RESUMO

To prevent anastomotic leakage and other postoperative complications after laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery, a protective ileostomy is often used. However, the necessity of performing ileostomy after laparoscopic rectal cancer remains controversial. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the benefit of ileostomy on wound infection after laparoscopic rectal cancer. The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PubMed were used to retrieve all related documents up to September 2023. Completion of the trial literature was submitted once the eligibility and exclusion criteria were met and the literature quality assessment was evaluated. This study compared the post-operative post-operative complications of an ileostomy with that of non-ileostomy in a laparoscope. We used Reman 5.3 to analyse meta-data. Controlled studies were evaluated with ROBINS-I. The meta-analyses included 525 studies, and 5 publications were chosen to statistically analyse the data according to the classification criteria. There was no statistically significant difference in the rate of postoperative wound infections among ostomate and nonostomate (odds ratio [OR], 1.79; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.66, 4.84; p = 0.25). In 5 trials, the incidence of anastomotic leak was increased after surgery in nonostomate patients (OR, 0.26; 95% CI, 0.12, 0.57; p = 0.0009). Two studies reported no significant difference in the length of operation time when nonstomal compared to stomal operations in patients with rectal cancer (mean difference, 0.87; 95% CI, -2.99, 4.74; p = 0.66). No significant difference was found in the rate of wound infection and operation time after operation among the two groups, but the incidence of anastomosis leak increased after operation. Protective ileostomy after laparoscopic rectal cancer was effective in reducing the risk of anastomotic leakage in patients, and we found no additional risk of infection. We cautiously conclude that protective ileostomy is active and necessary for patients with a high risk of anastomotic leakage after surgery, which needs to be further confirmed by high-quality studies with larger samples.

This meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of microinvasive and open operations on postoperative wound complications in low rectal carcinoma patients. Research on limited English has been conducted systematically in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science. The date up to the search was in August 2023. Following review of the classification and exclusion criteria for this research and the evaluation of its quality in the literature, there were a total of 266 related papers, which were reviewed for inclusion in the period from 2004 to 2017. A total of 1774 cases of low rectal cancer were enrolled. Of these 913 cases, the laparoscopic operation was performed on 913 cases, while 861 cases were operated on low rectal carcinoma. The overall sample was between 10 and 482. Five trials described the efficacy of laparoscopy have lower risk than open on postoperative wound infection in patients with low rectal cancer (OR, 0.72;95 % CI, 0.48,1.09 p = 0.12). Three studies results showed that the anastomotic leak was not significantly different between open and laparoscopy (OR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.58,1.26 p = 0.44). Six surgical trials in low rectal cancer patients reported haemorrhage, and five cases of surgical time were reported, with laparoscopy having fewer bleeding compared with open surgery (MD, -188.89; 95% CI, -341.27, -36.51 p = 0.02). Compared with laparoscopy, the operation time was shorter for the open operation (MD, 33.06; 95% CI, 30.56, 35.57 p < 0.0001). Overall, there is no significant difference between laparoscopy and open surgery in terms of incidence of infection and anastomosis leak. However, the rate of haemorrhage in laparoscopy is lower,and operation time in open surgery is lower.

