RESUMO

The Au partially embedded nanostructure (PEN) is synthesized by ion irradiation on an Au thin film deposited on a glass substrate using a 50 keV Ar ion. Scanning electron microscopy results show ion beam-induced restructuring from irregularly shaped nanostructures (NSs) to spherical Au NSs, and further ion irradiation leads to the formation of well-separated spherical nanoparticles. Higuchi's algorithm of surface analysis is utilized to find the evolution of surface morphology with ion irradiation in terms of the Hurst exponent and fractal dimension. The Au PEN is evidenced by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and optical studies. Also, the depth of the mechanism behind synthesized PEN is explained on the basis of theoretical simulations, namely, a unified thermal spike and a Monte Carlo simulation consisting of dynamic compositional changes (TRIDYN). Another set of plasmonic NSs was formed on the surface by thermal annealing of the Au film on the substrate. Glucose sensing has been studied on the two types of plasmonic layers: nanoparticles on the surface and PEN. The results reveal the sensing responses of both types of plasmonic layers. However, PEN retains its plasmonic behavior as the NSs are still present after washing with water, which demonstrates the potential for reusability. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Synthesis of PENs by ion irradiation Utilization of Higuchi's algorithm to explore the surface morphology. Unified thermal spike and TRIDYN simulations being used to explain the results. Glucose is only used as a test case for reusability of substrate.

Animals respond to changes in the environment which affect their internal state by adapting their behaviors. Social isolation is a form of passive environmental stressor that alters behaviors across animal kingdom, including humans, rodents, and fruit flies. Social isolation is known to increase violence, disrupt sleep and increase depression leading to poor mental and physical health. Recent evidences from several model organisms suggest that social isolation leads to remodeling of the transcriptional and epigenetic landscape which alters behavioral outcomes. In this review, we explore how manipulating social experience of fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster can shed light on molecular and neuronal mechanisms underlying isolation driven behaviors. We discuss the recent advances made using the powerful genetic toolkit and behavioral assays in Drosophila to uncover role of neuromodulators, sensory modalities, pheromones, neuronal circuits and molecular mechanisms in mediating social isolation. The insights gained from these studies could be crucial for developing effective therapeutic interventions in future.

Aim: This study was planned with the objective to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices of family planning methods among married women and to find out the factors associated with not using the family planning method. Materials and Methods: This community-based cross-sectional observational study was conducted in 300 married women residing in a rural area of Jaipur, Rajasthan. Written informed consent was obtained, and data were collected using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Knowledge, attitude, and practices were summarised in proportion, and their association was measured using Chi-square test. Results: The mean age of the participants was 26.7 years. Most of them (88.8% women) had knowledge of at least one contraception method. Almost two-thirds had positive attitude towards contraceptive use. The most used method was oral contraceptive pills, among 17.7% of participants. Knowledge was significantly associated with educational level and caste of the participants (P value <0.05), and practice was not significantly associated with any socio-demographic factors (P value >0.05). Conclusion: Knowledge, attitude, and practices related to modern family planning methods are still not high in rural areas. The media can play a major role in increasing awareness about family planning methods. The involvement of community and family, especially spouse, should be facilitated to maximize the understanding of family planning methods.

