RESUMO

This study examines the perceptions and behaviours related to waste management (WM) among residents of the Kassena Nankana East Municipality in Ghana. A mixed-method approach was used to garner data from 394 household respondents, and the data was analysed using SPSS software. The findings reveal a weak correlation between educational attainment and effective waste management practices and a mildly positive correlation between waste awareness and the effectiveness of policies and legislation. Notably, a significant proportion of respondents preferred open burning (42.1 %) and dumping (18.8 %) as disposal methods, indicating critical areas for intervention. The study introduces a novel comprehensive analysis by integrating attitude formation, collective action, and institutional and rational choice theories to understand WM behaviours. This theoretical integration significantly contributes to the field, providing a heterogeneous understanding of the factors influencing WM practices. Furthermore, the research identifies key gaps in WM infrastructure and public engagement, offering innovative recommendations to address these challenges. This study's significant outputs include identifying specific community behaviours towards waste disposal and evaluating the effectiveness of existing WM policies. These findings provide actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders to develop targeted interventions that promote sustainable WM practices. The study's contributions and recommendations are crucial for advancing environmental sustainability efforts in similar contexts, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals.

A large portion of Ghana's population, particularly in rural areas, lack reliable access to safely managed water. Many of these communities rely on groundwater as their primary drinking water source. Distinguished by its thorough examination of F- occurrences in Ghana, this study complements previous studies by meticulously analyzing groundwater-soil and -plant dynamics, global implications, and region-specific insights, notably in the high-risk Bongo area. The study showed that Fluoride contamination in Ghana is evident in various regions, with primary data showcasing concentrations ranging from 0.05 mg/L-1 to 13.29 mg/L-1. The Bongo District in the north exhibits elevated fluoride levels, surpassing WHO safety limits of 1.5 mg/L-1 [62]. Additional studies in Sekyere South and Nalerigu disclose concentrations from 0.3 mg/L-1 to 4.0 mg/L-1 and 0.35 mg/L-1 to 3.95 mg/L-1, respectively. Contamination probabilities range from 50 % to 90 % in the north and northeast. While southern areas lack extensive data, the identified hotspots necessitate further investigation. Geological factors significantly influence fluoride levels, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive monitoring, mitigation, and public awareness. The identified contamination poses risks to public health, urging immediate action for sustainable solutions and ensuring safe drinking water in affected regions. The health implications of fluoride toxicity on the residents of regions prone to fluoride exposure are noteworthy. As a result, an inevitable surge in instances of dental and skeletal fluorosis can be anticipated. Notwithstanding the challenges, research indicates optimistic prospects for mitigating fluoride pollution in drinking water. Techniques like the utilization of "Bone Charcoal" and the "Contact Precipitation" approach offer promise for remediation. These methods can be implemented at a household level and some are economically viable, making them advisable for adoption in fluoride-prone areas of Ghana.

Anthropogenic factors such as leakages from fuel storage facilities contribute to the release of petroleum hydrocarbons into groundwater. Following the proliferation of fuel stations in residential areas, this research assessed physicochemical parameters, salinity, and levels of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in groundwater sources within selected residential areas. From the study, mean values of temperature (30.5 °C), pH (5.8), EC (181.5 µs/cm), TDS (90.7 mg/L), and salinity (0.1 ppm) were recorded. The highest mean concentration of TPH (9.5 mg/L) was recorded at location A, while three sampling points (J, L, and M) exhibited 0.0 mg/L. Notably, TPH concentrations exceeding permissible limits were observed at three sampling points (A, B, and R). Strong positive correlations were observed between EC and TDS (r = 0.9), as well as salinity and EC (r = 0.9) and TDS (r = 0.9). Matrix plots demonstrated non-linear relationships, except for TDS and EC, although TPH and temperature exhibited a slightly linear pattern. The distance from USTs to the groundwater sources varied in the area. At location H, this distance (25 m) was measured as the shortest, where the mean TPH concentration was 3.71 mg/L. However, site Q exhibited the longest distance of 535 m, accompanied by a mean TPH concentration of 1.1 mg/L. Though the proximity of USTs to groundwater sources exerted some level of influence on the groundwater system, multiple linear regression, ANOVA, and cluster analysis showed that this did not pose direct and major impacts on the concentrations of TPH. However, approaches are needed to remediate the affected groundwater sources.