Purpose: The emerging epitranscriptomics offers insights into the physiopathological roles of various RNA modifications. The RNA methylase NOP2/Sun domain family member 2 (NSUN2) catalyzes 5-methylcytosine (m5C) modification of mRNAs. However, the role of NSUN2 in corneal epithelial wound healing (CEWH) remains unknown. Here we describe the functional mechanisms of NSUN2 in mediating CEWH. Methods: RT-qPCR, Western blot, dot blot, and ELISA were used to determine the NSUN2 expression and overall RNA m5C level during CEWH. NSUN2 silencing or overexpression was performed to explore its involvement in CEWH both in vivo and in vitro. Multi-omics was integrated to reveal the downstream target of NSUN2. MeRIP-qPCR, RIP-qPCR, and luciferase assay, as well as in vivo and in vitro functional assays, clarified the molecular mechanism of NSUN2 in CEWH. Results: The NSUN2 expression and RNA m5C level increased significantly during CEWH. NSUN2 knockdown significantly delayed CEWH in vivo and inhibited human corneal epithelial cells (HCEC) proliferation and migration in vitro, whereas NSUN2 overexpression prominently enhanced HCEC proliferation and migration. Mechanistically, we found that NSUN2 increased ubiquitin-like containing PHD and RING finger domains 1 (UHRF1) translation through the binding of RNA m5C reader Aly/REF export factor. Accordingly, UHRF1 knockdown significantly delayed CEWH in vivo and inhibited HCEC proliferation and migration in vitro. Furthermore, UHRF1 overexpression effectively rescued the inhibitory effect of NSUN2 silencing on HCEC proliferation and migration. Conclusions: NSUN2-mediated m5C modification of UHRF1 mRNA modulates CEWH. This finding highlights the critical importance of this novel epitranscriptomic mechanism in control of CEWH.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) can distinguish mild cognitive impairment (MCI) from normal controls (NC) in aluminum (Al)-exposed workers, and to explore the association of DKI with cognitive performance and plasma Al concentration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 28 patients with MCI and 25 NC at Al factory were enrolled in this study. All subjects underwent conventional MRI and DKI scans. The mean kurtosis (MK), axial kurtosis (Ka), radial kurtosis (Kr), mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) parameters of the hippocampus, substantia nigra, red nucleus, thalamus, anterior cingulate gyrus, genu and crus of the corpus callosum, frontal, parietal and temporal lobe were measured. To compare the parameters between the two groups, the Mann-Whitney rank sum test was used. The correlation of parameter values with cognitive performance and plasma Al concentration was analyzed using Spearman correlation analysis. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the Z-scores were used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of each parameter. RESULTS: Compared with the NC group, the MK, Ka, Kr, and FA values in the MCI group were significantly decreased, and the MD values were significantly increased (p<0.05). For the diagnosis of MCI, MK in the right hippocampus showed the largest AUC (0.924). The MK, Kr, MD and FA values were correlated with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores, and MK values in the right hippocampus showed the greatest correlation with MoCA scores (r=0.744, p <0.001). Plasma Al in the MCI group was higher than that in the NC group, although there was no significant difference in plasma Al between the two groups (p=0.057). There was no correlation between DKI parameters and plasma Al. CONCLUSION: The DKI method might be a sensitive imaging biomarker to discriminate MCI from NC, and could preliminarily assess the severity of cognitive impairment in Al-exposed workers. MK in the right hippocampus appeared to be the best independent predictor. The mechanism of cognitive decline is an important content of aluminum exposure research. This study indicates that the DKI technique could provide valuable information for the diagnosis of MCI.

OBJECTIVE: Although several studies have identified an association between the rs4784227-cancer susceptibility candidate gene 16 (CASC16) polymorphism and breast cancer, the results remain inconclusive. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the relationship between the rs4784227-CASC16 polymorphism and breast cancer risk. METHODS: Studies were searched in the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochran Library databases until June 10, 2021, to identify all potential literature on rs4784227-CASC16 polymorphism and breast cancer risk association. Fixed-effect or random-effect models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Subgroup analyses, publication bias, and sensitivity analyses were also conducted. RESULTS: Seventeen eligible studies involving 34,719 subjects (18,445 cases and 16,274 healthy controls) from 7 articles were included in the current meta-analysis. The pooled ORs regarding the association between the rs4784227-CASC16 polymorphism and breast cancer risk were statistically significant [T vs C: OR = 1.244, 95% CI = 1.202-1.287; TT vs CT + CC: OR = 1.407, 95% CI = 1.296-1.528; CC vs CT + TT: OR = 0.777, 95% CI = 0.745-0.811; TT vs CC: OR = 1.544, 95% CI = 1.419-1.681; CT vs CC: OR = 1.244, 95% CI = 1.189-1.301]. On subgroup analysis, the rs4784227-CASC16 T/C gene has a certain correlation with breast cancer susceptibility in Asian and North American populations, but no significant risk in the Australian population. CONCLUSION: Our pooled analysis showed a significant association between the rs4784227- (T) allele and breast cancer susceptibility in Asian and North American populations, and intervention with this mutation might be a new therapeutic strategy for breast cancer. However, large-scale and well-designed studies are needed in different populations to further evaluate the role of the rs4784227-CASC16 polymorphism in breast cancer.