Introduction The under-five age group is crucial because the health profile of this age group will have a huge effect on the future development of the nation. Early infancy is marked by several distinct developmental characteristics. Progress in each domain of childhood development is used to track a child's development. Objectives The objectives of the present study were to assess and compare the growth of under-five children of employed and unemployed mothers in the Etawah District of Uttar Pradesh, India. Material and methods A community-based cross-sectional survey was carried out in Etawah district's urban and rural areas between January 2021 and June 2022. A total of 200 mothers with children under the age of five were recruited using the purposive sampling method. To gather pertinent information, a semi-structured, pre-tested, interviewer-administered questionnaire was used. Results In the present study on the comparison of the growth of children among employed and unemployed mothers, it shows that 48 children (50.5%) with a weight between 10.5 and 15 kg were of employed mothers, while 52 children weighing less than 10.5kg were of unemployed mothers (p<0.001). Forty-four children (57.1%) with a chest circumference of more than 48 cm were of employed mothers, while 26 children (78.8%) with a chest circumference of less than 45 cm were of unemployed mothers (p = 0.001). Conclusion The present study indicates that statistically significant differences were found in age-appropriate gain in weight and chest circumference, which was higher among the children of employed mothers in comparison to children of unemployed mothers. There was no statistically significant difference in age-appropriate gain in height, head circumference, or mid-upper arm circumference among the children of employed mothers and unemployed mothers.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the short-term effect of ambient air pollution on daily acute respiratory emergency room visits among adults.METHODS: A time-series study (June 2017-February 2019) was carried out among adults (≥18 years) visiting a multi-specialty hospital in Delhi. We evaluated the association between the daily levels of particulate matter (PM) <2.5 µm in diameter (PM2.5) and PM <10 µm in diameter (PM10), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and sulphur dioxide and daily count of emergency room (ER) visits for acute respiratory symptoms. Generalised additive model (GAM) was used with the Poisson link function to analyse the associations for 0-1 to 0-7 lag days.RESULTS: A total of 69,400 ER visits were recorded, of which 2,669 were by adults due to acute respiratory symptoms. At 0-7 lag days, an increment of 1 standard deviation in NO2 and PM2.5 concentration was associated with a percentage increase in acute respiratory ER visits of respectively 53.0% (95% CI 30.84-78.97) and 19.5% (95% CI 4.53-36.65). During 0-7 lag days, a positive trend was observed at higher concentrations of CO (>1.86-3.28 mg/m³), while a negative significant association was observed at low concentrations of CO (<1.171 mg/m³).CONCLUSION: Short-term exposure to ambient NO2 and PM2.5 was associated with acute respiratory emergency visits of adults at lag 0-7 days.

Structural, conformational, and spectroscopic investigations of methyl-eugenol were made theoretically at the B3LYP-6-311++G**level. Experimental IR, Raman, and UV-vis spectra were investigated and analyzed in light of the computed quantities. Conformational analysis was carried out with the help of total energy vs. dihedral angle curves for different tops, yielding 21 stable conformers, out of which only two have energies below the room temperature relative to the lowest energy conformer. The effect of the solvent on different molecular characteristics was investigated theoretically. MEP and HOMO-LUMO analysis were carried out and barrier heights and bioactivity scores were determined. The present investigation suggests that the molecule has three active sites with moderate bioactivity. The solvent-solute interaction is found to be dominant in the vicinity of the methoxy moieties.

Effect of Bis-2ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) on commercially important tropical fish pearl spot has not been demonstrated at environmental concentrations along with depuration. The species is estuarine, juvenile and difficult to maintain but widely consumed and well distributed in tropical estuaries. Antioxidant activity of SOD, CAT and GPx was enhanced on all exposure days for gill and muscle suggesting high oxidative stress, except on day 5. Detoxifying enzyme-GST behaved differentially in gill and muscle tissue after depuration, depicting inhibited activity of GST in gill leading to lipid peroxidation. However, the muscle tissue was able to recover from stress after 7 days of depuration with the help of detoxifying enzymes. Overcompensation of antioxidant activity was observed over disruption of homeostasis defining hormesis effect. Integrated biomarker (IBR) index depicted high toxicity during entire exposure time, but after depuration, gill could not mediate LPO at lowest concentration (10 µg/l) while muscle tissue recovered, suggesting persistence of stress in gill.

The Eu3+ doped and Mg2+/Ca2+ co-doped ZnGa2O4 phosphor samples were synthesized by solid-state reaction method and their structural and optical properties studied. The phase, crystallinity and particles size of the phosphor samples were studied by XRD and SEM measurements. EDS analyses were used to identify the elements present in the phosphor materials. The vibrational groups present in the phosphor samples were examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements. Pure ZnGa2O4 emits intense blue light under 260 nm excitation. However, Eu3+ doped and Mg2+/Ca2+ co-doped ZnGa2O4 phosphor samples exhibit intense red emission under 393 nm excitation. A bluish white color is observed in these samples under 290 nm excitation. The maximum PL emission intensity is found at 0.1 mol% Eu3+ doping concentration. For higher concentrations, concentration quenching was observed due to dipole-dipole interaction. The emission intensity is enhanced upto 1.20 and 2.91 times on co-doping of Mg2+ and Ca2+via induced crystal field due to charge imbalance. The emission intensity of the phosphor is found to enhance further on annealing the samples at 873 K. Under various excitation wavelengths, color tunability was seen from blue to bluish-white to red regions. The lifetime of the 5D0 level of the Eu3+ ion improves via doping of Mg2+/Ca2+ ions and it increases appreciably on annealing. The temperature dependent photoluminescence study (TDPL) reveals a thermal quenching behavior of the sample with thermal stability ∼65% and activation energy ∼0.223 eV in the Eu3+/Ca2+ co-doped ZnGa2O4 phosphor sample.

