RESUMO

Standard catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) and thrombus aspiration are considered potentially promising approaches for reopening the embolism-related pulmonary artery in patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) with high thrombotic burden and deteriorating hemodynamics, especially in those for whom systemic thrombolysis is contraindicated or has failed. However, the constrained accessibility of dedicated catheters has impeded the potential benefits of standard CDT in developing countries. The Guidezilla guide extension catheter (GEC) with a larger diameter and extended length is widely used in challenging coronary anatomy. Nevertheless, there have been few reports on the application of the Guidezilla GEC as a novel option for patients with massive PE when dedicated catheters and surgical thrombectomy are not available. In this case report, we demonstrated that thrombus aspiration and in situ thrombolysis through the Guidezilla GEC are applicable to patients with PE in whom systemic thrombolysis is contraindicated, resulting in successful reperfusion and positive clinical outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory infection (SARI), a significant global health concern, imposes a substantial disease burden. In China, there is inadequate data concerning the monitoring of respiratory pathogens, particularly bacteria, among patients with SARI. Therefore, this study aims to delineate the demographic, epidemiological, and aetiological characteristics of hospitalised SARI patients in Central China between 2018 and 2020. METHODS: Eligible patients with SARI admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2020 were included in this retrospective study. Within the first 24 h of admission, respiratory (including sputum, nasal/throat swabs, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, thoracocentesis fluid, etc.), urine, and peripheral blood specimens were collected for viral and bacterial testing. A multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostic approach was used to identify human influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, human bocavirus, human coronavirus, human metapneumovirus, and rhinovirus. Bacterial cultures of respiratory specimens were performed with a particular focus on pathogenic microorganisms, including S. pneumoniae, S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, Strep A, H. influenzae, A. baumannii, and E. coli. In cases where bacterial culture results were negative, nucleic acid extraction was performed for PCR to assay for the above-mentioned eight bacteria, as well as L. pneumophila and M. pneumoniae. Additionally, urine specimens were exclusively used to detect Legionella antigens. Furthermore, epidemiological, demographic, and clinical data were obtained from electronic medical records. RESULTS: The study encompassed 1266 patients, with a mean age of 54 years, among whom 61.6% (780/1266) were males, 61.4% (778/1266) were farmers, and 88.8% (1124/1266) sought medical treatment in 2020. Moreover, 80.3% (1017/1266) were housed in general wards. The most common respiratory symptoms included fever (86.8%, 1122/1266) and cough (77.8%, 986/1266). Chest imaging anomalies were detected in 62.6% (792/1266) of cases, and 58.1% (736/1266) exhibited at least one respiratory pathogen, with 28.5% (361/1266) having multiple infections. Additionally, 95.7% (1212/1266) of the patients were from Henan Province, with the highest proportion (38.3%, 486/1266) falling in the 61-80 years age bracket, predominantly (79.8%, 1010/1266) seeking medical aid in summer and autumn. Bacterial detection rate (39.0%, 495/1266) was higher than viral detection rate (36.9%, 468/1266), with the primary pathogens being influenza virus (13.8%, 175/1266), K. pneumoniae (10.0%, 127/1266), S. pneumoniae (10.0%, 127/1266), adenovirus (8.2%, 105/1266), P. aeruginosa (8.2%, 105/1266), M. pneumoniae (7.8%, 100/1266), and respiratory syncytial virus (7.7%, 98/1266). During spring and winter, there was a significant prevalence of influenza virus and human coronavirus, contrasting with the dominance of parainfluenza viruses in summer and autumn. Respiratory syncytial virus and rhinovirus exhibited higher prevalence across spring, summer, and winter. P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae, and M. pneumoniae were identified at similar rates throughout all seasons without distinct spikes in prevalence. However, S. pneumoniae showed a distinctive pattern with a prevalence that doubled during summer and winter. Moreover, the positive detection rates of various other viruses and bacteria were lower, displaying a comparatively erratic prevalence trend. Among patients admitted to the intensive care unit, the predominant nosocomial bacteria were K. pneumoniae (17.2%, 43/249), A. baumannii (13.6%, 34/249), and P. aeruginosa (12.4%, 31/249). Conversely, in patients from general wards, predominant pathogens included influenza virus (14.8%, 151/1017), S. pneumoniae (10.4%, 106/1017), and adenovirus (9.3%, 95/1017). Additionally, paediatric patients exhibited significantly higher positive detection rates for influenza virus (23.9%, 11/46) and M. pneumoniae (32.6%, 15/46) compared to adults and the elderly. Furthermore, adenovirus (10.0%, 67/669) and rhinovirus (6.4%, 43/669) were the primary pathogens in adults, while K. pneumoniae (11.8%, 65/551) and A. baumannii (7.1%, 39/551) prevailed among the elderly, indicating significant differences among the three age groups. DISCUSSION: In Central China, among patients with SARI, the prevailing viruses included influenza virus, adenovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus. Among bacteria, K. pneumoniae, S. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, and M. pneumoniae were frequently identified, with multiple infections being very common. Additionally, there were substantial variations in the pathogen spectrum compositions concerning wards and age groups among patients. Consequently, this study holds promise in offering insights to the government for developing strategies aimed at preventing and managing respiratory infectious diseases effectively.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical effect of fast needling (without needle retaining), needle retaining acupuncture combined with occupational therapy and simple occupational therapy for hand dysfunction of spastic cerebral palsy in children. METHODS: A total of 75 children with spastic cerebral palsy were randomly divided into an occupational therapy group (25 cases), a fast needling group (25 cases, 1 case dropped out) and a needle retaining group (25 cases, 1 case dropped out). The patients in the occupational therapy group were only treated with occupational therapy for 20 min each time. The patients in the fast needling group were treated with acupuncture (without needle retaining) combined with occupational therapy, and the needle retaining group was treated with acupuncture (needle retaining) combined with occupational therapy, and acupuncture was taken at Hegu (LI 4), Houxi (SI 3), Yuji (LU 10), Waiguan (SJ 5), Jianyu (LI 15) and so on. The needles were retained for 30 min in patients of the needle retaining group. All the above treatments were performed once a day, 5 times a week for 12 weeks. The scores of fine motor function measure (FMFM) and Peabody developmental motor scale 2 (PDMS-2) were observed in patients of the three groups before and after treatment, and the safety of the fast needling group and the needle retaining group was compared. RESULTS: After treatment, the scores of FMFM and PDMS-2 in patients of the three groups were higher than those before treatment (P<0.01), and the scores of FMFM and PDMS-2 in the fast needling group and the needle retaining group were higher than those in the occupational therapy group (P<0.05, P<0.01). The incidence of acupuncture abnormalities in the fast needling group was 0.3% (5/1 440), which was lower than 1.4% (20/1 440) in the needle retaining group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture combined with occupational therapy has better clinical effect than occupational therapy alone in improving hand dysfunction in children with spastic cerebral palsy, and there is no statistical difference in effect between fast needling acupuncture and needle retaining acupuncture, but fast needling has better safety than needle retaining acupuncture.