KEY MESSAGE: Botrytis cinerea induced expression of 15 LrWRKY genes; overexpression of LrWRKY39 and LrWRKY41a increased resistance and susceptibility, respectively, to B. cinerea in a manner related to SA and JA signaling. WRKY transcription factors (TFs), a large family, play important roles in coping with biotic stresses. Lilium regale Wilson is a lily species with strong resistance to fungi and viruses; however, functional characterization of LrWRKY TFs remains very limited. Here, a total of 25 LrWRKY members were identified from the L. regale transcriptome, and 15 LrWRKY genes were significantly induced by Botrytis cinerea. Based on their structural features, B. cinerea-responsive LrWRKY genes could be classified into six subgroups (Groups I, IIa-d, and III), and sequence alignment showed that 12 LrWRKY proteins have a well-conserved WRKYGQK domain, while 3 LrWRKYs have a variant sequence (WRKYGKK or WRMYEQK). Quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed tissue-specific expression of B. cinerea-responsive LrWRKY genes and their expression profiles in response to defense-related hormones salicylic acid (SA), methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and hydrogen peroxide. LrWRKY39 and LrWRKY41a, which encode two LrWRKY TFs with different three-dimensional (3D) models of the WRKY domain, were cloned, and both proteins were targeted to the nucleus. Overexpression of LrWRKY39 and LrWRKY41a in Arabidopsis thaliana increased the resistance and susceptibility to B. cinerea, respectively, compared to the wild type. Similar results were also observed in tobacco and lily (L. longiflorum 'Snow Queen') by transient transformation analyses. Their distinct roles may be related to changes in the transcript levels of SA-/JA-responsive genes. Our results provide new insights into B. cinerea-responsive LrWRKY members and the biological functions of two different 3D models of LrWRKY TFs in defense responses to B. cinerea infection.

This retrospective study investigated the predictive value of the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score in patients with intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who received transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Nomograms were developed to predict progression-free and overall survival (PFS, OS). The medical data of 228 patients with HCC and treated with TACE were collected. The patients were apportioned to 2 groups according to CONUT score: low or high (<4, ≥4). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using Cox regression for OS and PFS. OS and PFS were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier curve and compared with the log-rank test. Nomograms were constructed to predict patient OS and PFS. The nomograms were evaluated for accuracy, discrimination, and efficiency. The cut-off value of CONUT score was 4. The higher the CONUT score, the worse the survival; Kaplan-Meier curves showed significant differences in OS and PFS between the low and high CONUT score groups (P = 0·033, 0·047). The nomograms including CONUT, based on the prognostic factors determined by the univariate and multivariate analyses, to predict survival in HCC after TACE were generated. The CONUT score is an important prognostic factor for both OS and PFS for patients with intermediate HCC who underwent TACE. The cut-off value of the CONUT score was 4. A high CONUT score suggests poor survival outcomes. Nomograms generated based on the CONUT score were good models to predict patient OS and PFS.

Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. It has been shown that exogenous glutamine (GLN) can inhibit the growth of tumor in vivo, but the relationship between GLN and gastric cancer has not been studied. The gastric cancer bearing mouse model was constructed and taken GLN orally at the same time, and the results found that oral GLN (1 or 2 g/kg/d) significantly inhibited the growth rate of tumor and reduce the weight of tumor tissues. Immunohistochemistry showed that oral GLN significantly reduced the PCNA index, which further proved that GLN could inhibit the growth of tumor cells. At the same time, TUNEL assay showed that oral GLN significantly enhanced the apoptosis levels of tumor cells. In addition, GLN reduced GSH levels in tumor tissues, but increased the levels of GSH in plasma, improved the T-lymphocyte transformation rate and NK cell activity, significantly inhibited the secretion of TNF-α and promoted the secretion of IL-2, thus regulating the immune function in vivo. Further detection of apoptosis pathway showed that oral GLN significantly enhanced the expression of pro-apoptotic factor Bad and inhibited the expression of Bcl-2. Meanwhile, GLN significantly increased the activities of Caspase-3, Caspase-8, caspase-9 and PARP. GSH activator NAC had a similar effect to GLN, which could improve the immune function and activate apoptosis pathway, while GSH inhibitor BSO significantly blocked the regulation of GLN, destroyed the immune balance and inhibited apoptosis, but IL-2 significantly blocked the anti-apoptotic effect of BSO. Therefore, oral GLN can improve immune function and activate apoptosis pathway through GSH, and then inhibit the growth of tumor in vivo.

In plants, genes involved in the Phenylpropanoid/monolignol pathway play important roles in lignin biosynthesis and plant immunity. However, their biological function in Lilium remains poorly characterized. Comparative RNA sequencing of the expression profiles of the monolignol pathway genes from fungi-resistant species Lilium regale after inoculation with Botrytis cinerea was performed. One upregulated caffeoyl-CoA O-methyltransferase gene, LrCCoAOMT, was cloned for functional characterization by reverse genetic methods. LrCCoAOMT encodes a putative protein of 246 amino acids and is highly expressed in stem tissues and responsive to salicylic acid (SA) signaling and B. cinerea infection. LrCCoAOMT was largely directed to the cytoplasm. LrCCoAOMT overexpression in Arabidopsis resulted in an increased lignin deposition in vascular tissues and conferred resistance to B. cinerea infection in transgenic plants. Transient transformation of LrCCoAOMT in nonresistant Lilium sargentiae leaves also identified the defense function to B. cinerea. In addition, transcript levels of genes involved in the monolignol and SA-dependent signaling pathways were altered in transgenic Arabidopsis, suggesting that LrCCoAOMT might play vital roles in the resistance of L. regale to B. cinerea related to the levels of lignin and the regulation of SA signaling. This is the first report to functionally characterize a CCoAOMT gene in Lilium, a potential molecular target for lily molecular improvement.

Recently, the main clinical treatment methods for tumor-associated hemorrhage include systemic therapy, the application of hemostatic drugs, blood transfusion, symptomatic support therapy and endoscopic interventional hemostasis. Endoscopic hemostasis is performed mainly for patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, and the procedures include hardening of the blood vessels and the injection of hemostatic drugs. Surgical hemostasis methods mainly include the surgical ligation of bleeding blood vessels or tumor resection for hemostasis. Interventional hemostasis is a new hemostasis method. With the development of interventional radiology in recent years, transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) can quickly detect and accurately embolize arterial blood vessels. It is the preferred treatment for present tumor-associated hemorrhages.