BACKGROUND: This study was to meet a practical need to design a simple tool to identify TB patients who may potentially be facing catastrophic costs while seeking TB care in the public sector. Such a tool may help prevent and address catastrophic costs among individual patients. METHODS: We used data from the national TB patient cost survey in the Philippines. We randomly allocated TB patients to either the derivation or validation sample. Using adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and ß coefficients of logistic regression, we developed four scoring systems to identify TB patients who may be facing catastrophic costs from the derivation sample. We validated each scoring system in the validation sample. RESULTS: We identified a total of 12 factors as predictive indicators associated with catastrophic costs. Using all 12 factors, the ß coefficients-based scoring system (area under the curve [AUC] 0.783, 95% CI 0.754-0.812) had a high validity. Even with seven selected factors with OR > 2.0, the validity remained in the acceptable range (ß coefficients-based: AUC 0.767, 95% CI 0.737-0.798). CONCLUSION: The ß coefficients-based scoring systems in this analysis can be used to identify those at high risk of facing catastrophic costs due to TB in the Philippines. Operational feasibility needs to be investigated further to implement this in routine TB surveillance.


CONTEXTE: Cette étude visait à répondre à un besoin pratique de concevoir un outil simple pour identifier les patients atteints de TB qui pourraient potentiellement être confrontés à des coûts catastrophiques lorsqu'ils recherchent des soins de TB dans le secteur public. Un tel outil pourrait aider à prévenir et à traiter les coûts catastrophiques chez les patients individuels. MÉTHODES: Nous avons utilisé des données de l'enquête nationale sur les coûts des patients atteints de TB aux Philippines. Nous avons réparti aléatoirement les patients atteints de TB dans l'échantillon de dérivation ou de validation. À l'aide des odds ratio (OR) ajustés et des coefficients ß de la régression logistique, nous avons développé quatre systèmes de notation pour identifier les patients atteints de TB qui pourraient être confrontés à des coûts catastrophiques à partir de l'échantillon de dérivation. Nous avons validé chaque système de notation dans l'échantillon de validation. RÉSULTATS: Nous avons identifié un total de 12 facteurs en tant qu'indicateurs prédictifs associés à des coûts catastrophiques. En utilisant les 12 facteurs, le système de notation basé sur les coefficients ß (aire sous la courbe [AUC] 0,783 ; IC 95% 0,754­0,812) avait une validité élevée. Même avec sept facteurs sélectionnés avec OR > 2,0, la validité est restée dans la plage acceptable (basée sur les coefficients ß : AUC 0,767 ; IC 95% 0,737­0,798). CONCLUSION: Les systèmes de notation basés sur les coefficients ß dans cette analyse peuvent être utilisés pour identifier les personnes à haut risque de faire face à des coûts catastrophiques liés à la TB aux Philippines. La faisabilité opérationnelle doit être étudiée plus avant pour mettre en œuvre cela dans la surveillance de routine de la TB.

The Ho3+-doped YVO4 phosphors were successfully prepared via a sol-gel process in which citric acid was used as a chelating agent. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the effective inclusion of Ho3+ ions into the host matrix with the formation of single phase YVO4. The surface morphology was observed using SEM, the results of which showed a grain growth propensity and the agglomeration of prepared phosphors. The V-O (VO4 3-) vibration mode was analyzed through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. The spectroscopic properties were reported through UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The Judd-Ofelt (J-O) intensity parameters Ω 2 = 0.03 × 10-20 cm2, Ω 4 = 0.22 × 10-20 cm2, and Ω 6 = 0.23 × 10-20 cm2 obtained for the Y0.97VO4:0.03Ho3+ phosphors were used to obtain the total transition probabilities (A T), radiative lifetimes (τ rad) and branching ratios (ß) for the certain transitions of Ho3+ ions. Under 310 nm UV excitation, the visible emission spectra were measured, and an intense emission was observed around 541 nm (green region) for all the samples. The emission cross-section σ P(λ) was 3.22 × 10-21 cm2 and the branching ratio (ß) was 0.816; these were investigated to capture the optimal concentration of the Y0.97VO4:0.03Ho3+ phosphor. The estimated color coordinates were observed in the green region of CIE diagram. Ultimately, the superior properties (σ P(λ), ß, and color purity) of Y0.97VO4:0.03Ho3+ phosphor may make it suitable for green emitting devices.