RESUMO

Cold agglutinins(CA),autoantibodies against the antigen I or i on the surface of red blood cells, are mainly of IgM class, and the majority have κ light chains. They can lead to red blood cell agglutination at decreased body temperature and are usually associated with infections, drug reactions, autoimmune diseases, and hematological malignancies. However, solid tumors with CA are rare.We reported two cases of CA in the peripheral blood of patients with solid tumors.Peripheral complete blood cell count of the patients at admission showed reduced erythrocyte count and hematocrit, mismatching between erythrocyte count and hemoglobin, abnormally elevated levels of mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean cell hemoglobin concentration.Peripheral blood smear showed erythrocyte aggregation. After the sample was preheated at 37 ℃ for 30 min,the reversibility of red blood cell aggregation was observed, and the erythrocyte parameters were corrected.

RESUMO

In recent years, the pursuit of high-performance nano-flexible electronic composites has led researchers to focus on nanocellulose-graphene composites. Nanocellulose has garnered widespread interest due to its exceptional properties and unique structure, such as renewability, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. However, nanocellulose materials are deficient in electrical conductivity, which limits their applications in flexible electronics. On the other hand, graphene boasts remarkable properties, including a high specific surface area, robust mechanical strength, and high electrical conductivity, making it a promising carbon-based nanomaterial. Consequently, research efforts have intensified in exploring the preparation of graphene-nanocellulose flexible electronic composites. Although there have been studies on the application of nanocellulose and graphene, there is still a lack of comprehensive information on the application of nanocellulose/graphene in flexible electronic composites. This review examines the recent developments in nanocellulose/graphene flexible electronic composites and their applications. In this review, the preparation of nanocellulose/graphene flexible electronic composites from three aspects: composite films, aerogels, and hydrogels are first introduced. Next, the recent applications of nanocellulose/graphene flexible electronic composites were summarized including sensors, supercapacitors, and electromagnetic shielding. Finally, the challenges and future directions in this emerging field was discussed.

