of algal blooms, and play an important role in initiating HABs. The distribution of resting stages in sediments especially those of HAB species can make good predictions about the potential risk of future blooms, however with limited reports. In this study, surface sediment samples were collected in the four sea areas along the southeast Chinese coasts, including Dafeng Port (DF) in the southern Yellow Sea, Xiangshan Bay (XS), Funing Bay (FN), and Dongshan Bay (DS) in the East China Sea. Diversity and community structure of eukaryotic microalgae in surface sediments were assessed by metabarcoding V4 region of the 18S rDNA, focusing on the distribution of HAB species. Biogenic elements including total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), biogenic silicon (BSi), and moisture content (MC) were analyzed. A total of 454 eukaryotic algal OTUs were detected, which belonged to 31 classes of 9 phyla. Altogether 149 algal species were detected in this study, and 59 taxa have been reported to form resting stages. Eukaryotic algal community was similar in XS, FN and DS of the East China Sea, which were predominated by dinoflagellates. However, algal community was different in DF of the Yellow Sea, and characterized by the dominance of chrysophytes and low OTU richness. The distribution of most abundant HAB species showed positive correlations with TN, BSi, and TOC, suggesting that eutrophication and consequent increase in diatom productivity may have a significant influence on the distribution of HAB species and facilitate the occurrence of HABs. Furthermore, HAB species occurred more abundantly and widely in FN. Our results suggest high potential risks of HABs in the southeast Chinese coast especially in Funing Bay.

RESUMO

Occurring worldwide, blooms of Raphidiopsis raciborskii threaten the use of water resources especially in tropical and subtropical waterbodies. Its high flexibility in the uses of light and macronutrients (C, N, P) frustrates any bloom prediction and control based on macronutrients regulation. To identify the critical factors promoting periodic blooms of R. raciborskii, the trends of meteorological, hydrodynamic, physical, and chemical variables (including macro- and micronutrients: N, P, Fe) were analyzed in a Chinese tropical large reservoir (Dashahe reservoir) over five years. It was hypothesized that Fe availability, mediated by the mixing pattern of the reservoir, played a crucial role in the periodic blooms of the cyanobacterium. To have a more complete understanding, the effects of Fe on growth of a local R. raciborskii strain were tested in a monoculture experiment. The biomass and relative abundance of R. raciborskii in the reservoir showed a clear seasonal trend, with relative abundance > 50% in summer/autumn (July to October). Three habitat types along a dominance gradient were identified in the reservoir and 17 variables were used to compare them. Statistical analysis and habitat comparison showed that temperature and stratification, dissolved Fe and N concentrations in the epilimnion, and dissolved Fe and oxygen concentrations in the hypolimnion were the critical factors driving the dynamics of R. raciborskii in the study reservoir. The habitat dominated by R. raciborskii was characterized by a relatively low availability of macro resources (Zeu/Zm < 1, SRP < 0.01 mg/L, DIN < 0.3 mg/L) and by a high Fe availability supplemented from hypoxic hypolimnion. The dependence of growth on Fe concentration increase was confirmed in culture where the maximum was reached at 0.689 mg Fe /L. Our results suggest that a high Fe bioavailability, also originating from the hypoxic hypolimnion, influences the dynamics R. raciborskii and favors the blooms of the species. As a consequence, Fe concentrations in the water column as well as oxygen measurements along the water column should be routinely included in the monitoring programs aimed at predicting and controlling R. raciborskii blooms.

