RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the endemic situation of schistosomiasis in a national surveillance site of Yangzhong City, so as to provide the scientific evidence for adjusting the local schistosomiasis control strategy and consolidating the control achievements. METHODS: According to the National Schistosomiasis Surveillance Scheme (2014 version), the snail status, Schistosoma japonicum infections in humans and livestock and wild feces contamination were monitored in Zhinan Village, a national schistosomiasis surveillance site in Yangzhong City from 2015 to 2018. RESULTS: Theareasofsnailhabitatsreducedfrom 8.10 hm2 in 2015 to 2.72 hm2 in 2018, and the mean density of living snails decreased from 0.27 snails/0.1 m2 in 2015 to 0.07 snails/0.1 m2 in 2018 in Zhinan Village; however, no S. japonicum infections were identified in snails during the period from 2015 to 2018. Serological testing for S. japonicum infections was performed in 2 034 local populations and 858 mobile populations from 2015 to 2018, and the sero-prevalence of S. japonicum human infections was 0.59% to 1.98%, with no egg-positives detected. A total of 79 goats were detected for S. japonicum infections from 2015 to 2018, and no egg-positives were found. In addition, no other livestock was found in Zhinan Village from 2015 to 2018, and no wild feces were found in snail habitats. CONCLUSIONS: A great success has been achieved in schistosomiasis control in Yangzhong City; however, there are still snails breeding in the city. Monitoring of the risk factors pertaining to schistosomiasis transmission should be further intensified to consolidate the control achievements.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression and clinical significance of miRNA-99a and miRNA-224 in the serum of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: 83 patients with NSCLC, who were diagnosed and treated in our hospital from January 2014 to September 2017, were included in the experiment group. 79 patients, who made health check up, were included in the control group. The quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) technique was used to test the expressions of miRNA-99a and miRNA-224 in the serum of the patients in the two groups, and the relationship between the expression levels of miRNA-99a and miRNA-224 and the clinicopathological features of the patients with NSCLC was analyzed; the correlation between the expression of miRNA-99a and the expression of miRNA-224 in NSCLC was also analyzed. RESULTS: The expression level of miRNA-99a in the patients with NSCLC was significantly lower than that in the patients in the normal control group; the differences were statistically significant (p<0.001). The expression level of miRNA-224 in the patients with NSCLC was markedly higher than that in the patients in the normal control group; the differences were statistically significant (p<0.001). The expression level of miRNA-99a in the patients with NSCLC was remarkably correlated with pathological stage, the presence or absence of lymph node metastasis and tissue differentiation (p<0.001). The expression level of miRNA-224 in the patients with NSCLC was significantly correlated with pathological stage, the presence or absence of lymph node metastasis and pathological grade (p<0.001). The results of partial correlation analysis showed that the expression levels of miRNA-99a and miRNA-224 were negatively correlated with each other in NSCLC (r=-0.985, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: MiRNA-99a and miRNA-224 may be involved in the development and progression of NSCLC. MiRNA-99a is associated with NSCLC pathological stage, lymph node metastasis and tissue differentiation, while miRNA-224 is associated with NSCLC pathological stage, lymph node metastasis and pathological grade. MiRNA-99a and miRNA-224 can be used as clinical monitoring indicators for NSCLC.

RESUMO

Isolated syphilitic cervical lymphadenopathy (SCL) is a rare presentation of syphilis. Two patients with isolated SCL are presented here with a review of the literature. The first patient was a 72-year-old man with a mass (diameter 5 cm) in the right neck region for 26 days. Serological tests, imaging studies and pathological examination of the mass after surgical excision confirmed the diagnosis of isolated SCL. The second patient was a 48-year-old man with a mass (diameter 4 cm) in the right neck region for 1 month. The diagnosis of isolated SCL was made on the basis of serological tests, cervical ultrasound and pathological examination of the mass after surgical excision. Complete excision resulted in a satisfactory outcome in both patients. Isolated neck masses without associated clinical manifestations or adverse personal history are a diagnostic challenge, and SCL is easily overlooked in the differential diagnosis. Unusual masses should always remind clinicians of this infectious disease and a comprehensive diagnostic strategy is recommended. Nonroutine syphilitic serological tests should be performed in patients suspected of having SCL, and the histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics may help to confirm the diagnosis.

RESUMO

Alpinia mosaic virus (AlpMV), once assigned to the genus Potyvirus, infects primarily plants of the ginger family. To seek molecular evidence for correct classification of this virus, a cDNA clone corresponding to the 3' portion of the AlpMV genome was obtained by reverse transcriptase-PCR and TA cloning. The authenticity of the cDNA clone was confirmed by expression of the coat protein (CP) in E. coli followed by immunoblot analysis. Sequence analysis indicated that, in contrast to its low identity with all the other genera of the family Potyviridae, the deduced amino acid sequence of AlpMV CP was 42.9 - 61.9% identical to members of the genus Macluravirus. Phylogenetic analysis also demonstrated that the AlpMV CP clustered with those of Cardamom mosaic virus and Chinese yam necrotic mosaic virus. These results indicate that AlpMV should be classified as a tentative species within the genus Macluravirus rather than Potyvirus as proposed previously.

RESUMO

An investigation on drinking water quality in rural areas of 180 counties in 26 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions of China was carried out. The population surveyed was 89.39 million. 69.6% of which was supplied with ground water. Central water supply systems served 47.1% of population. Quality of drinking water was graded according to the "Guidelines for Implementation of the 'Sanitary Standard for Drinking Water' in Rural Areas". The rate of population supplied with unqualified drinking water was 42.7%. The bacteriological indices of drinking water exceeded the standard seriously. Organic pollution occurred extensively. Some regions supplied with water of high concentration of fluoride.

RESUMO

We analyzed the radiological and pathological characteristics of 30 peripheral lung masses 1.5-3 cm in diameter. We describe the vacuole and the nodule sign. Retrospective examination of 100 conventional tomograms of peripheral pulmonary masses and comparison with the histological diagnoses allowed us to determine the usefulness of these two signs in differentiating small peripheral bronchogenic carcinomas from tuberculomas.

RESUMO

Chest radiological plane films and traditional tomographic and CT scans of the mediastinum were correlated with pathological findings of the thymus following thymectomy in 61 cases with myasthenia gravis. The authors suggest that since it is difficult to differentiate the normal thymus or thymic hyperplasia from thymoma, thymoma can be more easily diagnosed in older than in younger patients.
