RESUMO

An isothermal piston is a device that can achieve near-isothermal compression by enhancing the heat transfer area with a porous media. However, flow resistance between the porous media and the liquid is introduced, which cannot be neglected at a high operational speed. Thus, the influence of rotational speed on the isothermal piston compression system is analyzed in this study. A flow resistance mathematical model is established based on the face-centered cubic structure hypothesis. The energy conservation rate and efficiency of the isothermal piston are defined. The effect of rotational speed on resistance is discussed, and a comprehensive energy conservation performance assessment of the isothermal piston is analyzed. The results show that the increasing rate of the resistance work increases significantly proportional to the rotational speed, and the proportion of resistance work in the total work increases gradually and sharply. The total work including compression and resistance cannot be larger than the compression work under adiabatic conditions. The maximum rotational speed is 650 rpm.

Using electron spectroscopy, we investigated the nanoplasma formation process generated in xenon clusters by intense soft x-ray free electron laser (FEL) pulses. We found clear FEL intensity dependence of electron spectra. Multistep ionization and subsequent ionization frustration features are evident for the low FEL-intensity region, and the thermal electron emission emerges at the high FEL intensity. The present FEL intensity dependence of the electron spectra is well addressed by the frustration parameter introduced by Arbeiter and Fennel [New J. Phys. 13, 053022 (2011)].

The differential cross sections and generalized oscillator strengths for the low-lying excitations of the valence-shell 1eg orbital electron in ethane have been measured for the first time at a high incident electron energy of 1500 eV and a scattering angular range of 1.5°-10°. A weak feature, termed X here, with a band center of about 7.5 eV has been observed, which was also announced by the previous experimental and theoretical studies. The dynamic behaviors of the generalized oscillator strengths for the 3s (8.7 eV), 3s+3p (9.31 eV, 9.41 eV), and X (∼7.5 eV) transitions on the momentum transfer squared have been obtained. The integral cross sections of these transitions from their thresholds to 5000 eV have been obtained with the aid of the BE-scaling (B is the binding energy and E is the excitation energy) method. The optical oscillator strengths of the above transitions determined by extrapolating their generalized oscillator strengths to the limit of the squared momentum transfer K2 → 0 are in good agreement with the ones from the photoabsorption spectrum [J. W. Au et al., Chem. Phys. 173, 209 (1993)], which indicates that the present differential cross sections, generalized oscillator strengths, and integral cross sections can serve as benchmark data.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the capability of spectral CT imaging to detect the different stages and angiogenesis of myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: MI was surgically induced in 40 rabbits that were evenly divided into four stages of MI: 6 h (6H), 3 days (3D), 7 days (7D) and 14 days (14D). Spectral CT was performed at 10 s, 1 min and 3 min after intravenous contrast medium administration. CD31 immunohistochemistry was used for the microvessel density (MVD) measurement. Iodine concentrations in the myocardium were measured and normalised to the aorta as nIC. The relationships between infarcted myocardial nIC and MVD were analysed. RESULTS: The nIC of infarct myocardium decreased at 10 s and increased in late-phase CT images. There were significant differences between the 6H and other groups (P ( 6H-3D ) = 0.01, P ( 6H-7D ) = 0.01, P ( 6H-14D ) = 0.00). There was a significant difference in the MVD of infarct myocardium between the two groups except in the 7D and 14D groups (P = 0.08). In the 10-s phase, the nIC of infarct myocardium was negatively correlated with MVD (r = -0.54, P = 0.00), whereas in the late phases, there was a positive correlation between them (r = 0.57, P = 0.00 in the 1-min phase, r = 0.48, P = 0.00 in the 3-min phase). CONCLUSION: Spectral CT imaging of the myocardium can be used to evaluate the different stages and angiogenesis of MI.

Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (IHH) preconditioning protects the heart against ischemic injuries. However, little is known about the therapeutic effect of IHH on myocardial infarction (MI). The aim of this study was to test whether IHH treatment influences infarct size and cardiac performance after MI. Seven days after sham operation or left anterior descending coronary artery ligation, male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly exposed to normoxia or one 6-h period each day of IHH (5,000 m) for 14 and 28 days. Echocardiography analysis showed that IHH significantly reduced left ventricular (LV) dilation and improved cardiac performance after 14- or 28-day treatment compared with MI-normoxic groups. The improvement of LV function was further confirmed in isolated perfused MI-IHH hearts. Such protection was associated with attenuated infarct size, myocardial fibrosis, and apoptotic cardiomyocytes. IHH treatment also enhanced coronary flow and phosphorylation of heat shock protein 27 in both sham and MI groups compared with the control groups. In addition, IHH increased the capillary density and vascular endothelial growth factor expression in peri-infarcted zones compared with sham-IHH and MI-normoxic groups. Our data demonstrated for the first time that IHH treatment exerts a therapeutic effect on MI by attenuating progressive myocardial remodeling and improving myocardial contractility. IHH treatment might provide a unique and promising therapeutic approach for ischemic heart diseases.