The conventional rice-wheat system in the western Indo-Gangetic plain of India is energy and water intensive with high carbon footprint. The transition towards resource-efficient eco-friendly production technologies with lower footprint is required for inclusive ecological sustenance. A five-year (2016-17 to 2020-21) field experiment was conducted in RWS with hypothesis that pressurized irrigation systems [drip (DRIP) and mini-sprinkler (MSIS)] in conservation tillage [reduced (RT)/zero (ZT)] and crop residue management [incorporation (RI)/mulch (RM)] might result in higher resource use efficiency with lesser carbon footprint compared to conventional system. Experiment consisted five treatments namely (1) puddled transplanted rice followed by conventionally tilled wheat (PTR/CTW), (2) DRIP irrigated reduced till direct seeded rice (RTDSR) followed by zero-till wheat with 100 % rice residue mulching (ZTW + RM) (DRIP-RTDSR/ZTW + RM), (3) surface irrigated RTDSR followed by ZTW + RM (SIS-RTDSR/ZTW + RM), (4) MSIS irrigated RTDSR followed by ZTW + RM (MSIS-RTDSR/ZTW + RM), and (5) MSIS irrigated RTDSR with 1/3rd wheat residue incorporation followed by ZTW + RM (MSIS-RTDSR + RI/ZTW + RM). The pressurized irrigation system in RWS established under conservational tillage and residue management (DRIP-RTDSR/ZTW + RM and MSIS-DSR + RI/ZTW + RM) produced at par system productivity compared to PTR/CTW. Substantial nitrogen (79-114 ka ha-1) and irrigation water (536-680 mm) savings under pressurized irrigation systems resulted in 41-64 % higher partial factor productivity of nitrogen with 48-61 % lower water footprint. These systems had lower energy consumption attaining 15-21 % higher net energy, 44-61 % higher energy use efficiency, and 31-38 % lower specific energy. Efficient utilization of farm inputs caused lower greenhouse gas emission (39-44 %) and enhanced carbon sequestration (35-62 %) resulting 63-76 % lower carbon footprint over PTR/CTW. The information generated here might useful in developing policies for resource and climate-smart food production system aiming livelihood security and ecological sustainability in the region. Further, trials are needed for wider adaptability under different climate, soil and agronomic practices to develop site-specific climate smart practices.

Diabetes is associated with a greater number of dental cavities. It is unclear, therefore, how potential risk factors such as salivary glucose, glycemic control and blood sugar could impact the onset of dental caries between people that have type 2 diabetes (T2D). Aim of the study - analyzing the risk factors for oral cavity disease in T2D patients. We analyzed the patient data including their dietary habits, dental hygiene practices, age and control of glycemic. The Indian dataset was used. Individual patient observations include the patient's diabetes classification as a range of medical attributes such as age, pregnancy, pedigree, glucose, body mass index, skin, blood pressure and insulin. The research discovered a significant correlation between poorly managed glycemic levels and dental caries are more prevalent in people with T2DM. High sugar consumption and poor oral hygiene habits have been identified as risk factors. These results highlight the need for integrating diabetes treatment measures with dental care to reduce dental caries in this susceptible group. Utilizing dental cavities into account improves oral health and has a positive impact on health outcomes for those with type 2 diabetes.

Stromal cells possess unique properties to regenerate themselves and cure various chronic illnesses. An easily available and ethical source for procurement of stromal cells is umbilical cord blood which is now being stored for future use. Vedic texts also describe the cord blood as a source of life. However, Indian traditions seem to preserve one more alternative for storage and procurement of stromal cells. Traditionally, in many parts of India, the umbilical cord stump is dried and stored for future use. It is used as a medicine for some illness and to treat infertility. Since Indian traditions are an excerpt of Vedic science, it points towards the possible emergence of dried stump as an easy and cost-effective means for stromal cell procurement and storage. The present review compiles the literature available on these traditional practices and stresses upon the need of rigorous experimental and theoretical research in the area.