Iris dichotoma with different flower colors and I. domestica are beardless wild irises belonging to the family Iridaceae that bloom in the summer and have long flowering periods. In this study, we collected three accessions of I. dichotoma with violet, yellow, and white flowers, respectively, in China, and crossed them with I. domestica individuals. The flower color of the hybrids derived from these crosses was categorized into eight groups: violet, purple, brown, orange, red, pink, yellow, and white. From this population, 45 individuals were selected for analysis, and their fully expanded inner and outer perianths were harvested for extraction of anthocyanins. Using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis, 29 anthocyanins were identified by comparing MS and UV-visible spectra and elution order based on published data and guidelines. The 29 anthocyanins were classified into six groups: non-acylated glycosides (3RG, 3RG5G), acetylglycosides (3acRG5G), p-coumaroylglycosides (3pCRG, 3pCRG5G), caffeoylglycosides (3CRG5G), feruloylglycosides (3feRG, 3feRG5G), and acetyl-(p-coumaroyl) glycosides (3ac-pCRG5G). Acylated anthocyanin contents were considerably higher than non-acylated anthocyanin contents in the individuals evaluated, regardless of flower color, except in the yellow-flowered I. dichotoma and its yellow-flowered progeny. We found ten anthocyanins derived from pelargonidin, including pelargonidin 3-O-(caffeoyl)rutinoside-5-O-glucoside (Pg3CRG5G), pelargonidin 3-O-(feruloyl)rutinoside-5-O-glucoside (Pg3feRG5G), and pelargonidin 3-O-(feruloyl)rutinoside (Pg3feRG), that have not yet been reported in other Iris species. Moreover, delphinidin 3-O-(feruloyl) rutinoside-5-O-glucoside (Dp3feRG5G), and delphinidin 3-O-(feruloyl)rutinoside (Dp3feRG) were also characterized for the first time in Iris. Two to five major anthocyanins were detected in the petals of the violet and purple groups, whereas those of the brown group contained three to six anthocyanins. Petals of the orange, red, and pink groups contained two to four major anthocyanins. The total variance explained by the first two principal components (PC) in a PC analysis of the intensities of the compound peaks detected in individuals representing the eight color groups was 44.7%. Individuals were classified into 10 types (A-I to A-X) according to their anthocyanidin composition in the flower petals. Knowledge of the types of anthocyanins determining flower petal color will aid comprehensive understanding of flower color characteristics in hybrid progeny and will contribute to the development of breeding Iris cultivars of diverse flower colors.

The traditional primary culture methods of human normal epithelial cells have disadvantages of low activity of cultured cells, the low cultivated rate and complicated operation. To solve these problems, researchers made many studies on culture process of human normal primary epithelial cell. In this paper, we mainly introduce some methods used in separation and purification of human normal epithelial cells, such as tissue separation method, enzyme digestion separation method, mechanical brushing method, red blood cell lysis method, percoll layered medium density gradient separation method. We also review some methods used in the culture and subculture, including serum-free medium combined with low mass fraction serum culture method, mouse tail collagen coating method, and glass culture bottle combined with plastic culture dish culture method. The biological characteristics of human normal epithelial cells, the methods of immunocytochemical staining, trypan blue exclusion are described. Moreover, the factors affecting the aseptic operation, the conditions of the extracellular environment, the conditions of the extracellular environment during culture, the number of differential adhesion, and the selection and dosage of additives are summarized.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Recently, the pre-treatment platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), which is based on blood parameters, was accepted as a prognostic factor for patients with various cancers. Numerous studies have investigated the prognostic role of the PLR in pancreatic cancer; however, it remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between the pre-treatment PLR and overall survival (OS) in pancreatic cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search of the PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases for relevant studies that explored the prognostic role of the pre-treatment PLR in pancreatic cancer. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) related to OS were pooled using a random effects model. RESULTS: Fourteen retrospective cohort studies involving 2,260 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with low PLR, high PLR was a predictor of shorter OS (HR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.10-1.39, I2 = 74%). CONCLUSIONS: In this meta-analysis, high pre-treatment PLR was a bio-predictor of short OS in patients with pancreatic cancer, suggesting that PLR could be used to predict prognosis of patients with pancreatic cancer before treatment. However, additional well-designed and large-scale studies are necessary.