PURPOSE: Anion exchanger 1 (AE1) is a transmembrane glycoprotein which is abundantly expressed in erythrocyte plasma membrane and mediates the electroneutral exchange of Cl(-) and HCO(3) (-). We previously reported that the AE1 protein was unexpectedly expressed in the gastric and colonic cancer and take part in the carcinogenesis of the cancer cells. The aim of the present study is to determine the potential clinical implications of AE1 expression in gastric carcinoma. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry assay was used to determine the expression of AE1 protein. The expression of AE1 in normal and malignant tissues from 286 patients with early and advanced gastric carcinoma was examined. The correlations of AE1 expression with clinicopathological parameters, including age, tumor size, location and subtypes, expression frequency, survival period and lymph metastasis were assessed by Chi-squared test and t test analysis. RESULTS: AE1 immunoreactivity was negative in normal gastric tissue. Positive immunostaining of AE1 was detected in gastric carcinoma regardless of the location. AE1 was most frequently expressed in the gastric antrum carcinoma compared with gastric body cancer (P = 0.034). Expression of AE1 was significantly associated with bigger tumor size, deeper invasion, shorter survival period, and non-lymph metastasis. In para-cancer tissues of intestinal-type gastric cancer, the expression frequency of AE1 was higher than that in diffuse-type (P = 0.011). CONCLUSION: The results showed a strong association of AE1 expression with the onset and progression of the gastric cancer and that may be helpful for improving the tumor classification and the treatment of cancer.

The tumor suppressor p16 is a negative regulator of the cell cycle, commonly believed to act in the nucleus. We recently found that p16 protein is expressed in the cytoplasm of gastric cancer cells, concomitantly with anion exchanger 1 (AE1). The aim of this study was to analyze the significance of cytoplasmic p16 and its relationship to AE1 in the progression of gastric cancer. Expression of p16 and AE1 was examined by immunohistochemical analysis in 196 patients; 98 with early gastric cancer and 98 with advanced gastric cancer. The relationship between cytoplasmic p16 and clinicopathological features, and the relationship between cytoplasmic p16 and AE1, were analyzed statistically. Expression of p16 was observed in the nucleus in early stage gastric cancer, but was located mainly in the cytoplasm in advanced cancer cells. Furthermore, cytoplasmic expression of p16 was correlated with AE1 expression, and both were associated with the absence of lymph metastasis in gastric cancer. In conclusion, cytoplasmic immunoreactivity of p16 appears to be a good prognostic indicator in advanced gastric cancer. Co-localization of p16 and AE1 predicts a lack of metastasis in gastric cancer. The role of cytoplasmic p16 and AE1, and the mechanisms involved in the progression of gastric cancer, warrant further investigation.

The FTIR spectra were measured for liquid crystal molecules in CaF2 cell over a temperature range of 40-150 degrees C. The alkyl chain transformed from ordered zigzag-dominated conformation to disordered gaucheness-dominated conformation with increasing temperature. Meanwhile, the degree of freedom of the rotation of the carbonyl group increased, the co-plane interaction between the carbonyl group and the phenyl ring broke, and the conjugation between the C=O bond and the phenyl ring was reduced at the S(CA)* --> S(A) phase transition point, followed by the increase of the plane angle between the two phenyl rings. Due to the surface stability effect of the LC cell, there existed on the cell surface a layer whose structure was independent of the temperature and LC phase. Therefore, the molecules still retained its originally phase property even at temperatures near and above the transition point.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss prognostic factors in microsurgery of intratemporal facial nerve schwannoma. METHODS: Clinical and follow-up materials from 13 cases of facial nerve schwannoma were analyzed retrospectively. Spearman rank-order correlation and nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test from SPSS 10.0 for Windows was used for the analysis. RESULTS: Each of 13 cases was operated on using modern microsurgery. Eleven cases among them received facial nerve reconstruction. One of the 13 cases lost follow-up. Others had no residue or recurrence. The House-Brackmann grades of the cases received facial nerve reconstruction were II through V. Spearman rank-order correlation showed the postoperative facial nerve function was correlated with the preoperative duration of facial nerve paralysis (r = 0.925, P = 0.000) and the preoperative facial nerve function(r = 0.712, P = 0.021). Mann-Whitney U test showed that the tumor position had no effect on the postoperative facial nerve function (P = 0.889). CONCLUSIONS: Among most of the patients who received microsurgery of facial nerve schwannoma, facial nerve functions could be restored to great extent. The longer the preoperative duration of facial nerve paralysis or the worse the preoperative facial nerve function, the worse the postoperative facial nerve function in cases who received facial nerve resection and reconstruction. Facial nerve reconstruction was helpful for the patient with facial nerve schwannoma whose facial muscles were denervated but have fibrillation potentials, as well as for the patient whose facial nerve schwannoma intruded internal acoustic canal.