RESUMO

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, and repetitive or stereotyped behaviors. Previous studies have reported altered brain connectivity in ASD children compared to typically developing children. In this study, we investigated the diversity of connectivity patterns between children with ASD and typically developing children using phase lag entropy (PLE), a measure of the variability of phase differences between two time series. We also developed a novel wavelet-based PLE method for the calculation of PLE at specific scales. Our findings indicated that the diversity of connectivity in ASD children was higher than that in typically developing children at Delta and Alpha frequency bands, both within brain regions and across hemispheric brain regions. These findings provide insight into the underlying neural mechanisms of ASD and suggest that PLE may be a useful tool for investigating brain connectivity in ASD.

RESUMO

Aim: This study investigated the effectiveness and prospect of applying virtual simulation operation (VSO) as a novel teaching tool in clinical skill and operation courses. Methods: A comparative test and survey study on the teaching effect of VSO was conducted with the clinical skill and operation course as the test course. The test group students received offline courses combined with online VSO practice. In contrast, the control group students received offline courses combined with instructional video review. The two groups were assessed using the Chinese medical school clinical medicine professional level test and a questionnaire survey. Results: The test group students scored significantly higher than the control group in the skills test (score difference: 3.43, 95% CI: 2.05-4.80) (p < 0.001). Additionally, a significant increase in the percentage of high-and intermediate-score ranges and a decrease in the percentage of low-score ranges was observed (p < 0.001). According to the questionnaire survey, 80.56% of the students were willing to continue using virtual simulation in their subsequent clinical skill and operation learning. Further, 85.19% of the students believed that the VSO is superior because it is unrestricted by time and space and can be performed anywhere and anytime compared to traditional operation training. Conclusion: VSO teaching can improve skills and examination performance. An entirely online operation that does not need special equipment can break through the spatiotemporal limitations of traditional skills courses. VSO teaching also suits the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation. Virtual simulation, a new teaching tool, has good application prospects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The error-proneness in the preanalytical and postanalytical stages is higher than that in the analytical stage of the total testing process. However, preanalytical and postanalytical quality management has not received enough attention in medical laboratory education and tests in clinical biochemistry courses. METHODS/APPROACH: Clinical biochemistry teaching program aim to improve students' awareness and ability of quality management according to international organization for standardization 15,189 requirements. We designed a student-centred laboratory training program, according to case-based learning that included 4 stages: "establish an overall testing process based on the patient's clinical indicator, clarify principles, improve operational skills, and review process and continuous improvement". The program was implemented in our college during the winter semesters of 2019 and 2020. A total of 185 undergraduate students majoring in medical laboratory science participated in the program as a test group, and the other 172 students were set up as the control group and adopted the conventional method. The participants were asked to finish an online survey to evaluate the class at the end. RESULTS/OUTCOMES: The test group had significantly better examination scores not only in experimental operational skills (89.27 ± 7.16 vs. 77.51 ± 4.72, p < 0.05 in 2019 grade, 90.31 ± 5.35 vs. 72.87 ± 8.41 in 2020 grade) but also in total examination (83.47 ± 6.16 vs. 68.90 ± 5.86 in 2019 grade, 82.42 ± 5.72 vs. 69.55 ± 7.54 in 2020 grade) than the control group. The results of the questionnaire survey revealed that the students in the test group better achieved classroom goals than those in the control group (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The new student-centred laboratory training program based on case-based learning in clinical biochemistry is an effective and acceptable strategy compared with the conventional training program.

RESUMO

Lignin has been regarded as a potential natural sun screening agent. However, the dark color of traditional industrial lignin hinders its application in the field of skincare. In this study, a green and facile approach was developed to extract light-colored lignin. p-Toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) was used to separate lignin and fibers from Kenaf stalks. During the isolation of lignin, formaldehyde was added to preserve the ß-O-4 bonds of lignins in the form of stable acetals. The obtained lignin was further employed to prepare nanoparticles (LNPs) as sunscreen additives. After adding 4 wt% LNPs, the SPF values of the cream increased from 7.05 to 27.84. The residual fibers from the Kenaf stalks can be utilized for papermaking as the raw materials. by mixing them with softwood pulp to reduce the consumption of commercial pulp. With the addition of 5 wt% residual fibers in commercial softwood pulp, the produced paper showed better mechanical properties. The ring crush strength index and tear index of the samples increased from 2.49 N·m/g and 4.63 mN·m2/g to 2.62 N·m/g and 4.75 mN·m2/g, respectively. This study paved a way for the comprehensive utilization of Kenaf stalks towards not only papermaking but also daily chemical products.

