Niacin is a cofactor in many biological reactions related to energy metabolism, redox reactions, DNA repair and longevity. Although it has been considered that increasing energy expenditure increases NAD consumption, little study has directly demonstrated the effect of exercise on niacin nutritional status. We have recently established the niacin insufficient model mice using kynurenine 3-monooxygenase knock out (KMO-/-) mice with niacin-limited diet, which lack the de novo NAD synthesis pathway from tryptophan. To evaluate the effects of chronic endurance exercise on niacin nutritional status, 4 wk old KMO-/- mice were fed 4 or 30 mg/kg nicotinic acid containing diets, and forced to swim in a running water pool every other day for 35 d. The swim-exercised mice fed 4 mg/kg nicotinic acid diet showed lower body weight gain and niacin nutritional markers such as liver and blood NAD, and urine nicotinamide metabolites than the sedentary mice. These animals did not show any difference in the NAD synthesis, NAD salvage and nicotinamide catabolic pathways. Chronic endurance exercise failed to affect any indices in the mice fed the 30 mg/kg nicotinic acid diet. When the diet was exchanged the 4 mg/kg for 30 mg/kg nicotinic acid diet to the mice showed chronic endurance exercise-induced growth retardation, their body weight rapidly increased. These results show that chronic endurance exercise impairs niacin nutritional status in the niacin insufficient mice, and enough niacin intake can prevent this impairment. Our findings also suggest that chronic endurance exercise increases niacin requirement by increase of NAD consumption.

Demyelinating diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS) are chronic inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system. Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 2 (Ido2) is a recently identified as catalytic enzyme involved in the rate-limiting step of the tryptophan-kynurenine pathway that influences susceptibility to inflammatory diseases. However, the pathological role of Ido2 in demyelination remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether Ido2 deficiency influences the pathogenesis of proteolipid protein transgenic (Plp tg) mice, an animal model of chronic demyelination. Ido2 deficiency exacerbates impairments of motor function in the locomotor activity test, wire hanging test, and rotarod test. Ido2 deficiency caused severe demyelination associated with CD68-positive microglial activation in Plp tg mice. In the cerebellum of Plp tg mice, Ido2 deficiency significantly increased the expression of Tnfα. Ido2 deficiency reduced tryptophan metabolite kynurenine (KYN) levels and subsequent aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activity, which play an important role in anti-inflammatory response. These results suggest that Ido2 has an important role in preventing demyelination through AhR. Taken together, Ido2 could be a potential therapeutic target for demyelinating diseases.

Since niacin deficiency has been reported in alcoholic patients, and niacin coenzyme NAD is used as substrate to dehydrogenate ethanol in the liver, ethanol consumption can be a factor to impair niacin nutritional status. We have recently established the niacin insufficient model mice using kynurenine 3-monooxygenase knock out (KMO-/-) mice with niacin-limited diet, which lack the de novo NAD synthesis pathway from tryptophan. To evaluate the effects of chronic ethanol intake on niacin nutritional status, 4 wk old KMO-/- mice were fed 4 or 30 mg/kg nicotinic acid containing diets with or without 15% ethanol for 35 d. The mice fed 4 mg/kg nicotinic acid diet with ethanol showed lower body weight gain and niacin nutritional markers such as liver and blood NAD, and urine nicotinamide metabolites than the mice without ethanol. These animals did not show any difference in the NAD synthesis, NAD salvage and nicotinamide catabolic pathways. Chronic ethanol intake failed to affect any indices in the mice fed the 30 mg/kg nicotinic acid diet. When the diet was exchanged the 4 mg/kg for 30 mg/kg nicotinic acid diet to the mice showed chronic ethanol-induced growth retardation, their body weight rapidly increased. PURPOSE: The increased global burden of non-communicable diseases and mental disorders is an urgent health challenge for countries around the entire world, especially those experiencing super-ageing societies, where over 21% of the population is age 65 years or older. Japan is the world's most rapidly ageing society, and as a result, medical costs are also rising dramatically. With the aims of establishing a foundational framework for future research efforts, primarily focusing on the development of a personal health record (PHR) system, and creating a long-term repository for bioresources integrated with PHRs, this study investigated potential health risks and future healthcare burdens based on a longitudinal analysis of health records. PARTICIPANTS: The Resource Center for Health Science (RECHS) project is a long-term, prospective biobank project, population and health check-up-based cohort that primarily investigates the associations between lifestyle and environmental factors and some surrogate markers of non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Starting in 2010, we initiated an annual cohort study among voluntary participants recruited from health check-up programmes and collected data from the following sources: a self-administered baseline questionnaire that included items on dietary habits and stress, a Brief Self-Administered Diet History Questionnaire, the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and the General Health Questionnaire-28. FINDINGS TO DATE: For this prospective cohort study, we planned to enrol approximately 10 000 participants. We collected and stored serum samples from all participants for future analyses. The study participants who still were able to participate in these health check-ups and their outcomes were then obtained from the measurements and questionnaire responses. FUTURE PLANS: Insights emerging from the RECHS study can provide researchers and public health policy administrators with evidence to aid in the prevention of non-communicable diseases and clarify the most malleable status to implement preventive measures.

Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 2 (IDO2) is an enzyme of the tryptophan-kynurenine pathway that is constitutively expressed in the brain. To provide insight into the physiological role of IDO2 in the brain, behavioral and neurochemical analyses in IDO2 knockout (KO) mice were performed. IDO2 KO mice showed stereotyped behavior, restricted interest and social deficits, traits that are associated with behavioral endophenotypes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). IDO2 was colocalized immunohistochemically with tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive cells in dopaminergic neurons. In the striatum and amygdala of IDO2 KO mice, decreased dopamine turnover was associated with increased α-synuclein level. Correspondingly, levels of downstream dopamine D1 receptor signaling molecules such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor and c-Fos positive proteins were decreased. Furthermore, decreased abundance of ramified-type microglia resulted in increased dendritic spine density in the striatum of IDO2 KO mice. Both chemogenetic activation of dopaminergic neurons and treatment with methylphenidate, a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, ameliorated the ASD-like behavior of IDO2 KO mice. Sequencing analysis of exon regions in IDO2 from 309 ASD samples identified a rare canonical splice site variant in one ASD case. These results suggest that the IDO2 gene is, at least in part, a factor closely related to the development of psychiatric disorders.

Niacin is involved in many biological reactions relating energy metabolism, redox reactions, DNA repair and longevity, and low NAD levels with aging and feeding high fat diets develop and progress age-related diseases. Although recent findings suggest the requirement of niacin insufficient animal model to further study, appropriate animal models have not been established yet because niacin is biosynthesized from tryptophan via tryptophan-nicotinamide pathway. To establish model mice to evaluate niacin nutritional status, we used kynurenine 3-monooxygenase knock out (KMO-/-) mice which lack NAD biosynthesis pathway from tryptophan. To determine the niacin requirement and assess niacin nutritional markers, 4 wk old KMO-/- mice were fed 2-30 mg/kg nicotinic acid containing diets for 28 d. More than 4 mg/kg but not less than 3 mg/kg nicotinic acid containing diets induced maximum growth, and niacin nutritional markers in the blood, liver and urine increased with increase of dietary nicotinic acid. These results showed that several niacin nutritional markers reflect niacin nutritional status, niacin nutritional status can be controlled by dietary nicotinic acid, and niacin requirement for maximum growth is 4 mg/kg nicotinic acid diets in the KMO-/- mice. This animal model useful to investigate pathophysiology and mechanism of niacin deficiency, clarify the relationships between niacin nutritional status and age-related and lifestyle diseases, and evaluate factors affecting niacin nutritional status.

Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic agent used to treat many types of malignant tumors. However, irrespective of its potent anticancer properties and efficacy, nephrotoxicity is the dose-limiting factor of cisplatin treatment. Cisplatin infiltrates renal tubular cells in the kidneys and is metabolized by cysteine conjugate-beta lyase 1 (CCBL1) to form highly reactive thiol-cisplatin; this may mediate cisplatin's nephrotoxicity. Therefore, CCBL1 inhibition may prevent cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Using a high-throughput screening assay, we identified 2',4',6'-trihydroxyacetophenone (THA) as an inhibitor of CCBL1. THA inhibited human CCBL1 ß-elimination activity in a concentration-dependent manner. We further investigated the preventive effect of THA on cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. THA attenuated the effect of cisplatin on the viability of confluent renal tubular cells (LLC-PK1 cells) but had no effect on cisplatin-induced reduction of proliferation in the tumor cell lines (LLC and MDA-MB-231). THA pretreatment significantly attenuated cisplatin-induced increases in blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, cell damage score, and apoptosis of renal tubular cells in mice in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, THA pretreatment attenuated cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity without compromising its antitumor activities in mice bearing subcutaneous syngeneic LLC tumors. THA could help prevent cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity and may provide a new strategy for cisplatin-inclusive cancer treatments.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the applicability of a machine learning-based low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) estimation method and the influence of the characteristics of the training datasets. METHODS: Three training datasets were chosen from training datasets: health check-up participants at the Resource Center for Health Science (N = 2664), clinical patients at Gifu University Hospital (N = 7409), and clinical patients at Fujita Health University Hospital (N = 14,842). Nine different machine learning models were constructed through hyperparameter tuning and 10-fold cross-validation. Another test dataset of another 3711 clinical patients at Fujita Health University Hospital was selected as the test set used for comparing and validating the model against the Friedewald formula and the Martin method. RESULTS: The coefficients of determination of the models trained on the health check-up dataset produced coefficients of determination that were equal to or inferior to those of the Martin method. In contrast, the coefficients of determination of several models trained on clinical patients exceeded those of the Martin method. The means of the differences and the convergences to the direct method were higher for the models trained on the clinical patients' dataset than for those trained on the health check-up participants' dataset. The models trained on the latter dataset tended to overestimate the 2019 ESC/EAS Guideline for LDL-cholesterol classification. CONCLUSION: Although machine learning models provide valuable method for LDL-C estimates, they should be trained on datasets with matched characteristics. The versatility of machine learning methods is another important consideration.

The partial loss of liver due to liver transplantation or acute liver failure induces rapid liver regeneration. Recently, we reported that the selective inhibition of indoleamine 2,3­dioxygenase (Ido) 1 promotes early liver regeneration. However, the role of Ido2 in liver regeneration remains unclear. Wild­type (WT) and Ido2­deficient (Ido2­KO) mice were subjected to 70% partial hepatectomy (PHx). Hepatocyte growth was measured using immunostaining. The mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines and production of kynurenine in intrahepatic mononuclear cells (MNCs) were analyzed using reverse transcription­quantitative PCR and high­performance liquid chromatography. The activation of NF­κB was determined by both immunocytochemistry and western blotting analysis. The ratio of liver to body weight and the frequency of proliferation cells after PHx were significantly higher in Ido2­KO mice compared with in WT mice. The expression of IL­6 and TNF­α in MNCs were transiently increased in Ido2­KO mice. The nuclear transport of NF­κB was significantly higher in peritoneal macrophages of Ido2­KO mice compared with WT mice. These results suggested that Ido2 deficiency resulted in transiently increased production of inflammatory cytokines through the activation of NF­kB, thereby promoting liver regeneration. Therefore, the regulation of Ido2 expression in MNCs may play a therapeutic role in liver regeneration under injury and disease conditions.