Objective:This study aimed to investigate the incidence, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of acute kidney injury (AKI) during pregnancy in Indian population. Materials and methods:A prospective observational study was conducted in pregnant patients admitted to Pt. B.D. Sharma PGIMS, Rohtak, Haryana, India. Acute kidney injury was assessed using Risk, Injury, Failure, Loss of function, and End-stage renal disease (RIFLE) criteria. Patients were analyzed on the basis of demographic data, detailed history, clinical examination, and laboratory investigations. The primary outcome was maternal renal outcome, including return to normal renal function and progression to chronic kidney disease (CKD). The secondary outcomes included the mode of delivery, complications of pregnancy, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and maternal death. Results:A total of 51 patients with an average age of 29.5 years were included in the present study. About 49.9% of subjects had severe anemia and 41.2% were primigravida. The main cause of AKI was pre-eclampsia and postpartum hemorrhage. There was a marked improvement in renal outcome with 33 patients having complete renal recovery and six patients developed CKD was observed during three months follow-up period. The peaked median value of blood urea was 62.0 mg% in patients with normal renal function, 178.5 mg% in those with CKD and 120.0 mg% in expired patients (P=0.001). A statistically significant change in serum potassium (P=0.010) and creatinine levels (P<0.001) was observed during the follow-up period. Liver enzymes, including serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, were high in all patients at the time of admission, but decreased to normal on follow-up. Conclusion:Our study indicates that pregnancy-related AKI patients present with multiorgan complications and many of them require mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapy. Most of these patients have poor outcome. Hence, the management of pregnancy-related AKI presents a challenge that requires proper evaluation of causative factors to facilitate appropriate treatment.

India is the highest TB burden country in the world. The burden however is not uniform in different strata including tribal population - one of the key affected populations in the country. As the evidences from tribal population are hardly available, most of the policies and strategies implemented under National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) are usually based on the evidences from general populations. NTEP is continuously taking steps to strengthen TB services in tribal areas. The Social Action Plan including Tribal Action Plan is in place and the appropriate strategies are incorporated in the National Strategic Plan (NSP) to ensure universal access to quality TB services to vulnerable population groups. However, its implementation becomes challenging especially in tribal areas as different tribal groups have their own unique ways of dealing with health issues. These issues are therefore required to be addressed holistically involving all the stakeholders. In view of this a symposium was jointly organized by the Central TB Division (CTD), Govt. of India and ICMR - National Institute of Research in Tribal Health (NIRTH), Jabalpur on 17th and 18th December, 2019 at ICMR - NIRTH, Jabalpur. It provided an excellent platform for all the stakeholders from different parts of the country to share their experiences in tuberculosis particularly among marginalized populations. The recommendations emerged out of this interactive symposium highlight the sincere effort of NTEP to tackle TB situation in tribal population and show the way forward towards India's TB elimination goal by 2025 especially in hard to reach tribal areas.

Melia dubia is one of the most important industrial tree species in the South East Asia. In last few decades, the populations of M. dubia has rapidly expanded in the Indian sub-continents, leading to an increase in the genetic diversity of species. However, very less information is available on intra-specific variation in Melia under the Indian subcontinent. Therefore, a present investigation was undertaken, to assess the level of diversity in seed and saplings of the Melia populations (ecotypes) collected from three agro-ecological regions of India. Results revealed that the seed and saplings of all the ecotypes are significantly different for all the traits, except for number of branches per plant, and the maximum variability was recorded in germination percentage, seed weight, internodal length, and sapling height of the species. The high heritability for seed weight (0.99), length (0.99), and width (0.97), and germination percentage (0.99) indicated that selection and genetic gain for these traits would be effective during the commencement of improvement program. Trait association analysis explained that higher seed weight significantly reduced sapling height, collar diameter, number of leaves per plant, internodal length, petiole length, and germination percentage (r = -0.86; p  < 0.001) that ultimately reduced the seedling vigor in Melia dubia. Interestingly, the number of branches per plant were not associated with any of the morphological traits. The first principal component explained 50.09% of the entire variation and all the traits contributed greatly to the variation for this principal component, except for number of branches, leaf width and seed length. The clustering approach assorted geographic variation of M. dubia populations into three main sub-clusters i.e. South, North, and North East populations each consisting of five, seven and one populations (including cultivar), respectively. Among different ecotypes, Bahumukhi, Varsha and US Nagar seed sources outperformed all others in seedling vigour (sapling height) and rest of the growth parameters. Overall, findings explained that considerable scope exists for the development of superior planting material of M. dubia through exploration of seeds and selection at the early seedling stage.