RESUMO

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a great impact on the traditional teaching mode (Lecture-based Learning, LBL) and laboratory teaching. To address this challenge, the researchers conducted online Problem-based learning (PBL) teaching and virtual simulation laboratory teaching through DingTalk, and evaluated the effectiveness of this method in teaching clinical biochemistry. Methods: With the method of cluster sampling, the researchers randomly selected 60 students from two classes of the Class 2019 as the experimental group for this prospective experimental study. The theory class was taught online PBL through DingTalk, and experimental lectures were given by virtual simulation. After the experimental teaching, students were assessed for theory and operation. Self-administered questionnaires were administered through DingTalk. 65 students from our 2018 medical laboratory class were randomly selected as the control group, and offline LBL and traditional experimental teaching methods were used. Examination results were obtained through teaching portfolios. Results: The experimental group had significantly better examination scores in theoretical knowledge and experimental operational skills than the control group (87.45 ± 5.91 vs. 83.52 ± 9.94, P = 0.0095; 87.08 ± 12.42 vs. 80.18 ± 14.04, P = 0.0044). The results of the questionnaire survey revealed that the experimental group was more receptive to the DingTalk-PBL teaching method and virtual simulation laboratory teaching. Moreover, this hybrid teaching method was more effective in promoting basic knowledge understanding (95.0%, 57/60), facilitating the mastery of operational skills (93.3, 56/60), cultivating interest in learning (96.7%, 58/60), training clinical thinking (95.0%, 57/60), improving communication skills (95.0%, 57/60), and enhancing self-learning ability (91.7%, 55/60) and was more satisfying than traditional teaching method (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: The DingTalk-based PBL method combined with virtual simulation experiments was an effective and acceptable teaching strategy during the pandemic compared with the traditional teaching method.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of standardized quality control management on the rehabilitation of children with palsy in Ningbo City. METHODS: In this retrospective study, a total of 400 pediatric patients requiring rehabilitation therapy admitted to Ningbo Rehabilitation Hospital from July 2017 to May 2021, were selected as the research subjects. Pediatric patients were divided into an observation group (standardized model) and a control group (routine model) based on the different quality management models. The rehabilitation efficacy, nursing quality, negative emotion, satisfaction, DQ scores, ADL scores, PDI scores, MDI scores, compliance rate, complaint rate of nursing, and incidence of adverse events were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The rehabilitation efficacy in the observation group was better than that in the control group (P<0.05). Compared to the control group, the nursing quality score and satisfaction rate were higher, and the negative emotion score was lower in the observation group (all P<0.05). DQ scores, ADL scores, PDI scores, and MDI scores in the observation group were higher than the control group (all P<0.05). The statistical differences were observed in the compliance rate, complaint rate in nursing, and incidence of adverse events between the two groups (all P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The standardized quality control management enhanced the rehabilitation efficacy, promoted the nursing quality, improved the clinical effects, increased the satisfaction rate, and decreased the negative emotions in pediatric patients.