Patients found to have presumed germline pathogenic variants (PGPVs) during comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) require genetic counseling (GC) referrals. We retrospectively investigated the outcomes of patients with PGPVs. Among 159 patients who underwent CGP, we recommended GC for the 16 patients with PGPVs (3 with [FG group] and 13 without [G Group] a family/personal history of hereditary cancer) as well as for the 8 patients with no PGPVs, but a history (F group); 2 (67%), 5 (38%), and 3 (38%) patients received GC in the FG, G, and F groups, respectively. Germline testing results were positive in 1 and 2 patients of the FG and G groups, respectively. Among the patients recommended for GC, 58% did not receive GC due to lack of interest, poor performance status, or death. CGP contributes to the identification of germline variants in patients without a history of hereditary cancer. However, the proportion of patients who undergo GC should be improved.

The COVID-19 vaccine will be safe and effective in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTs). However, the blunted antibody responses were also of concern. Few studies have reported prolonged serologic follow-up after 2 doses of BNT162b2 vaccine in SOTs. We performed a single-center, prospective observational study of 78 SOTs who received 2 doses of BNT162b2 vaccine. We identified the trajectory of antibody titers after vaccination among SOTs with or without mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) or withdrawn from MMF. We found low seroconversion rates (29/42: 69%) and low antibody titers in SOTs treated with MMF. An inverse linear relationship between neutralizing antibody titers and MMF concentration was confirmed in restricted cubic spline plots (P for effect < .01, P for nonlinearity = .08). For the trajectory of antibody responses, seroconversion and improved antibody titers were observed after withdrawal from MMF in SOTs who showed seronegative or low antibody titers at the first visit after 2 doses of vaccine (P for effect < .01, P for nonlinearity < .05, and P for interaction < .01). We identified increased B-cell counts after withdrawal from MMF (P < .01). The recovery of antibody responses was seen in SOTs withdrawn from MMF. The trajectories of antibody responses were modified by MMF administration.

Phencyclidine (PCP) causes mental symptoms that closely resemble schizophrenia through the inhibition of the glutamatergic system. The kynurenine (KYN) pathway (KP) generates metabolites that modulate glutamatergic systems such as kynurenic acid (KA), quinolinic acid (QA), and xanthurenic acid (XA). Kynurenine 3-monooxygenase (KMO) metabolizes KYN to 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HK), an upstream metabolite of QA and XA. Clinical studies have reported lower KMO mRNA and higher KA levels in the postmortem brains of patients with schizophrenia and exacerbation of symptoms in schizophrenia by PCP. However, the association between KMO deficiency and PCP remains elusive. Here, we demonstrated that a non-effective dose of PCP induced impairment of prepulse inhibition (PPI) in KMO KO mice. KA levels were increased in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HIP) of KMO KO mice, but 3-HK levels were decreased. In wild-type C57BL/6 N mice, the PPI impairment induced by PCP is exacerbated by KA, while attenuated by 3-HK, QA and XA. Taken together, KMO KO mice were vulnerable to the PPI impairment induced by PCP through an increase in KA and a decrease in 3-HK, suggesting that an increase in the ratio of KA to 3-HK (QA and XA) may play an important role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES: High concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We validated the efficacy of the Martin method is useful in the estimation of LDL-C concentrations was validated in Japanese populations and derived a modified Martin method for easy laboratory information system applications. METHODS: We created 3 subject groups, including 2664 health check-up participants registered with the Resource Center for Health Science, 29,806 clinical patients (A) in the Gifu University Hospital, and 113,716 clinical patients (B) in the Fujita Health University Hospital. Each method to estimate serum LDL-C concentrations (Friedewald formula, Martin method and modified Martin method) was validated by correlation analysis with serum LDL-C concentrations measured using a direct method. RESULTS: The correlation coefficients with the direct method in terms of the Friedewald formula, Martin method, and modified Martin method were 0.963, 0.972 and 0.970 in the health check-up participants; 0.946, 0.962 and 0.961 in clinical patients A; and 0.961, 0.979 and 0.978 in clinical patients B, respectively. Concordance ratios with using the direct method in the Friedewald formula, Martin method and modified Martin method were 82.8%, 85.5% and 85.3% in the health check-up participants; 76.4%, 80.5% and 80.2% in clinical patients A; and 76.1%, 82.6% and 82.6% in clinical patients B, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our results show that the Martin and modified Martin methods display good performance in terms of the estimation of LDL-C concentrations among triglyceride concentrations of a wide range, and they may thus be useful for estimating LDL-C concentrations.