RESUMO

Nutrient storage is considered a critical strategy for algal species to adapt to a fluctuating nutrient supply. Luxury phosphorus (P) uptake into storage of polyphosphate extends the duration of cyanobacterial dominance and their blooms under P deficiency. However, it is unclear whether nitrogen (N) storage in the form of cyanophycin supports persistent cyanobacterial dominance or blooms in the tropics where N deficiency commonly occurs in summer. In this study, we examined genes for cyanophycin synthesis and degradation in Raphidiopsis raciborskii, a widespread and dominant cyanobacterium in tropical waters; and detected the cyanophycin accumulation under fluctuating N concentrations and its ecological role in the population dynamics of the species. The genes for cyanophycin synthesis (cphA) and degradation (cphB) were highly conserved in 21 out of 23 Raphidiopsis strains. This suggested that the synthesis and degradation of cyanophycin are evolutionarily conserved to support the proliferation of R. raciborskii in N-fluctuating and/or deficient conditions. Isotope 15N-NaNO3 labeling experiments showed that R. raciborskii QDH7 always commenced to synthesize and accumulate cyanophycin under fluctuating N conditions, regardless of whether exogenous N was deficient. When the NO3--N concentration exceeded 1.2 mg L-1, R. raciborskii synthesized cyanophycin primarily through uptake of 15N-NaNO3. However, when the NO3--N concentration was below 1.0 mg L-1, cyanophycin-based N was derived from unlabeled N2, as evidenced by increased dinitrogenase activity. Cells grown under NO3--N < 1.0 mg L-1 had lower cyanophycin accumulation rates than cells grown under NO3--N > 1.2 mg L-1. Our field investigation in a large tropical reservoir underscored the association between cyanophycin content and the population dynamics of R. raciborskii. The cyanophycin content was high in N-sufficient (NO3--N > 0.45 mg L-1) periods, and decreased in N-deficient summer. In summer, R. raciborskii sustained a relatively high biomass and produced few heterocysts (< 1%). These findings indicated that cyanophycin-released N, rather than fixed N, supported persistent R. raciborskii blooms in N-deficient seasons. Our study suggests that the highly adaptive strategy in a N2-fixing cyanobacterial species makes mitigating its bloom more difficult than previously assumed.

RESUMO

In this work, chitosan/lignosulfonate composite micelles (CS-LS) were successfully prepared through polyelectrolyte self-assembly. Curcumin was encapsulated in CS-LS to obtain CUR-CS-LS. The results showed that the average diameter of CS-LS and CUR-CS-LS were 239 nm and 286 nm, respectively. The results show that the aromatic rings of lignosulfonate are assembled into the hydrophobic core of micelles through π-π interactions, and chitosan binds outside the hydrophobic core as a hydrophilic shell through electrostatic interactions. Curcumin is encapsulated in the hydrophobic core through hydrophobic interactions. Encapsulation improves the thermal stability and pH stability of curcumin. Compared with free curcumin, the retention efficiency of curcumin in CUR-CS-LS increased by approximately 6.66 and 6.46 times under the same heat treatment and pH conditions, respectively. Encapsulation also increases the antioxidant activity of curcumin in aqueous solution. In addition, the release mechanism of curcumin is diffusion and matrix swelling. These findings explain that CS-LS may be an effective promising delivery system for encapsulating hydrophobic biologically active substances.