RESUMO

Background: Blood gas analyzers (BGAs) and dry biochemistry analyzers for potassium and sodium are based on direct electrode methods, and both involve glucose oxidase for glucose detection. However, data are lacking regarding whether the results of the two assay systems can be used interchangeably. In addition, there remains controversy over the consistency between BGA-measured hemoglobin and complete blood count analyzer data. Here, we compared the consistency of sodium, potassium, glucose, and hemoglobin levels measured by BGA and dry chemistry and complete blood count analyzers. Methods: Data from two teaching hospitals, the Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital (ZRY) and the Qianfoshan Hospital (QY), were retrospectively analyzed based on dry biochemistry and complete blood count analyzer results as the reference system (X) and BGA as the experimental system (Y). Plasma was used for biochemical analysis at the ZRY Hospital, and serum at the QY Hospital. Paired data from the respective hospitals were evaluated for consistency, and biases between methods were assessed by simple correlation, Passing-Bablok regression, and Bland-Altman analyses. Results: The correlations of potassium, sodium, glucose, and hemoglobin measured by BGA and dry biochemistry and complete blood count analyzers were high, at 0.9573, 0.8898, 0.9849, and 0.9883 for the ZRY Hospital and 0.9198, 0.8591, 0.9764, and 0.8666, respectively, for the QY Hospital. The results of Passing to Bablok regression analysis showed that the predicted biases at each medical decision level were within clinically acceptable levels for potassium, sodium, glucose, and hemoglobin at the ZRY Hospital. Only the predicted bias of glucose was below the clinically acceptable medical decision levels at the QY Hospital, while potassium, sodium, and hemoglobin were not. Compared with the reference system, the mean bias for BGA measurements at the ZRY Hospital was -0.08 mmol/L (95% confidence interval [CI] -0.091 to -0.069) for potassium, 1.2 mmol/L (95% CI 1.06 to 1.42) for sodium, 0.20 mmol/L (95% CI 0.167 to 0.228) for glucose, and -2.8 g/L for hemoglobin (95% CI -3.14 to -2.49). The mean bias for potassium, sodium, glucose, and hemoglobin at the QY Hospital were -0.46 mmol/L (95% CI -0.475 to -0.452), 3.7 mmol/L (95% CI 3.57 to 3.85), -0.36 mmol/L (95% CI -0.433 to -0.291), and -8.7 g/L (95% CI -9.40 to -8.05), respectively. Conclusion: BGA can be used interchangeably with plasma electrolyte results from dry biochemistry analyzers but does not show sufficient consistency with serum electrolyte results from dry biochemistry analyzers to allow data interchangeability. Good consistency was observed between BGA and plasma or serum glucose results from dry biochemistry analyzers. However, BGA-measured hemoglobin and hematocrit assay results should be treated with caution.

RESUMO

Wastewater treatment is a huge problem facing human beings. The development of recyclable and efficient adsorption materials is of great benefit to solve the problem. Based on the biodegradable cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) derived from biomass resources, the large sized CNFs/PVA composite hydrogel spheres (CV-HSs, 1-3 mm) were successfully prepared by the inverse suspension pellet-forming technology using the polymers as raw materials, and another hydrophobic CNFs/PVA composite aerogel spheres (HCV-ASs) were also obtained by lyophilization and followed silylation of as-prepared CV-HSs. The CV-HSs showed excellent adsorption properties for simulated pollutants, including Cu2+, phenol and aniline in water. The maximum absorption capacity of CV-HSs was 17.22 mmol/g for Cu2+, 176.72 mg/g for phenol and 341.93 mg/g for aniline respectively. The HCV-ASs exhibited good absorption properties for weak polar organic solvents, such as petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and toluene. In summary, two kinds of large-sized CNFs/PVA composite gel spheres were successfully fabricated, and exhibited good adsorption properties for organic pollutants and heavy metal ions, indicating their potential for wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a complication of diabetes mellitus, which is associated with fibrosis and microRNAs (miRs). This study estimated the mechanism of miR-195-5p in endothelial mesenchymal transition (EndMT) and myocardial fibrosis in DCM. After the establishment of DCM rat models, miR-195-5p was silenced by miR-195-5p antagomir. The cardiac function-related indexes diastolic left ventricular anterior wall (LVAW, d), systolic LVAW (d), diastolic left ventricular posterior wall (LVPW, d), systolic LVPW (d), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and fractional shortening (FS) were measured and miR-195-5p expression in myocardial tissue was detected. Myocardial fibrosis, collagen deposition, and levels of fibrosis markers were detected. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were exposed to high glucose (HG) and miR-195-5p was silenced. The levels of fibrosis proteins, endothelial markers, fibrosis markers, EndMT markers, and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-ß1)/Smads pathway-related proteins were measured in HUVECs. The interaction between miR-195-5p and Smad7 was verified. In vivo, miR-195-5p was highly expressed in the myocardium of DCM rats. Diastolic and systolic LVAW, diastolic and systolic LVPW were increased and LVEF and FS were decreased. Inhibition of miR-195-5p reduced cardiac dysfunction, myocardial fibrosis, collagen deposition, and EndMT, promoted CD31 and VE-cadehrin expressions, and inhibited α-SMA and vimentin expressions. In vitro, HG-induced high expression of miR-195-5p and the expression changes of endothelial markers CD31, VE-cadehrin and fibrosis markers α-SMA and vimentin were consistent with those in vivo after silencing miR-195-5p. In mechanism, miR-195-5p downregulation blocked EndMT by inhibiting TGF-ß1-smads pathway. Smad7 was the direct target of miR-195-5p and silencing miR-195-5p inhibited EndMT by promoting Smad7 expression. Collectively, silencing miR-195-5p inhibits TGF-ß1-smads-snail pathway by targeting Smad7, thus inhibiting EndMT and alleviating myocardial fibrosis in DCM.