To fight severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), mass vaccination has begun in many countries. To investigate the usefulness of a serological assay to predict vaccine efficacy, we analyzed the levels of IgG, IgM, and IgA against the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2 in the sera from BNT162b2 vaccinated individuals in Japan. This study included 219 individuals who received two doses of BNT162b2. The levels of IgG, IgM, and IgA against RBD were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay before and after the first and second vaccination, respectively. The relationship between antibody levels and several factors, including age, gender, and hypertension were analyzed. Virus-neutralizing activity in sera was measured to determine the correlation with the levels of antibodies. A chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA) method to measure IgG against RBD was developed and validated for the clinical setting. The levels of all antibody isotypes were increased after vaccination. Among them, RBD-IgG was dramatically increased after the second vaccination. The IgG levels in females were significantly higher than in males. There was a negative correlation between age and IgG levels in males. The IgG levels significantly correlated with the neutralizing activity. The CLEIA assay measuring IgG against RBD showed a reliable performance and a high correlation with neutralizing activity. Monitoring of IgG against RBD is a powerful tool to predict the efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and provides useful information in considering a personalized vaccination strategy for COVID-19. IMPORTANCE Mass vaccination campaigns using mRNA vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 have begun in many countries. Serological assays to detect antibody production may be a useful tool to monitor the efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in individuals. Here, we reported the induction of antibody isotype responses after the first and second dose of the BNT162b2 vaccine in a well-defined cohort of employees in Japan. We also reported that age, gender, and hypertension are associated with differences in antibody response after vaccination. This study not only provides valuable information with respect to antibody responses after BNT162b2 vaccination in the Japanese population but also the usefulness of serological assays for monitoring vaccine efficacy in clinical laboratories to determine a personalized vaccination strategy for COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is known to cause not only respiratory but also neuropsychiatric symptoms, which are assumed to be derived from a cytokine storm and its effects on the central nervous systems. Patients with COVID-19 who develop severe respiratory symptoms are known to show severe neuropsychiatric symptoms such as cerebrovascular disease and encephalopathy. However, the detailed clinical courses of patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms caused by mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 remain poorly understood. Here, we present a case of COVID-19 who presented with severe and prolonged neuropsychiatric symptoms subsequent to mild respiratory symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old female with COVID-19 accompanied by mild respiratory symptoms showed delusion, psychomotor excitement, and poor communication ability during quarantine outside the hospital. Considering her diminished respiratory symptoms, her neuropsychiatric symptoms were initially regarded as psychogenic reactions. However, as she showed progressive disturbance of consciousness accompanied by an abnormal electroencephalogram, she was diagnosed with post-COVID-19 encephalopathy. Although her impaired consciousness and elevated cytokine level improved after steroid pulse therapy, several neuropsychiatric symptoms, including a loss of concentration, unsteadiness while walking, and fatigue, remained. CONCLUSIONS: This case suggests the importance of both recognizing that even apparently mild COVID-19-related respiratory symptoms can lead to severe and persistent neuropsychiatric symptoms, and elucidating the mechanisms, treatment, and long-term course of COVID-19-related neuropsychiatric symptoms in the future.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome is a susceptibility syndrome for cancers, such as breast and ovarian cancer, and BRCA1/2 are its causative genes. Annual breast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is recommended for BRCA1/2 mutation carriers aged over 25 years as a secondary prevention of breast cancer. However, breast MRI surveillance is rarely performed in Japan, and only four cases of breast cancer diagnosis triggered by MRI surveillance have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: At our hospital, MRI triggered the diagnosis of breast cancer in four cancer-free BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. In one of our four cases, although MRI showed only a 3-mm focus, we could diagnose breast cancer by shortening the surveillance interval considering the patient's high-risk for developing breast cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Image-guided biopsy, including MRI-guided biopsy, depending on the size of the lesion, and shorter surveillance intervals are useful when there are potentially malignant findings on breast MRI surveillance for cancer-free patients with HBOC.