Some clinical trials demonstrated local resection for clinical T1 rectal cancer was safe and effective. But for clinical T2 rectal cancer, the results were controversial. Neoadjuvant therapy (NT) is proven to reduce the opportunity of advanced rectal cancer recurrence in various researches. The objective of this Meta-Analysis was to evaluate the oncological outcomes of transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) with or without NT comparing with conventional total mesorectal excision (TME) for the treatment of clinical T2 rectal cancer.To search for the relevant studies, an electronic search was done from the databases of Pubmed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library in this meta-analysis. We compared the effectiveness of transanal endoscopic microsurgery with or without NT and standard total mesorectal excision in the treatment of T2 Rectal Cancer. 1RCT and 3nRCTs including 121 TEM patients (TEM + NT: 59, TEM: 62) and 174 TME patients with T2 rectal cancer were retrieved. Compared with TME, there were no significant differences in the outcomes of local recurrence, overall recurrence, overall survival between TEM + NT group. However in compassion with TME, TEM without NT was associated with an increased local recurrence, overall recurrence, and a shorter overall survival, with individual ORs being 3.04 (95% Cl: 1.17-7.90; I2 = 0%), 5.67 (95% Cl: 1.58-20.38; I2 = 0%) and 0.12 (95% Cl: 0.02-0.65; I2 = 0%), respectively. Compared with TME, TEM after NT may be a feasible and safe organ preservative approach for patients with clinical T2 low rectal cancer. But for those without NT, TEM always seem be associated with worse oncological outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammatory parameters, such as the elevator PLR (platelet-lymphocyte ratio), the NLR (neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio) and the platelet count (PLT), have been found to be associated with the prognosis in gastric cancer; however, these results, especially those relating to the PLR, remain inconsistent. So we aimed to evaluate the prognostic role of the PLR in gastric cancer by conducting and presenting the findings of this meta-analysis. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library to evaluate the prognostic value of the PLR in gastric cancer. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Newcastle Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS). The hazard ratio (HR) /Odds Ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence were pooled using a random effects model. A funnel plot based on overall survival was used to evaluate the publication bias. RESULTS: It total, 8 studies comprising 4513 patients with gastric cancer met the pre-setting inclusion criteria. In comparison to the normal PLR, an elevated PLR was correlated with a higher risk of lymph node metastasis with an OR of 1.50 (95% Cl:1.24-1.82; I2 = 17%) and serosal invasion (T3 +T4) risk with an OR of 2.01 (95% Cl: 1.49-2.73; I2 = 55%), and an elevated PLR also increased the advanced stage (III +IV) risk with an OR of 1.99 (95% Cl: 1.60-2.46; I2 = 28%). An elevated PLR was not a reliable predictor for OS with an HR of 0.99 (95% CI: 0.9-1.1; I2 = 12%). CONCLUSIONS: An elevated PLR was correlated with a higher risk of lymph node metastasis, serosal invasion and advanced stage (III +IV) risk in gastric cancer; however, the PLR may not act as a negative predictor for the overall survival of gastric cancer.

Patterns with controllable adhesion on superhydrophobic areas have various biomedical and chemical applications. Electrolyte jet machining technique (EJM), an electrochemical machining method, was firstly exploited in constructing dimples with various profiles on the superhydrophobic Al alloy surface using different processing parameters. Sliding angles of water droplets on those dimples firstly increased and then stabilized at a certain value with the increase of the processing time or the applied voltages of the EJM, indicating that surfaces with different adhesion force could be obtained by regulating the processing parameters. The contact angle hysteresis and the adhesion force that restricts the droplet from sliding off were investigated through experiments. The results show that the adhesion force could be well described using the classical Furmidge equation. On account of this controllable adhesion force, water droplets could either be firmly pinned to the surface, forming various patterns or slide off at designed tilting angles at specified positions on a superhydrophobic surface. Such dimples on superhydrophopbic surfaces can be applied in water harvesting, biochemical analysis and lab-on-chip devices.

Plasma hydrophilizing of superhydrophobic substrates has become an important area of research, for example, superhydrophobic-(super)hydrophilic patterned surfaces have significant practical applications such as lab-on-chip systems, cell adhesion, and control of liquid transport. However, the stability of plasma-induced hydrophilicity is always considered as a key issue since the wettability tends to revert back to the untreated state (i.e. aging behavior). This paper focuses on the stability of plasma treated superhydrophobic surface under different ambient conditions (e.g. temperature and relative humidity). Water contact angle measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are used to monitor the aging process. Results show that low temperature and low relative humidity are favorable to retard the aging process and that pre-storage at low temperature (-10°C) disables the treated surface to recover superhydrophobicity. When the aging is performed in water, a long-lasting hydropholicity is obtained. As the stability of plasma-induced hydrophilcity over a desired period of time is a very important issue, this work will contribute to the optimization of storage conditions of plasma treated superhydrophobic surfaces.