RESUMO

Raphidiopsis raciborskii (previously Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii) can produce cylindrospermopsin (CYN) which is of great concern due to its considerable toxicity to human and animals. Its CYN-producing (toxic) and non-CYN-producing (non-toxic) strains co-exist commonly in natural water bodies, while how their relative dominance is regulated has not been addressed. In this study, we combined field investigation with laboratory experiments to assessed the relationship between toxic and non-toxic R. raciborskii abundances under different nutrient levels. The rpoC1- and cyrJ-based qPCR was applied for quantifying total and toxic R. raciborskii abundances, respectively. The field survey showed that toxic R. raciborskii was detected in 97 of 115 reservoirs where its proportion ranged from 0.3% to 39.7% within the R. raciborskii population. Both total and toxic R. raciborskii abundances increased significantly with trophic level of these reservoirs, consistent with our monoculture and co-culture experiments showing in an increase in R. raciborskii growth with increasing nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P) concentrations. In the monoculture experiments, growth rates of non-toxic and toxic strains from Australia or China were not significantly different under the same culture conditions. On the other hand, in the co-culture experiments, the toxic strains displayed a significantly faster growth than non-toxic strains under nutrient-replete conditions, resulting in an obvious shift toward the dominance by toxic strains from day 3 to the end of the experiments, regardless of the strain originating from Australia or China. The reverse was found under N- or P-limited conditions. Our results indicated that the toxic strains of R. raciborskii have a competitive advantage relative to the non-toxic strains in a more eutrophic world. In parallel to an increase in dominance, both toxic strains grown in the mixed population significantly increased CYN production under nutrient-replete conditions as compared to nutrient-limited conditions, suggesting that CYN may be of significance for ecological advantage of toxic R. raciborskii. These results highlight the importance of nutrient availability in regulating abundances and strain dominance of two genotypes of R. raciborskii. Our findings demonstrated that elevated nutrients would favor the growth of CYN-producing R. raciborskii and CYN production, leading to more blooms with higher toxicity at global scale.

RESUMO

Background: Diastasis rectus abdominis (DRA) is one of the common complications during pregnancy and post-partum, which has psychological and physical effects on post-partum women. Acupuncture, a worldwide alternative therapy, has attracted wide attention in preventing and treating diseases related to pregnancy and childbirth. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture combined with physical training in treating post-partum rectus muscle dissociation. Methods: This is a randomized, controlled trial of DRA in post-partum conducted at Hangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine Affiliated with Zhejiang University of Chinese Medicine. The primary purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture and physical training on DRA in post-partum women. The study will be conducted from March 2022 to March 2023. The acupuncture group received acupuncture and physical training (n = 48), the sham acupuncture group received sham acupuncture and physical training (n = 48), and the physical training group received physical training (n = 48). These experiments perform once/day, five times a week for 2 weeks, followed up for half a year after the end of the course of treatment. Our tests perform a course of treatment, which includes a total of 10 consecutive treatments. Furthermore, the patient will be followed up for half a year after the treatment. Primary and secondary indicators, including inter recti distance (IRD), linea alba (LA) tension, the MOS item short-form health survey (SF-36), short-form McGill pain questionnaire-2 (SF-MPQ-2), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), leeds dyspepsia questionnaire (LDQ), menstrual distress questionnaire (MDQ), 10 items of edinburgh post-natal depression scale (EPDS-10), the modified body self-image scale (MBIS), international consultation incontinence questionnaire short-form (ICIQ-SF) and hernia-related quality-of-life survey (HerQles), which will be evaluated before and after treatment and half a year after treatment. Adverse events and side effects during each treatment will be collected and recorded. Discussion: There is evidence that acupuncture and physical training can treat DRA in post-partum. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in post-partum with DRA.

RESUMO

Interactions between Scrippsiella acuminata and three diatoms, Chaetoceros curvisetus, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and Skeletonema dohrnii, were investigated using bi-algal co-cultures and cell-free and sonicated-cell filtrates in this study. Volatile aldehydes in sonicated filtrates of the three diatoms were analyzed by GC/MS. Furthermore, effects of 2E, 4E-decadienal (2,4-D) on the growth and the photosynthetic efficiency of the four microalgal species were studied. The growth of Sc. acuminata was significantly inhibited by the three diatoms in all co-cultures, and the inhibitory effects were higher under nutrient-rich conditions. Both cell-free and sonicated-cell filtrates of the three diatoms showed significant inhibitions on the growth of Sc. acuminata, which highlighted that diatoms produce allelopathic compounds not only to the surrounding environments but also inside the cells. Fifteen aldehydes were detected in the sonicated-cell filtrates of the three diatoms, and 5, 5, and 12 types of aldehydes were detected in C. curvisetus, P. tricornutum, and Sk. dohrnii, respectively. Polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) composition differed among the three diatom species. Phenylglyoxal (C8H6O2) dominated in C. curvisetus, 2,4-D (C10H16O) predominated in P. tricornutum, and high proportions of 2-hexenal (C6H10O), 2E, 4E-heptadienal (C7H10O), and 2,4-D were detected in Sk. dohrnii. 2,4-D showed significantly inhibitory effects on the growth of algal cells including diatoms themselves in a dose-dependent manner, and photosynthetic efficiency was significantly decreased as well. Sc. acuminata was the most sensitive species. The 96 h EC50 values of 2,4-D on the growth of the four microalgae were 1.64 µmol/L for Sc. acuminata, 3.09 µmol/L for C. curvisetus, 4.93 µmol/L for P. tricornutum, and 8.54 µmol/L for Sk. dohrnii, respectively. The results suggest that PUAs produced by diatoms may help them to take the competitive advantages in phytoplankton community, and thus to sustain diatom-dominated community structure in nutrient rich coastal waters.