BACKGROUND: Progranulin (GP88) is an 88-kDa glycoprotein growth factor with important biological effects in tumorigenesis and tumour survival. We investigated the usefulness of measuring serum GP88 concentrations as a predictive biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with viral hepatitis C after treatment with direct-acting antiviral agents. METHODS: We measured the serum GP88 concentrations by using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunoassay from 67 healthy control subjects and 29 patients (20 patients who did not develop hepatocellular carcinoma and 9 patients who developed hepatocellular carcinoma after treatment) with viral hepatitis C after treatment with asunaprevir and daclatasvir. RESULTS: The serum GP88 concentrations of patients with chronic hepatitis C prior to antiviral treatment were significantly higher than those of healthy control subjects. After antiviral treatment, the serum GP88 concentrations of patients who eventually developed hepatocellular carcinoma were significantly higher than those who did not develop hepatocellular carcinoma. The changes in the serum GP88 concentrations before and after treatment in patients who developed hepatocellular carcinoma were significantly lower than those in patients who did not develop hepatocellular carcinoma. The cumulative incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma was significantly higher in either patients with high serum GP88 concentrations after treatment or those with small changes of serum GP88 concentrations pre- and post-treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Sustained high concentrations of serum GP88 in patients treated with direct-acting antiviral agents are correlated with the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma.

Despite advances in our understanding of endotoxic shock, novel therapeutic interventions that can reduce the burden of sepsis remain elusive. Current treatment options are limited, and it is only through refinements in the ways that we deliver supportive care that mortality has fallen over the years. In this study, the role of kynurenine 3-monooxygenase (KMO) in immune regulation was examined in LPS-induced endotoxemia using KMO-/- and KMO+/+ mice treated with the KMO inhibitor Ro61-8048. We showed that LPS-induced or cecal ligation and puncture-induced mortality and hepatic IL-6 production increased in the absence of KMO, possibly involving increased activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) signaling in hepatic macrophages. Moreover, treatment of septic mice with 3-hydroxykynurenine reduced mortality rates and inflammatory responses regardless of the presence or absence of KMO. According to our results, the administration of 3-hydroxykynurenine as part of the treatment approach for sepsis or as an adjuvant therapy might reduce the overproduction of IL-6, which is responsible for severe endotoxemia, and ultimately improve the survival rates of patients with sepsis.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common and serious psychiatric disease that involves brain inflammation. Bifidobacterium breve is commonly used as a probiotic and was shown to improve colitis and allergic diseases by suppressing the inflammatory response. Heat-sterilized B. breve has beneficial effects on inflammation. We hypothesize, therefore, that this probiotic might reduce depression symptoms. We tested this is a mouse model of social defeat stress. C57BL/6J mice exposed to chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) for five consecutive days developed a mild depression-like behavior characterized by a social interaction impairment. CSDS also altered the gut microbiota composition, such as increased abundance of Bacilli, Bacteroidia, Mollicutes, and Verrucomicrobiae classes and decreased Erysipelotrichi class. The prophylactic effect of heat-sterilized B. breve as a functional food ingredient was evaluated on the depression-like behavior in mice. The supplementation started two weeks before and lasted two weeks after the last exposure to CSDS. Two weeks after CSDS, the mice showed deficits in social interaction and increased levels of inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HIP). Heat-sterilized B. breve supplementation significantly prevented social interaction impairment, suppressed IL-1ß increase in the PFC and HIP, and modulated the alteration of the gut microbiota composition induced by CSDS. These findings suggest that heat-sterilized B. breve prevents depression-like behavior and IL-1ß expression induced by CSDS through modulation of the gut microbiota composition in mice. Therefore, heat-sterilized B. breve used as an ingredient of functional food might prevent MDD.