BACKGROUND: Many colorectal carcinomas are resistant to the growth inhibitory response of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) due to alterations of components along the TGF-beta signaling pathway. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of TGF-beta1, TbetaRII and Smad4 in human colorectal carcinoma and their relationships with cancer growth. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization were performed in 38 cases of colorectal carcinoma. RESULTS: Intense signal for TGF-beta1 protein and TGF-beta1 mRNA were found in 71.1% (27/38) and 77.8% (21/27) of colorectal carcinoma, respectively. Intensive TbetaRII mRNA were detected only in 40% (11/27) cancer tissues (p<0.05). 65.8% (25/38) of colorectal carcinoma displayed decreased expression in TbetaRII immunoreactivity staining (p<0.05). Smad4 protein and Smad4 mRNA were reduced in 63.2% (24/38) and 63% (17/27) of tumors, respectively. Smad4 expression was related to tumor differentiation and Duke's stage (p<0.05). Furthermore, TGF-beta1-positive tumors with lymph node metastasis preferentially had significant reduced Smad4 expression (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Down-regulation of TbetaRII as well as the over-expression of TGF-beta1 play a possible role for the escape of colorectal carcinoma from TGF-beta-mediated growth inhibition. Reduced Smad4 is associated with malignancy and progression of colorectal carcinoma.

The optimized molecular structure and vibrational frequencies of 4-mercaptopyridine monomer and dimer were studied by density functional theory using B3LYP method with the 6-311++G(d, p) basis set. On the basis of the calculations, the assignments of vibrational spectra were performed on monomer and dimer, and the change in structure and vibrational spectrum of dimer as well as the intermolecular force of forming dimer were investigated. It was found that the two pyridine ring planes are vertical to each other, and the dimer was formed through H-bonding, which is between the nitrogen on one ring and the hydrogen of SH moieties on another. Furthermore, the structure and vibrational spectrum of the dimer have some changes with respect to those of the monomer.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the difference of galectin-3 and CD44v6 expression between benign and malignant thyroid nodules, and to evaluate their clinical value in distinguishing thyroid cancer from benign thyroid nodules. METHODS: The expression of galectin-3 and CD44v6 was immunohistochemically detected by the ABC method in 143 benign and malignant thyroid nodule samples. RESULTS: Expression of these two markers in benign thyroid nodules: galectin-3 was negative in 10 cases of para-cancer normal tissue and 14 cases of benign nodules found in the other benign thyroid disease. It was weakly positive in 4 of 52 nodular goiter (7.7%). Also it was weakly positive in 2 of 22 follicular adenomas (9.1%). But all three eosinophilic follicular adenomas were diffusely or focally positive for galectin-3. CD44v6 was negative in 10 cases of para-cancer normal tissue, but positive in 4 of 14 nodular lesions found in benign thyroid diseases (28.6%). It was also positive in 16 of 52 nodular goiters (30.8%), and weakly positive in 7 of 22 follicular adenomas (31.8%). The two markers in malignant lesions: galectin-3 was positive in 50 of 52 thyroid adenocarcinoma (96.2%), CD44v6 was positive in 42 of 52 thyroid adenocarcinoma (80.8%). The positive rate of galectin-3 and CD44v6 expression in thyroid cancer was significantly higher than that in benign thyroid nodule and normal tissue (P < 0.001). The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of galectin-3 combined with CD44v6 in differentiating benign from malignant thyroid nodule were 80.8%, 93.4%, 88.8%; they were 96.2%, 90.1%, 92.3% for Galectin-3 alone. CONCLUSION: The immunohistochemical expression of galectin-3 and CD44v6 by the ABC method is significantly higher in thyroid cancers than in benign thyroid nodules, especially galectin-3 in thyrocyte being helpful in differentiating benign thyroid nodule from thyroid cancer.

PURPOSE: Reduced expression of the transforming growth factor beta receptor type II (TGF beta RII), a key inhibitor of epithelial cell growth and tumor suppressor gene, was reported frequently in many types of tumors including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study explored the significance of the TGF beta RII gene in NSCLC carcinogenesis. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: With 43 independent pairs of tumor and paracarcinoma tissue samples from patients with primary NSCLC, we carried out PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis screening for DNA variants over the coding sequence of the TGF beta RII gene, immunohistochemical assay of TGF beta RII expression, methylation-specific PCR analysis, and semiquantitative reverse transcription-PCR. RESULTS: The PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis did not detect variation in the whole coding sequence of the TGF beta RII gene, but the immunohistochemistry experiment revealed reduced or lost expression of the gene in 44% (19 of 43) of the tumor samples. The methylation analysis on the 19 pairs detected the frequent occurrence of methylated TGF beta RII promoter in tumor tissues, whereas most of the paracarcinoma tissues were free of methylation. The reduced TGF beta RII expression was highly significantly associated with the methylation event (P < 10(-4)). The reverse transcription-PCR analysis demonstrated a clear agreement between reduced TGF beta RII expression and decreased mRNA level of the gene in the tumor tissue samples. CONCLUSIONS: TGF beta RII plays an important role as a tumor suppressor in NSCLC carcinogenesis. The defective expression may serve as one of most important molecular mechanisms in explaining progression of the disease. In particular, aberrant 5' CpG methylation of the gene has explained the down-regulation of the gene at a transcriptional level.