OBJECTIVE: Although the elderly population remains at high risk for tuberculosis, studies addressing tuberculous meningitis (TBM) in this age group are scarce. The present study aimed to evaluate the spectrum and outcome of geriatric TBM and document differences between older and young patients. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted in the adult TBM patients admitted at PGIMER, Chandigarh (India). Consecutive older patients aged 60 years and above were enrolled from January 2019 to December 2020, and young adults aged 18-59 years were enrolled from July 2019 to December 2019. RESULTS: Fifty-five older patients with a mean age of 66.6 years and 73 young patients with a mean age of 35.1 years were enrolled. At admission, older patients were more likely to have altered mental status (96.4% vs. 78.1%, P = 0.003) and advanced disease with British medical research council staging 2 or 3 (98.2% vs. 89.0%, P = 0.043); however, headache (38.2% vs. 67.1%, P = 0.001), vomiting (18.2% vs. 35.6%, P = 0.030) and fever (80.0% vs. 91.8%, P = 0.052) were less common. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) abnormalities were less marked in older patients, with a significant difference in median total cells (70 vs. 110/µl, P = 0.013). Hydrocephalous and infarct were common neuroimaging abnormalities in both groups; however, tuberculomas were significantly less in the elderly (15.1% vs. 35.2%, P = 0.012). Older patients had a significantly low survival rate (56.4% vs. 76.7%, P = 0.021). CONCLUSION: Significant differences in clinical, CSF and radiological characteristics exist between elderly and young TBM patients, with survival remains dismal in the elderly.

SETTING: A tertiary care hospital in North India. OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem in developing countries. The diagnosis of tuberculosis is still challenging in primary care settings in endemic countries like India. WHO has endorsed loop mediated isothermal amplification assay (LAMP) for TB as a replacement for smear microscopy for peripheral settings, however, more data is required to establish the specificity of this modality for the diagnosis of TB. In this study we aim to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the TB-LAMP assay in pulmonary tuberculosis. DESIGN: A total of 236 patients (117 cases suspected of TB and 119 patients with non-TB pulmonary disease) were enrolled between February to July, 2018. Microbiological workups consisting of mycobacterial smear microscopy, culture, Xpert MTB/Rif and TB-LAMP were performed. RESULTS: From 236 samples, 18 (7.6%) were excluded from the study. TB-LAMP and Xpert MTB/RIF were positive in 46 (21.1%) and 49 (22.5%) of the samples, respectively. The sensitivity of Xpert MTB/RIF and TB-LAMP, when culture was taken as a reference standard, was 90% (95%CI: 78.2-96.7) and 82% (95%CI: 68.6...91.4), respectively. The specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of TB-LAMP assay were 96.8% (95%CI: 92.8...98.9), 89.1% (95%CI: 77.4...95.2), and 94.4% (95%CI: 90.4...96.5), respectively. CONCLUSION: The TB-LAMP assay showed a good specificity and sensitivity for detection ofM. tuberculosis in adults, however, for programmatic implementation, more studies are required to be conducted at peripheral level healthcare settings.

Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) presents clinically a variety of pathological and clinical organ dysfunctions, ranging in severity from asymptomatic to fatal. The care and monitoring of COVID-19 patients may benefit from the use of biochemical and hematological markers. Objective To observe the alteration of serum biochemical and hematological parameters in COVID-19 positive patients, attending a Tertiary Care Hospital. Method A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on all COVID-19 positive patients attending Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital, Biratnagar, Nepal from 15th December 2021 to 15th February 2022. The test results of different serum biochemical and hematological parameters done for these patients were recorded in clinical laboratory services and obtained retrospectively for the analysis. The data were entered in MS excel and analyzed by SPSS version 20. Result Out of 1537 COVID-11699 declared positive patients, 712 (46.32%) were male and 825 (53.68%) female. Mean age of COVID positive patients was 40.03±20.08 years. The level of serum SGOT, SGPT, ALP and GGT was significantly elevated in 39.9%, 42.8%, 32.3% and 47.2% of COVID positive patients respectively. Blood Urea, creatinine, uric acid and sugar level were significantly elevated in 63%, 56.1%, 33.1% and 47.6% patients respectively. The serum level of LDH, D-dimer, CRP and procalcitonin (PCT) were significantly increased in 52.1%, 75.9%, 71.6% and 61.2% of patients respectively. The serum value of total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL were significantly lowered in 52.2%, 43.8%, 70.1% and 60.3% of patients respectively. RBC concentration and level of hemoglobin was reduced in 56.6% and 53.6% of COVID positive patients respectively whereas total leukocyte count was elevated in 80.7% with increase in neutrophil in 87.9% and decrease in lymphocyte in 79.4%. Conclusion A portion of COVID-19 positive patients showed drastically altered test results for various serum biochemical and hematological markers, although many of them had normal findings.