RESUMO

Objective To explore the feasibility of preheating in 41 ℃ water bath for 30 minutes to correct the red blood cell parameters in the specimens containing high-titer cold agglutinins(CAs). Methods Two specimens containing high-titer CAs were selected during work, and the parameters of complete blood count at room temperature or after preheating in 37 ℃ or 41 ℃ water bath were compared. The smears were stained, and the distribution of red blood cells was observed with a microscope.Further,74 specimens without CAs were collected for complete blood count, and then the test results at room temperature and after preheating at 41 ℃ were compared. Results At room temperature, the specimens containing high-titer CAs showed significantly reduced red blood cell count(RBC)and hematocrit(HCT),abnormally increased mean corpuscular hemoglobin(MCH)and mean cell hemoglobin concentration(MCHC),abnormal percents of hemoglobin(HGB)and RBC,and aggregation of a large number of red blood cells. After being preheated at 37 ℃ for a certain time, the specimens demonstrated obviously improved parameters while still aggregation of a small number of red blood cells. After being preheated at 41 ℃ for 30 minutes, the specimens showed significantly increased RBC,normal HCT,MCH,and MCHC,and evenly distributed red blood cells. The 74 specimens without CAs showed the comparability was ≥80% between room temperature and preheating at 41 ℃ for 30 minutes or 60 minutes. Conclusion We can preheat the specimens containing high-titer CAs in a water bath at 41 ℃ to obtain accurate red blood cell parameters.

Developing green and simple methods for the preparation of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) is of great significance. Herein, a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) system based on choline chloride (ChCl) and citric acid (CA) is employed to pretreat cellulose fibers for the preparation of CNFs. The effect of the pretreatment temperature on the chemo-physical properties of the CNFs is comprehensively investigated. A high CNFs yield of up to 84.19% can be achieved under optimized conditions. The optimal CNFs show a narrow diameter distribution and length up to several microns, high crystallinity and thermal stability, as well as excellent dispersibility in water. Furthermore, semi-transparent and flexible cellulose nanopaper (CNP) was fabricated through a facile vacuum filtration process. The optimal CNP shows high tensile strength (175.15 MPa) and toughness (7.51 MJ/m3). Therefore, this work provides a sustainable and facile approach to fabricate CNFs and CNP, which can be potentially used for various high-tech applications.

RESUMO

In this work, a sustainable and highly efficient approach for preparing bifunctional cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) was proposed through a mixed acid system of sulfuric acid and formic acid (FA). It was found that low-concentration (5-10 wt%) sulfuric acid can significantly improve the hydrolysis efficiency of FA (65-80 wt%), which enabled the highly efficient preparation of CNCs, i.e., the maximum yield of CNCs reached up to 70.65%. The obtained CNCs exhibited a rod-like shape with high crystallinity, and good dispersibility in both water and some organic phases. Moreover, the as-prepared CNCs exhibited high thermal stability, which is much higher than that of the traditionally sulfuric acid hydrolyzed ones. In addition, it was demonstrated that the bifunctional CNCs were able to stabilize various oils to form stable Pickering emulsion gels. Thus, this work provides a promising approach for sustainable preparation of bifunctional CNCs, which may find high-end applications in diverse fields.

RESUMO

The purpose of this review is to summarize and discuss the recent developments in exploring cellulose and its derivatives in the applications of oilfield chemicals for petroleum drilling and exploiting. We begin with a brief introduction of cellulose and its common water-soluble derivatives, such as the carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and amphoteric cellulose. Afterwards, the applications of cellulose derivatives in different petroleum exploitation processes, such as drilling, cementing, and fracturing, are set out in detail. Finally, the application perspectives and challenges of cellulose derivatives for oilfield applications are presented. This work demonstrates that cellulose derivatives have wide application prospects in oilfield industry in the future.