RESUMO

Changes in water level and flushing rate directly affect to a large extent the biomass of harmful cyanobacteria, and drive the shift of phytoplankton composition between cyanobacteria dominance/non-dominance in eutrophic waters. Here, we gave a theoretical formula describing the combinational effect of water level and flushing rate on cyanobacterial biomass in eutrophic and well-mixed waters. We also formulated an equation predicting the water level and flushing rate at which cyanobacteria become non-dominating in such water columns. The formulae were confronted with field observations of a low-light adapted cyanobacterium in a large coastal reservoir of southern China. Our formulae demonstrate that water level and flushing rate have an interactive effect on the equilibrium biomass of low-light adapted cyanobacteria in mixed and turbid waters. The formulae were well fitted to the field observation of Raphidiopsis raciborskii population in the reservoir during four dry seasons. In agreement with the theoretical analysis, multiple regression analysis also showed that the interaction between water level and flushing rate is able to interpret the variation of R. raciborskii biomass in the water column. The two formulae are applicable for predicting the response of low-light adapted cyanobacteria to local climate change. Our findings have practical significance in designing measures against the dominance of low light-adapted cyanobacteria in reservoirs.

RESUMO

Protein is an indispensable part of life. It provides nutrition for human body and flavor for food. The role of protein depends largely on the functional properties of the protein. Therefore, the elucidation of protein structure and functional properties needs to be further explored. The effects of structural and functional properties of proteins under different ultrasonic treatment conditions were reviewed. The structural changes of protein were studied by hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry combined with fluorescence spectrometry and proteomics, and the mechanism of action was determined. The glycation site, the glycation degree, and the glycation characteristics of different sugars were determined. The protein was modified by ultrasound, and the influence of protein structure, physicochemical properties, protein glycation characteristics, and the action mechanism were analyzed by biological mass spectrometry.

RESUMO

The widespread propagation of beauty ideals has made their influence inescapable for women worldwide. Numerous studies have suggested the negative consequences of the internalization of beauty ideals. However, researchers have mostly focused on Western cultures, with only a few studies addressing China. Given that Chinese traditional Confucian values emphasize more reproduction and family duties of women, women suffer more pressures in China. However, not all women experience and respond to cultural practices in the same way. The present study aimed to examine the mechanism underlying the link between the internalization of beauty ideals and ambivalent sexism and the differences in this link among subgroups of Chinese women. Data were collected from a sample of 293 (146 heterosexual women, 147 sexual minority women). The results showed that the associations of the internalization of beauty ideals with hostile sexism and benevolent sexism were mediated by the objectification of women. Furthermore, the link between the internalization of beauty ideals and the objectification of women depended on women's sexual orientation. More specifically, for lesbian and bisexual women but not heterosexual women, the internalization of beauty ideals was positively associated with the objectification of women. The present study addressed a major gap by examining how and for whom the internalization of beauty ideals was associated with increased hostile sexism and benevolent sexism among Chinese women. Sociocultural factors and implications are discussed.