Spontaneous pumpless transportation (SPT) of liquids has generated tremendous demands in microfluidic systems and advanced devices. However, the transportation of nonpolar organic liquids on open platforms underwater remains a challenge because most existing SPT systems are only designed for use in air. Here, we report a surface-tension-driven SPT system to transport various nonpolar organic liquids using underwater extreme wettability patterns. The patterns were fabricated with a wedge-shaped superoleophilic track on a superoleophobic background by combining CuCl2 etching, stearic acid modification, and mask-based nitrogen cold plasma treatment. Three types of underwater SPT processes-horizontal transport, tilted transport, and directional transport-were studied experimentally and theoretically. For horizontal SPT and tilted SPT, the capillary force was the main driving force, which depended on the wedge angle of the superoleophilic track. The excellent transportation ability of horizontal SPT of underwater liquid droplets was obtained at a wedge angle of 3-5°. The maximum moving height of organic liquids on the tilted SPT transport was obtained at an angle of 8°. For directional SPT, organic liquids did not drop off in the moving process because of the constraint imposed by surface tension, resulting in the sustained directional transport with long distances and complex trajectories.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal cancer (EC) is the eighth most prevalent malignant tumor and the sixth leading cause of cancer mortality throughout the world. Despite the technical developments in diagnosis and treatment, the 5-year survival rate is still low. The etiology of EC remains poorly understood; multiple risk factors may be involved and account for the great variation in EC incidence in different geographic regions. SUMMARY: Infection with carcinogenetic pathogens has been proposed as a risk factor for EC. This review explores the recent studies on the association of human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Helicobacter pylori and esophageal bacterial biota with EC. KEY MESSAGE: Among the above-mentioned pathogens, HPV most likely contributes to esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in high-risk populations. New techniques are being applied to studies on the role of infection in EC, which will inevitably bring novel ideas to the field in the near future. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Multiple meta-analyses support the finding of a higher HPV detection rate in regions associated with high risk for ESCC compared to low-risk areas. A potential role of HPV in the rise of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) was proposed recently. However, further studies are required before a firm conclusion can be drawn. Less work has been done in studying the association between EBV and ESCC, and the results are quite controversial. H. pylori infection is found to be inversely related to EC, which is probably due to the reduced incidence of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Analysis of the esophageal bacterial biota revealed distinct clusters of bacteria in normal and diseased esophagi. A type II microbiome rich in Gram-negative bacteria potentially contributes to EAC by inducing chronic inflammation. Novel findings from such studies as these may benefit public health by justifying anti-infection measures to prevent EC.

Marine oil spills seriously endanger sea ecosystems and coastal environments, resulting in a loss of energy resources. Environmental and economic demands emphasize the need for new methods of effectively separating oil-water mixtures, while collecting oil content at the same time. A new surface-tension-driven, gravity-assisted, one-step, oil-water separation method is presented for sustained filtration and collection of oil from a floating spill. A benchtop prototype oil collection device uses selective-wettability (superhydrophobic and superoleophilic) stainless steel mesh that attracts the floating oil, simultaneously separating it from water and collecting it in a container, requiring no preseparation pumping or pouring. The collection efficiencies for oils with wide ranging kinematic viscosities (0.32-70.4 cSt at 40 °C) are above 94%, including motor oil and heavy mineral oil. The prototype device showed high stability and functionality over repeated use, and can be easily scaled for efficient cleanup of large oil spills on seawater. In addition, a brief consolidation of separation requirements for oil-water mixtures of various oil densities is presented to demonstrate the versatility of the material system developed herein.
